(Ndr ride) Sì, assolutamente! Voglio dire ... ci sono momenti in cui ci svegliamo ed esclamiamo: "wow, in che città siamo?" Andiamo così veloci, di solito facciamo cinque spettacoli a settimana, quindi è molto difficile ricordare dove siamo e dove siamo stati!

Qual è la cosa che ti piace di più ogni volta che raggiungi un posto nuovo?

Per me tutto ruota attorno al suonare. Sai, essere in grado di suonare per i fan di tutto il mondo, è per questo che sono qui, e lo amo così tanto! È così divertente, i fan dei Dead Daisies sono così fedeli e devoti, siamo davvero grati di averli!Viaggiare così tanto è molto difficile così come essere lontano dalla famiglia...

Parliamo di musica: "Burn it Down" evoca il meglio del rock degli anni settanta. Vieni da un vissuto e da un background molto vario date le tue innumerevoli esperienze, qual è l'era del rock'n'roll a cui ti senti più legato?

Gli anni '80! Sono un ragazzo degli anni ottanta! Voglio dire, sono nato nel 1964 e mi sono perso le cose buone degli anni '60, ed ero un po' troppo giovane per gli anni '70, ma crescendo ascoltavo i KISS e i Journey e verso gli anni '80 ho iniziato a suonare professionalmente: quella è stata e sarà sempre la mia era.

Parlando di The Dead Daisies: siete una band che comprende bene il potere dei social media. Vi vedo postare molto spesso per aggiornare i fans, praticamente quasi ogni giorno! Tu però hai vissuto l'era pre-social media. In che modo questo enorme cambiamento ha influenzato la tua vita e il tuo rapporto con i fan?

Sai, pur trovandomi in questo mondo da moltissimi anni, non ho mai dovuto usare i social media o promuovermi nel modo in cui lo fanno i Dead Daisies. È tutto così "social", ed è stata un'esperienza enorme per me, condividere tutte queste cose e parlare ai fan è davvero gratificante, conoscere queste persone e far parte della loro vita è qualcosa che amo, un'esperienza che mi rende così felice! Questa band è così vicina ai suoi fan ed è una cosa incredibile, li stiamo incontrando tutti e facciamo nuove amicizie!

Il singolo "Can't Take it With You", è stato pubblicato il 12 ottobre e lanciato su Planet Rock. Cosa succede nella mente di un musicista nel momento esatto in cui presenti nuova musica al mondo?

La cosa bella è che la maggior parte dei fan conosce già il disco, le persone che vengono a sentire i The Dead Daisies conoscono già "Burn it Down" e conoscono la canzone, e quando usciamo con un nuovo singolo loro conoscono già le parole, ed è incredibile perché cantano insieme a noi e riceviamo una grande risposta ogni volta!

Sei un grande batterista e un cantante fantastico. Qual è la canzone che hai sempre sognato di cantare dal vivo e che non sei mai riuscito a fare?

Oh wow. È difficile...ma ti dico questo. Essendo sempre stato un grande fan dei Journey, cantare le loro canzoni, alcuni dei più grandi successi con loro è stata per me una grande esperienza e un immenso onore. Steve Perry è il mio cantante preferito di tutti i tempi, ma devo dire che mi piacerebbe fare "I Wanna rock'n'roll all Night" di KISS. Mi sarebbe piaciuto suonare nei KISS ma ho un aspetto terribile con indosso gli spandex!!!

Non mollate. Voglio dire, se è davvero quello che volete fare, qualcosa che è davvero una passione per voi, continuate a suonare. Dio sa se le stelle si allineano, magari tra qualche anno suonerete davanti a migliaia di persone. Sono stato molto fortunato ad essere onesto. Non ho dovuto suonare in un sacco di piccoli club da ragazzo. Sono stato in molte band progressive anche da giovane, 16 o diciassette anni, ho suonato in posti abbastanza decenti. Ma io sono stato estremamente fortunato, la mia prima grande band sono stati i Bad English e avevo solo 23 anni. E poi Hardline, Paul Rodgers, Ozzy e e di colpo suonavo nei Journey... e ora The Dead Daisies! Lo adoro. In realtà adesso sono in grado di vedere i fan, è una cosa meravigliosa. Sai, di solito quando suonavo in grandi arene dalla mia postazione in fondo al palco, riuscivo a malapena a vedere solo il primo paio di file, ma non dovete sottovalutare il fatto di essere più vicino a i fan, dove puoi vedere i loro occhi, i sorrisi sui loro volti, è davvero gratificante.

Parlando del tuo rapporto con la musica: c'è stato un momento nella tua vita in cui la musica ti ha salvato la vita?

Oh si. Assolutamente. Quando lasciai i Journey. Non volevo più suonare. Volevo solo smettere. Era come se avessi perso l'amore per la musica, l'amore per suonare, e avevo bisogno di concentrarmi sul mio recupero dalla droga e dall'alcool. Dopo un anno e mezzo mi sono detto che forse era tempo di tornare a suonare e cantare e le opportunità si sono presentate e ora ogni singolo spettacolo con i The Dead Daisies è una conferma. Riafferma il fatto che questo è ciò che sono nato per fare: sono di nuovo innamorato ed è stato davvero difficile allontanarmi per un po', ma era una necessità, dovevo farlo.

Se dovessi scegliere una canzone che incarna tutto ciò in cui credi, in questo preciso momento della tua vita cosa sceglieresti?

In questo momento dovrei dire "Resurrected" dei The Dead Daisies perché mi sento totalmente tale, mi sento risorto. Voglio dire: avrei dovuto essere morto con tutto l'alcol e le droghe che stavo consumando! Con quella canzone mi sento come se fossi tornato, sto suonando di nuovo, sono resuscitato. Sono vivo, sono un padre, un marito, un nonno e la vita è di nuovo meravigliosa! Quindi quella canzone è un grande messaggio per me.

C'è qualche giovane musicista di cui sei un fan in questo momento?

Non sono sicuro di quanto sia giovane, ma sono un grande fan di Corey Taylor! E sono un grande fan degli Stone Sour! Credo sinceramente che Corey sia un genio. È un grande cantautore, un poeta, mi piacerebbe lavorare con lui un giorno, è semplicemente geniale!

Ok, vuoi lasciare un messaggio per i fan che ti aspettano in Italia settimana prossima?

Beh, sai, io sono siciliano quindi l'Italia per me è una seconda casa! Sarò onorato di suonare per voi ragazzi, vivete in un paese che amo moltissimo! Ho lavorato molto con la Frontiers Records lì quindi sono entusiasta di tornare!

(Laughs) Yeah, totally! I mean... there are times when we wake up and we're like: "wow, what city are we in?" We go so fast, and usually do five shows a week so it's very hard to remember where we are and where we've been!

What's the thing you like most everytime you reach a new place?

For me it's all about playing. You know, being able to play for fans all over the world, that's why I'm out here and i love it so much! It's so much fun, Dead Daisies fans are so loyal and dedicated, we're just grateful to have them! You know the travelling stuff is so hard... being away from family...

Let's talk about your music: "Burn it Down" evokes the best of seventies rock. You come from a very diverse background given your countless experiences, which is the rock'n'roll era you feel more bound to?

The 80s! I'm an eighties kid! I mean I was born in 1964 I kind of missed the good stuff of the 60s and I was a little too young for the 70s but growing up I would listen to KISS and Journey and towards the 80s I started to play a lot professionally so that was my era.

Talking about The Dead Daisies: you're a band that understands well the power of social media. I see you posting so often updating your fans almost everyday! You have lived the pre-social media era. How did this huge change affect your life and your relationship with fans?

For me, being in this journey as long as I was I have never had to use social media or promoting the way that way the Dead Daisies do know. It's all so social media driven and it was a huge experience for me, sharing things and talk to fans it's really rewarding, getting to know these people and being a part of their life it's something I love, an experience that makes me so happy. This band is so close to its fans it's an amazing thing, we're actually meeting them and making new friends!

"Can't take it with youwas released on October the 12th and launched on Planet Rock. What happens the very moment before you present some new music to the world in a musician's mind?

The beautiful thing is that the most of the fans already know the record, the people that come to The Dead Daisies shows know "Burn it Down" and they know the song and when we come out and do a new single they already know the words and it's incredible cause they all sing along with us and we get a great response from the singles we release!

You're both a great drummer and an amazing singer. Which is the song that you have always dreamed to sing live and never managed to do?

Oh wow. That's a tough one but I tell you this. Having always been a huge Journey fan, being able to sing their songs, some of the hits with them it was a huge experience for me and an honor. Steve Perry is my favorite vocalist of all time but I have to say I would love to do "I wanna rock'n'roll all nite" by KISS. I would have loved being part of KISS but I look terrible in spandex!!!

You've been part of so many succesfull bands through the years selling out huge arenas around the world. Do you still remember the feeling of playing small clubs performing in front of a handful of people or you never (luckily) experienced that? There are so many musicians struggling to make it, what would you say to them?

Just stick to it. I mean if it's really what they wanna do, something that's really a passion to them, just keep playing. God knows if stars align you'll be playing in front of thousands of people. I was very fortunate to be honest. I didn't have to play a lot of small clubs as a youngster. I was in a lot of progressive original bands even at a young age, 16 or seventeen, I've been playing pretty decent size places . But I was eztremely fortunate, my first really big band was Bad English and I was 23 years old. And then Hardline, Paul Rodgers, Ozzy and then I was in Journey and now The Dead Daisies! I love it. I am actually able to see the fans, you know usually when I played in big arenas being in the back of the stage I could hardly see only the first couple of rows, but you don't have to underestimate the fact of being closer to the fans, where you can see their eyes, the smiles on their faces, it's really rewarding.

Talking about your relationship with music: was there a moment in you life when music actually saved your life?

Oh yes. Absolutely. There was that time when I left Journey. I didn't wanna play anymore. I just wanted to quit. It was like I had lost the love for music, the love for playing, and I needed to focus on recovery from the drugs and the alcohol. After a year and a half I told to myself maybe it's time to go back playing and singing again and opportunities came up and now every single show with The Dead Daisies is reaffirmation. It reaffirms the fact that this is what I was born to do I and am in love again and it was really difficult to walk away from it for a while but it was a necessity, I had to.

If you were to choose a song that embodies everything you believe in, in this very moment of your life what would you pick?

Right now I would have to say The Dead Dayisies' "Resurrected" cause I totally feel like it, I feel resurrected. I mean I should have been dead with all the acohol and drugs I was consuming! With that song I feel like I am back, I am playing again, I am resurrected. I am alive, I am a father, a husband, a grandfather and life is good again! So that song is a big message for me.

Is there any young musician you're a fan of in this moment?

I am not sure how young is he, but I am a big fan of Corey Taylor! And I am a very big Stone Sour fan! I genuinely believe Corey is a genius. He's a great songwriter, a poet, I'd love to work with him someday, he's just brilliant!

Ok, do you want to leave a message for the fans waiting for you in Italy next week?

Well, you know, I am sicilian so Italy feels like a second home to me! I will be honored to play for you guys, you live in a country I love very very much! I've done a lot of work there with Frontiers Records so I am excited to be back!
