A tre anni dal debutto omonimo, gli Spirits Of Fire ritornano con “Embrace The Unknown”, uscito il 18 febbraio per Frontiers Music. Un disco heavy metal allo stesso tempo granitico e ricercato, prodotto di un supergruppo capace ormai di pensare e agire da squadra e che non sembra intenzionato a interrompere la propria corsa. Ne abbiamo discusso con Chris Caffery, chitarrista e co-songwriter della band.

Ciao Chris, e benvenuto su SpazioRock. Innanzitutto come stai? Sei felice per l’uscita di “Embrace The Unknown”?

Ciao SpazioRock! Grazie per questa intervista, sono molto eccitato per l’uscita di questo nuovo disco!

Il titolo del lavoro sembra richiamare le atmosfere degli ultimi tempi, con il mondo afflitto dalla pandemia. È questo il significato o c’è dietro anche qualcos’altro?

Il primo disco degli Spirits Of Fire prendeva il nome dal titolo di una canzone della tracklist e per il secondo volevamo fare la stessa cosa. “Embrace The Unknown” aveva molte ragioni diverse per cui era perfetto. Dalle situazioni attuali al significato profondo dei testi al fatto che le persone non sapevano nemmeno chi sarebbe stato il cantante o come Fabio (Lione, ndr.) si sarebbe inserito nella band. Quindi c’erano molte incognite sul nostro lavoro e molte incognite su tutto ciò che c’è nel mondo in questo momento. Ripeto, penso sia il titolo perfetto per il nuovo disco.

Considerate le restrizioni dovute al Covid-19, è stato difficile registrare le varie parti dell’album? E com’è stato lavorare con Aldo Lonobile in studio?

Il primo disco lo abbiamo registrato in tutto il mondo, quindi con questo album non è stato diverso: abbiamo inciso ciascuno le sue parti nel proprio studio, quindi ho lavorato con Aldo praticamente al telefono e su internet e abbiamo discusso di tutto e lavorato su tutto così! Tutte le mie chitarre sono state registrate nel mio studio personale, a casa. Aldo ha un grande orecchio e ha fatto un ottimo lavoro nel mixare e mettere insieme le voci in questo disco, migliorando il suono delle asce nel prodotto finale. Penso che fosse la persona perfetta per produrre il secondo disco.

Una delle grandi novità è stata la sostituzione di Tim “Ripper” Owens con Fabio Lione. Qual è il stato motivo del cambio in line-up? Cosa ha portato il cantante italiano nel vostro sound?

Mi è stato chiesto di realizzare un secondo disco degli Spirits Of Fire e ho detto di sì e poi la settimana dopo ho scoperto che Ripper e Frontiers avevano deciso di separarsi. Non ho davvero la risposta giusta alla domanda, abbiamo soltanto cercato il sostituto migliore e credo di averlo trovato in Fabio. Penso abbia portato una miscela di melodia e personalità perfetta per la musica, ma ha anche utilizzato la sua voce in un modo molto heavy, cosa che credo nessuno gli avesse mai sentito fare prima. Ha scritto i testi e la melodia e sono tutti fantastici, è un grande autore e non potrei essere più felice della sua performance. Adoro il modo in cui Fabio ha trasformato, nel canto, gli Spirits Of Fire. Ha creato una forma d’arte vocale sublime.

Il vostro stile musicale è stato spesso descritto come un mix tra Judas Priest e Savatage, ma ci sono anche altre influenze in questo album, da Dio a un’aura progressiva più pronunciata. Cosa ne pensi di queste impressioni?

Suono con i Savatage e la Trans-Siberian Orchestra e amo il progressive rock e l’hard rock in tutte le loro forme. I TSO appartengono al mondo della classica e ho amato band come i Rush, oltre ovviamente i Dio e gli Iron Maiden. Penso che in questo album si senta una migliore combinazione di influenze. Inoltre, ho registrato le mie chitarre dopo che Mark (Zonder, ndr.) ha inciso la sua batteria. Quindi ho fuso il mio stile con il suo più progressive e penso che ciò si possa sentire nella nuova registrazione. Steve (Di Giorgio, ndr.) ha aggiunto, poi, un basso incredibile. Adoro questo nuovo disco nel suo insieme. Credo sia davvero un album divertente, da ascoltare fino in fondo!

Tra i vari brani, “Resurrection” e “My Confession” sono diversi, ma ugualmente coinvolgenti ed entrambi sembrano alludere a un’idea di cambiamento. Qual è la storia che si cela dietro le due canzoni?

A differenza del primo disco in cui scrivevo testi e intere canzoni, qui Fabio ha redatto le liriche. Penso sia meglio chiedere a lui la giusta spiegazione delle storie. In realtà, gli sto chiedendo di dirmelo esattamente così ho le risposte perfette, ma forse potremmo fare rispondere direttamente lui a questa domanda! Personalmente voglio provare ad animare lo spirito del fuoco e penso che “My Confession” sarebbe una grande canzone per portarlo in vita!

“Wildest Dreams” appare una sorta di cavalcata di matrice più hard rock: quali sono i sogni più sfrenati degli Spirits Of Fire in senso musicale?

Penso che tutti noi vogliamo solo fare buona musica e creare una grande opera d’arte per i fan. I miei sogni riguardo questa band? Vorrei che continuasse a vivere. Dopo che i Doctor Butcher si sono fermati, non ho mai avuto una metal band nella mia vita che esistesse solo per divertimento, tanto per me quanto per i fan! Speriamo di poter continuare, registrare più materiale e portare tutto ciò on te road. Mi piacerebbe vedere la nostra legione di affezionati crescere e svilupparsi in tutto il mondo.

Sebbene scorra velocemente, “Embrace The Unknown” dura poco più di sessanta minuti. Avevate del materiale accumulato negli anni o tutta la scaletta è il risultato di questi ultimi mesi di lavoro?

Ogni canzone, tranne “Hearts In The Sand”, era nuova di zecca! Nessuna delle altre musiche era rimasta. Ho appena deciso di dedicare un po’ di attenzione alla composizione di questo album. Ho interrotto tutti gli altri. E poiché non dovevo scrivere i testi e le melodie, sono stato in grado di concentrarmi solo sulla scrittura di un po’ di bella musica heavy metal! Si tratta di una mia scelta. Quando scrivo tutte le canzoni a volte mi sembra di lavorare su un altro disco da solista. Volevo una scrittura esterna. Ho scritto le prime quattro canzoni dell’ultimo disco degli Spirits Of Fire interamente da solo. Volevo che questo fosse più uno sforzo completo della band e lo è stato sicuramente!

Gli Spirits Of Fire vengono indicati come un supergruppo. Non sarebbe più corretto considerarvi una vera band, vista la coesione e la solidità di questo secondo full-length?

Personalmente odio il termine supergruppo. Non mi considero diverso da qualsiasi altra persona o musicista sul pianeta. Un grande motivo per cui desideravo fare il secondo disco è che volevo sviluppare il progetto in modo che non fosse un’esperienza una tantum. Penso che questa volta gli Spirits Of Fire sembrino e suonino più come una band.

Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri? Ci sono concerti in programma, magari anche in Italia?

Non sto iniziando a scrivere il mio prossimo disco da solista. Scriverò altre cose per il terzo album degli Spirits Of Fire, ho del materiale avanzato! Sto anche lavorando su alcune idee concettuali che ho per altri progetti musicali. Faccio anche molta arte. Per lo più con vetro marino. In realtà ho venduto circa cinquecento pezzi della mia arte in vetro marino! Sono anche membro di un’azienda di salse piccanti, quindi invento e preparo ricette e con quello. mi tengo sempre occupato! Mi piacerebbe portare in tour gli Spirits of Fire e in un modo o nell’altro sono sicuro che in un prossimo futuro suonerò di nuovo musica dal vivo in Italia!

Grazie ancora per l’intervista e mi mancate tutti! L’Italia è sempre stata vicina al mio cuore, grazie soprattutto ai momenti che ho trascorso lì con i Savatage. Hi Chris, and welcome to SpazioRock. First of all, how are you? Are you happy for the release of “Embrace The Unknown”?

Hello SpazioRock! Thank you for these questions and I’m very excited for the release of this new record!

The title of this new record seems to recall the atmospheres of recent times, with the world plagued by the pandemic. Is this the meaning or is there also something else?

The first record the band was named after a song title and for the second record we wanted to name the album after one and “Embrace The Unknown” had a lot of different reasons why it was perfect. From situations in the world to deep meaning inside the lyrics to the fact that people didn’t even know who is going to be the singer or what Fabio with sound like singing in Spirits Of Fire. So, there was a lot of unknown about our record and a lot of unknown about everything in the world right now. I think it’s the perfect title for the new record.

Considering the Covid-19 restrictions, was it difficult to record the various parts of the album? And what was it like working with Aldo Lonobile in the studio?

The very first record we recorded all over the world, so this record was no different: we all had our parts done in individual studio, so I had worked with Aldo pretty much over the phone and on the Internet and we discussed everything and worked on everything that way! All of my guitars were recorded in my own personal studio at home. Aldo has a great ear and he did a brilliant job mixing and putting the vocals together on this record and he inspired me to put an even better guitar playing into my final work and he was, I think, the perfect person to produce the second record.

One of the big news was the replacement of Tim “Ripper” Owens with Fabio Lione. What is the reason behind this turnover? What did the Italian singer bring to your sound?

I was asked if we wanted to do a second Spirits Of Fire record and I said yes and then I found out, within I believe a week, that Ripper and Frontiers had decided to part ways. I don’t really have the exact answer to that question and what we searched for the perfect replacement, but I think we found that in Fabio. I think he brought a mixture of melody and his personality into this that was perfect for the music, but he also showed his voice in a very heavy metal way that I don’t think anyone had ever heard him do. He wrote the lyrics and melody on this record and they were all very awesome he’s a great songwriter and I couldn’t be happier with the performance he had on this record! I love how he basically transformed into Fabio the singer of Spirits Of Fire for this. He created a heavy metal vocal form of art that was perfect for this!

Your musical style has often been described as a mix between Judas Priest and Savatage, but there are other influences on this album as well, from Dio to a more pronounced progressive aura. What do you think of these impressions?

Well, I play with Savatage and with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and I love progressive rock and a hard rock in all different kinds of music. TSO goes into the classical world and I loved bands like Rush and of course Dio and Iron Maiden. I think you just hear a better combination of influences on this record. Also, I recorded my guitars after Mark recorded his drums. So, I say and rehearsed new parts to marry him and his progressive style which I think you can hear in the new recording. It sounds more like a band to me and Steve put incredible bass on top. I love this new record as a whole. I think it’s a really fun listen too to bottom!

Among the various tracks, “Resurrection” and “My Confession” are different, but equally enthralling and both seem to allude to an idea of change. What’s the story behind the two songs?

Unlike the first record where I wrote lyrics and entire songs, Fabio wrote these lyrics for this record. I think it’s best to ask him for the perfect explanation of the stories. I am actually asking him to tell me exactly so I have the perfect answers but maybe we can have him answer just this question for you! I personally want to try and animate the Fire Spirit and I think “My Confession” would be a great song to bring him alive to!

“Wildest Dreams” appears as a sort of hard rock ride: what are the wildest dreams of Spirits Of Fire in a musical sense?

I think we all just want to make good music and create a great piece of art for the fans. My dreams of this band would be to have this outlet continue. After Doctor Butcher stopped, I haven’t really had a metal band in my life that was there for fun! Just to make fun and cool metal for myself as well as the fans. Hopefully we can keep developing this and recording more and bring this to the road. I’d love to see our own SOF Legion develop world wide.

Although it runs fast, “Embrace The Unknown” is just over sixty minutes in length. Did you have material accumulated over the years or is it the result of these last months of work?

Every song, but “Hearts In The Sand” was brand new! None of the other music was left over at all. I just decided to put some really focused attention into just writing for this album. I stopped all other writing. And since I didn’t have to write the lyrics and melodies, I was able to focus on just writing some cool heavy metal music! That was my own choice. When I write the entire songs sometimes it just feels like I’m working on another solo record. I wanted the outside writing. I wrote the first four songs on the last Spirits Of Fire record entirely myself. I wanted this one to be more of a complete band effort and it is for sure!

Spirits Of Fire are often referred to as a supergroup. Wouldn’t it be more correct to consider you as a real band, considering the cohesion and solidity of this second full-length?

I personally hate the term supergroup. I don’t consider myself any different than any other person or musician on the planet. A big reason why I wanted to do the second record is I wanted to develop this and not be a one time “supergroup” attempt. I think this time it feels and sounds more like a band to me.

What are your future projects? Are there any concerts planned, maybe even in Italy?

I’m not starting to write my next solo record. I will write some more stuff for Spirits 3, I had leftovers from this writing for that too! I’m also working on some concept ideas I have for music projects. I do a lot of art as well. Mostly with sea glass. I’ve actually sold about 500 pieces of my sea glass art! I also am a par of a hot sauce company so I still do my recipes and with for that. I always stay busy! I’d love to get Spirits of Fire on the road and one way or another I’m sure I’ll be playing live music in Italy again in the near future!
