Ciao ragazzi e benvenuti su SpazioRock.it. È un grande piacere conoscervi meglio. Perché non spiegate ai nostri lettori come vivete il fatto di essere al numero #2 della classifica degli album più venduti in Irlanda, tra Ed Sheeran e Shania Twain?

È incredibile. Il nostro album d'esordio "OK" è uscito lo stesso giorno di quelli di Shania Twain, Wolf Alice, Miley Cyrus e altri grandi artisti e siamo arrivati al numero #2 della classifica degli album più venduti. È davvero una sensazione magnifica per una giovane rock band irlandese riuscire a fare una cosa del genere. I ringraziamenti vanno ai nostri fan per tutto il sostegno dimostrato.

Il vostro album di esordio è stato pubblicato il 29 settembre scorso. "OK" è un titolo super sintetico! Qual è il significato dell'espressione in questo caso?

Sono le iniziali della nostra band! OtherKin... per un paio d'anni abbiamo sempre abbreviato il nome in questo modo e ci sembrava un titolo perfetto ed è anche breve e conciso, come le canzoni del disco.

Sono, poi, pazzamente innamorata della copertina. Appartiene a qualcuno di voi quel tatuaggio?

La mano che appare sulla cover è di Lukes (il nostro cantante) e anche il nostro batterista ha lo stesso tatuaggio insieme ad un altro con scritto "Bad Advice", fatti in un salone di Dublino. È stato un giorno divertente quello.

E come gestite il processo creativo? Siamo curiosi di scoprire di più sul vostro modo di scrivere canzoni...

Tutti e quattro scriviamo canzoni. Può succedere che uno di noi arrivi con un'idea scritta e tutti ci mettiamo al lavoro su quella o la modifichiamo finché non siamo soddisfatti. Per questo album abbiamo composto la maggior parte delle canzoni in una stanza, insieme, bevendo qualche birra e semplicemente osservando che cosa veniva fuori. Molti brani del disco sono stati scritti nella campagna irlandese a tarda notte.

Da chi o da che cosa traete ispirazione?

I Clash, i Blur, i Queens Of The Stone Age e i Ramones sono le band che ci hanno influenzato maggiormente. La nostra intenzione è quella di scrivere canzoni rock cariche di adrenalina con lunghi ritornelli e questi gruppi sono i migliori da prendere come esempio perché riescono a fare ciò in un modo unico.

Al primo ascolto, la sonorità tra garage-rock, grunge pop e pop punk mi ha fatto volare per un attimo in California! E invece siete irlandesi, di Dublino. Quanto c'è di Irlanda nella vostra musica?

L'Irlanda a livello musicale è molto varia. Oggi, abbiamo artisti veramente fantastici ma si sta sviluppando anche una scena rock. Ci sono grandissime rock band provenienti da Dublino, basti pensare ai Thin Lizzy o agli U2. Siamo orgogliosi delle nostre origini e crescere a Dublino ha influenzato incredibilmente il nostro sound.

Pubblicare un album significa poi partire per un tour promozionale. Ho dato un'occhiata alle date in programma e il vostro calendario è pienissimo! Come vivete questo aspetto della vostra carriera?

Amiamo viaggiare! Che cosa c'è di più divertente di visitare il mondo insieme ai tuoi migliori amici? È bello anche incontrare i fan degli Otherkin in paesi in cui non siamo mai stati prima. Speriamo che duri a lungo tutto ciò.

Per quanto riguarda le performance live? Come vi sentite quando salite sul palco? Quando avete realizzato di essere bravi in questo?

La cosa che amiamo di più è suonare live e non c'è niente che scambieremmo per uno show di quelli sudati e chiassosi. Ci siamo accorti presto che riuscivamo a creare uno spettacolo per le persone. È qualcosa che continuiamo a migliorare di volta in volta, facendo in modo che la serata diventi indimenticabile per i nostri fan.

Il 27 maggio scorso avete aperto il concerto dei Guns ‘n Roses a Slane Castle. Deve essere stato grandioso. Raccontateci qualcosa di quella data così speciale...

È stato quasi assurdo suonare davanti a più di 20.000 persone in una delle location più famose al mondo. Il nostro cantante Luke è di Slane, quindi ha suonato a casa sua. Che spettacolo vedere così tante persone venire lì per l'opening act e cantare insieme a noi sotto la pioggia, nonostante fossero le tre di pomeriggio!

Parliamo invece dell'Italia. Suonerete al Legend Club di Milano il 25 novembre. Che cosa vi aspettate da questo live?

Un nostro caro amico si è traferito a Milano di recente (Ciao Harry!) e ci ha detto che è fantastico lì. Non vediamo l'ora di esibirci per la prima volta come headliner a Milano. Abbiamo sentito dire che gli italiani amano la musica rock, dunque renderemo il nostro live una festa all'altezza delle attese e voi ragazzi dovete partecipare!

Hello guys and welcome to SpazioRock.it. It is a real pleasure to get to know you better. Why don't you explain to our readers how did you manage to charted above Ed Sheeran and Shania Twain at no.2 in the Irish album charts?

It was actually crazy, we released our debut album 'OK' the same day as Shania Twain, Wolf Alice, Miley Cyrus and a few others and managed to chart at #2 in the album charts. It was a really amazing feeling for a young Irish rock band to do something like this, all thanks to our fans for getting behind it.

Your debut album was released on September the 29th. "OK" is a very concise title! What is the meaning of the expression in this specific case?

It's the initials to our band! OtherKin... but it has been used to abbreviate our band name for a couple of years and we just felt it was the perfect as it's short and concise just like the songs on the album.

I'm in love with the cover of your album. Does the tattooed wrist belong to any of you?

The hand in the picture is Luke's (our singer), our drummer Rob also got it tattood for the album, along with a 'Bad Advice' tattoo all done in a living room in Dublin. That was a fun day.

And how do you deal with your creative process? We are definitely interested in discovering more about your songwriting...

All four of us are song writers! Sometimes one of us might come in with an idea written, and we all write around it or change it until it's right. For this album we mostly wrote the songs in a room together, drinking some beers and just seeing what came out. A lot of the songs on the album were written in the Irish countryside at very late hours in the night.

Who or what does inspire you the most?

Bands like The Clash, Blur, Queens Of The Stone Age and The Ramones were some of the big influences for us. We wanted to write energetic rock songs with big choruses and these bands were some of the best at doing that in their own unique ways.

When I first listened to the album, the garage-rock, grunge pop or pop punk sound brought me to California, rather than to Ireland! How much did your Irish roots have influenced your music?

Ireland is a very diverse country for music, we've some truly amazing artists at the moment but always had a good rock scene growing up. Then you can look at bands like Thin Lizzy and U2 to see that some of the greatest guitar bands came from Dublin also. We're proud of where we're from, and growing up in Dublin definitely influenced our sound.

Releasing an album means also being very busy with a promotional tour and your schedule it is quite something... How do you deal with this aspect of your career?

We love being out on the road! It's a load of fun getting to travel all around the world with your best friends. It's also nice meeting Otherkin fans in countries you've never even been to before, long may it continue.

And what about performing on stage? How do you feel about it? When did you first realize it was something you were so into it?

Performing live is our favourite thing to do, we love nothing better than a sweaty and rowdy show. We realised very early on that we were good at creating a live experience for people, it's something we've continued improving upon, making sure our fans have a night they won't forget.

On May the 27th you opened for Guns ‘n Roses at Slane Castle. It must have been awesome. Please tell us something about that very special gig...

It was an insane gig, we played to over 20k people in one of the most famous venues in the world. Our singer Luke is from Slane, so it was almost like a homecoming gig for him, it was amazing to see so many people come out to see the opening act and sing along in the rain despite it being 3pm!

Let's talk about Italy. You are going to play at Legend Club in Milan on November the 25th. What are you expectations regarding this show?

We have a close friend who moved to Milan recently (Hi Harry!) and he said it's amazing, we can't wait to play our first headline show in Milan. We've heard Italians love their Rock Music so we're gonna make this one a proper party, and we'll be expecting you guys to join the party.
