Ciao Marcel, è un piacere averti nuovamente su SpazioRock.it! "Born To Perish" è un nuovo capitolo nella lunga storia dei Destruction. Puoi raccontarci di più circa gli sviluppi dell'album?

E' un album speciale per noi perché abbiamo cambiato la nostra line up appena prima di registrarlo. La scorsa estate abbiamo introdotto Randy, alla batteria, e un secondo chitarrista. Questo ha implicato una procedura diversa prima e durante la registrazione in studio. Uscire un po' dai ranghi e "sperimentare" qualcosa di diverso è stato fantastico, così come lavorare con due chitarre. Abbiamo avuto modo di fare esperienza e rendere tutto migliore. Penso che non registravamo con due chitarre almeno da 20 anni!

Uno degli obbiettivi del nuovo album é quello di creare un massiccio muro sonoro di chitarre, qual è il punto di forza di questa combinazione in termini di sonoritá?

Credo che l'obiettivo principale sia sempre quello di fare in modo che i Destruction suonino come i Destruction. Ora che abbiamo due chitarristi e l'opportunità di aggiungere al nostro sound più armonia e assoli. E' sempre difficile lavorare con due chitarre insieme perché si hanno molte più idee. Sono stato io a spingere per avere due chitarre in modo tale da suonare più assoli che è sempre un punto in più per la resa live della band e credo, inoltre, che abbiamo raggiunto un certo livello di tecnicità, visibile per esempio nello shredding delle chitarre che rende le nostre canzoni più accattivanti. La combinazione tra canzoni accattivanti e tecnicità è un buon punto d'arrivo che credo abbiamo raggiunto in questo album.

Cosa è cambiato secondo te nella scena thrash contemporanea paragonata agli anni d'oro di questo genere musicale? Credi che il thrash metal abbia ancora qualcuno a cui rivolgersi nel 2019?

Ciò che è cambiato per noi è che suoniamo la stessa musica ma ad un livello più professionale, perché si sa che quando sei una giovane band e inizi a suonare c'è tanta follia e inesperienza. Credo che ora un sacco di band emergenti stiano facendo lo stesso, iniziano a suonare thrash metal con lo stessa follia che avevamo noi alla loro età, seguendo i nostri passi. E' fantastico vedere come il thrash metal sia ancora vivo e vegeto grazie a questa nuova generazione di ragazzi che continuano a suonarlo.

Quali canzoni dell'album vi hanno permesso di sperimentare maggiormente rispetto al vostro ultimo album "Under Attack"?

Cerchiamo sempre di aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo al nostro sound, ma rimaniamo pur sempre una band thrash. Ruota tutto intorno alla velocità d'esecuzione e a suoni brutali. Credo tuttavia che ci siano delle canzoni diverse, come "Butchered For Life" in cui si possono trovare chitarre acustiche e momenti più "atmospheric", qualcosa che non facevamo da tanti anni. Così come in "Ratcatcher" in cui c'è un sacco di batteria e percussioni, cosa altrettanto inusuale per noi. Queste sono le due canzoni che si differenziano dal resto dell'album per una direzione musicale un po' più lenta e "atmospheric". Nel complesso è un album veloce, duro e oscuro ma ci sono anche dei momenti melodici e groovie. E' una buona combinazione di tutti questi elementi.

Parlaci della cover di "Born To Perish", cosa rappresenta l'avvoltoio?

L'avvoltoio rappresenta l'atteggiamento degli uomini oggi, una doppia faccia. Riflette l'avidità umana alla perfezione. Gli avvoltoi infatti si uccidono l'un l'altro quando combattono per il successo e il dominio. Questo mi ricorda l'attuale situazione del nostro pianeta, stiamo diventando sempre più egoisti e non ci curiamo più dell'altro.

Puoi nominare una band tedesca o americana che abbia influenzato il vostro background musicale sin dagli albori della vostra carriera?

Tutte le nostre influenze musicali provengono dagli anni '80. Quando abbiamo iniziato a suonare, il metal come lo si intende oggi non esisteva ancora e c'erano prevalentemente gruppi punk-rock, oltre naturalmente alla New Wave British Heavy Metal. Una canzone che ci ha particolarmente ispirati è "Fast As Shark" degli Accept, una delle prime band tedesche a sperimentare questo genere. Anche i Dead Kennedys ci hanno influenzato parecchio.

E' il momento di una fan-curiosity: avete intenzione di suonare altri show con la mascotte Mad Butcher?

Portarlo live con noi è stata un'idea folle. Cerchiamo di conservare la mascotte per degli show speciali è per questo che non compare spesso durante le nostre esibizioni.

L'intervista é giunta al termine, grazie del tuo tempo! Vorresti lasciare un messaggio ai vostri fan italiani e ai nostri lettori?

Certamente, saremo presto in tour e spero che il nuovo album vi piaccia! Abbiamo già in programma qualche show in Italia, i nostri concerti lì sono sempre pazzeschi!

Hi Marcel, it's very nice to have you back on SpazioRock.it! "Born To Perish" is a new chapter in the long history of Destruction. Can you tell us more about the development of the record?

It's a special record for us because we had the line up changed before the recording, Randy, on the drums, joined us last summer and we also added a second guitarist to the band so there was a different procedure before the recording and in the studio this time. It was really cool to step out of the box and have something different, also working with two guitars was exciting, we could experience more and make everything better. We didn't record with two guitars since 20 years, I think.

One of the goals of this record is to create a massive walls of guitars so what's the trade mark of this sound combination?

I think the main aim is always to make Destruction sound like Destruction. Now that we have two guitarists we had the opportunity to add more armony, more solos and guitar work together. It's always tricky when the guitars work together because a lot of details are happening, they have a whole universe of ideas. I was pushing the guitarists to play more solos and try new stuff because for the live situation it's a big plus and I think we have managed to get a certain level of technical sound, a lot of shredding going on, but also songs that are quite catchy. I think it's a great mixture between catchy songs and a technical level of the band that we have reached in this record.

What's changed in the current thrash metal scene compared to the golden age of this music genre and do you feel that the thrash metal scene has still someone to talk to in 2019?

What's changed for us is that we are still playing the same music that we played back in the day, but in a more professional level because when you're young you're just starting and playing music really crazy. Now I feel that a lot of young bands are doing the same. A lot of young bands are starting playing thrash metal and having the same craziness as us following our footsteps and it's all good to see that thrash metal won't die thanks to this new generation of kids that play this kind of music.

Which songs of the record are more "experimental" and in which way compared to your previous record "Under Attack"?

We are always trying to add more flavours to our sound but of course we are always a thrash metal band and it's all about brutality and speed, but I think that in this record there are some songs that sound a bit different from the last one like "Butchered For Life" is a song that contains some acoustic guitar and some atmospheric moments that's something we didn't do for many years, also "Ratcatcher" has a lot of drums and percussions which is also unusual for us. Those two songs stick out from the rest of the album and also the musical direction is a little bit more slower and atmospheric. It's a fast and hard beating album, evil and dark but we also have some moments that are more melodic, atmospheric and groovie. It's a good mixture of all these elements.

Let's talk about the cover of this new record, what's the meaning of the vulture?

The vulture stands for the attitude of humanity today, like two faces. It reflects the greed of humanity really well. Voltures kill each other when they fight for the praise and it reminds me of the development of this planet, we're getting more and more selfish and we don't watch each other anymore.

Could you name an American or German band that made your music background since your beginning?

All the influence that we have comes from the 80s, when we started as musicians there were some punk bands and of course the new wave british heavy metal that influenced us. The song "Fast As A Shark" from the band Accept was a speed metal song with crazy guitars, very important for us because it was the first German band at the time that played this kind of songs. Band like Dead Kennedys those were important as well.

It's time for a fan curiosity: are you going to play some other shows with the mascotte Mad Butcher?

Bringing him live was a crazy idea. We only keep him for special shows and we don't do that too often because it should be something special when he's live with us.

We're gonna come back on tour soon and I hope you're gonna like the new album! We have a lot of shows coming and we should be back in Italy for some more thrash metal. We always have crazy shows in Italy!
