I Girish And The Chronicles sono tornati a febbraio, pubblicando il terzo album in studio “Hail To The Heroes”, a due anni di distanza da “Rock The Highway”. La band, ormai punto di riferimento per la scena rock/metal indiana, ci racconta la genesi di questo lavoro senza risparmiare anche alcune novità riguardo i progetti paralleli.

Ciao ragazzi! Benvenuti su SpazioRock! Innanzitutto come state?

Tutto bene. Meglio ora, dal momento che i blocchi e le restrizioni sono diminuiti e siamo in grado di andare in tour.

Avete pubblicato il vostro nuovo album in studio, “Hail To The Heroes”, complimenti! Come vi sentite al riguardo e come è stato accolto dai fan finora?

Grazie! Sta andando alla grande. La risposta è davvero travolgente. È bello vedere persone da tutto il mondo che si interessano così tanto. Anche le recensioni delle webzine sono state davvero fantastiche.

Potreste parlare brevemente del processo di composizione? Quali sono i punti in comune e le differenze rispetto al vostro lavoro precedente, “Rock The Highway”?

Per quanto riguarda il suono, “Hail To The Heroes” è un po’ più vicino a “Rock The Highway”, rispetto all’album di debutto “Back on Earth”. Immaginiamo che abbia a che fare con il fatto che entrambi sono stati creati in una sequenza temporale simile. Mentre “Rock The Highway” ha un suono molto più grintoso, “Hail To The Heroes” è molto più raffinato, maturo e di natura un po’ melodica. Anche gli stili vocali sono diversi nel nuovo album, con molte più variazioni. Non crediamo ci siano molte somiglianze però, a parte l’idea che entrambi hanno un’atmosfera anni ’80.

La tracklist è principalmente divisa in cavalcate hard rock/heavy metal e due potenti ballate. Riuscite a scegliere solo una canzone da ciascuno di questi due gruppi a cui siete maggiormente connessi, professionalmente e personalmente parlando?

Personalmente amiamo l’idea di “I’m Not The Devil”, presa dal primo gruppo di canzoni. Essendo che “Number Of The Beast” degli Iron Maiden è il nostro album preferito di tutti i tempi, possiamo rapportare questa canzone in un modo simile. Professionalmente parlando, creare “Shamans Of Time” è stata una sfida, ma è anche stata la parte migliore. È sempre divertente soffermarsi un po’ sul lato prog delle cose, a volte. Non avremmo mai pensato che questa canzone avrebbe portato a questo risultato. “The Heaven’s Crying” mostra la profondità della musica della band, crediamo. Ci piace anche cantare quella canzone dal vivo!

Potete essere considerati a pieno titolo i portabandiera dell’hard rock classico in India, oltre che un’ispirazione per le giovani band emergenti. Sentite il ​​peso della responsabilità di questo riconoscimento o ne siete per lo più soddisfatti?

Grazie. Sì, in questo momento, ci sentiamo un po’ responsabili, dato che molte giovani band ci guardano. Siamo consapevoli del fatto che dobbiamo continuare a migliorare e migliorare.

Vi ispirate alla musica degli anni ’80, ma aggiungete sempre un tocco di atmosfere indiane. Quanto è importante per voi imprimere la vostra cultura nella musica che create?

Immaginiamo che vivere in un paese come l’India con una vasta cultura e suoni, a volte ci dia qualche idea in più che potrebbe essere divertente da sperimentare. Tuttavia, è quello che è. Anche se siamo consapevoli che cose più sperimentali hanno il potenziale per attirare più persone, scriviamo semplicemente tutto ciò che ci fa sentire bene, piuttosto che pensare a tutto questo.

Nel corso degli anni avete supportato dal vivo grandi nomi del rock/metal. C’è una band o un artista con cui avete sempre desiderato condividere il palco?

Certo, sarebbero gli Iron Maiden, ma sarebbe forte anche condividere il palco con band come i Dokken.

So che è una domanda difficile in questi tempi di pandemia, ma avete intenzione di fare un tour promozionale?

Bene, qualunque opportunità avremo, le coglieremo. Pensiamo che lavoriamo di più “su invito”.

Girish, fai parte del supergruppo Firstborne insieme a J. LoMenzo, C. Adler e H.B. Mirone. Hai pubblicato alcuni singoli negli ultimi mesi. State per pubblicare un nuovo album?

Sì, assolutamente. Abbiamo lavorato su qualcosa che dovrebbe essere pubblicato entro la fine dell’estate, settimana più settimana meno.

Stiamo volgendo verso la fine dell’intervista. Vi va di lasciare un messaggio a fan e lettori?

Siamo assolutamente sbalorditi dalle reazioni che abbiamo avuto per “Hail To The Heroes”! Siamo davvero grati a tutti coloro che ci hanno sostenuto. Promettiamo di continuare a fare un po’ di bella musica così come speriamo di vedervi on the road!

Hi guys! Welcome to SpazioRock! First of all, how are you doing?

We’re doing good. Better now, since the lockdowns and restrictions have become lesser and we’re being able to tour a bit.

You’ve released your new studio album, “Hail To The Heroes”, so big kudos to you! How do you feel about it and how is it being welcomed by the fans so far?

Thank you! It’s going great. The response is really overwhelming. It feels good to see people from all around the world taking so much of interest. The reviews from the webzines have been really great too.

Could you briefly talk about the composition process? Which are the points in common and the differences if compared to your previous work, “Rock The Highway”?

Sound wise: “Hail to the Heroes” is a little closer to “Rock the Highway” album, than the debut album “Back on Earth”. I guess it has to do with the fact that they were both created in a similar timeline. While “RTH” is much more grittier sounding, “Hail to The Heroes” is lot more refined, mature and a bit melodic in nature. The vocal styles are also different in the new album, with much more variations. I don’t think that there’s much similarities though, apart from the idea that they both have an ’80s vibe.

The tracklist is mainly divided into hard rock/heavy metal rides and two powerful ballads. Can you pick up just one song from each of these two groups that you are mostly connected to, professionally and personally speaking?

I just personally love the idea of “I’m not the Devil”, from the first group of songs. Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast” being my all time favourite album, I can relate this song in a similar manner. Professionally speaking, creating “Shamans of Time” was a challenge, which was the best part about it. It’s always fun to dwell a bit on the progressive side of things at times. We never thought that this song would end up like that.
“The Heaven’s Crying” displays the depth of the band’s music I guess. I also love singing that song live!

You can be considered as the standard bearer of classic hard rock in India, and an inspiration for upcoming young bands too. Do you feel the burden of responsibility for this recognition or are you mostly pleased by it?

Thank you. Yes at this point in time, we do feel a bit responsible, as a lot of young bands look upto us. We are aware of the fact that we need to keep improving and making it better.

You take inspiration from 80s music, but always adding a touch of Indian vibes. How important is it to you to imprint your culture in the music you make?

I guess living in a country like India with a vast culture and sounds, does sometimes give us a few extra ideas that might be fun to experiment with. However, it is what it is. Although we are aware that more experimental stuff does have the potential to attract more people, we just write whatever feels good to us, rather than thinking about all that.

Through the years you’ve supported big names of rock/metal live. Is there a band or an artist you’ve always desired to share the stage with?

Of course, that would be Iron Maiden, but it would be wild to hang out and share stage with bands like Dokken.

I know it is a hard question in these pandemic times, but are you planning to go on a promotional tour?

Well, whatever opportunities we get, we will take them. I think we work more on an “invitational” basis.

Girish, you are part of the supergroup Firstborne together with J. LoMenzo, C. Adler and H.B. Myrone. You released a few singles in the past months. Are they on the way to build up a new studio album?

Yes absolutely. We have been working on something that should be released by end summer, a few weeks here and there.

We’re getting to the end of the interview. Would you like to leave a message to fans and readers?

We are absolutely awestruck with the reactions we have been getting on “Hail to The Heroes”! We are really grateful to everyone who have supported us. We promise to keep making some serious kick ass music as we hope to see you on the road!
