Il desiderio di rilasciare un "album complementare", di natura strumentale e che mettesse in luce il lato più ambient dei Riverside, era da tempo nelle menti di Mariusz Duda e compagni. "Eye Of The Soundscape", in uscita nella seconda metà di ottobre, rappresenta finalmente la concretizzazione di tale desiderio, attraverso una buona combinazione tra pezzi che, dal 2007 al 2015, avevano trovato posto solo nella sezione bonus dei dischi della band e quattro inediti, registrati a partire dall'inizio del 2016.

Sarebbe giusto che questo lavoro ricevesse un giudizio oggettivo e staccato da quello che la recente storia dei Riverside ci racconta, ma, dopo la prematura e sconvolgente scomparsa del talentuoso chitarrista Piotr Grudzinski e il conseguente annuncio riguardo il futuro della band, è molto difficile giudicare "Eye Of The Soundscape" semplicemente attraverso le considerazioni espresse sopra. D'altra parte è lo stesso Mariusz a parlarne come un capitolo di svolta, dopo la (da lui non ufficialmente rinominata) "crowd trilogy" rappresentata dalle precedenti tre release.

Si tratta di un lungo album diviso in due parti, la prima delle quali maggiormente focalizzata su componimenti più datati, la seconda invece concentrata sul recente passato. Ciò non può che, in qualche modo, sottolineare l'intenzione della band di svoltare verso nuovi orizzonti, a maggior ragione se si considera che in chiusura del primo disco troviamo i due bellissimi atti di "Night Session", bonus track di "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves", mentre nel secondo troviamo per intero la "Day Session", registrata come materiale aggiuntivo dell'ultimo capolavoro "Love Fear And The Time Machine".

Un nuovo giorno dopo la travagliata notte.

I pezzi nuovi sono uniformemente distribuiti (due per disco) e si adattano perfettamente alla definizione ambient che viene fornita per la release. Tra questi vi è il singolo in apertura "Where The River Flows", che stabilisce subito (assieme all'artwork) un chiaro contatto con il precedente e già citato LFTM. Non è da sottovalutare poi la qualità dei brani remixati, come "Rapid Eye Movement", ai quali viene data nuova vita tramite un alleggerimento dei sintetizzatori, in favore di una maggiore pulizia delle loro linee principali.

A prescindere dalla natura di "Eye Of The Soundscape" e da tutto quello che è il background che lo accompagna, è sempre un piacere avere tra le mani del materiale rilasciato dal gruppo di Varsavia, ormai garanzia di tecnica musicale e qualità di registrazione. Lo stile strumentale e atmosferico non è comunque nulla di nuovo nel pacchetto dei Riverside e può contare da sempre sull'egregio lavoro alle tastiere di Michal Lapaj, ma si trova ora, per la prima volta, ad essere padrone assoluto della scena. Non sappiamo come sarà il futuro, ma questa collezione ci proietta verso un sound che, sebbene sicuramente impoverito nell'anima dall'assenza della chitarra di Piotr, ci lascia fiduciosi di un progetto che ha scelto di continuare senza un chitarrista designato, nel pieno rispetto della gloriosa storia dei Riverside.

The desire of releasing an instrumental "complementary album", highlighting the ambient soul of Riverside, must have been for a long time in Mariusz Duda and his bandmates plans. "Eye Of The Soundscape", whose release is scheduled for the second half of October, finally represents the fulfillment of this desire. The final result is a good combination between songs which had already seen the light between 2007 and 2015, but only in the bonus section, and four unreleased tracks recorded from the beginning of 2016.

It would be fair to give this album an objective judgment, detached from the recent history of Riverside, but, after the premature passing of the talented guitarist Piotr Grudzinski, and the consequent announcement regarding the band's future, it is really hard to judge "Eye Of The Soundscape" simply through the above mentioned considerations. Mariusz himself considers this present release a turning point after the (unofficially renamed) "crowd trilogy" represented by the three previous works.

"Eye Of The Soundscape" is a long album divided into two parts. The first is mainly focused on old compositions whereas the second is concentrated on the recent past. This approach underlines the intention of the band to move toward new horizons. This is particularly true if we consider how the end of the first disc culminates with the two beautiful parts of "Night Session", bonus track of "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves", whereas the second disc highlight is the entire "Day Session" recording, already included, as additional material, in the latest masterpiece "Love Fear And The Time Machine".

A new day after the troubled night.

The new songs are uniformly distributed between the two discs (two each), and perfectly adapted to the ambient definition which is given to the album. Among these, the opening one (first single from the release) "Where The River Flows", creates immediately, together with the artwork, a bond with the already mentioned LFTM. We must not underrate the quality of the remixed tracks either like "Rapid Eye Movement". New life is given to the latter ones by lightening the synths and so providing more cleanliness to the main lines.

Regardless the nature of "Eye Of The Soundscape" and what concerns its background, it's always a pleasure to have some material released by the band from Warsaw, since their name is a guarantee of musical technique and recording quality. Although there is nothing actually innovative in this instrumental and atmospheric approach, with respect to the typical Riverside's style, enriched by the excellent work by Michal Lapaj, this time the band instrumental nature conquers the entire scene for the very first time. We don't know how the future of Riverside will be, but this new collection casts a sound that, although impoverished by the absence of Piotr's guitar, gives us hope in a project that has chosen to go on, even without an appointed guitarist, to respect the glorious past of Riverside.
