Salve Myles, benvenuto su SpazioRock e congratulazioni per la pubblicazione di "Living The Dream"! Questo progetto è nato nel 2010 come un'avventura solista di Slash e negli anni è diventata una vera e propria band. Cosa significa quest'esperienza per te come artista?

È stato bello vedere come il tutto si è evoluto in questo periodo. Le sensazioni e le vibrazioni presenti nel progetto erano chiare fin dal principio, ma anni di tour e di album insieme hanno contribuito a migliorare sempre di più la chimica tra tutti i membri. Sembra allo stesso tempo una band, ma anche un insieme di diverse entità musicali e questo ci aiuta molto ad essere orgogliosi di quello che facciamo come gruppo.

Qual è la cosa che preferisci del lavorare con Slash? Per quale motivo?

Ha un'etica del lavoro incredibile. Vive per suonare e prende molto seriamente tutto quello che fa. Ovviamente è un grande chitarrista, ma il suo lavoro per rimanere sempre al top: è un'autentica fonte di ispirazione.

E invece cosa credi che piaccia a Slash riguardo il lavorare con te?

Questa è una domanda difficile. Forse mi vede come qualcuno che ha il suo stesso approccio verso la vita. Il mio motto è "Non prenderti troppo seriamente, ma prendi seriamente il tuo lavoro". Abbiamo decisamente un'etica del lavoro simile.

Parlando delle canzoni dell'album, trovo che "The Great Pretender" sia quella in cui l'equilibrio tra la tua voce e la chitarra di Slash sia al suo massimo. Come avete raggiunto un risultato simile?

Grazie! La prima volta che gli ho sentito suonare quella melodia mi sono subito accorto che aveva qualcosa di speciale. Proprio per questo, non volevo che la mia voce si mettesse in mezzo. Quello che volevo era semplicemente raccontare una storia attraverso le parole e non intralciare la melodia, in modo che la chitarra di Slash potesse splendere.

Ovviamente queste canzoni sembrano perfette per essere suonate dal vivo. A marzo suonerete anche in Italia e lo show è andato immediatamente sold out. Ti ricordi il tuo primo concerto sold out? Cosa puoi raccontarci a riguardo?

Fantastico! Non vediamo l'ora di tornare! I miei primi ricordi di un concerto sold out risalgono a molti anni fa, precisamente a Spokane (Washington), dove sono cresciuto. Era in un locale con la mia prima band, i Citizen Swing. Anche se erano solo 500 persone, è stato fantastico sapere che eravamo riusciti a riempirlo. Tutte le volte che suoni da qualche parte e capisci che la gente vuole venire a vedere e sentire quello che fai, tutto questo ti dà molta convinzione del fatto che sei sulla giusta strada.

Negli ultimi dieci anno hai lavorato a molti progetti senza mai prenderti una pausa. C'è stato un momento in cui ti sei detto: "Ora basta"?

Anche se amo avere l'opportunità di fare musica e provare a fare del mio meglio ogni volta che registro un album o vado sul palco, mi è capitato di pensare che una piccola pausa potrebbe giovare. Non voglio rischiare di bruciarmi. Negli ultimi dieci anni ho avuto moltissimo da fare, ma fermarmi qualche mese potrebbe essere una buona scelta anche per la mia anima. Vedremo con il tempo.

Una delle cose che ammiro più di te come cantante è il fatto che, attraverso gli anni, la tua voce è sempre rimasta al top, senza nessun calo. Secondo te chi è il miglior cantante di tutti i tempi? Perché?

Grazie mille! Ti assicuro che a volte, quando la voce si affatica o mi ammalo, diventa tutto difficile. Il trucco è prendersi sempre cura di se stessi in modo che questi momenti siano pochi e comunque molto distanziati tra di loro. Nessuno è perfetto, ci sono tantissime variabili quando sei in tour. Tutto quello che puoi fare è rimanere positivo e provare a restare in salute. Per quanto riguarda il miglior cantante mai esistito... È quasi impossibile rispondere. Uno dei miei preferiti sarà sempre Jeff Buckley. Il fuoco e la passione delle sue performance sono davvero commoventi. Era favoloso.

Durante la tua carriera hai potuto suonare su grandi palchi insieme a musicisti di tutto rispetto e, come hai detto durante lo show degli Alter Bridge a Wembley, sei riuscito a realizzare i tuoi sogni. Cosa diresti ora al giovane Myles che ha appena comprato la sua prima chitarra?

Gli direi di smetterla di preoccuparsi di continuare a lavorare duramente per sviluppare il suo percorso artistico. E di considerare una famosa frase presente nel film "Field Of Dreams" [L'Uomo Dei Sogni, ndr]: "Se lo costruisci, si realizzerà".

Puoi anticiparci qualcosa riguardo i tuoi piani futuri?

Il prossimo anno sarò ancora in tour con Slash e i Conspirators. In invece primavera inizieremo a lavorare al prossimo album degli Alter Bridge. Il 2019 sarà pieno di impegni.

Grazie mille a tutte le persone a cui, attraverso le orecchie, riesco ad arrivare al cuore. Sono davvero grato di questo. Ci vediamo presto!

This project started in 2010 as a Slash solo venture and, through the years, it has become a real band. What does it mean to yourself, as an artist?

It's been nice to see how this has evolved over the decade. The vibe between all of has was evident in the very beginning, but years of touring and making records together has solidified the unique chemistry of SMKC. Feeling like it's a band versus a revolving door of different musical entities helps everyone take a certain amount of pride in what we do collectively.

What's the thing you prefer about working with Slash and why?

He has an incredible work ethic. He lives to play and he takes what he does very seriously. Obviously, he is a brilliant guitarist, but his drive to stay at the top of his game is inspiring.

And what is the thing you would say Slash prefer about working with yourself?

That's a tough one. Maybe he sees me as someone who has a similar approach to life. My motto is "don't take yourself too seriously but take your work seriously." We definitely have a similar work ethic.

I personally find "The Great Pretender" the track where the balance between your voice and Slash is at its best. How did you manage to achieve such a result?

Thank you. When I first heard him play that guitar melody I knew it was special. With that said, I didn't want my vocal to get in the way. My goal was simply to tell a story with the lyric and stay out of the way melodically so Slash could shine.

Obviously these songs look perfect for a live show and in March you will also play in Italy. The show has just gone sold out. Do you remember your first sold out gig? What can you tell us about it?

That's great to hear! We are definitely excited to return. My first recollection of a sold out gig was a long time ago in my hometown of Spokane Washington. It was with my band Citizen Swing in a club. Even though it was only around 500 people, it was still cool to know we filled the room to capacity. Anytime you play somewhere and it feels like there is a demand for what you do, it gives you confidence that you are on the right path.

In the last ten years you've worked on a lot of projects, without taking any break. Is there any moment in time when you said to yourself: "This is too much"?

Even though I love having the opportunity to make music and always try to do my best every time I make a record or walk on stage, it's certainly crossed my mind that a little break might be nice. I don't want to burn out. I've had an incredible run over the last decade but powering down for a few months or so might be good for my soul. Time will tell I guess.

One of the thing that I admire the most about you as a singer is the fact that, through the years, your voice is always at the top. Who is the best singer of all times in your opinion? Why?

Thank you very much. I can assure you there are some nights where my voice might get fatigued or I've been sick where it's more of a struggle. The trick is to take care of yourself so those moments are few and far between. No one is perfect because there are so many variables when you are on the road. All you can do is stay positive and try and stay healthy. As far as the best singer of all time... that's almost impossible to answer. One of my favorites will always be Jeff Buckley. The fire and passion of his vocal performances move me so much. He was amazing.

During your career you played on many big stages with great musicians and, as you said during the Alter Bridge show at Wembley, you realized one of your dreams. What would you say now to the young Myles on the day he bought his first guitar?

I would tell young Myles to stop worrying and continue to work hard at developing his craft. There is a famous line from a movie called Field Of Dreams I would tell him to pay close attention to...."If you build it they will come."

What can you anticipate regarding your future plans?

I'll be on tour with SMKC well into next year. There are also plans for starting the next Alter Bridge record next spring. 2019 is going to be very busy to say the least.
