Ciao Maja, per prima cosa ti diamo il benvenuto su SpazioRock. Come stai?

Grazie mille, sto bene!

Dopo tre anni dal vostro album di debutto, sta per uscire il vostro secondo lavoro, "Breathe In Colours". Un lasso di tempo in cui probabilmente vi sono successe molte cose. Ci riassumi un po' questo periodo e quando avete sentito l'esigenza di tornare in studio?

Subito dopo aver finito il primo [ride,ndr]. Okay no, per fortuna non dobbiamo ancora sentirci creativamente esausti. Anche dopo aver realizzato "Breathe In Colours", sentiamo ancora di avere ancora molto da dare e tante idee da sfruttare. Dopo l'uscita del nostro album di debutto, "Tied Down", siamo andati in tour per l'Europa con Lacuna Coil e Children of Bodom e abbiamo anche suonato in alcuni festival davvero fantastici. Dopo questo siamo tornati alla modalità di scrittura. Abbiamo avuto un sacco di nuove esperienze da cui attingere e trovato molti altri livelli del nostro suono che volevamo esplorare.

Gli argomenti trattati in questo disco sono legati allo stato della società attuale e alle sue contraddizioni, che ci spingono a nasconderci e vivere sempre più nel cyberspazio e nella tecnologia. Puoi spiegare l'idea e il concetto dietro l'album?

L'ispirazione iniziale per l'album è arrivata una sera, mentre stavamo guardando i notiziari e ci siamo resi conto di quanto i problemi che stiamo affrontando assomiglino a quelli del futuro distopico di cui parlavamo da bambini: il governo schiavo delle grandi aziende, le gravi questioni relative al cambiamento climatico e il contesto di paura creato dai media che ci costringe a spingerci sempre più lontano l'uno dall'altro. Il fatto che alcuni dei più grandi lavori cyberpunk di tutti i tempi come "Blade Runner" e "Akira" siano ambientati nel 2019 è stata una interessante coincidenza, ha rafforzato il nostro concetto principale e ha contribuito a modellare il suono più crudo ed elettronico dell'album.

"Breathe in Colours" è un titolo particolare e anche molto affascinante ed evocativo. E' vero che deriva da un episodio che ti è realmente accaduto?

Grazie! Sì, infatti, il titolo dell'album è nato da un'esperienza, che ho avuto da adolescente, quando ho iniziato a indossare tutti vestiti neri e un amica di mia madre mi ha suggerito di indossare più colori. Le ho detto che era solo una scelta estetica e lei ha risposto che andava bene "finché mi ricordassi di tenere i colori all'interno". A quel tempo pensavo che fosse la cosa più stupida che avessi mai sentito, ma, nonostante questo, le sue parole mi sono rimaste impresse e sono stata in grado di dare un senso a questa frase in una nuova prospettiva molto più tardi nella vita. Per questo album è un'affermazione che vuol dire che, anche se il mondo a volte sembra freddo e grigio, c'è ancora colore e gentilezza là fuori. Ma per vederlo, dobbiamo prima trovare i colori all'interno, per cambiare la nostra visione della vita.

Sono rimasto molto colpito dalla copertina dell'album, sicuramente qualcosa di diverso da ciò a cui siamo abituati. Uno dei significati che mi sono venuti in mente è che l'umanità deve prevalere sulla tecnologia. Qual è il suo vero significato? Come nel precedente album, una parte di te è in primo piano in copertina.

Sì, la prossima volta penseremo di fare uscire i gomiti! Grazie, penso che sia una grande interpretazione del significato, e c'è sicuramente parte della nostra verità. A prima vista la copertina appare piuttosto buia e cupa, ma in realtà è piena di colori. Proprio come il mondo reale, a volte dobbiamo solo guardare molto da vicino per vederlo davvero. Il codice binario dietro di me enuncia tutti i colori del mondo ed è allo stesso tempo un riferimento al mondo che diventa così digitale e alla gente che fugge nei loro computer per trovare la felicità invece di trovarla nel mondo reale. La copertina scura dell'album cerca anche di enfatizzare il contrasto del codice binario colorato dietro di me. Abbiamo pensato che fosse importante avere il contrasto di qualcosa di caldo, personale e umano con il mondo freddo, cinico e digitale.

 
Qual è la tua idea del mondo oggi? Quali sono gli aspetti più negativi della società attuale secondo te? Riesci ancora a percepire un sentimento di speranza?

Sicuramente, questo è ciò che significa "respirare a colori": la luce nell'oscurità. C'è ancora tanta bellezza da trovare e vivere nel mondo. Per molti dei problemi attuali, dobbiamo lavorare insieme invece di costruire muri e chiudere il resto del mondo. Dobbiamo prendere sul serio questioni come i cambiamenti climatici invece di etichettarli come "fake news" e sperare che spariscano o che qualcun altro li risolva.

È assolutamente vero che al giorno d'oggi la vita è molto più virtuale e il consenso e l'approvazione sono ricercati attraverso foto e messaggi sui social network. Perché pensi che stia succedendo? Abbiamo bisogno di più "like" che di veri abbracci?

È solo il modo più semplice per farlo. Fare in modo che degli estranei ti diano il "pollice in su" nel mondo virtuale, senza fare un vero sforzo, nascondendo il vero te stesso dietro un filtro. Penso che sia come assimilare delle calorie vuote, ti tengono sazio per un minuto ma ti lasciano morire di fame in maniera reale poco dopo.

Tu e Mikkel siete il cuore e il nucleo della band, non solo a livello musicale, ma vi occupate anche della gestione del management. Ti piace questo aspetto del tuo lavoro? Pensi di portare avanti questo schema, o qualcosa cambierà a causa dell'aumento del successo e degli impegni?

Si tratta di trovare le persone giuste con cui lavorare. Non è un nostro obiettivo essere le uniche due persone a fare tutto da soli, tutto si riduce a trovare persone con un'etica lavorativa simile, che sono più bravi di te nel loro campo specifico. Saremmo più che felici di concentrarci di più sul lato creativo della band e lavorare con un management che è interessato a spingere ulteriormente la band nella carriera come lo vogliamo noi, ma le persone valide non sono così facili da trovare.

L'album sembra molto maturo e migliorato da nuovi elementi. Penso ad esempio "Rewind", che presenta un'armonia perfetta di suono moderno, aggressività e melodia, al sound pesante di "Fight!" o alla dolce malinconia di "Is it Gone?". Allo stesso tempo, tuttavia, possiamo ancora percepire la freschezza e l'immediatezza del vostro primo album. Sei d'accordo con me se dico che quell'esperienza vi ha aiutato molto nel trovare questo tipo di equilibrio?

La musica si è decisamente sviluppata, ma direi che siamo molto riconoscibili per gli ascoltatori a cui è piaciuto il primo album. "Tied Down" era un album molto introspettivo su una singola persona che stava attraversando un cambiamento mentre su "Breathe In Colors", abbiamo spostato la nostra attenzione e abbiamo deciso di dare un'occhiata più estroversa al mondo, che ha decisamente cambiato il suono e l'atmosfera dell'album. Su "Tied Down", il protagonista lotta con sentimenti di inutilità e di insicurezza e su "Breathe In Colours" continua il suo viaggio e si evolve. I testi qui sono incentrati sulle guerre interiori e anche esteriori, ma, più che immergersi nella tristezza e nell'essere una vittima, sono focalizzati nel trovare la forza interiore e nel superare le difficoltà con cui il mondo ti presenta.

Essere la cantante di una band significa ovviamente essere sottoposti a una grande visibilità, e spesso la band viene identificata con la tua immagine. Come affronti questo aspetto della tua carriera?

Immagino che sia il territorio di chiunque sia frontwoman (o frontman) di qualsiasi band. Gli occhi delle persone si rivolgono automaticamente a te come rappresentante o "volto" della band. Fortunatamente la maggior parte di queste cose mi viene naturale e quindi riesco a farcela molto bene. Non bramo tutta quell'attenzione, ma mi sento a mio agio.

Alcuni anni fa avete affrontato un tour con i Lacuna Coil e successivamente con i Children Of Bodom. Questo è stato molto importante per voi e vi ha dato una notevole visibilità. Com'è stata quell'esperienza per te? Hai qualche ricordo speciale?

Sono stati tour incredibili, abbiamo anche avuto modo di visitare molti Paesi e città europee in cui non eravamo mai stati e abbiamo incontrato nuovi e vecchi fan, con alcuni dei quali eravamo in contatto da anni online. Il tour con i Lacuna Coil è stato il primo grande tour che abbiamo fatto e ho potuto cantare un duetto con Cristina e co. su "Enjoy The Silence". È stata un'esperienza davvero unica per me, che non dimenticherò.

Hi Maja, First of all welcome to SpazioRock. How are you?

Thank you so much, I'm good! I've been deep in our next music video, which will be out together with the release of the album on Friday March 29!

It's been three years since your debut record was released. I guess a lot of things happened since then. Can you tell us about this period and when you started to feel the need to enter the studio again?

Right after we finished the first one! Haha okay no, but luckily we have yet to feel creatively exhausted. Even after fishing up Breathe In Colours, we still feel like we have so much more to give and ideas to tap into. After the release of our debut album, Tied Down, we went on some big European tours with Lacuna Coil as well as Children of Bodom and got to play some really awesome festivals as well. After that we went back into writing mode and had a lot of new experiences to draw from and so many more layers of our sound, we wanted to explore.

The topics you deal with in this record are related to the state of the current society and its contradictions, which push us to increasingly hide and live in the cyberspace and technology. Can you explain the idea and the concept behind the album?

The initial inspiration for the album came one evening, when we were watching the news and realised just how much the problems we are facing right now resemble those of the dystopian futures, we read about as kids: The government in the pocket of big companies, the serious issues concerning climate change and the media preaching fear and driving us further away from one another. The fact that some of the biggest cyberpunk works of all time, Blade Runner and Akira, are set in 2019 was a fun addition to our main concept and helped shape the album's more raw and electronic sound.

"Breathe in Colours" is a fascinating and evocative title. Is it true that it comes from an event that actually happened to you?

Thank you! Yes indeed, the album title was born from an experience, I had as a young teenager, where I started wearing all black and a friend of my mother's suggested that I wear more colours. I told her that it's just an aesthetic preference and she replied that it was okay "as long as I remembered to keep the colours on the inside". At that time I thought, it was the stupidest thing, I'd ever heard, but despite thinking that, her words stuck with me and I was able to have it make sense in a new way much later in life. For this album it's an affirmation that even though the world sometimes seems cold and grey, there is still colour and kindness out there, but in order to see it, we first have to find the colours on the inside to change our outlook on life.

I was very impressed by the album cover, definitely something different from what we are used to. One of the meanings that came to my mind is that mankind has to prevail over technology. What is its true meaning? As in the previous album, a part of you is in the foreground on the cover.

Yes, next time we plan on going with elbows! Thank you, I think that's a great interpretation of it, and there's definitely part of our truth in that too. At first glance the cover art appears quite dark and gloomy, but in reality it's bursting with colour. Just like the real world - sometimes we just have to look really closely to actually see it. The binary code behind me spells out all the colours in the world and is at the same time a reference to the world becoming so digital and people escaping into their computers to find happiness instead of finding it in the real world. The sombre looking album cover is also to really emphasize the contrast of the colourful binary code behind me. We thought it was important to have the contrast of something warm, personal and human to the cold, cynical and digital world.

What is your idea of the world today? What are the most negative aspects of the current society according to you? Can you still feel hope?

Definitely, that's what "breathing in colours" is all about: the light in the darkness. There's still so much beauty to find and experience in the world. For a lot of the current issues, we need to work together instead of building up walls and shutting off to the rest of the world. We need to take issues like climate change seriously instead of just labeling them as "fake news" and hoping they go away or that someone else fixes them.

It is absolutely true that nowadays life is much more virtual, and consensus and approval are sought through photos and messages on social networks. Why do you think this is happening? Do we need more "like" than real hugs?

It's just the easy way to do it. Getting strangers to give you a thumbs up in the virtual world, without making a real effort, while hiding the real you behind some filter. I think likes a like empty calories - they keep you full for a minute but leaves you starving for something real shortly after.

You and Mikkel are the heart and the core of the band, not only on a musical level, but you also take care of the management. Do you like this aspect of your work? Do you think you'll carry on with this scheme, or something will change due to an increase in success and commitments?

It's all about finding the right people to work with. It's not a goal of ours to be the only two people doing everything ourselves - it all comes down to finding people with a similar work ethic, who're stronger than you in their specific field. We'd be more than happy to focus more on the creative side of the band and work with management, who are as interested in pushing the band further in their career as we are, but good people are just not that easy to come by.

The album sounds very mature and improved by new elements. I think that for example "Rewind" presents a perfect harmony of modern sound, aggressiveness and melody, same with the heavy sound of "Fight!" or the sweet melancholy of "Is it Gone?". At the same, however, we can still perceive the freshness and immediacy of your first album. Do you agree with me if I say that experience helped you a lot in finding this kind of balance?

The music has definitely developed, but I'd still say we're very recognizable for listeners, who liked the first album. Tied Down was a very introspective album about a single person going through a change whereas on "Breathe In Colours", we shifted our focus and decided to take a more extrospective look out on the world, which has definitely changed the sound and vibe of the album. On "Tied Down", the protagonist struggles with feelings of worthlessness and self doubt and on "Breathe In Colours", she continues her journey and evolves. The lyrical themes here are centered around inner as well as outer wars, but more than just wallowing in sadness and being a victim, they're focused on finding the strength within, and overcoming the struggles the world presents you with.

Being the singer in a band obviously means being subjected to great visibility, and often the band is identified with your image. How do you cope with this aspect of your career?

I guess it comes with the territory of being a front woman (or man) of any band. People's eyes automatically go straight to you as a representative or "face" of the band. Luckily most of these things come naturally to me and therefore I cope very well with it. I don't crave all that attention, but I'm comfortable with it.

A few years ago you toured with Lacuna Coil and later with Children Of Bodom. This was very important for you and gave you considerable visibility. How was that experience like for you? Do you have any special memories?

These were some amazing tours, and best of all, we got to visit so many European countries and cities we had never been to, and got to meet old as well as new fans, some of which we had been talking with for years online. The LC tour was the first big tour we were on and I got to sing a duet with Cristina and co. for "Enjoy the Silence", which was a very unique experience for me, that I won't forget.
