Ciao Falk Maria e benvenuto per la prima volta su SpazioRock.it. La prima domanda è scontata ma per noi obbligatoria: siete pronti per lo SpazioRock.it Festival che si terrà il prossimo 24 Settembre al Live Club di Trezzo?

Si, certamente. È fantastico tornare in Italia. Sono due anni ormai che siamo in tour per l'album "Blessed & Possessed" e sarà grandioso celebrare la messa metal con i nostri fedeli italiani.

Condividerete il palco con Stratovarius, Rhapsody e molti altri guppi che hanno fatto la storia del genere. Cosa ne pensi di un festival basato sul power metal come questo?

Penso sia perfetto! (ride). È davvero uno dei migliori bill possibili per essere un festival Power Metal.

La prima volta che siete venuti in Italia fu nel 2005 con Gamma Ray e Nocturnal Rites, poi siete tornati nel 2012 al Metalfest con Blind Guardian e molti altri. Oggi i Powerwolf sono una band che dal vivo vale cento volte di più, avete un riscontro mediatico infinitamente superiore. Cos'è cambiato?

Moltissimo. Dal 2005 a oggi abbiamo pubblicato cinque album, a fine Luglio un DVD live e poi siamo stati tantissimo in tour. Adoriamo celebrare la nostra messa metal sul palco. E al pubblico piace.

C'è stata una svolta anche dal punto di vista discografico: "Blessed & Possessed" è di gran lunga il vostro miglior disco, c'è stata la svolta nel songwriting e nella produzione. Sei d'accordo?

Si, assolutamente. Anch'io reputo "Blessed & Possessed" il migliore. Ha quel certo feeling live. In pratica potremmo suonarne ogni pezzo sul palco, funzionerebbe. Una difficoltà che abbiamo dovuto superare è stata lasciare le aspettative fuori dalla sala prove. Più una band diventa grande, più deve fare i conti con la pressione e, sebbene ce la caviamo a separare l'aspetto del business da quello artistico, mentiremmo se dicessimo che, dopo il grande successo di "Preacher Of The Night", non risentivamo di una certa pressione. A dirla tutta ci sono voluti almeno un paio di mesi prima che risucissimo a scrivere nuove canzoni senza il fardello del grande sucesso dell'album precedente sulle nostre spalle. Abbiamo dovuto concentrarci su cosa significa davvero essere una band, a prescindere dal suo successo: un gruppo di buoni amici che scrivono musica insieme. Ed è quanto potete sentire su "Blessed & Possessed".

Vi siete mai posti il problema che una parte del pubblico venga ai vostri show più per la scenografia, i costumi e l'atmosfera generale piuttosto che per la qualità del vostro lavoro? Non siete preoccupati che queste maschere che impersonificate possano diminuire la vostra produzione?

No, prima vengono la musica e lo scrivere buoni album. Se le nostre fossero soltanto delle belle esibizioni i fan metal le repudierebbero! Ne sono sicuro. Ma amiamo interagire con il pubblico. Mi diverto e adoro quando il pubblico indossa il nostro stesso make up. È una simbiosi perfetta.

Quando avete iniziato con i Powerwolf, quali erano i vostri progetti futuri? Il vostro percorso musicale finora ha soddisfatto le vostre aspettative? C'è qualche altro obiettivo ambizioso che vi siete prefissi di raggiungere?

Non avevamo un vero e proprio progetto. L'unico piano era esibirci dal vivo e scrivere bei pezzi. Siamo veramente posseduti da quello che facciamo ed è fantastico che si riproponga sempre l'opportunità di farlo. Siamo davvero grati ai nostri fan e alla loro passione.

State già lavorando al suo successore di "Blessed & Possessed"? Puoi anticiparci qualcosa?

Non ancora. Non scriviamo canzoni durante i tour. Amiamo essere in tour e ci concentriamo al 100% soltanto su quello. Non siamo quel tipo di band che scrive canzoni nella backlounge del tourbus. Ma inizieremo questo autunno, subito dopo aver concluso il tour in Scandinavia. Finora non abbiamo deciso alcuna direzione musicale precisa. Il nostro approccio è sempre stato semplicemente quello di scrivere delle nuove grandi canzoni. Non pensiamo ad uno stile e non lo abbiamo mai fatto. Il nostro sound è quello che evolve naturalmente quando noi cinque suoniamo insieme. Sta nel modo di cantare di Attila, nel mio modo di suonare l'organo e nel come componiamo le nostre melodie - non abbiamo alcun piano su come dovrebbe essere il nostro sound adesso. Mi azzarderò pure ad affermare che è più onesto dire che non pianifichiamo coscientemente cosa fare. La musica è qualcosa di istintivo per me.

Da qualche giorno è uscito "The Metal Mass Live", un'operazione discografica importantissima che mostra i Powerwolf nella loro miglior veste, quella dal vivo! Ti va di parlarci del prodotto? La versione blu-ray è davvero impressionate!

Beh, era tempo di pubblicare un DVD. Ma volevamo che si trattasse di qualcosa che meritasse davvero, qualcosa che contentesse un messaggio. Del resto, dopo sei album, era il momento giusto... così, quando abbiamo ricevuto l'invito per essere gli headliner del Masters of Rock in Repubblica Ceca e del Summer Breeze Festival in Germania, decidemmo di registrare questi show per il DVD. Ma anche volevamo raccontarci ai nostri fans, condividere con loro la storia dei Powerwolf e delle scene davvero private dal backstage. Credo che il documentario sia formidabile, perfino per noi, per rivedere quanto è successo negli ultimi 12 anni. Ville ha fatto davvero un buon lavoro con questo DVD.

La vostra etichetta discografica, Napalm Records, crede tantissimo in voi e investe ingenti quantità di denaro per produrre un sacco di edizioni limitate dei vostri dischi. Per quanto tempo il fan metal sarà disposto a spendere 50 euro per una versione limitata del suo gruppo preferito?

Avete visto questa edizione, questo earbook? È davvero un gran bel libro con all'interno tutti i DVD, BluRay, CD audio e tantissime foto strepitose di discreta dimensione, come se fosse un vinile. Credo che 50 euro quindi non siano ecessivi per una release che tra l'altro è già quasi sold out. Parlando per me: amo le edizioni speciali e le acquisto sempre. È qualcosa di unico, qualcosa che merita. Vado davvero fiero di questa edizione. E i fan hanno sempre la scelta se acquistare questa o l'edizione normale.

I fan italiani non vedono l'ora del vostro show allo SpazioRock.it Festival, si aspettano "fuoco e fiamme": avete qualcosa di speciale in serbo per loro?

Se la svelassi non sarebbe più una sorpresa! (ride). Quanto posso già promettere è che sarà lo show più colossale che abbiamo mai fatto in Italia. Trasformeremo il palco in una chiesa e vi celebreremo la nostra santa messa Heavy Metal.

Abbiamo chiesto ad alcuni ragazzi che parteciperanno allo SpazioRock.it Festival di inviarci alcune domande da sottoporci, eccole:

Luca Moroni: che gruppi ascoltavate da piccoli?

Iron Maiden e The Almighty.

Federica Caruso: c'è una band a cui vi siete ispirati per diventare quello che siete oggi oppure ogni particolare (trucco, genere e testi delle canzoni) è frutto della vostra immaginazione?

Direi all'Heavy Metal in generale. Ma mi piacciono molto quelle band che hanno talento nell'intrattenere il pubblico: King Diamond, Kiss e Motley Crue. Fantastici.

Nicholas Bettinelli: cosa vi sarebbe piaciuto fare se non foste diventati musicisti professionisti?

Non c'è mai stato un piano B!

Andrea Pipponzi: Viste le tematiche prevalentemente religiose delle vostre canzoni, qual è il vostro orientamento religioso?

Il Metal è la nostra Religione e il nostro Credo. Noi descriviamo aspetti storici della storia della religione. Ma appunto è il Metal l'unica Religione e il Credo. Non si tratta soltanto di ascoltare della musica.

Hi Falk Maria and welcome to your first interview on SpazioRock.it. The first question, which I know sounds a little bit obvious but it is mandatory for us is: are you ready for the SpazioRock.it Festival scheduled on the 24th of September at the Live Club in Trezzo?

Yes, of course. It is great to be back in Italy. We have been touring since two years now for the "Blessed & Possessed" album and it feels great to celebrate the metal mass with the Italian believers.

You are going to share the stage with Stratovarius, Rhapsody and many other bands which have made the history of power metal. What is your opinion on a Festival focused on this musical genre?

Perfect! (laughs). That is really one of the best combination for a Power Metal festival.

Your first time in Italy was in 2005 with Gamma Ray and Nocturnal Rites, then you came back in 2012 at the Metalfest with Blind Guardian and many others. Nowadays Powerwolf are a band which, on stage, worths one hundred times more, you have an immensely superior media feedback. What has changed in the meantime?

A lot. Since 2005 we released five albums, at the end of July a live DVD and we toured a lot. And we love to celebrate our Metal Mass on stage. And the audience like it. That is great!

There has been a change also in your musical production: "Blessed & Possessed" is definitely your best album. Not only the production but also the songwriting has evolved. Do you agree?

Yes, I absolutely agree. "Blessed & Possessed" is also for me the best one. It has this certain live feeling. We could play almost every song on stage, it would work. A difficulty we had to overcome was to let expectations outside the rehearsal room. The bigger a band grows, the more pressure there is for sure, and even though we can divide business and being artists quite well, we would lie if we told we didn't feel any pressure after the great success of "Preacher Of The Night". It in fact took us a couple of months until we could start writing new songs without the burden of that mighty successful previous album on our shoulders. We had to really focus on what a band, no matter how successful or not, is: a bunch of good friends writing music together. And that you can hear on "Blessed & Possessed".

Have you ever considered that some of the people in your audience may come to your shows more for the setting, make-up and general atmosphere and not for the quality of your work? Aren't you concerned that all this character play of yours may diminish your production?

No, the first thing is the music and writing good albums. Only a show would be denied by the metal fans! I am sure. But we love to interact with the audience. I really enjoy that and love it, when the audience wear make up like we do. That is a perfect symbiosis.

When Powerwolf started, what were your future plans? Have your expectations been matched by your musical journey? Is there any other ambitious goal that you are still longing to achieve?

There was no certain plan. The only plan was, playing live and writing good songs. We are really possessed what we do and it is so fantastic that we get the chance to do it more and more. We are really thankful for our fans and their passion.

Are you already working on the sequel of "Blessed & Possessed"? Are you able to anticipate anything to us?

Not yet. We don't write songs when we are on tour. We love touring and we concentrate 100% on that. We are not such a kind of band, who writes songs in the backlounge of the nightliner. But we will start with it this autumn, right after the tour through Scandinavia. In fact we didn´t consciously decide any musical direction so far. Our approach has always been to simply write great new songs. We don´t think about the style and we never did. The way we sound is the sound that naturally evolves when the five of us play music together. It´s the way Attila sings, the way I am playing the church organ and the way we write melodies that define our sound - not any plans about how to sound now. I even go as far as saying it´s most honest if you don´t consciously plan what to do. Music is something intuitive to me.

"The Metal Mass Live" was released a few days ago. It is a very important recording operation because it shows Powerwolf in the situation that fits the band best: the live one! Why don't you tell us a little bit more about this product? The blu-ray version is really awesome!

Well, the time has really come to release a DVD. But we wanted to release something very worthy and we want to tell something. And after six albums, the time has really come... so when we get the invitation for headlining Masters of Rock in the Czeck Republic and the Summer Breeze Festival in Germany, we decided to record these shows for the DVD. But we also want to tell our fans, the history of Powerwolf and some really private backstage scenes. I think the documentary is so amazing, even for us, to see what happened in the last 12 year. Ville did a great job with this DVD.

Your recording label, Napalm Records, truly believes in you and it has been investing a huge amount of money to produce many limited editions of your records. How long a metal fan will be willing to spend 50 euros for a limited edition of his favourite band?

Have you seen this edition, this earbook? It is really a big book, with all DVDs, BluRay, Audio CD and a huge amount of great pics in a good size, like on vinyl. I think, 50 euro are not expensive for such a release and they are even almost sold out. I can speak for myself: I love special editions and buy them always. It is something unique, it is worthy. I am really proud of this edition. And the fans have always the choice between normal and special edition.

Your Italian fans can't wait for your show at the SpazioRock.it Festival. They are expecting something extraordinary: do you have any special surprise for them?

Than it wouldn't be a surprise anymore (laughs). What I can promise, that it will be the biggest show we have ever played in Italy. We will transform the stage into a church and celebrate the holy Heavy Metal Mass.

We asked to some fans of yours, those that will be present at the SpazioRock.it Festival, to send us some questions they wanted to ask you, here there are:

Luca Moroni: What bands did you use to listen to when you were teenagers?

That was Iron Maiden and The Almighty.

Federica Caruso: Is there a band that inspired you to become the musicians that you are today or each aspect of your band (make-up, genre and lyrics) comes from your imagination?

I would say Heavy Metal at all. But I really like bands, with a good entertainment. King Diamond, Kiss, Motley Crue. Awesome.

Nicholas Bettinelli: What were your plans if you hadn't succeeded as professional musicians?

I did not have a second plan.

Andrea Pipponzi: Given the predominantly religious subjects of your songs, may I ask you what is your religious belief?

Metal is Religion is our belief. We are describing historical aspects of religious history. But Metal is Religion is the credo. It is not only listen to music.
