La musica country in Italia è un genere musicale fondamentalmente "importato" mentre presumo che per te sia stata una tradizione personale... ho ragione? Qual è stata la prima canzone country che hai ascoltato e che ricordi hai a riguardo?
Sono cresciuto con la musica country. Entrambi i miei genitori erano grandi fan ed era l'unica cosa che ascoltavamo nella station wagon. Da piccolo andavamo a trovare mio nonno e lui metteva i dischi di Roger Miller. "Chug A Lug", "Dang Me"... Roger Miller era un genio, unico nel suo genere. Musicalmente, liricamente, ma specialmente vocalmente. Nessun filtro, un vero capostipite.
Il tuo album, "Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights", è uscito da qualche mese e continua ad andare alla grande. Qual è il miglior feedback che hai ricevuto fino ad ora?
Non do molto ascolto a recensioni e critiche. Spero solo di colpire la gente emotivamente in modo tale che possano collegare le loro vite e le loro esperienze alle canzoni.
Quale sono stati le tue fonti di ispirazione per il tuo ultimo album? Ci sono state delle esperienze personali che hanno dato vita ad alcuni dei pezzi?
Alcune canzoni vengono da esperienze immaginarie mentre altre sono molto autobiografiche. Non sono mai ispirato direttamente da qualcosa in particolare. Personalmente, trovo ispirazione per le canzoni nel silenzio. Essere in un posto tranquillo mi permette di essere una specie di "ricevere" l'ispirazione per ciò che scrivo.
Penso che la musica sia come un buon matrimonio: devi lavorare sodo per migliorarlo ogni giorno. Qual è il segreto del tuo "buon matrimonio" con la musica, dopo 6 album e 16 anni di carriera?
Mantenere le canzoni e le performance veritiere e appassionanti. Scrivo di ciò che mi emoziona e spero che possa emozionare altri.
In tanti qui in Italia hanno scoperto la tua musica grazie a serie TV come Sons Of Anarchy e Californication. Lasciatelo dire, alcune di quelle scene sono perfette con i tuoi pezzi in sottofondo. Come sei riuscito ad includere i tuoi brani in queste serie?
Al tempo, ero completamente indipendente. Non avevo direttori o un'etichetta discografica. Il mio avvocato, che era un grande fan di Sons Of Anarchy, ha chiamato il loro supervisore musicale, l'ha portato a pranzo e gli ha parlato della mia musica.
Com'è stato lavorare con i Forest Rangers?
In realtà non ho lavorato molto con loro. Cantavo su cose che già avevano registrato, oppure univano le varie parti vocali e strumentali dopo averle registrate separatamente. In studio eravamo io e Bob Theile, il supervisore e compositore dello show. Abbiamo però suonato dal vivo un po' di volte in giro per Los Angeles. Sono davvero dei grandi musicisti.
Qual è la collaborazione di cui vai più fiero e che si accoppia meglio col tuo lavoro?
L'unica vera collaborazione artistica è probabilmente "Come Join the Murder". Scritta dai creatori di Sons Of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter e Bob Theile. Loro si sono occupati del testo e io ho scritto il resto, a livello musicale e melodico.
Cosa si cela nel futuro di The White Buffalo? Ci sono già dei piani che puoi condividere con noi?
Il mio programma è sempe quello di continuare a scrivere ed esibirmi. Sto preparando la mia prossima sfida musicale... mi sto orientando verso qualcosa di concettuale.

Sono davvero emozionato di tornare in Italia. È così un bel posto con persone davvero forti. Non vedo l'ora di vedervi tutti a Milano.

In Italy, country music is mainly an "imported" music genre whereas I assume it has always been part of your personal tradition... am I right? What is the first country song you have ever listen to, if you possibly remember... and what are the special memories you have about it?
I was raised on country music. Both my parents were big country and western fans and it was the only thing we'd listen to in the station wagon. As a young child we'd visit my Papa/Grandfather and he'd play Roger Miller records. Chug a lug, Dang me. Roger Miller was a genius, one of kind. Musically, lyrically, but especially vocally. No filter, a true original.
Your record, "Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights", has been out for a few months now and it has been going really well. What is the best feedback you have received so far? And the most unexpected?
I don't put much stock in reviews or critics. I just hope to hit people emotionally in a way that they can attach there lives and experiences to the songs.
What were the main source of inspiration for this latest release of yours? Is there any personal life experience that triggered any of this songs?
Some songs are completed fantasy and others autobiographical. I'm never directly inspired by anything in particular. It's about finding songs in the silence. Being in a place of quiet to essentially be the the receiver.
I personally think music is like a good marriage: you have to work really hard to make it better every day. What is the secret to your "good marriage" with music, after six records and over sixteen years of carrier?
Keeping songs and performance honest and passionate. I write what moves me and hope that they move others.
At the time I was completely independent. I didn't have management or a record label. My lawyer, who was a big fan of SOA called the music supervisor, asked him to lunch and pitched my music to him.
How was working with the Forest Rangers?
I didn't really work with them much directly. I would come in and sing on things that they had already recorded or they would layer things post vocal. I was only in the room with Bob Theile, the supervisor and composer for the show . We did however play live a few times at places around Los Angeles. It's really a great group of musicians.
The only true artistic collaboration would have to be "Come Join the Murder". It was penned by the shows creator, Kurt Sutter, and Bob Theile and I put it to music and melody.
What's in the future of The White Buffalo? Are there any future plans that you can already share with us?
To continue writing and performing. I'm in the process now of writing my next endeavor. I'm leaning towards something conceptual.
