Salve Ronnie, è davvero un onore per me poter fare due chiacchiere con un cantante della tua caratura. Innanzitutto devo dirti che sei stato semplicemente grandioso nei recenti concerti coi Rainbow: mi hai ricordato Ronnie James Dio, la tua voce è davvero un faro nelle tenebre!

Grazie mille!

Talvolta i sogni diventano realtà. Che ne diresti di raccontarci un po' meglio di come si è realizzato il tuo? Hai ricevuto la chiamata di Blackmore qualche mese fa, gisuto? E poi che è successo?

Ho ricevuto un messaggio da Candice (Night, ndr) un anno fa e fu lei a dirmi di questo progetto che Ritchie aveva in mente. Ovviamente stentavo a crederci. Il mese successivo incontrai Ritchie in Germania, andammo a cena, parlammo e suonammo qualcosa insieme.

Fantastico. Fin dal principio hai avuto un buon feeling con Ritchie Blackmore, che come ben sai, ha scoperto alcuni dei più grandi cantanti Rock di tutti i tempi. Inoltre è sempre stato famoso per i suoi scherzi. Dicci, durante questi mesi di prove e concerti, te ne ha fatto qualcuno?

Beh, Ritchie ha questa particolarità: è un giullare. Ma va bene così, è capace di mettere ciascuno a proprio agio, di farli sentire parte di una famiglia, farli sentire come amici, quindi ogni scherzo che fa è OK, va bene. Infatti, settimana scorsa, ho fatto un piccolo errore: ho lasciato le finestre della mia camera di albergo aperte e Ritchie ci ha tirato dentro una bottiglia d'acqua e altre cosette, è stato divertente.

Il solito vecchio Ritchie Blackmore, lo so bene!
Tornando a noi, quanto è difficile esibirsi di fronte a un pubblico oceanico come quello di Birmingham, oppure quelli in Germania? Non sembravi affatto teso...

Beh, per me è davvero facile. Non so perché ma non divento mai nervoso prima dei concerti. Ritchie riesce sempre a farmi sentire a mio agio ed è così facile affrontare il pubblico, sia che si tratti di cinquecento persone o di migliaia, non è un problema, veramente.

Ottimo. Intendo, sei proprio nato per far rock!

(Ride) Credo di si.

Si, lo credo anche io!
Sia tu che Candice Night, sui social network, non avete lasciato granché speranze riguardo ad ulteriori concerti dei Rainbow nel 2017: non c'è proprio alcuna chance di un tour mondiale con questa nuova line-up dei Rainbow?

Non so se ci sarà un tour mondiale ma forse è possibile che ci siano altre date.

Wow.

Questo se Ritchie è soddisfatto del nostro operato e di ogni membro della band. C'era un gran feeling durante gli show, quindi credo che sia possibile, si.

Ma soltanto in Germania e Inghilterra o magari anche nel resto d'Europa?

Forse anche in altri paesi.

Fantastico. Ovviamente noi speriamo che veniate a suonare in Italia.
Il concerto di Birmingham è sembrato il più intenso di tutti e tre e anche la band sembrava in forma migliore rispetto a quanto non lo fosse stata in Germania. "Soldier of Fortune" è stata strepitosa. L'avevate provata o Blackmore ha deciso di suonarla sul momento?

In ogni show Ritchie decide sul momento quale canzone verrà suonata come successiva: è sempre come se si trattasse di una jam session, come se stessimo provando. A noi va bene così perché siamo preparati a questo. "Soldier of Fortune" e "Burn" non erano nella scaletta di Birmingham, è stata una sorpresa sia per il pubblico che per la band, ma abbiamo ugualmente offerto una buona prova.

Io ero presente, ero in Germania per il secondo concerto, vicino a Stoccarda (clicca qui per il LiveReport). E' stato straordinario per me naturalmente. E' stato come se i Rainbow degli anni '80 fossero tornati di fronte al pubblico, è stato incredibile per noi spettatori. E sembra proprio che tu sia la voce capace di condensare tutte le altre che si sono esibite per Ritchie negli anni. Hai avuto qualche difficoltà nell'interpretare questi grandi classici del Rock, dai Deep Purple ai Rainbow?

Beh, credo che il difficile stia nel fatto che tutte queste canzoni sono ovviamente come degli inni del Rock'n'Roll, interpretate da grandi cantanti prima di me come Ronnie James Dio, Turner, Bonnet e Coverdale, anche David White.. sono i miei eroi, per certi versi, dato che sono cresciuto ascoltando le loro canzoni. Iniziai ad ascoltare Rainbow e Deep Purple quando avrò avuto forse dodici o quattordici anni. So tutte le canzoni. Credo quindi sia per questo che sia facile per me, saranno vent'anni che le conosco. Davvero, non è problema, cioè non si tratta soltanto delle canzoni, ma piuttosto di reggere il paragone coi cantanti.

Si, certo, ma ce l'hai fatta, ci sei davvero riuscito.

Beh, ci ho provato! (ride)

Verrà pubblicato qualche album live o DVD basato su questi tre show?

Si, abbiamo ripreso i primi due in Germania quindi qualcosa verrà pubblicato, anche se non so se si tratti di un DVD o un Blue-ray, inteso come un riassunto di questo primi concerti.

Mi fa molto piacere saperlo perché c'ero, sarebbe davvero un gran ricordo.
Adesso una domanda un po' più insolita: che cosa pensi dei Blackmore's Night? Ti piace quel tipo di musica rinascimentale?

Si, certo lo adoro. Ritengo Candice una grande, grandissima cantante. Ha un non so che di magico nella voce, nel modo in cui riesce ad esprimere i testi. E Ritchie è molto a suo agio nel suonare questo genere di musica. Forse la gente dovrebbe vederlo suonare la chitarra acustica: è assolutamente formidabile.

Formidabile, esattamente. Li ho visti quindici volte in Germania e so precisamente che intendi.

Amo davvero come suona, non soltanto la sua Stratocaster ma anche la chitarra acustica.

Magari potresti essere ospite nel prossimo tour dei Blackmore's Night.

Beh, mi piacerebbe di certo! Ma non so, vedremo.

Parliamo adesso un attimo dei Lords of Black. L'italiana Frontiers Records ha pubblicato l'album di questa tua band e ti aspettiamo a ottobre a Milano per il Frontiers Metal Festival. C'è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi fan italiani?

Si, certo. Apprezzo molto il buon feedback che abbiamo ricevuto dall'Italia. Credo che abbiamo una sorta di legame speciale per via del nostro sangue latino, sai? E amo sul serio quello che i fan italiani sanno trasmetterci riguardo al nostro lavoro e al nuovo album. Infatti non vediamo l'ora di suonare a Milano.

Ottimo. Siamo decisamente più accoglienti dei fan tedeschi e inglesi, lo vedrai. Adesso giusto un altro paio di domande. C'è speranza che venga pubblicato un disco di inediti dei Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow?

Beh, non abbiamo ancora parlato di questa possibilità. Sento che siamo nella giusta direzione affinché accada. L'anno scorso parlavamo di sole tre date mentre adesso si discute della possibilità di più concerti. Vedremo che succede, spererei davvero che ciò si realizzasse.

Sarà il tempo a risponderci dunque. Rigaurdo alle passate formazioni, chi è il tuo cantante preferito dei Rainbow e dei Deep Purple?

Per quanto riguarda i Rainbow è Ronnie James Dio, i primi tre album della band sono i miei preferiti. Mentre per i Deep Purple... sono cresciuto ascoltando Ian Gillan ma non so perché preferisco comunque l'era di David Coverdale, credo che sia per il suo modo di cantare, quindi si, preferisco Coverdale.

Quindi possiamo dire che Ronnie James Dio e Coverdale sono coloro che ti hanno ispirato maggiormente.

Si, assolutamente.

Hi Ronnie, it's a real honor to have a chat with such a great singer. First of all I have to say you were simply great at the recent shows with Rainbow: you remind me Ronnie James Dio, your voice is a light in the dark!

Sometimes dreams come true. Can you talk a little bit more about your dream? Did you receive a call from Blackmore some months ago? And then what's happened?

I received a message from Candice one year ago and she told me about this project that Ritchie had in mind. Obviously I couldn't believe it. Then one month after that I met Ritchie in Germany and we had dinner and a talk and we played some music.

Fantastic. Since the very beginning, you have been in tune with Ritchie Blackmore, who, as you already know, has discovered some of the greatest Rock singers of all times. He has always been famous for his pranks, during these months of rehearsing and concerts has he pulled any on you?

Yeah, well, Ritchie has a kind of particularity: he is joker. But it's fine, he makes everybody feeling comfortable and everybody feels like to be part of a family, like a friend. So everything he does as a joke it's OK, it's fine. In fact, last week I made a little mistake in my room at the hotel: I left the windows open so Ritchie thrown, inside my room, some kind of bottle of water and another few things and it was funny.

How difficult is being in front of a vast audience as the one in Birmingham, or those in Germany? You didn't look tense at all...

Well, for me it's really easy. I don't know why but I never get nervous before the shows. Ritchie always makes me feel good so it's so easy to be in front of the audience. It may be five hundred or thousands, it's not a problem really.

It's great. I mean, you're born to rock!

(Laughing) I think so.

Yeah, I think so too!
On social networks, both you and Candice Night have left no room for hope regarding new Rainbow shows in 2017: is there really no chance for a world tour with the new Rainbow line-up?

I don't know if we are going to make a world tour but maybe some more dates are possible.

Wow.

If Ritchie is fine with our jobs, with all the members of the band. We had a great feeling at the shows and I think it's possible, yeah.

But only in Germany and England or maybe also in the rest of Europe?

Maybe other countries.

Fantastic. We hope you will come to Italy, of course.
The show in Birmingham felt the most intense of all three and the band looked in a better shape than it was in Germany. "Soldier of Fortune" was mind-blowing. Had you been rehearsing it or Blackmore decided to play it at that very moment?

In every show Ritchie decides what song is going to be next: it's always like a jam session, it's like a rehearsal. It's good for us because we are prepared for that. "Soldier of Fortune" and "Burn" weren't in the setlist in Birmingham, it was a surprise for the audience and it was a surprise for the band, but we made a good show anyway.

I was there, I was in Germany for the second concert, near Stuttgart (click here for the LiveReport). It was really great for me of course. It felt the Rainbow from the '80s came back in front of the audience, it was incredible for us. It feel like you are the voice able to recap all those other ones Ritchie had along the years. Have you had any difficulties in interpreting these great classics of Rock, from Deep Purple to Rainbow?

Well, I think it's difficult because all these songs are like anthems of Rock'n'Roll, of course, and great singers before me, like Ronnie James Dio, Turner, Bonnet and Coverdale, even David White.. they are my heroes in some ways because I grew up listening to their songs. I started listening to Rainbow and Deep Purple when I was maybe twelve, fourteen years old. I know all the songs. I think it's easy for me because of that, I have been knowing these songs for maybe twenty years. Really, it's not a problem, it's not just the songs, it is more the singers.

Yes, of course, but you made it, you really made it.

Well, I tried! (laughing)

Is any live album or DVD going to be released based on these three shows?

Yes, we filmed the first two shows in Germany so I think we are going to release something. I don't know if it is a DVD or a Blue-ray, like a resume of these first shows.

I'm very happy to hear this because I was there, it would be a great memory.
A strange question now: what do you think about Blackmore's Night? Do you like that kind of renaissance music?

Yes, of course I love it. I think Candice is a great, great singer. She has some of kind of magic in her voice and in the way she can express the lyrics. And I see Ritchie very comfortable in playing this kind of music. Maybe people need to see him playing acoustic guitar: he is absolutely amazing.

Amazing, exactly. I saw them fifteen times in Germany I know precisely what you're saying.

I really love how he just doesn't play his Stratocaster but acoustic guitar too.

Maybe you will be a guest in the next Blackmore's Night tour.

Well, I would like that, yes! But I don't know, we'll see.

So let's talk now a little bit about Lords of Black. The Italian Frontiers Records released the album by your band and we are waiting for you in October at Frontiers Metal Festival in Milan. Do you want to say anything to your Italian fans?

Yes, of course. I really appreciate the good feedback we have received from Italy. I think we have a special connection because of our Latin blood, you know? And I really love how Italian fans make us feel about our work and the new album. In fact we can't wait to play in Milan.

Fantastic. We are warmer than German and English fans indeed, you will see that! Now just two more questions. Is there any hope to se a brand new album of unreleased tracks by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow?

Well, we haven't talked yet about this possibility. I feel that we are in the right direction to make things happen. Last year there were just three shows and now there is the possibility of additional shows. We will see then what happens, I really hope for this to happen.

So time will tell. Who is your favourite Rainbow and Deep Purple former singer?

Ronnie James Dio is the best as far as Rainbow are concerned and the first three albums of Rainbow are my favourite. Regarding Deep Purple, I grew up listening to Ian Gillan but I don't know why I prefer David Coverdale era, I think I feel more a it's up with his way of singing, so I prefer Coverdale.

So we can say that Ronnie James Dio and Coverdale have inspired you the most.

Yes, absolutely.
