Hi Roy, it's a great pleasure to have the chance to welcome you back after all these years. We were definitely looking forward to it. There was a time when you used to sing "a song of life"... as you once called it. It includes a line which has always struck a chord in me as I am sure in many others out there: "Some day we may come to peace with the world within ourselves". Has this day finally come for you?

Hi Costanza. Requests are coming in rapidly these days, but this happens to be the first music related interview I do in about 7 years. Thanks for your interest! These are indeed exciting times and I am superstoked about being back! Regarding your question: I doubt I'll ever come to peace with my inner self, but I have found ways to deal with it.

I am sure all your fans are curious to know if there was any special event that triggered your desire to be part of a band again or it was something that had been growing inside of you for a while? Any sort of nostalgia for the early days with Conception, in the '90s, when things were easier perhaps?

I have been working as a teacher and at a church the last years...all good, but I guess it's time to get back to what I do best; writing, composing and of course singing. There was no special event that triggered it. Tore and the other guys have all been good friends all these years, and the reunion of Conception slowly came into realization as we talked about it.

Who was the first of you guys to push the reunion idea froward?

Tore and Arve approached me with some ideas for songs. The ball kept rolling to the point we're at today; with a campaign at Pledgemusic.com
This campaign will determine what happens next, so I urge people who'd like us back in the biz to support this full force.

I remember when I was introduced to Kamelot's music, I was told that the songs were amazing but what really made the difference was the singer's approach to performing, in studio and especially on stage. Then I saw you live in 2007 and I could see what they meant. You really put your soul into delivering music to your public. When I heard about the split in 2011, I thought you may just need to recharge your inner self, as you had given away too much of it. Was that the case?

Happy to hear you like my performing. A recharge was indeed needed at that time...to put it mildly, but it's a long and weird story...too long and too weird for an interview.

After all these years away from the scene, what is your main concern, if any, in facing the world out there?

My only concern is to deliver 100%...I am an «all in» type of personality.

And your greatest hope?

Maybe boring, but I just hope fans and people out there like our new stuff.

Your coming back to music was announced by the notes of "For All" a month ago which sounds as a sort of confession on the one hand and of recap of on the other. May I ask you when have you actually written it?

The music for «For All» was mainly done before I announced my departure from Kamelot publicly in 2011, but the lyrics were finalized right before Easter this year.

"For All" is not really consistent with Conception style so I assume it was your own way to say: "I am ready". Isn't it?

To some extent you're right on this one. It was also important for me to release a song stating my beliefs before I did anything else...like Conception e.g.

I believe the lyrics of this latest release of yours confirm how important your religious belief has been for you, especially in these latest years. Am I right if I say that your involvement with the Moss Frikirke choir had been your closest contact with music for a while? How this experience played a part in your personal growth?

Yup...I have only sung at churches all these years. I am not sure what effect it has had on my personal growth however.

If not for your public, how often have you been singing for yourself, at least, over these seven years?

Almost nothing at all...

Can we expect anything still religious-related, at least concept/meaning-wise, from the tracks to be included in the upcoming Conception EP?

Conception is by no means a christian band, but existential, spiritual and religious issues have always been present in Conception's lyrics. So...possibly!

And musically speaking, have you and the other members of the band just resumed from where you had left it with "Flow" 21 years ago or, thanks to these two decades of experience in between, are you now trying a different approach?

This is hard to answer...the new material does not sound like anything we've done before. At the same time I believe it sounds 100% Conception. Guess you'll have to judge yourself when it's out.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the hardest aspect of the end of your long relationship with Kamelot?

I'd rather ask: «What was not hard about it?» Leaving the other guys behind at the top of our career sucked. Saying farewell to all the attention and all the money sucked. Disappointing collaborators and fans all over the world sucked. Getting hate mail from people who had no idea sucked. Not being able to do what I love the most sucked. The list is pretty much endless...yet it is the best decision I have ever made.

Have you listened to their latest release?

Yes I have. I really like some of their new stuff. Sounds classical Kamelot in my ears, and Tommy is a great singer.

Going back to this second phase of your path with Conception, the band has been promoting a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMusic and I think the people reaction has been quite good so far. What is the band target, if it is not a secret?

Our only goal with this is to get as much in as possible so we can deliver a product that is as good as absolutely possible. Considering our back catalogue and what we have done in other bands we are obviously aiming high. Fans who fund us via the Pledge-campaign are in reality the ones bringing us back to life and the more support we have the more life you get, sort of speak. You can also help the band by posting & linking to the campaign on blogs and boards. Fundamentally we'd appreciate anything that could back this reunion up.

Have you guys already been considering live shows and any dates outside Norway? If so, should we really have to wait for the release of the EP next autumn to see you back on stage together?

I see offers for festivals and concerts are flooding in right now, but touring is not an issue at this stage. As of today we have no plans for any gigs at all...in Norway or anywhere else.

Ciao Costanza. Stanno arrivando tantissime richieste in questi giorni, ma questa è la prima intervista che riguarda la musica che faccio da sette anni. Grazie per il vostro interesse! È un periodo davvero emozionante, sono davvero a mille e contentissimo di essere tornato! Per quanto riguarda la tua domanda, dubito del fatto che arriverò mai ad essere in pace con me stesso, ma ho trovato dei modi per conviverci.

Sono sicura che tutti i tuoi fan sono curiosi di sapere se ci sia stato un momento particolare che ha innescato il tuo desiderio di tornare ad essere parte di una band, oppure è stato qualcosa che è cresciuto dentro di te lentamente? Magari c'è stato qualche momento di nostalgia dei tempi con i Conception, negli anni '90, quando le cose erano forse più semplici...

Ho lavorato come insegnante e in una chiesa negli ultimi anni... è stato bello, ma penso che sia ora di tornare a fare ciò che faccio meglio: scrivere, comporre e ovviamente cantare. Non c'è stato un evento in particolare che ha scatenato questo desiderio. Tore e gli altri sono sempre stati dei grandi amici in questi anni e la reunion dei Conception è diventata lentamente realtà nel momento in cui ne abbiamo parlato.

Chi di voi ha spinto maggiormente per la reunion?

Tore e Arve sono venuti da me con delle idee per nuove canzoni. E poi le cose si sono evolute portandoci dove siamo ora, con una campagna su Pledgemusic.com. Questa campagna determinerà cosa succederà poi, quindi incoraggio le persone che vorrebbero rivederci in giro di supportarla con tutte le loro forze.

Mi ricordo quando conobbi i Kamelot. Mi dissero che le canzoni erano fantastiche, ma che ciò davvero faceva la differenza era il modo in cui il cantante si esibiva in studio ma soprattutto sul palco. Poi vi ho visti nel 2007 e ho potuto vedere con i miei occhi cosa intendessero. Ci metti davvero l'anima quando doni la tua musica al tuo pubblico. Quando ho sentito dello split nel 2011, ho pensato che dovessi solo ricaricarti, avendo dato via molto di ciò che avevi dentro. È andata così?

Sono contento di sentire che ti piace come mi esibisco. Un momento di pausa e di ricarca era assolutamente necessario in quel momento... la racconto così per indorare la pillola, ma è una storia lunga e complicata, troppo lunga e complicata per un'intervista.

Dopo tutti questi anni lontano delle scene, qual è la tua preoccupazione maggiore nell'affrontare di nuovo questo mondo, se ne hai?

L'unica cosa che mi interessa è di riuscire a dare il 100%. Sono un tipo che vuole sempre dare tutto.

E la tua più grande speranza?

Forse è banale, ma spero semplicemente che i fans e le persone apprezzino il materiale nuovo.

Il tuo ritorno sulle scene è stato preannunciato dalle note di "For All" un mese fa. Suona come una sorta di confessione da una parte e di un riepilogo dall'altra. Quando è stata scritta?

La musica di "For All" è stata scritta principalmente prima che io annunciassi la mia dipartita dai Kamelot pubblicamente nel 2011, ma il testo è stato messo a punto appena prima di Pasqua di quest'anno.

"For All" non è molto assimilabile allo stile dei Conception, quindi penso che fosse il tuo modo di dire "Sono pronto". È vero?

In un certo senso hai ragione. Per me era anche importante pubblicare una canzone che manifestasse ciò in cui io stesso credo, prima di fare qualunque altra cosa, come i Conception ecc...

Credo che il testo di questo brano confermi quanto il tuo credo religioso sia stato importante per te, soprattutto negli ultimi anni. Si può dire che il tuo coinvolgimento con il coro Moss Frikirke sia stato il tuo contatto più stretto con la musica per un bel po'? In che modo questa esperienza ha influito sulla tua crescita personale?

Sì... ho cantato solo in chiesa in questi anni. Ma non so che effetto possa avermi fatto a livello personale.

E se non per il pubblico, quanto hai cantato per te stesso negli ultimi sette anni?

Quasi per nulla...

Possiamo aspettarci qualcosa di legato alla religione, almeno per quanto riguarda il concept/significato, dalle tracce che veranno incluse nel prossimo EP dei Conception?

I Conception non sono in nessun modo una band cristiana, ma questioni esistenziali, spirituali e religiose sono sempre state presenti nei testi dei Conception. Quindi... forse!

E dal punto di vista musicale, avete ricominciato da dove vi siete fermati con "Flow" 21 anni fa o, grazie a queste due decadi di esperienza che sono trascorse nel frattempo, avete tentato un nuovo approccio?

È difficile rispondere a questa domanda... il nuovo materiale non è simile a nulla che abbiamo mai fatto in precedenza. Allo stesso tempo credo che suoni al 100% Conception. Direi che giudicherete voi stessi quando sarà pubblicato.

Se non è un problema fare questa domanda, vorrei sapere qual è stata la parte più difficile della fine della tua relazione con i Kamelot.

Io chiederei piuttosto "Cosa non è stato difficile di quella fase?". Lasciare gli altri nel momento più alto della nostra carriera è stato veramente orribile. Dire addio a tutta l'attenzione, a tutti i soldi, è stato orribile. Deludere i collaboratori e i fan in tutto il mondo è stato orribile. Ricevere email piene di odio da parte di persone che non avevano idea di cosa stesse succedendo è stato orribile. Non essere in grado di fare ciò che amo di più è stato orribile. La lista è abbastanza infinita... ma nonostante tutto è la decisione migliore che io abbia mai preso.

Hai sentito il loro nuovo album?

Sì. Alcune cose mi piacciono davvero tanto. Mi sembrano i Kamelot classici e Tommy è un grande cantante.

Tornando a questa seconda fase del tuo percorso con i Conception, la band ha promosso una campagna di crowdfunding su PledgeMusic e penso che la risposta del pubblico sia stata buona fino ad ora. Qual è l'obiettivo della band, se non è un segreto?

Il nostro unico obiettivo è di ottenere il più possibile, in modo da poter rilasciare un prodotto migliore possibile. Considerando il nostro repertorio e ciò che abbiamo fatto con altre band stiamo ovviamente puntando in alto. I fan che ci hanno trovati attraverso Pledge-campaign sono quelli che ci hanno riportati in vita, e più supporto ti viene dato, più ti senti pieno di vita. È anche possibile aiutare la band postando e linkando la campagna su blog e bacheche. Fondamentalmente, apprezzeremmo qulunque tipo di azione che potesse far diventare realtà questa reunion.

Avete già pensato a concerti o date fuori dalla Norvegia? Se sì, dobbimo davvero aspettare la pubblicazione dell'EP il prossimo autunno prima di vedervi di nuovo sul palco insieme?

Vedo proposte per festival e concerti arrivare di continuo in questo momento, ma andare in tour non è contemplato in questa fase. Ad oggi, non abbiamo in programma nessuna data, né in Norvegia, né altrove.
