Ciao Adam e benvenuto su SpazioRock.it! Ascoltando il vostro nuovo album "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" ho riscontrato un uso piuttosto vintage dell'elettronica. Mi riferisco in particolare al brano "We Are Thin Air". Cosa ammiri e cosa odi di più della musica anni '80?

Ciao e grazie, sono davvero felice di fare questa intervista. C'è qualcosa negli anni '80 di davvero molto eccitante quando si tratta di elettronica e di musica in generale. È come se i musicisti di quel tempo volessero provare ad immaginare come sarebbe stato il futuro, il che ha portato a molti elementi sperimentali ed a nuove idee. Ammiro molto l'atteggiamento curioso e il desiderio di esplorare cose nuove nella musica. Non direi che non mi piace nulla della musica degli anni '80, però se ripenso a quei tagli di capelli...

Possiamo considerare "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" un mix di successo che abbraccia i Pink Floyd, i Porcupine Tree e gli Editors senza trascurare i Beatles ed un tocco di psichedelia. Quali sono le tre canzoni che preferisci di questi artisti? Come ti hanno influenzato?

Ultimamente ho ascoltato principalmente i Porcupine Tree, ma è una band che apprezzo già da molto tempo. "Bonnie The Cat", "The Blind House" e "The Incident" sono le loro canzoni che preferisco. Oltre a immergermi nell'atmosfera di quelle canzoni, lo stile preciso ed espressivo di Gavin Harrison ha davvero influenzato il mio modo di suonare la batteria.

Perché questa folla del titolo è così lontana? È qualcosa legato ad una vostra esperienza sul palco?

Il titolo "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" non è correlato alle nostre esperienze sul palco. Parla di questa esigenza che tutti abbiamo di ottenere approvazione sui social media e di come questo abbia modellato le nostre relazioni. Cerchiamo comtinuamente lodi attraverso la tecnologia, mentre molte di queste interazioni potrebbero non trasformarsi mai in relazioni fruttuose. Invece riceviamo lodi e applausi costanti da parte di una "folla lontana" (e apparentemente digitale).

Tornando al vostro ultimo album, l'influenza dei Meshuggah e del djent appare meno evidente rispetto al passato. È un processo naturale dovuto ad un'evoluzione spontanea verso altri territori musicali? Cosa ha scatenato questo cambiamento?

Sembra essere una progressione naturale dal nostro precedente album "Inmazes". Quel disco era molto "controllato" in un certo senso, mentre il nuovo album poteva essere un po' più volutamente imperfetto. Una delle ragioni di questo cambiamento è che non volevamo creare un secondo "Inmazes", ma qualcosa di differente. Direi che la ragione principale è semplicemente perché amiamo la musica in cui la batteria è più sporca, dove le chitarre sono più aperte e dove abbiamo spazio per sperimentare molte idee diverse. Anche se amiamo la musica dei Meshuggah e simili, ascoltiamo anche molto altro. Vogliamo essere in grado di esplorare tante strade diverse che ci interessano, senza limitazioni.

A volte, come in "Ruby Pool", l'atmosfera diventa sognante. Cosa è stato finora, musicalmente parlando, il vostro miglior momento ad occhi aperti?

Non riesco a dirti un momento specifico, ma sicuramente mi diverto semplicemente ad ammirare uno splendido scenario e ad ascoltare della buona musica mentre sogno ad occhi aperti. Sono un grande fan delle buone colonne sonore che catturano momenti e stati d'animo specifici. Può essere una musica perfetta per farlo.

In "Alien Shivers" la compressione del suono della chitarra crea un'esplosione emotiva. Questa canzone sarà inclusa nella scaletta dei vostri prossimi show italiani?

Non vogliamo ancora svelare la scaletta, quindi dovresti venire agli spettacoli per scoprirlo. Ma è sicuramente una delle canzoni che ci piace di più suonare.

A questo riguardo... Vi esibirete nel nostro Paese dal 12 al 14 ottobre. Cosa vorresti anticipare al pubblico italiano?

Non vediamo l'ora di suonare in Italia, è un paese incredibilmente bello con legami con tante epoche e culture diverse, è così intrigante... Speriamo di vedere molti volti felici tra la folla, faremo del nostro meglio per rendere gli show qualcosa di speciale.

Come forse già saprai, il vostro nome significa "vola" in italiano. Dove vorresti volare se potessi vincere un biglietto last minute? Perché?

Mi piacerebbe viaggiare di nuovo a Roma! Ci sono andato più di un anno fa e ho visitato molti posti diversi. I Musei Vaticani e Villa Borghese mi sono rimasti impressi. Quando dico che l'Italia è bella lo penso davvero. Sarà molto emozionante vivere questa esperienza a Vicenza, Milano e Firenze!

Hello guys and welcome to SpazioRock! As I was listening to your album I found a vintage use of electronics. I refer to the of the song "We Are Thin Air" especially. What do you admire and what do you hate the most about the music from the 80's?

Hello and thank you, I'm really happy to be doing this interview. There's something about the 80's that is very exciting when it comes to electronics in music, and just music in general. It's as if musicians at that time wanted to try and explore what the future might sound like, which resulted in a lot of experimental elements and new ideas. I really admire that curious attitude and the drive to explore new things in music.
I wouldn't say that I dislike anything about the music from the 80's, but something was going on with those haircuts though.

We can consider "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" a successful mix that looks at Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Editors without neglecting The Beatles and a touch of psychedelia. What are the best three songs you have been listening to by these artist? How have they affected you?

I have only listened mostly to Porcupine Tree lately, but it's a band that I've listened to for a long time. "Bonnie The Cat", "The Blind House" and "The Incident" are my favorite songs by them. Besides just soaking in the atmosphere of those songs, the precise and expressive playstyle of Gavin Harrison has really impacted my drumming. 

Why is this crowd so distant? Is this something related to your experience on stage?

The title "Applause Of A Distant Crowd" isn't related to our experiences on stage. It speaks to this need that we all have to get validation on social media and how it has shaped our relationships.  We're looking for praise through technology while many of these interactions might never turn into fruitful relationships. Instead we're just getting constant praise and applause from a distant (and seemingly digital) crowd.

Going back to your latest album, Meshuggah's and djent influence appears less evident than in the past. Is this a natural process due to a spontaneous evolution towards other musical territories? What has triggered this change?

It just feels like a natural progression from our previous album "Inmazes". That album was very controlled in a way, while the new album is allowed to be a bit more flawed in a human sense. One reason for this change is that we didn't want to make a second Inmazes, we wanted to create something different with this new album. But I would say that the main reason is simply because we love music where the drums are dirtier, where the guitars are more open and where we have room to experiment with many different ideas. Although we love the music of Meshuggah and similar music, we listen to plenty of other music too. We want to be able to explore many different avenues that interest us without being limited to something.


Sometimes, as in "Ruby Pool", the atmosphere becomes dreamy. What has been so far, musically speaking, your best daydreaming moment?

I can't really point to a specific daydreaming moment, but I definitely enjoy just taking in beautiful scenery and listening to some good music while daydreaming. I'm a huge fan of good soundtracks that capture specific moments and moods. That can be some perfect music for daydreaming.

In "Alien Shivers" the compression of the guitar sound creates an emotional explosion. Is this song going to be included in the setlist of your upcoming Italian shows?

We don't want to reveal the setlist yet, so you'd have to come to the shows to find out. But it's definitely one of the songs that we enjoy playing the most.


On this regards... you will be performing in our country from the 12 to the 14 of October. What would you like to anticipate to your Italian public today?

We're really looking forward to playing in Italy, it's a tremendously beautiful country with ties to so many different eras and cultures, it's so intriguing. We hope to see many happy faces in the crowds, we'll try our best to make the shows something special.


As you may possibly know already, your moniker means "he flies" in Italian. Where would you like to fly to if you could just win a last minute ticket? Why?

I would love to travel to Rome again! I went there over a year ago and visited many different places. The Vatican Museum and Villa Borghese stuck with me. I really mean it when I say that Italy is beautiful. It will be very exciting to get to experience Vicenza, Milan and Florence this time!
