Parliamo un po' di "Hungry Ghost", come ti è venuta l'idea di un album solista? Sei soddisfatto del risultato?

Ho iniziato a scrivere canzoni più folk un paio di anni fa, ma è stato solo verso la metà dello scorso anno che ho deciso di concentrarmi di più su di esse e di pubblicarle, per poi suonarle dal vivo e così via. Per i Blues Pills questo non è un anno molto impegnato, giusto una manciata di concerti, perciò ho avuto più tempo del solito per dedicarmi ad un progetto musicale diverso. Sono molto soddisfatto del risultato, questo ep è stato registrato per lo più dal vivo con un microfono e direttamente su nastro. Quindi penso che catturi al meglio l'esecuzione più pura delle canzoni, senza sovraincisioni o altri trucchetti da studio.

Vorresti spiegarci un po' il contenuto tematico di questo lavoro?

Be’, dal punto di vista dei testi non è proprio l'album più felice di tutti i tempi. Ho preso un sacco di ispirazione da storie spiacevoli di vita. Sentimenti come la perdita, la nostalgia, l'autodistruzione sono temi ricorrenti e sono ispirato dai miei stessi sentimenti, dall'oscurità e da quello che vedo in altre persone. Alcune canzoni parlano di un'esperienza diretta di qualcuno vicino a me o di qualcosa a cui ho assistito direttamente, altre sono un po' più vage e descrivono un sentimento più che una vera e propria esperienza. Solitamente scrivo testi che non sono troppo diretti, in modo tale da poter essere intepretati in vari modi a seconda dell'ascoltatore. Certo, hanno però un significato diretto per me.

Penso che gli album solisti abbiano la particolarità di essere molto intimi e personali. Cosa rappresenta questa release per te?

Sono d'accordo. Questo è il disco più intimo e personale nel quale io sia mai stato coinvolto. È anche quello nel quale sono stato più coinvolto e questa è probabilmente è la spiegazione principale del perché suoni così personale. Mi sento come se mi aprissi musicalmente al mondo senza nascondere nulla ed è una sensazione molto emozionante e spaventosa al tempo stesso. Scrivere canzoni così personali e suonarle di fronte alla gente è stato un passaggio considerevole, che ha richiesto un po' di tempo, ma che fino ad ora è stato decisamente grandioso.

Secondo te, quanto contribuisce cantare e suonare in acustico a questo tipo di intimità?

Credo che conti parecchio. Non puoi nascondere molto mentre stai cantando e suonando una chitarra acustica. Anche la scrittura attraverso la chitarra acustica e nient'altro ha un impatto nel modo in cui suonerà il risultato finale. È più intimo perché non ti puoi nascondere dietro l'effettistica o dietro altri musicisti, né dietro suoni pesanti o rumorosi.

Non siamo così abituati a vederti suonare una chitarra acustica coi Blues Pills, come descriveresti il tuo rapporto con questo strumento? Pensi che sia più facile o difficile da suonare?

Mi piace molto suonare la chitarra acustica, mi rilassa tantissimo e puoi fare davvero tanto giocando con l'accordatura aperta e così via. Può essere più difficile visto che non può essere solo basato su pentatoniche e fraseggi come potrebbe essere a volte con l'elettrica. Adoro il finger picking, che può essere tanto difficile quanto bellissimo in canzoni più tecniche. È tutto un'altro insieme di sfide per la mano destra rispetto a suonare con un plettro e richiede il dovuto tempo per abituarsi.

Quali sono i pro e i contro di registrare un album tutto da solo?

Penso che il vantaggio principale sia legato al fatto che un album solista mi dà totale liberta, ho la facoltà di decidere se rilasciare una canzone oppure se gettarla nel cestino. È un sentimento naturale voler decidere se tenere o meno un pezzo che ho scritto e in questo progetto è una cosa che posso finalmente fare. Dall'altro lato, un contro potrebbe essere il fatto che è un processo solitario, ma non sono convinto che sia necessariamente una brutta cosa. Però chiaramente suonare in una band ti dà tutto il supporto e l'energia necessari attraverso i tuoi compagni, cosa che ovviamente non hai in un progetto solista. Apprezzo moltissimo entrambi questi modi di fare musica.

Sarai presto in giro con Myles Kennedy, che hai anche supportato negli Alter Brisge con i tuoi Blues Pills. La tua evoluzione è molto simile a quella di Myles, ti sei forse ispirato anche a lui nella tua scelta? Come descriveresti il vostro rapporto?

Sicuramente è un'ispirazione. Ha fatto cose talmente grandi dal punto di vista musicale e continua a crescere incessantemente e anche cambiare. Quando abbiamo aperto per gli Alter Bridge, l'intera band e il suo staff sono stati molto gentili con noi. Abbiamo fatto solo un paio di show assieme ma ne ho un ricordo fantastico. E sono davvero impaziente per questo nuovo tour assieme.

Lo stile che proponi in "Hungry Ghost" mi riporta ai grandi classici del folk. Quali artisti ti hanno ispirato maggiormente in questo? Come ne sei venuto a contatto?

Van Morrison, John Martyn, Terry Reid, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills e Nash... li ho conosciuti tutti tramite dei miei amici, acquistando dischi o tramite internet.

Quali sono i tuoi album solisti preferiti tra quelli di artisti principalmente noti per aver preso parte ad una band?

Sicuramente "No Other" di Gene Clark. Poi Van Morrison un paio d'anni dopo aver suonato coi "Them" ha pubblicato "Astral Weeks", che è uno dei miei preferiti. Adoro anche "All Things Must Pass" di George Harrison.

Parlando di show dal vivo, quando ti vedremo da solista in Italia?

Farò un tour in Europa in apertura a Myles Kennedy, un po' di spettacoli nel Regno Unito, ma anche qualche data italiana. Suoneremo a Milano, Roma ed Udine. Ho anche un altro tour a settembre che sarà principalmente in Germania, ma spero assolutamente di organizzare qualche altra serata in Italia.

Ti senti pronto a gestire il palcoscenico tutto da solo?

Assolutamente. È molto bello. Ovviamente, tutto un altro tipo di emozione, ma assolutamente naturale visto che suono e canto pezzi che ho scritto interamente da solo. Mi piace anche portare qualche altro musicista con me di tanto in tanto, è qualcosa che porta una dinamica diversa allo spettacolo e sicuramente ci sarà da divertirsi.

Hi Dorian, welcome back to SpazioRock.it. How are you?

Thank you! I'm doing great!

Let's talk about "Hungry Ghost", how did you come up with the idea of a solo album? Are you satisfied with the result?

I started to write more folk songs a couple years ago but it's only half way through last year that I decided to focus more on it and release songs, play shows and so on. With Blues Pills this year is not too busy, we just have a bunch of shows so I had more time than usual to focus on a different musical project. I'm really satisfied with the result, the ep was recorded mostly live with one microphone and on tape. So I think it captures the pure performance of the songs without many overdubs or other studio tricks.

Would you like to explain the thematic content of this album?

Lyrically it's not the happiest release of all time. I get a lot of inspirations from unpleasant life events. Feelings of loss, longing, self destruction are quite recurring themes and I'm inspired by my own feelings and darkness and by what I see in other people. Some songs are about a direct experience of someone close to me or something I've witnessed and some are more vague describing a feeling and not a direct experience. I usually write lyrics that are somewhat not too direct so they can be interpreted differently by the listeners. They do have direct meaning to me though.

I think that solo albums have this special peculiarity of being more intimate and personal. What does this release represent to you?

I agree. This release is the most intimate and personal one I've ever put out or been part of. It's also the one I've been the most involved with so that's probably a big reason why it feels so personal. It feels like opening myself up musically to the world without hiding anything. And that's both really exciting and scary.
Writing such personal songs and playing them in front of people was quite a step to take and it took a little while but it's all been great so far.

In your opinion, how is this way of singing and playing acoustic contributing to this kind of intimacy?

I think it contributes quite a lot. You can't hide much when your playing an acoustic guitar and singing. Also songwriting in an acoustic guitar and nothing else has an impact on what it ends up sounding like. It feels more intimate as you can't hide behind effects or many musicians, or loud and heavy sound.

We aren't used to see you playing acoustic guitar with Blues Pills, how would you describe your relationship with this instrument? Do you think it’s easier or more challenging to play?

I really like playing acoustic guitar, it gets me really relaxed and you can do a lot with messing around open tunings and so on. It can be more challenging as it's not just pentatonic and licks based as the usual electric guitar playing. I love finger picking and it can be really challenging yet beautiful on more technical songs. It's a whole different technique for the right hand than playing with a pick and takes a bit of time to get used to.

What are the pros and cons in the process of recording a solo album?

I suppose the pros are that the solo project gives me total creative freedom, I make the decision if I want to release a song or if I choose to trash the idea. It's usually a natural feeling if I want to keep a song I wrote or not and I feel like only I can really decide on this project. Then the cons can be that it's more of a lonely experience sometimes which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But playing in a band gives you the support and energy from your band mates which you don't have with a solo project. I really enjoy both those aspects of music.

You'll be on tour with Myles Kennedy, who you also supported with Blues Pills for Alter Bridge. Myles has had the same evolution as you... have you possibly taken any inspiration from him in your choice? And what is your relationship with Myles?

He is an inspiration for sure, he's done so many great things musically and keeps on growing and changing. When we opened for Alter Bridge the whole band and crew was really nice to us. We only did a couple shows together but I have great memories and I'm really looking forward to this opening tour!

The style proposed in "Hungry Ghost" reminds me of Folk Rock classics. What are the artists that inspire you the most on these regards? How did you first discover them?

Van Morrison, John Martyn, Terry Reid, Neil Young, Crosby stills and Nash.. I discovered them either from friends of mine, and also online or buying records.

What are your favourite solo albums among the ones released by artists that are mainly famous for having been part of a band?

Gene Clark from the Byrds, "No Other" . Van Morrison a couple years after playing with Them made "Astral Weeks" which is one of my favorite records. Also I love George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass".

Talking about live shows. Is there any chance to see you play in Italy?

I have a European tour coming up opening for Myles Kennedy, quite a few U.K. shows but also some Italian ones. We will be playing Milano , Rome and Udine. I have another tour in September which mostly will be in Germany but I surely hope I will book some more Italian shows soon.

How do you feel about handling the stage by yourself?

It feels good, it's a different feeling of course. But it feels natural as I'm playing and singing songs I wrote entirely myself. I also like to bring musicians with me from time to time for the solo project, it's a lot of fun and brings in different dynamics to the show.
