Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su SpazioRock. Il vostro nuovo disco "Global Warning" - il primo con Nuclear Blast - uscirà tra qualche giorno, quindi prima di tutto congratulazioni! Come vi sentite a riguardo?
Shag-U: Non vedo l'ora! Nuclear Blast è stata davvero professionale e sta facendo le cose in grande per la pubblicazione, proprio come merita l'album.
MC: Attendo con ansia le vostre impressioni. L'album contiene molte emozioni. Certo, è bello che ora sia commercializzato da professionisti.
Bobby Undertaker: È un'enorme opportunità, per noi, vedere quali obiettivi potremmo raggiungere con questa band. Nuclear Blast è un'etichetta conosciuta da tutti in ambito metal e la loro reputazione è meritata.
In realtà è difficile descrivere la vostra musica, considerando il particolare mix stilistico che ne è alla base. Si potrebbe chiamare disco-industrial metal, ma cosa aggiungereste a questa definizione?
Shag-U: Penso che questa sia più una domanda per te. Non mi piace rinchiudere la musica nei generi perché, così facendo, si cade sempre in sempre restrizioni del tipo "come dovrebbe suonare" o "ciò che dovrebbe essere".
MC: Sono d'accordo con Saku. Non sappiamo nemmeno che tipo di musica faremo in futuro. A volte, sembra che noi stessi siamo il canale per la nostra musica. Personalmente, non so da dove provengano le mie composizioni.
Bobby Undertaker: In un certo senso, non ho mai avuto familiarità con i generi musicali. Tutti la vedono in modo così diverso, quindi qual è il punto? Direi che ognuno debba ascoltare con le proprie orecchie e decidere con che genere identificare ciò che sente.
Dato che vi piace sperimentare, quali generi vorreste esplorare di più? Avete già qualche idea su come combinarli?
Shag-U: Non ci ho pensato, ad essere sincero. Succede tutto in un momento. Forse MC o RunQ hanno altre idee all'interno delle loro menti contorte.
MC: Non lo so. Forse electro e black metal. Potremmo anche rappare, ma non vogliamo. Ultimamente, le mie composizioni e i miei testi sono piuttosto oscuri.
Bobby Undertaker: Chi lo sa? Qualcosa di accattivante ovviamente, forse un valzer?
Nonostante il taglio heavy, "Global Warning" suona quasi come un album dance, forse anche più dei vostri lavori precedenti. Possiamo affermare che questo lavoro rappresenti un riassunto e un'evoluzione di tutte le vostre esperienze passate?
Shag-U: Direi che è più simile a quello che siamo in questo momento. La musica si evolve e non vogliamo che ci siano regole.
MC: Dobbiamo provarlo anche dal vivo. Dopodiché sapremo cosa fare più avanti. Ma intanto siamo anche in studio. In realtà proprio ora.
Bobby Undertaker: Penso che ogni disco sia una specie di ritratto di quel preciso periodo di tempo. Naturalmente abbiamo fatto molta strada per arrivare fino a questo punto, ma c'è anche un lungo percorso in futuro che ci aspetta.
Personalmente, sono stato particolarmente colpito da due brani: l'anthem iniziale "Naitu" e l'ultimo brano "Mosquito Á La Carte (to be contiuned 5)". Raccontateci qualcosa sul loro processo di composizione...
MC: Per "Naitu", tutto è partito da una melodia. Stavo bevendo in studio e quello era il mio umore in quel momento. Quindi la demo era pronta la notte stessa, non potevo fermarmi prima che lo fosse. Shag-U ha scritto il testo. Per "Mosquito A La Carte (to be contiuned 5)", ho registrato le parole introduttive sul mio dittafono il 18 agosto 2015. Ora è un momento opportunamente assurdo per pubblicare questa profezia. Ma volevamo anche portare un sorriso sui volti delle persone, quindi l'abbiamo reso un tango appassionato.
Canzoni affascinanti come "Jumalauta" e "Turvasana" potrebbero comparire nella colonna sonora di alcuni film cyberpunk. Siete d'accordo? E quanto vi ispira il mondo del cinema?
Shag-U: Be', adoro i film e soprattutto la scena cyberpunk. Sarebbe fantastico se una nostra canzone fosse presente, a esempio, nella colonna sonora del gioco "Cyberpunk 2077".
MC: Non guardo molti film in questi giorni. Non so perché, non riesco più a trovare la concentrazione per guardarli. Ho cinque figli, ecco perché.
Bobby Undertaker: Da grande fan di fantascienza e di cyberpunk, non mi dispiacerebbe ascoltare una nostra canzone in quel tipo di film. Sono sempre stato un amante del cinema in generale, ma purtroppo non ho più molto tempo per guardare film come in passato.
Il lato estetico è molto importante per voi, lo si evince solo guardando l'artwork disco. Cosa c'è dietro questa cover? Esclusivamente provocazione? E chi siete davvero dietro il trucco?
Shag-U: Tuomas Rytkönen, ovvero Spellgoth, è la mente dietro al nostro artwork. Sa davvero come catturare le sensazioni che proviamo, e adoro come "nasconda" i significati nella sua arte. Il makeup che utilizziamo per le maschere è più simile a un rituale per me. E i nostri volti non sono così belli da poter suonare senza trucco.
MC: Puoi trovarmi nelle canzoni. Riguarda te e me.
Bobby Undertaker: Chiunque può interpretare la cover a modo suo e vedere cose diverse in essa. Soltanto Spellgoth conosce la profonda verità che si cela dietro l'artwork.
Potreste fornire una breve spiegazione del contenuto lirico del nuovo album per coloro che non comprendono il finlandese?
Shag-U: In breve, riguarda solo te. Cosa sei veramente, cosa senti e cosa desideri. Nel bene o nel male.
MC: E anche me. E io in te. E tu in me. Che ne dici? Purtroppo, non c'è modo di spiegarla a parole in breve.
La famiglia Turmion Kätilöt ha subito molti cambiamenti nel corso degli anni. In che misura questi cambiamenti hanno influenzato il vostro sound?
MC: Dovrebbe rispondere il pubblico a questa domanda. Sarei poco obiettivo, visto che partecipo all'elaborazione del sound. Penso che esso si sviluppi in una certa direzione perché abbiamo determinati bisogni.
Dopo l'uscita di "Global Warning", supporterete i Nightwish nel loro tour europeo, che dovrebbe svolgersi tra novembre e dicembre 2020. Siete una grande band dal vivo, cosa avete in mente? Di infuocare il palco?
Shag-U: Le persone vogliono essere intrattenute e ci assicuriamo che lo siano. Mi fido della musica e del ritmo.

Hi guys, and welcome to SpazioRock. Your new record "Global Warning" - the first one with Nuclear Blast - is going to be released in a few days, so first of all congratulations! How do you feel about it?
Shag-U: Can't wait! Nuclear Blast has been really professional and they are truly making the release as big as the album deserves.
MC: I look forward to your impressions. The album has a lot of emotion. Of course, it's great that it's now being marketed by professionals.
Bobby Undertaker: It's a huge opportunity for us to see where we can go with this band. Nuclear Blast is a label I think everyone at least in metal genre knows and their reputation is well deserved.
It is actually difficult to describe your music considering your particular stylistic mix. I would call it disco-industrial metal, but what would you add to this definition?
Shag-U: I think this is more like a question for you. I don't like to put music in to genres because in a way the always make restrictions like "how it should sound" or "what is should be".
MC: I agree with Saku. We don't even know what kind of music we're going to make next. At times, it feels like we are the channel for our music. Personally, I don't know where my compositions come from.
Bobby Undertaker: I've always been unfamiliar with the music genres in a way. Everyone sees it so differently so what's the point. I guess you just have to listen and decide yourself what "genre" it is.
Since you like to experiment, which genres would you like to explore more? Do you already have any ideas on how to combine them?
Shag-U: Haven't thought about this to be honest. Everything happens in a moment. Maybe MC or RunQ has some ideas inside their twisted minds.
MC: I don't know. I don't know anything. Maybe electro & black metal. We could rap also but we don't want to. My compositions and lyrics have been quite dark lately.
Bobby Undertaker: Who knows? Something catchy of course, maybe waltz?
Despite the heavy sound, "Global Warning" sounds like a record to dance to, even more than your previous works. Can we say that this record represents a summary and an evolution of all your past experiences?
Shag-U: I would say it is more like what we are just now. Music evolves and we don't want to make any rules to it.
MC: We need to perform it also. After that we know what to do next. But meanwhile we are also in the studio. Actually right now.
Bobby Undertaker: I think every record is a kind of a portrait of that period of time. Of course we have come a long way to get to this point but there's also a long path in the future waiting for us.
Personally, I was particularly struck by two tracks: the anthem "Naitu" and the final "Mosquito Á La Carte (to be contiuned 5)". Tell us something about their composition process...
MC: "Naitu": it all started from that theme melody. I was drinking in studio and that was my current mood. So demo was ready at the same night. I could not stop before it was ready. Shag-U wrote the lyrics. "Mosquito": I recorded the intro words of this song on my dicta-phone on August 18, 2015. Now it was a suitably sick and dangerous time to publish this prophecy. We also wanted to bring a smile to people's faces, so we made it a passionate tango.
Enthralling songs like "Jumalauta" and "Turvasana" could feature the soundtrack of some cyberpunk films. Do you agree with it? And how inspiring is the world of cinema to you?
Shag-U: Well I love films and especially cyberpunk scene. Would be awesome if our song would be featured in "Cyberpunk 2077" game soundtrack for example.
MC: I don't watch a lot of movies these days. I don't know why I can't focus on them anymore. Oh yeah. I have five children. That's why.
Bobby Undertaker: As a huge sci-fi and cyberpunk fan I wouldn't mind hearing our song on that kind of a movie. I've always been a fan of movies in general, sadly I don't have that much time to watch them as like I did in the past.
The aesthetic side is very important to you, it is clear just by looking at the artwork of the record. What's behind this cover? Only provocation? And who are you really behind the makeup?
Shag-U: Tuomas Rytkönen aka Spellgoth is the mastermind behind our artwork. He truly knows how to capture the feeling we have and I love how he "hides" meanings in his art. Makeup masks are more like a ritual of sorts for me. And our faces aren't so pretty that we could play without it.
MC: You can find me in the songs. It's about you and me.
Bobby Undertaker: Anyone can interpret the cover their own way and see different things on it. Only Spellgoth knows the deep truth behind it.
Can you give a brief explanation about the lyrical content of the new album for those who don't understand Finnish?
Shag-U: In short it's only about you. What you really are, what you feel and what you de-sire... In good or bad.
MC: And also me. And me in you. And you in me. How about that? There is no way to make it brief unfortunately.
The TK family has undergone many changes over the years. To what extent have these changes affected your sound?
MC: The audience should answer to this. I am too close because I am part of the sound. I think that our sound develops into certain direction, because we have such needs. So we have to make it.
After the release of "Global Warning", you will support Nightwish on their European tour which is supposed to take place in November and December 2020. You are a great live band, what do you have in mind? To set the stage on fire?
Shag-U: People want to be entertained and we make sure that they will be. I trust in the music and the beat.
MC: Let's make you happy again!
Bobby Undertaker: It a huge opportunity for us and the stages are going to be big. We are ready to deliver.
