Siamo veramente soddisfatti dalle reazioni ricevute finora riguardo l'album! Ha già ottenuto valutazioni positive: 8.5, 9, addirittura 10, dalle riviste più importanti del web e cartacee. Inoltre i lettori di questi magazine ci hanno contattati, scrivendoci messaggi e commenti, per dirci che l'album li ha colpiti o che lo considerano tra i migliori del 2016. Quindi, come puoi immaginare, questo risultato ci ha fatto stampare dei bei sorrisi in faccia.
Restando dal vostro lato dell'Egeo, il riferimento mitologico, ovvero il rimando alla figura della donna-ragno punita da Atena, è evidente. Avete scelto questo concept per motivi culturali oppure avevate a cuore questo soggetto anche per altre ragioni?
Dal punto di vista della storia in sé ci sono un sacco di emozioni che abbiamo pensato potessero trasparire dalle nostre tracce e sembra che il concept abbia funzionato. Il particolare il mito greco svela un concetto topico (come tanti altri miti greci), ovvero come, alla fine, la giustizia non sia sempre dalla parte dei giusti. Inoltre, ci sembrava importante che la gente conoscesse la storia e le origini greche di una creatura con cui tutti noi abbiamo familiarità.
Sbaglio o, oltre all'inglese, ci sono anche dei passaggi delle lyrics in greco?
In effetti ci sono. In particolare nella traccia "Nouthetisis". E' greco antico come pure il titolo del brano. Volendolo tradurlo, è una sorta di avvertimento, per qualcuno, a cambiare idea su un argomento.
Parlando di metal che affonda le radici nella vostra mitologia è impossibile non citare i Virgin Steele. Questa band vi ha in qualche modo inspirato nel vostro percorso? O avete altri modelli?
Non proprio. Abbiamo familiarità con la musica e la storia della band, li ammiriamo e li rispettiamo, ma nessuno di noi si è ispirato ai Virgin Steele. Ci sono molte band che hanno fatto tentativi simili ma non c'era alcuna ispirazione particolare nella scelta del soggetto o nel creare un concept album. Essendo greci, siamo cresciuti con le stesse favole e storie che la gente raccontava qui, come le storie della buonanotte oppure quelle che abbiamo imparato a scuola. Usare questo argomento come tema centrale per il disco ci è venuto naturale.
Restando in tema di influenze, quali sono state le tue? Salta subito all'orecchio la tua notevole capacità canora, una voce lirica d'impatto. Quale è stato il tuo percorso musicale?
Grazie per le parole gentili! Sono stata influenzata da molti artisti. Potrei citare Tarja, Lisa Gerard, Renée Fleming come le influenze più importanti, per la semplice ragione che ho ascoltato molto i loro lavori. Io stessa ho un diploma in canto classico e, negli ultimi 5 anni, ho lavorato come insegnante di canto professionista. Suono il pianoforte e lira cretese in primo luogo e anche altri strumenti di volta in volta.
Tornando al vostro secondo album, rilasciato il 23 ottobre, nella quarta traccia, ho scovato anche una voce growl: chi di voi si è preso la responsabilità di registrarla?
Thanos, il nostro bassista fa le voci growl. Il growl non è tipico nella nostra band, ma sia su "The Bargaininge" dal nostro album precedente, che su "Time Immemorial" in "Arakhne" avevamo bisogno di usare questo stile.
Davvero interessanti sono anche le collaborazioni vocali che avete deciso di inserire in questo album, due cantanti ben noti al pubblico italiano: Fabio Lione e Chiara Malvestiti dei Therion, ovvero due esponenti del spicco della scena symphonic metal. Come vi siete trovati a collaborare con loro? Siete riusciti a incontravi di persona?
Lavorare con gli italiani è sempre figo e ci piace. Greci e italiani hanno molto in comune. Sono sicura che conoscete con l'espressione "una faccia, una razza" (in italiano nel testo originale, ndr). Non abbiamo incontrato di persona Fabio, ma abbiamo parlato molto e sembra un tipo davvero cool, professionale ma molto amichevole. Invece ci siamo incontrati con Chiara e anche collaborato in una performance al Metal Female Voices Fest nel mese di ottobre. Possiamo dire che è una nostra amica. E' una persona incredibile, divertente e molto dolce! Lavorare con entrambi è stato facile e piacevole!
Sempre in merito agli ospiti, ho notato la presenza di Jeff Waters degli Annhilator nella traccia dal titolo "Nouthetisis". Ha partecipato anche alla composizione del brano? Come siete arrivati a questa scelta?
Jeff ha composto il suo assolo su questa traccia. Ci serviva un assolo potente vecchia scuola in questo pezzo che aveva una certa atmosfera thrash metal grazie alla sezione ritmica. Si può dire che era personale, abbiamo incontrato Jeff di persona tempo fa in un festival all'estero, era un tipo molto cool, così abbiamo pensato subito a lui. Una storiella divertente: noi tutti abbiamo apprezzato il suo lavoro nel corso degli anni, ma Steelianos e Thanos sono dei fan fedelissimi degli Annihilator.
La componente sinfonica è splendidamente presente in questa vostra seconda fatica, chi di voi ha composto la parte orchestrale?
Il nostro tastierista, Leonidas. Siamo felicissimi di aver lavorato con lui a questo album. Steelianos e Leonidas hanno fatto una grande collaborazioni per quanto riguarda le composizioni musicali.
La proposta di una composizione in cui una vocalist femminile ha un ruolo di primo piano non è certo nuova in ambito symphonic. Se doveste scegliere una traccia capace di dimostrare al vostro pubblico in cosa vi differenziate dalle altre band, quale sarebbe?
Dovrei citare troppe tracce per farne una lista ma abbiamo menzionato "Nouthetisis" prima e credo possa essere un buon esempio.
C'é qualche speranza di vedervi esibire in Italia nel 2017? Avete già in programma altri festival per il nuovo anno?
Non saprei rispondere con date, nomi e festival precisi, ma ci vedrete lì di sicuro!

Hi Eliana and welcome to SpazioRock.it! Before presenting your latest work, "Arakhne", let's introduce yourselves: a symphonic metal act from the cradle of classical culture, Greece. You have just released your second album and some may consider this step a difficult one. Are you satisfied with the feedback received so far?
We're very happy with the response so far concerning the album! It's already got high ratings: mostly 8.5, 9, even 10, by the biggest magazines and webzines, and the people that bought it have contacted us through messages and comments to tell us that the album touched them, or that they believe it to be one of the best records of 2016. So, as you can imagine, such a response puts smiles on our faces!
Facing the topic from your side of the Aegean Sea, the mythological reference to the spider-woman punished by Athena is clear. Have you chosen this concept only for cultural reasons or was it something you were into for other reasons as well?
As a story, there are plenty of emotions that we thought could shine through our tracks and, as it seems, the concept did us right. The particular Greek myth proves a point that is topical in our days as well (as plenty of other Greek myths) that in the end, justice isn't always by the side of the righteous. Also, it felt really good that people would get to know the Greek origins and tale of a creature we're all familiar with.
Am I mistaken or, along with English lyrics, there are some lines in Greek too?
Indeed there are. More specifically in the track "Nouthetisis". It's ancient Greek as is the title of the track as well. If we have to translate it, it's some kind of warning to someone to change one's mind on a subject.
Speaking of other metal bands, whose roots can be found in the ancient classical mythology, we must mention Virgin Steele. Has this band somehow inspired your path? Do you possibly have other models you would like to mention?
Not really. We're familiar with the band's music and history, and we admire and respect them, but none of us were inspired by Virgin Steele. There are many bands that have done similar endeavours, but there wasn't any specific inspiration on choosing the subject or making it a concept album. Been Greeks ourselves we've grown up with these tales as stories our people told us of, like bed time stories, or even learned many in school, as well. Using this topic as the centrical theme of the record felt right and came out easy.
What have been your influences, Iliana? Your remarkable vocal skills are evident, you do have impressive opera voice. What is your background?
Thank you very much for your kind words! I'm influenced by many artists. I could mention Tarja, Lisa Gerard, Renee Fleming as the most important influences, for the simple reason that I've heard a lot of their work. I, myself, own a diploma in classical singing and teach singing as a profession for the last 5 years. I play the piano and Cretan lyre primarily, but I've played other instruments from time to time.
Going back to your second album, released in October, I heard some growl in the fourth track: who is responsible for that?
Thanos, our bass player, does the growls in the band. Growls are not a core thing in our band, but on both on "The Bargaining" from our previous album, as well as "Time Immemorial" on "Arakhne" we needed them to serve the purpose of the song as best as possible.
We found very interesting the collaboration with two well renowned Italian vocalists: Fabio Lione and Chiara Malvestiti from Therion, definitely big names in the symphonic metal scene. How was working with them? Did you manage to meet them on this occasion?
Working with Italians is always cool and we enjoy it as Greeks and Italians have a lot in common (I'm sure you're familiar with the expression "una faccia, una razza"). Now for Fabio and Chiara, we haven't met in person with Fabio, but we've talked to a certain extend and he seems like a really cool type, professional but very friendly. But we met with Chiara as well as performed with her at the Metal Female Voices Fest in October, and we can call her our friend. She's also an amazing person, fun and really sweet! Working with both of them was easy and smooth!
Talking of guests, I noticed the involvement of Jeff Waters from Annhilator for the track "Nouthetisis". Did he collaborate on the composition process of the song as well? How did you end up choosing him?
Jeff only composed his solo on this particular track. We needed a bad-ass old-school solo on this track, the track had a certain vibe to it that resembled thrash metal elements on the rhythm section. You can say it was personal, as we had met in person with Jeff a while back in festivals abroad, and he was such a cool guy, so we thought of him really quick. Fun relative fact: we all admire his work over the years, but Steelianos and Thanos were die-hard Annihilator fans.
The symphonic component of this second work of yours is as strong as beautiful, who composed the orchestral parts?
Our keyboard player, Leonidas. We are extremely happy that we worked with him on this album. Steelianos and Leonidas had a great cooperation regarding the musical compositions.
A symphonic act with a female vocalist is nothing really innovative nowadays but.. if you could name a track capable to prove how you differ from the rest of the bands out there, what that would it be?
I'm sure one can find plenty tracks to name, I'll just go with "Nouthetisis" as we mentioned it earlier and I believe it serves the purpose well.
Is there any chance to see you live in Italy in 2017? Have you already planned any festivals for next year?
I cannot name specific dates and/or festivals, but you'll see us for sure!
