Beh, questa è una bella domanda. Direi ancora qui, a creare la mia musica, ancora in viaggio, padrone della mia esistenza, a divertirmi. Proprio per questo continuo a fare progetti in tal senso.

Durante la tua adolescenza hai incontrato John Norum e hai detto più di una volta che sapevi già allora che avresti finito per suonare con lui. In effetti è successo tutto molto in fretta, dalla nascita dei 'Force' in poi, e la leggenda ha avuto inzio. Qual era il primo sogno che avevate come band e qual è quello che dovete ancora realizzare?

Volevamo girare il mondo naturalmente. Non solo l'Europa, ma l'America, questo è stato il nostro primo sogno: fare il giro del mondo. Siamo molto fortunati perché i nostri sogni si sono esauditi, ma continuiamo a lavorare davvero sodo... e mi piace l'idea che là fuori ci siano ancora un sacco di band più giovani che vanno alla grande e trasmettono una straordinaria energia. Per esempio io adoro i Rival Sons! Per quanto riguarda noi... i nostri sogni e le nostre aspettative non sono mai cambiate.

Ascoltando i vostri album è evidente che il processo di scrittura è cambiato parecchio. So che eri solito scrivere la maggior parte delle canzoni e ora c'è una maggiore collaborazione nel processo creativo, state scavando più a fondo con un'attitudine sperimentale che non tutti i vecchi fan sembrano condividere. Come descriveresti 'Walk The Earth', più come un viaggio fuori dai vostri confini o come la spontanea evoluzione della strada già percorsa?

È una vera e propria progressione. L'intero concetto si riassume in una sorta di vagabondaggio, e non lo abbiamo affatto pianificato, è una naturale conseguenza. Non siamo soliti fare progetti specifici, in realtà accade sempre tutto abbastanza velocemente e in questa occasione non siamo andati molto lontano dal tracciato.

In ogni singola intervista rispondi alle domande su "The Final Countdown". Deve essere un po' estenuante dopo tutti questi anni, ma sarai d'accordo con me che quel pezzo ha lasciato un segno così profondo che ogni singola persona su questo pianeta può riconoscerlo dalle prime 4 note. Ti sei mai chiesto perché ha colpito così tante persone in questo modo? Se sì, quale è stata la risposta?

Le canzoni connettono le persone, fluiscono e hanno un valore emotivo. Alcune di queste fanno breccia nei cuori della gente e nelle loro menti e "The Final Countdown" ha sicuramente queste caratteristiche. Se lavori duro con una band, e scrivi molto, probabilmente prima o poi questo tipo di canzoni verranno alla luce.

Hai presente quando i musicisti si ritrovano in un negozio di musica e la prima cosa che suonano su un nuovo strumento sono alcune note molto popolari delle canzoni più famose del passato? Mi è capitato spesso di sentir suonare "The Final Countdown" dai tastieristi e mi chiedevo: cosa suonerà o canterà Joey Tempest quando prova un nuovo microfono / strumento per la prima volta?

Oh, non lo so (ndr ride)... quando ero più giovane sicuramente "Smoke on the Water" ma poi ho cominciato a usare le mie canzoni. Una cosa che faccio, soprattutto se stavo lavorando a una canzone prima di uscire di casa e mi ritrovo in un negozio di musica, è continuare a lavorarci anche vagabondando con indosso le cuffie mentre provo i vari strumenti!

Come band, gli Europe hanno trascorso molti decenni insieme, affrontando il famigerato music business. C'è una cosa che ti sarebbe piaciuto sapere ai tuoi esordi e che adesso hai imparato fin troppo bene? Qualcosa che diresti immediatamente ai tuoi figli se dovessero scegliere di intraprendere una carriera musicale?

Abbi il controllo della tua musica. Abbi il controllo della tua vita. Darei quel consiglio a qualsiasi giovane band. Ma sai com'è... si vive, si impara...

Ho partecipato a uno vostro concerto all'Alcatraz di Milano non molto tempo fa. In quell'occasione avete suonato l'intero album "The Final Countdown". Ricordo vividamente gli enormi ledwall che illuminavano il palco con decine di foto dei vostri più cari fan da tutto il mondo come una carrellata di bei ricordi. Cosa significano per voi i vostri fan?

All'inizio non te ne rendi conto, poi cominci a realizzare che le persone ti seguono ovunque e ti sostengono, alcune di loro per moltissimo tempo! Sono veri e propri sostenitori leali, ed è una bellissima esperienza da vivere.

Ho davvero amato moltissimo l'album "Last Look at Eden" e nello specifico "No Stone Unturned" che recitava: "I, I walked this earth, until I stagger and fall to my knees"... "Leave no stone unturned, Believe and you shall arrive". Questa canzone ha un impatto molto potente, epico, e probabilmente ha ispirato molte persone a farsi forza, tenere duro. Questo è un messaggio che ricorre spesso nella vostra musica. Qual è il tuo pezzo preferito quando hai bisogno di coraggio o di energia?

Quella canzone per esempio. E' un pezzo molto bello, lo adoro. Trasmette un messaggio di speranza, e questo è un concetto che ricorre spesso nei nostri pezzi.

Siete attualmente in tour tra Norvegia, Irlanda, Inghilterra, Francia e Spagna e immagino che nel 2019 ci saranno probabilmente altre date... Possiamo aspettarci che torniate di nuovo in studio nel 2020?

Sì, faremo un tour anche l'anno prossimo, e poi ci metteremo al lavoro su nuove idee.

Suonerete molto presto a Bologna il 2 ottobre, ti piacerebbe lasciare un messaggio ai tuoi fan italiani?

Amiamo così tanto l'Italia che ci teniamo a tornare in ogni singolo tour, la connessione che abbiamo con l'Italia è incredibile, i fan sono fantastici, quindi non vediamo l'ora di rivederli!

Well that's a good question, well I am still here, creating my music, still travelling, I own my life, I enjoy it, planning ahead. 

Through your early teenage years you met John Norum and you told more than once you kind of knew you would end up playing together. As a matter of fact you soon started ‘Force' and that's how it all began. Which is the very first dream you used to have as a band and which is the next one?

We wanted to tour the wolrd of course. Not only Europe but America, that was our first dream, to tour the world. Now we're lucky cause our dreams are fullfilled, we work really hard... and as far as I can see there are a lot of younger bands doing great out there, with a lot of energy like Rival Sons for instance.... we still have the same attitude the same dreams.

Listening to your albums it's self evident that the writing process changed quite a lot. I know you used to write most of the songs and now you do more stuff together digging deeper with an experimental attitude that not all of your old fans seems to get. How would you describe ‘Walk The Earth', more like a trip out of the boundaries or like a simple progression of the road already traveled?

It is progression. The whole concept turns out the idea of being a vagabond, and I can tell you we don't plan too much. It's a progression for sure but we never plan it, actually it happens quite fast and in this occasion we didn't go to far from our path.

In every single interview you answer questions about ‘The Final Countdown'. Must be a bit exhausting after all these years, but you will agree with me that you left a mark so deep every single person on this planet can recognize your song by the very first 4 notes. Have you ever asked yourself why did it strike so many people in such a way? If so, what was the answer?

Songs connect people, they flow and they have an emotional value. Some of them have a way in the hearts and the minds and "The Final Countdown" surely has these features. If you work hard with a band and you write a lot and you learn you will get there.

You know when musicians find themselves at some music shop the first thing they play on a new instrument is some very popular notes from the most famous songs from the past. I've heard The Final Countdown played by keyboards players and I was wondering: what Joey Tempest play or sing when trying a new microphone/instrument for the first time?

Oh I don't know (laugh, Ed.)... when I was young it would be "Smoke on The Water" and after that I would go to my own stuff... If I was working on a song and I went to a music shop I would continue working on the same song, running around with headphones on and playing the intruments...

As a band, Europe spent more than forty years together facing the infamous music business. Is there a thing you really wish you knew back in the early days that you do know now? Something you would immediately tell your children if they were to choose a music career?

Own your own music. Own your life. I would give that advice to any young band, but you live and you learn...

I attended a show in Milan a couple of years ago, it was at the Alcatraz club and you played the whole "The Final Countdown" album. I vividly remember the huge ledwalls lighting the stage with tons of pictures of your dearest fans around the world like a slideshow of beautiful memories. What does a real fan mean to a band like Europe?

You don't know that from the beginning. And then you go anywhere and they follow you. There are people who have been there for us for many many years, they are loyal and it's a great connection to experience.

I really loved the album "Last Look at Eden" from your "modern era", and the first line of "No Stone Unturned " went like this "I, I walked this earth, until I stagger and fall to my knees" and "Leave no stone unturned, Believe and you shall arrive". This song has a very powerful and epic attitude, and probably inspired many people to stay strong. This is a message you often deliver in your music. Which is your "go to song" when you need courage or energy?

That song is a very good song, I like that song. It delivers a message of hope, Europe has that a lot, especially in the lyrics.  

You are currently on tour playing in Norway, Ireland, England, France and Spain and I guess in 2019 there will probably be some more touring... Can we expect Europe to go back in the studio again in 2020?

Yes, we're gonna tour next year as well, and then get to new ideas.

You're going to play in Bologna very soon, would you like to leave a message for your Italian fans?

We love Italy we want to come back in every single tour, the connection we have with Italy is amazing, the fans are amazing, so we really can't wait!
