Iniziamo con una tua dichiarazione: "Scrivo musica strumentale per dire cose per le quali non riesco a trovare le parole." Si può dedurre che tu tenda quindi ad esprimere i tuoi sentimenti attraverso la musica anche nei momenti speciali della tua vita. Qual è la canzone che descrive di più questo scenario?

Ho scritto una canzone per i miei due figli chiamata "The Reason" che esprime a pieno la mia felicità di diventare padre. Adoro l'idea di poterli far crescere ed insegnare loro come essere buoni e gentili, dei piccoli uomini.

Ora andiamo avanti con qualcosa legato alle tue radici musicali... in che modo i Pantera hanno  influenzato la tua carriera?

Ho consumato "Cowboys From Hell" e "Far Beyond Driven" mentre crescevo. Mi piace ancora ascoltare quegli album, ma quello che faccio ora con la chitarra acustica è un piuttosto differente. La maggior parte della mia musica è piuttosto tranquilla e melodica rispetto a quella dei Pantera, direi.

In realtà qualcosa di cui i nostri lettori metallari più giovani potrebbero non essere a conoscenza è che non sei solo un maestro del fingerstyle, ma hai alle spalle una storia heavy metal. Qual è il più bel ricordo di quella fase del tuo percorso musicale?

Ho iniziato a suonare con gli amici a scuola, facendo cover di brani di Metallica, Dream Theater, Pantera appunto, Helmet, Primus, Rage Against The Machine, band del genere. Ricordo che abbiamo vinto il talent show scolastico facendo quelle cover, quando avevamo 14 anni. E' stato molto divertente!

Poi YouTube ha cambiato tutto: sei diventato una tale star del web che Prince in persona ti ha chiesto di esibirvi insieme. Ci diresti di più su quel giorno?

Prince mi ha invitato a Paisley Park per incontrarmi. Era il 2012, penso. Abbiamo suonato un po', ho eseguito un po' della mia musica solista per lui e l'ha davvero apprezzata. Ha poi organizzato un tour in Australia dove abbiamo condiviso 9 concerti, è stata una vera avventura. Abbiamo suonato in stadi sold out ed è stato bellissimo. Anche se è stato molto divertente, credo di aver ottenere il massimo quando scrivo ed eseguo la mia musica personale, così alla fine della corsa gli ho detto che non pensavo di essere il ragazzo giusto per l'incarico. In seguito abbiamo parlato di un album acustico almeno un paio di volte, ma purtroppo non è mai successo.

I tuoi fan italiani potranno ascoltare la tua musica dal vivo tra pochi giorni. Cosa possono aspettarsi dalla scaletta? Qualche cover inaspettata?

Farò principalmente la mia musica, assieme ad alcune cover. Non faccio troppe cover generalmente, mi piace eseguire il mio materiale. È quello che mi ha reso popolare agli inizi. Quindi canzoni come "Drifting, "Rylynn" e "For My Father" ci saranno. Avrò anche la mia harp guitar, quindi la utilizzerò!

Siamo tutti curiosi di sapere quando avremo la possibilità di ascoltare nuovo materiale di tua produzione. Sono sicura che hai lavorato su alcune nuove idee in tutti questi anni...

Sì, ho un nuovo album piuttosto interessante che uscirà l'anno prossimo.

Trieste, Busto Arsizio, Roma e Somma Vesuviana: hai intenzione di sfruttare al massimo questo tour per visitare le bellezze del nostro paese?

Sì, assolutamente! Ho già suonato in Italia un paio di volte ed è stato fantastico poter dare un' occhiata in giro. Non abbiamo una storia molto lunga negli Stati Uniti, quindi per me è bello vedere siti storici e musei. L'Italia ha fatto così tanto nel corso del tempo...

Hai considerato di coinvolgere altri musicisti e/o una band di supporto per un tour futuro

Sì, questo è in effetti un tour solista ma in futuro potrebbe essere diverso, sto scrivendo musica per più strumenti in questo periodo.

Tornando al tuo tour precedente, vorrei chiederti della tua esperienza con i Dream Theater. C'è qualche indicibile aneddoto avvenuto dietro le quinte di quegli spettacoli che vorresti condividere con i nostri lettori?

È stato un grande onore per me. Sono diventato un fan dei Dream Theater circa 25 anni fa e non avrei mai immaginato, quando ero un adolescente, che avrei avuto modo di andare in tour con loro, specialmente come chitarrista solista! Quei ragazzi sono tutti estremamente cool. Sono rispettosi e gentili e fanno il loro lavoro da autentici professionisti. C'è molto per cui ammirarli, oltre alle loro abilità musicali.

Consideri possibile un drastico cambio di stile in futuro?

Sì. A volte come artista effettui dei "cambi di rotta" o trovi ispirazione da fonti diverse dal solito. Ho riacceso la mia passione per i sintetizzatori e la chitarra elettrica, in grande stile. Il mio prossimo album sarà un mix di musica acustica solista e una sorta di rock anni '80 (ma non troppo melenso). Ho lasciato intravedere alla gente quello che sto facendo su Instagram e Facebook e la risposta del pubblico è stata incredibile. È incoraggiante perché, beh, è molto diverso da quello che faccio di solito, ma penso che le persone possano ancora sentire che sono comunque "io", anche se sto suonando altri strumenti.

E che dire di una collaborazione con una band? Quante band hai rifiutato durante la tua carriera? Qualche rimpianto?

La musica che sto scrivendo ora è tutta composta ed eseguita da me, ma forse avrò bisogno di una band quando la eseguirò dal vivo. Vedremo! In passato ho fatto alcune collaborazioni e sono state tutte fantastiche. Ho avuto anche un paio di opportunità che però non pensavo fossero la scelta giusta, e non mi pento di averle rifiutate. Non vivo nel rimpianto, è una perdita di tempo.

Un'ultima domanda, piuttosto difficile: chi è il miglior chitarrista di tutti i tempi?

Non esiste un chitarrista migliore di tutti gli altri. Per quanto riguarda l'ascoltarne uno, preferisco Michael Hedges.

Let's start with... something you wrote: "I write instrumental music to say things I don't have words for." One can assume you that you tend to express your feelings through music also in special moments in your life. Which is the song that describes such a scenario the most?

I wrote a tune for my two sons called "The Reason" that really captures my happiness from becoming a father. I love getting to raise them and teach them how to be good and kind young men.

Now we move on with... something related to your musical roots: how have Pantera influenced your early career?

I rocked out with "Cowboys From Hell" and "Far Beyond Driven" when I was growing up. I still enjoy listening to those albums, but what I do on the acoustic guitar is kind of different from that really. Most of my music is pretty chilled out and melodic compared to Pantera, I guess.

Actually something our younger metalhead readers may not be aware of is that you are not just a master of fingerstyle but you do have an heavy metal history. What is your best memory of that phase of your musical path?

I started out playing with friends in school, we would do covers of Metallica tunes, Dream Theater, Pantera, Helmet, Primus, Rage Against The Machine, bands like that. I remember we won the school talent show when we would pay those cover tunes when we were like 14 years old. It was a lot of fun!

Then YouTube changed everything: you became such a web-star that Prince himself asked you to perform together. Would you tell us more about that day?

Prince invited me up to Paisley Park to meet up. This was 2012 I think. We jammed a bit and I played some of my solo music for him and he really dug it. He set up a tour in Australia where we did 9 concerts and it was a real trip. We were playing for sold out arenas and it was cool. While that was a lot of fun, I guess I get the most out of writing and performing my own music so I told him at the end of the run that I didn't think I was the right guy for the spot. We talked abut doing an acoustic album a couple of times after that but sadly, it never came to be.

Your Italian fans will be able to enjoy your music live this week. What can they expect from your setlist? Any unexpected cover version?

I'll be doing my music mostly, with a few covers in there. I don't do too many covers really, I like to perform my original music. It's what made me popular in the first place. So songs like "Drifting" and "Rylynn", "For My Father" will be in there. I'll have my harp guitar with me too so I'll play some tunes on there!

I think we are all curious to know when we will have the chance to listen to some new material from yourself... I am sure you have been working on some new ideas over all this years...

Yes I have, I've got a new album that will be quite interesting coming out next year.

Trieste, Busto Arsizio, Roma and Somma Vesuviana: are you going to make the most of this tour to visit the beauties of our country?

Yeah man! I've played in Italy a couple of times before and it was awesome getting to look around. We don't have a really long history in the USA so for me, it's cool to check out historical sites and museums. Italy has done so much through the course of time.

Have you considered to involve any other musician and/or a support band for a future tour?

Yeah, this tour is still just a solo show. The future might change though, I am writing music for multiple instruments these days.

Going back to your past tour, we must ask you about your experience with Dream Theatre. Is there any untold backstage anectode of those shows that you would like to share with our readers?

That was a huge honor for me. I've been a fan of DT around 25 years now and I never would have guessed when I was a teenager that I would get to tour with them, especially as a solo acoustic guitar guy. But man, those guys are all extremely cool. Everyone is respectful and kind and does their job Ike a total pro. There is a lot to admire abut them aside from their musical abilities.

Do you consider possible any dramatic change of style in future?

Yes. Sometimes as an artist, you have a change of heart or an inspiration from another direction. I have been rekindling my passion for synthesizers and electric guitar in a big way. My next album will be a mix of solo acoustic music and a sort of 80's rock (but not too cheesy). I've been letting people get a glimpse of what I'm up to on Instagram and Facebook and the response has been incredible. It's encouraging because, well, It's really quite different from what I usually do, but I think people can still hear that it's "me" even though I'm playing other instruments.

And what about any collaboration with a band? How many band have you turned down during your career? Any regret?

The music I am writing now is all composed and performed by myself, but perhaps I will need a band when I perform it live. We shall see! In the past I have done some collaborations and they were all cool. I did have a couple of opportunities come up that I didn't think were the right fit too, but I don't regret turning them down. I don't live with regret, it is a waste of time.

One last critical question: who is the best guitar player of all times?

No one is the best. As far as listening to a guitarist play, I would prefer Michael Hedges.
