Beh, entrambi condividiamo la stessa passione per la musica e condividiamo più o meno il pensiero generale su cosa sia la buona musica! Quindi immagino che questo renda l'intera operazione più facile, almeno dal mio punto di vista. Non abbiamo mai avuto discussioni per quanto riguarda la direzione presa, che era comunque abbastanza chiara fin dall'inizio. Suppongo che entrambi si abbia moltissimo rispetto reciproco e questo rende le cose abbastanza agevoli. Non sorprendentemente, Nordic Union è una sorta di mix tra il lato più melodico sia dei Pretty Maids che degli Eclipse.
Il nome "Nordic Union" sembra estremamente potente e appropriato, dal momento che l'ondata scandinava della scena hard rock è più forte e creativa che mai. Alcuni dicono che sia qualcosa nell'aria ... o forse voi avete ancora quell'attitudine tipica del rock che molte band europee hanno perso?
Beh, il nome stesso è abbastanza ovvio in questo caso poiché rappresenta semplicemente quello che è. Intendo una collaborazione tra due alleati scandinavi!Per quanto riguarda la parte creativa ormai la Scandinavia sforna materiale melodico da 30 o 40 anni e ti giuro che non ho una spiegazione particolare per questo, ma una buona canzone è una buona canzone, su questo non ci piove.
Il nuovo album "Second Coming" sarà pubblicato molto presto. Rappresenta tutti gli standard elevati che abbiamo già imparato a conoscere. Il songwriting è di altissimo livello, la produzione è fantastica. Quali sono le principali differenze che i fan noteranno immediatamente rispetto alla release di debutto?
Beh, prima di tutto sono felice di sentirlo! Ovviamente c'è sempre un qualche tipo di pressione quando devi dare un seguito ad un primo album di successo. Ma a dire il vero, anche questa volta le cose sono venute fuori in maniera molto naturale. Sapevamo entrambi che doveva essere buono e di alto livello e alla fine ce l'abbiamo fatta. La principale differenza tra "Second Coming" e il debutto è che questo in alcune parti è un po' più "lunatico", più profondo musicalmente e per quanto riguarda le lyrics, ma a dirla tutta questo era il nostro obiettivo sin dall'inizio. Non volevamo fare una copia esatta del debutto.
Erik Martensson sembra essere un fantastico prestigiatore, suona la chitarra solista e la ritmica, il basso, le tastiere e canta le Backing Vocals, così come veste il ruolo di produttore di questo disco. Quale ruolo è quello con cui si sente più a suo agio?
Beh, non posso davvero rispondere a questa domanda, ma posso solo essere d'accordo su tutto ciò. È un grande cantautore, cantante e musicista! Assolutamente!
Un video per il singolo "Because of Us" è stato rilasciato alcune settimane fa. C'è questa ragazzina raccapricciante che vi insegue in una foresta oscura. Puoi dirci di più sul significato di questa canzone?
Temo di non poterlo fare (ndr ride). Non c'era davvero alcun particolare storyboard per questa canzone, Erik e il regista hanno avuto l'idea e quello che vedi è il risultato.
La tracklist comprende molti stili diversi con "una spolveratina di Eclipse". Le melodie sono estremamente accattivanti e una delle più sbalorditive è senza dubbio "New Life Begins" per la sua intensità e passione. Qual è la storia dietro questa canzone?
L'autore è Erik, ma a me piace molto la canzone, cerco solo di aggiungere la mia passione come posso ad una melodia orecchiabile! Mi è piaciuta molto dalla prima volta che l'ho sentita!
Quale è stata la prima canzone che Erik ti ha inviato per coinvolgerti in questa vostra unione?
"Hypocrisy" è stata la prima canzone che ho ricevuto da Erik ed è quella che mi ha convinto a partecipare a questo progetto!
Avremo la fortuna di ascoltare le nuove canzoni dal vivo qui in Italia? Forse l'anno prossimo?
Purtoppo non ci sono piani per spettacoli dal vivo al momento! Sia Erik che io saremo molto impegnati da ora in avanti con le nostre band e progetti individuali. Quindi non è dietro l'angolo, ma mai dire mai!

Hi Ronnie and welcome to SpazioRock.it! Let's start talking about influences and results. Pretty Maids had a huge impact on Eclipse's music, so joining forces must have been easy from the start for both of you. Which is the feature you would say (in the sound of Nordic Union) that incorporates both styles at their best?
Well I guess that we both kind of share the same passion for music as well as we both more or less share the thought of what good music is! So I guess it kind of makes this whole project more easy going, at least from my perspective. We've never had any arguments regarding the direction, that was pretty clear from the start anyway. I guess we both have a mutual respect for each other and that makes things pretty smooth. Not surprisingly Nordic Union is some kind of a mix between the more melodic side of Pretty Maids and Eclipse.
The name "Nordic Union" sounds extremely powerful and appropriate, since the Scandinavian wave of the hard rock scene is stronger and more creative than ever. Some say it's something in the air... or maybe you have some kind of attitude that a lot of the European bands have lost?
Well the name itself was kind of obvious in this case since it is what it is, I mean a collaboration between two fella Scandinavians! As for the creative part of it. I guess a lot of good melodic stuff came out of Scandinavia the last 30 or 40 years ! I don't really have a particular explanation for that, but a good song is a good song, you know!
Your new album "Second Coming" is going to be released very soon. It embodies all the high standards we have already experienced. The songwriting is of the highest standards, the production is fantastic. What are the main differences that your fans will immediately notice compared to your previous release?
Well, first of all, I'm happy to hear that! Well of course there's always some kind of pressure there when you have to follow up a succesfull album. But to tell you the truth things must came out pretty smooth and natural this time as well. We both knew it had to be good and of a high standard and I think it turned out that way. The main difference between Second Coming and the debut is that this one in certain parts are a bit more moody/deeper musically and lyrically, but that was our aim from the beginning. We just didn't want to do an exact copy of the debut to be honest.
Erik Martensson seems to be some amazing kind of a wizard, being the Lead & Rhythm Guitar, playing Bass, Keyboards and singing Backing Vocals, as well as the producer of this record. What role is the one he feels more comfortable with?
Well I can't really answer that question, but I can only agree on all that. He's a great songwriter, singer and musician! Absolutely!
A video for "Because of Us" was released some weeks ago. There's this creepy little girl chasing you in a dark forest. Can you tell us more about the meaning of this song?
Well I'm afraid I can't, ha ha. There wasn't really any particular storyboard for this song I guess! Erik and the director had some idea of it ! However what you see is the outcome!
The tracklist embodies lots of different styles with "sprinkles of Eclipse" on top. The melodies are extremely catchy, and one of the most jaw dropping ones is undoubtedly "New Life Begins" for its intensity and passion. What's the story behind this song?
Again it's hard for me to explain since Erik wrote NLB on his own. But yeah I like the song a lot, I just try to bring in some passion and add what I could. But it's a real catchy tune ! Loved it from the first time I heard it!
What was the first song Erik sent you to involve you in this union of yours?
"Hypocrisy" was the first song I received from Erik back then and that's the song that convinced me to participate in this projec.
Will we be lucky enough to listen to the new songs live here in Italy? Maybe next year?
Well there are no plans for any live shows at the moment! Both Erik and Myself will be very busy from now on and onwards with our own bands and individual projects. So it ain't just around the corner, but never say never!
