Hello Arjen, good morning! How are you?

Hi Giulia, good morning! Hope I didn't wake you up! I'm good, I've just moved to a new house, so I'm busy with everything, but it's fine. I'm adjusting to the new place here, it's so different. It's like an old school built in 1921, so it's been rebuilt to a house like a long time ago. And it's huge, I get lost, I come out of a room and I have no idea where I am, like "Ok, do I go left or right?". It's in the middle of nowhere, so I also have a view over the fields. It's cool.

That sounds more like a castle! By the way, it's always a great pleasure to have you on SpazioRock.it.

Thank you, of course I remember the warm welcome at the airport last year. It was cool.

"Ayreon Universe" is an ambitious project that you managed to realize. What's the feeling of being the one making any metal music lover's dream come true?

It was about time I think. It was 22 years that I hadn't played live, I saw the reaction of the people that came to the theatre. People were so happy, there were so many emotions. Then I said to myself "You have to do it again, and I sould arrange it myself". Luckly I did it. It was a lot of work, it was two years of work. It was so fantastic to see how many people you made happy, not just the audience, not just the fans, but also the musicians, you know! (laughs Ed.) In the behind the scenes section included in the DVD there are interviews with all the musicians, at some point it gets annoying, but they all say "We're like one big happy family". But yeah, great feelings.

This DVD features your latest shows Tilburg the last September. If I'm not wrong it was more than a 2 hours concert with a 28 tracks setlist. Would you like to tell me more about that experience? How did you handle the concert from a technical point of view?

If I do Ayreon for the first time it has to be perfect. Ayreon is totally an over the top project, it's huge is bigger than life and I've always been afraid to do it live because I didn't think it would have been possible. When we decided to do it we were all like "It has to be perfect, it has to be big" and we realized that it would take us two years to set this up. Basically, immediatly when "The Theatre Equation" was over, we started working on this, and that's the only way you can do it, putting plenty of time in it, and not trying to do everything in the last two months, with a production like this it would become a mess. I'm a perfectionist, so what I said was "Ok let's work on that for one year and then it has to be finished, and then we have another year to perfect it". So, that was the idea.

During those shows, you brought on stage a long list of well renowned artist from the metal and rock music scene. How was it? I mean, working with very different musicians and everyone with his own style... I know this is no unsual for you, but I'm always wondering how you make this!

Well, especially this time because it was live it was very important for me that they were great people, not only great musicians or great singers. As soon as I got the feeling that someone was doing the show only for the money, or that someone was doing the show just to get some extra name or something, which did happen, I was "No, no, I want people that are really willing to do this, people that are really nice". Because I know that people can see that, when there's a bunch of singers on stage and they're all having fun and all acting out with each other, there's a lot of chemistry in the audience, I'm sure it gets across the audience. That was really important to me. Secondly, yes, they are very different singers. I like that, it creates a lot of dynamic in the show, also if you listen to the show there are some huge songs, and some delicate and atmospheric ones. That's the same with singers. I wanted singers that can sing very loud and high, but also singers that sing very delicate and very soft. The first thing that I told them is "No matter whether you know the song or not, please do it your own way, change everything you want into your style". I just wanted everyone to feel at home.

Are you happy with the song-singer matches you went for? Is there a song you would have given to another singer?

We worked very hard on this and we changed a lot, but we had time to do it, so that everything could be perfect for the show. So yeah, during the last year there were some changes, if a song and a singer didn't really work we just changed it. The singers were also telling me somtimes "I don't feel comfortable singing this song, can I sing another part?". Sometimes I had to push them. "Into The Black Hole" was originally sung by Bruce Dickinson, and I asked Tommy Karevik to sing it and he went "Oh no man, I'm not singing a song that was sang by Bruce Dickinson" and I went "Please, please, please Tommy, do it, I want you to do it your way, not the Bruce Dickinson way, but completely your way". That's my talent I think, you know, which songs are going to work with which singer. So yes, I'm perfectly happy.

Do you feel like telling us who is your favorite musician/artist among those you've worked with?

Oh no, no, no (laughs Ed.). No, just imagine that one of them is reading this interview and that wasn't him, that's crappy! I would never do that, of course I have my favourites, you know, but no, it's like a father saying who's his favourite son. I'm not gonna do that.

You're a good father, then!

Yes I am, keeping the family together.

In the rock and metal metal scene, the concept of music is very much related to the concept of a band, of a group of musicians/friends playing together. This is not your case, as you yourself are the band and with this project you managed to create a universal band. Is this the right interpretation of your concept of music?

The great thing about Ayreon is that it is more a project than a band. A lot of singers were also saying this in the interviews: with a band you get a routine at some point. You tour together for years, you play the same songs for years. Conversely, Ayreon everything is spontaneous, and I love that. We only did three shows, which is not enough to let the routine creep in, so I really like the spontaneity of the singers. That's the positive side. The negative side is that mistakes will be made, you know (laughs Ed.). People will come on stage and sing the wrong lyrics, because it's the first time in their lives that they sing these songs, or someone comes on stage with the wrong name behind. Stuff does go wrong, but I don't mind. I loved it, when I was a child and I was listening to live albums and there was something wrong, but people were just laughing about it.

I know you have a huge creative mind and your creative flow never stops! So I guess you have already started to work to something new, maybe with Ayreon...

I'm always working on new stuff, but as usual I don't know how it's going to be like, I keep changing my mind. Usually I start working on something as a solo project, it's what I like the most because I can do everything on my own, I don't have to contact people, I don't have to pay people (laughs Ed.), I can do everything in total freedom. But then it changes, "I want Tommy to sing on this", or "I want Floor to sing on that". And then it becomes a Star One, like "Oh yeah, let's make a metal project", and then I have a plan but as usual I don't know if I'll stick to the plan, so, again, I can't tell you.

Ayreon has always been a lot about science fiction. What is your favorite science fiction movie or book?

It all started for me with "Star Trek", when I was a small kid, in the Sixties, I was maybe like 10 years old. I saw this weird guy with pointy things on his head and the blue ladies and the really weird purple planets and I was all like "Oh My God, what is this?". I love all the Star Trek stuff, I love the New Generation series, it has the family feeling, that's what I like, it has humor, it has exploring things. I started with "Star Trek", but there are also other films that I really like, like "Alien", "2001", too many.

What about other projects? Can we expect something new? I gladly remind those shows with Anneke Van Giersbergen and your project Gentle Storm. Any chance to listen to another album?

Like I said before I do have these plans, but I never know how it's going to end up. Like with the Gentle Storm album, it was planned to be something completely different. I was working on these songs and then coincidently I got a call from Anneke at that time. That's the only reason why it became the Gente Storm project. So everything is possible.

Inspiration or recognition: what do you rely on most in your creative process?

Oh, inspiration. Absolutely. I don't give a shit about recognition (laughs Ed.). Well, of course I'm happy when I get mailed by fans telling me that I saved their lives, that my music makes them feel better. Of course that's one of the reasons we do music, but I wouldn't call it recognition. I don't really have that. Maybe that's also why I don't play live. I can imagine if you're an incredible guitar player and you want to be on stage and you want to be recognized. I don't have that because I don't think I am incredibly good. Inspiration is so important. That's why I'm watching a lot of TV series, I listen to a lot of music to get inspired. But yes, I wish I knew where inspiration come from, I would always be there to get it. You really cannot force it.

So you're not going to play any more shows?

No, at least not on a regular basis. This show was so great that I talked with Joost and he said we cannot do it just once, we have to do it again. It won't be this year, maybe next year. But we should definitely do it again. But I don't want a "part II". Part II are never good, going back to movies, I loved "Alien" but I didn't love "Alien 2". Of course this year we have the festival show, but it's just one show. So I would say then once every two years.

You are very social. You love to talk with you fans on social networks and make announcements in this way. Tell me the funniest or the most strange fact you have experienced regarding online contacts.

My fans are not that weird (laughs Ed.). I remember when I was in my wild days, it was the sex, drugs, rock days. There was plenty of crazy people there, it was totally crazy. I could tell you stories about that, but I guess won't, I'd get into troubles with my girlfriend (laughs Ed.). But now it's just nice and decent people, my fans. They're all as boring nerds as I am. If you look at the behind the scenes on the DVD there are also interviews with the audience, and it's all really nice people. There's no "Oh fuck you man! Rock'n'Roll!" (screams Ed.). Well, that used to be my audience, but not anymore. It's a loyal audience. That's why I'm so social, because without them I would be nowhere.

Last and apparently simple question. What does music mean to you?

Really everything. It's really boring answer, but it's everything, ever since I was a small kid I was stuck to the radio, I'd be completely lost without music. If I'd lose my hearing I would quit life the very next moment.

It's time to say goodbye, so, thank you so much for your time and would you please leave a message to your Italian fans and to those who will read this interview?

Sure, of course we've been to Italy with Anneke, it's such a great crowd, so enthusiastic. We played a couple of shows in other countries, but then we came to Italy and people went completely crazy. I remember when we were playing "Valley Of The Queens" and people were like screaming the words (he imitates them screaming the lyrics Ed.), it was such a delicate ballad, people should be crying (laughs Ed). I had to stop playing because I was laughing so hard. I really love it. Sorry if I don't tour anymore, but I love Italian people. There were a lot of Italians at the show, you can see it from the DVD. I hope you guys will like the DVD.

Ciao Arjen, buongiorno! Come va?

Ciao Giulia, buongiorno a te! Spero di non averti svegliata... tutto bene, ho appena cambiato casa, quindi sono un po' preso dal trasloco, ma va tutto bene. Mi sto ambientando, è molto diverso. È una vecchia scuola che fu costruita nel 1921 e poi è diventata una casa. Ed è enorme, mi ci perdo: esco da una stanza e non ho idea di dove io si, tipo "Ok, vado a destra o a sinistra?". Poi è in mezzo al nulla, ho una vista sui campi. È bello.

Sembra più un castello che una casa! Comunque, è sempre un piacere averti su SpazioRock!

Grazie! Ovviamente non mi posso dimenticare l'accoglienza che ho ricevuto l'anno scorso in aeroporto, è stato bellissimo.

"Ayreon Universe" è un progetto davvero ambizioso ma che tu sei riuscito a mettere in pratica. Come ti senti ad essere la persona che ha realizzato il sogno di ogni metallaro?

Penso che fosse giunto il momento. Erano 22 anni che non suonavo dal vivo, ho visto le reazioni delle persone presenti in teatro. Erano così così felici, si percepivano così tante emozioni. Poi mi sono detto "Devi rifarlo, e devo pensarci io". E poi per fortuna l'ho fatto. È stato un lavoro enorme, sono stati due anni di lavoro. È stato fantastico vedere quante persone fossi riuscito a rendere felici, e non parlo solo del pubblico e dei fan, ma anche dei musicisti (ride NdR)! Nel "dietro le quinte" presente nel DVD ci sono interviste con tutti i musicisti, ad un certo punto è anche quasi fastidioso, ma sono tutti lì a dire "Siamo tutti una grande famiglia felice". Comunque sì, grandi emozioni.

Il DVD ritrae il tuo ultimo concerto a Tilburg lo scorso settembre. Se non sbaglio erano circa 2 ore di concerto con una setlist di 28 brani. Raccontami com'è andata, come hai gestito a livello tecnico un concerto di questo tipo?

Se porto Ayreon sul palco per la prima volta deve essere perfetto. Ayreon è un progetto immenso e ho sempre avuto paura a farlo dal vivo perchè non pensavo che sarebbe stato possibile. Quando abbiamo deciso di farlo abbiamo capito che ci sarebbero voluti due anni per metterlo in piedi. In pratica, abbiamo iniziato a lavorarci non appena concluso "The Theatre Equation", e dedicargli tutto quel tempo era l'unico modo di realizzarlo, senza tentare di fare tutto negli ultimi due mesi. Sarebbe diventato un disastro, io sono un perfezionista quindi ho detto "Ok, lavoriamoci per un anno e finiamolo, così poi avremo un altro anno per perfezionarlo". L'idea era questa.

Durante quegli show hai portato sul palco un numero altissimo di nomi molto importanti della scena rock e metal. Com'è stata questa esperienza per te? Intendo dire, lavorare con tanti musicisti diversi tra loro, ognuno con il proprio stile... so che non è una novità per te, ma mi chiedo sempre come tu faccia!

Be', in particolare in questo caso, visto che si trattava di show dal vivo, era molto importante per me che quelle persone fossero belle persone, non solo bravi musicisti e cantanti. Non appena sentivo che qualcuno lo stava facendo solo per soldi o visibilità, cosa che è effettivamente successa, pensavo solo "No no, voglio brave persone che ci tengano davvero". Perchè so che la gente poi se ne accorge, quando ci sono dei cantanti sul palco che si divertono e che interagiscono, c'è un sacco di chimica sul palco che so che riesce ad attraversare il pubblico. Questo è davvero importante per me. In secondo luogo, sì, sono tutti cantanti molto diversi. Mi piace molto questa cosa, crea molta dinamica all'interno dello show, se senti il concerto, ci sono canzoni imponenti e altre più delicate e d'atmosfera. È lo stesso con i cantanti, volevo artisti che sapessero cantare forte e alto, ma anche altri più delicati e soft. La prima cosa che ho detto loro è stata "Non importa che conosciate o meno il brano, per favore, fatelo vostro, cambiate tutto ciò che volete per tradurla nel vostro stile". Volevo solo che si sentissero a proprio agio.

Sei soddisfatto degli abbinamenti canzone-cantante che hai scelto?

Abbiamo lavorato davvero duro su questo progetto e abbiamo cambiato molte cose, ma avevamo il tempo di farlo, in modo che fosse tutto perfetto per lo show. Quindi sì, nel corso dell'ultimo anno ci sono stati dei cambiamenti, se una canzone e un cantante non funzionavano insieme, semplicemente si cambiava. I cantanti stessi a volte mi dicevano "Non mi sento a mio agio a cantare questa canzone, posso cantare un'altra parte?". A volte dovevo un po' spingerli. "Into The Black Hole" era cantata originariamente da Bruce Dickinson, poi ho chiesto a Tommy Karevik di cantarla e lui fa: "Oh no amico, non canterò mai una canzone che era cantata da Bruce Dickinson" e gli dico "Per favore Tommy, ti prego, falla, voglio che tu la faccia a modo tuo, non come la fa Bruce Dickinson, ma completamente a modo tuo". Credo che sia questo il mio talento, capire quali canzoni andranno bene a quale cantante. Comunque sì, sono completamente soddisfatto.

Te la senti di dirci qual è il tuo artista preferito di quelli con cui hai lavorato?

Oh no, no no (ride NdR). No, immagina solo che uno di loro legga questa intervista e non legga il suo nome, sarebbe orribile! Non lo farei mai, ovviamente ho i miei preferiti, ma è come un padre che dice qual è il suo figlio preferito. Non lo farò.

Sei un buon padre allora...

Sì, lo sono, cerco di tenere insieme la famiglia.

Nella musica rock e metal l'idea di musica è molto legata al concetto di band, di gruppo di musicisti e amici che suonano insieme. Nel tuo caso, però, sei stato tu stesso la band, e questa volta hai dimostrato che esiste una sorta di band universale. È questa l'interpretazione corretta della tua idea di musica?

La cosa bella in questo caso, è che si tratta più un progetto che di una band. Molti cantanti hanno detto questa cosa nelle interviste, cioè che con la band ad un certo punto entri in una sorta di routine. Vai in tour insieme per anni, suoni le stesse canzoni per anni. Ma con Ayreon tutto è spontaneo e io amo tutto ciò che è spontaneo. Abbiamo fatto solo tre concerti, che non sono sufficienti perchè la routine si insinui, quindi sì, mi piace molto la spontaneità dei cantanti. Questo è il lato positivo. Il lato negativo è che verranno commessi degli errori (ride NdR). Le persone saliranno sul palco e canteranno i testi sbagliati, perchè è la prima volta nelle loro vite che cantano quelle canzoni, o qualcuno sale sul palco con il nome sbagliato dietro. Le cose possono anche andare male, ma non mi interessa. Mi piace anche questo, quando ero piccolo ascoltavo i live album e c'erano degli errori, ma la gente ne rideva.

So che hai una mente estremamente creativa e il tuo flusso artistico non si ferma mai! Quindi credo che tu stia lavorando anche in questo momento a qualcosa di nuovo legato ad Ayreon...

Sono costantemente al lavoro su cose nuove, ma come sempre non so che forma prenderà, continuo a cambiare idea. Di solito inizio a lavorare su progetti solisti, è quello che preferisco perchè faccio tutto da solo, non devo contattare le persone, non devo pagare le persone (ride NdR). Ma poi tutto cambia, e penso "voglio che Tommy canti questo!" oppure "voglio che Floor canti quello". E poi diventa una cosa come Star One "Sì dai, facciamo un progetto metal", e ho un piano, ma come sempre non so se mi atterrò ad esso, quindi, di nuovo, non so esattamente cosa dire!

Ayreon è sempre stato legato al tema della fantascienza. Qual è il tuo film preferito?

È iniziato tutto con "Star Trek", quando ero un bambino negli anni Sessanta, avevo forse 10 anni. Vidi questo tizio strano con delle cose appuntite sulla testa e le signore blu e i pianeti viola davvero strani e dicevo "Oddio, cos'è questa cosa?". Amo tutto ciò che riguarda "Star Trek", amo la serie della Nuova Generazione, ha quel senso di familiarità, è ciò che mi piace, c'è dello humor, c'è l'esplorazione. Ho iniziato con "Star Trek" ma ci sono anche altri film che amo come "Alien" o "2001", troppi.

Che mi dici degli altri progetti? Possiamo aspettarci cose nuove? Mi ricordo con piacere gli show con Anneke Van Giersbergen e il tuo progetto Gentle Storm. Ci sono delle possibilità di sentire qualcos'altro?

Come ti dicevo prima ho tutti questi piani, ma non so mai come evolveranno. Come con l'album dei Gentle Storm, all'inizio doveva essere una cosa completamente diversa. Stavo lavorando su delle canzoni e nello stesso momento ho ricevuto una telefonata da Anneke. Questo è l'unico motivo per cui è diventato il progetto Gentle Storm. Quindi tutto è possibile.

Ispirazione o riconoscimento: su cosa punti di più durante il tuo processo creativo?

Oh, l'ispirazione. Assolutamente. Non me ne frega niente dei riconoscimenti (ride NdR). Vabè, ovvio che quando ricevo messaggi dai fan che mi dicono che ho salvato le loro vite, che la mia musica li fa sentire meglio. Ovvio che quello è uno dei motivi per cui faccio musica, ma non lo chiamerei riconoscimento. Non credo di averne davvero. Forse è anche perchè non suono dal vivo, capisco che se sei un musicista incredibile e vuoi stare sul palco e vuoi che ciò che fai venga riconosciuto. Non credo di avere quella sensazione perchè non penso di essere un musicista incredibilmente bravo. L'ispirazione è davvero molto importante. È per questo che guardo un sacco di serie TV, che ascolto un sacco di musica... per trovare ispirazione. Ma sì, vorrei sapere da dove arriva l'ispirazione, sarei sempre lì printo ad acchiapparla. Non puoi forzarla.

Quindi non dobbiamo aspettarci altre esibizioni live?

No, o almeno, non regolarmente. Questo show è stato talmente incredibile che sono andato da Joost e gli ho detto che è una cosa che non puoi fare una volta sola, dobbiamo rifarlo. Non sarà quest'anno, magari l'anno prossimo. Ma dobbiamo rifarlo. Però non voglio una "parte 2". Le "parti 2" non sono mai buone, tornando ai film, mi è piaciuto "Alien", ma "Alien 2" no. Poi quest'anno abbiamo il festival, ma è solo uno show. Ma sì, penso che lo rifaremo una volta ogni 2 anni.

Si può dire che tu sia molto social. Ami parlare con i tuoi fan sui social network e fai anche i tuoi annunci in questo modo. Raccontami la tua esperienza più divertente o strana che ti è capitata in questo ambito.

I miei fan non sono così strani (ride NdR). Mi ricordo nei miei anni più pazzi, erano gli anni delle droghe, del sesso e del rock. C'era un sacco di gente matta allora, davvero pazza. Potrei raccontarti qualcosa di quel periodo, ma non credo che lo farò, andrei nei casini con la mia ragazza (ride NdR). Ma ora i miei fan sono persone carine e per bene. Sono tutti dei nerd noiosi come me. Se guardi il behind the scenes del DVD ci sono anche delle interviste con il pubblico, e sono tutte davvero belle persone. Non c'è nessun "Oh fuck you man! Rock'n'roll" (urla NdR). Quello era il mio vecchio pubblico, ma ora è diverso. È un pubblico fedele. È per questo che sono così social, perchè senza di loro non sarei mai andato da nessuna parte.

Ultima e apparentemente semplice domanda. Cosa significa per te la musica?

È davvero tutto per me. Lo so che è una risposta noiosa, ma è così, è tutto, da quando ero bambino, quando mi attaccavo alla radio. Sarei completamente perso senza la musica. Se dovessi perdere l'udito penso che abbandonerei la mia vita nel momento appena successivo.

È giunto il momento di salutarci, ti ringrazio del tempo che ci hai dedicato e ti chiedo di lasciare un messaggio ai tuoi fan italiani e a tutti quelli che leggeranno questa intervista.

Certo, siamo stati in Italia con Anneke, il pubblico è incredibile, è così entusiasta. Abbiamo fatto un paio di concerti in altri paesi, ma poi siamo venuti in Italia e la gente davvero impazziva. Mi ricordo quando stavamo suonando "Valley Of The Queens" e la gente urlava a pieni polmoni ogni parola (li imita urlando le parole della canzone NdR), era un brano così dolce, la gente dovrebbe commuoversi (ride NdR). Ho dovuto smettere di suonare perchè stavo ridendo troppo. Lo adoro veramente. Scusate se non faccio più tour, ma amo gli italiani. Ce n'erano tantissimi al concerto, si vede dal DVD. Spero che vi piaccia!
