Hello Chris and welcome to our webzine, SpazioRock.it. Given to your evident interest in science, we would like to run a little experiment with you today. Let's start from the chemistry of the band. As you may know, many chemical reactions have something called a ‘limiting reactant' - it basically is the one ingredient on which the amount of product of your reaction depends on. What is yours?

Let's see... ours is probably shame. We often find ourselves sitting in the writers room with a song that could probably be a gigantic pop smash but it just doesn't sound like We Are Scientists. We are ashamed of the idea of copying someone else's style and that shame prevents us from releasing the tune and from thus becoming gigantic pop sensations.

Is being a 3-element act somehow limiting for your artistic and sound solutions?

We decided on our second record to ignore the limitations of being a trio when it comes to recording our music. When we record our songs we allow ourselves to imagine that we have 15 members if we want to - whatever's gonna sound best for the song - and then we just have accepted that when we play live, we have to figure out a way for 3 people to represent the song in a way that is often not the same as the record, but making sure it's exciting and cool. And for someone that has heard the songs on the record, I think it could be fun to hear a re-interpretation live.

Since you're scientists, what has been your unexpected discovery been so far?

Hmm... it's a good question. I guess maybe how many different songs we could write and kind of continue to find new ideas - how we could continue to feel like we could create something new, without running out of juice or something to say. Every time you finish an album you feel like you have done anything that you could think of to make the songs great, and the idea of writing another 40 minutes-worth of great songs is very scary. But it's kind of amazing that every time you sit down writing again, something comes, there's always something new and exciting and enjoyable to record.

Moving to physics - optics, more specifically: listening to "Megaplex" is a sort of 3D experience with respect to the more planar, but bubbly, "Helter Seltzer". What has driven you out of the 2D world, into an additional dimension?

We really wanted this record, "Megaplex", to feel heterogenous as opposed to ‘consistent' as "Helter Seltzer" does. I think part of the reason we felt ok about doing that is because people listen to music now in a very scattered way. You go on Deezer or Spotify and listen to the individual song that you want to hear, and people have become less dependent on a 10-song album as a way of listening to music. We wanted this album to feel a little bit more different from song to song, 3-dimensional as you say. I think people's listening expectations and desires have changed in the last few years, so we wanted to cater to that. And it's also fun as a band to play around with different sounds so that we have some guitar rock songs, electronica songs, some weirdo songs, and it's fun to put those altogether on a record.

Charles Darwin may have not predicted this but... even Indie music is having its own evolution. What is your theory about it?

To me the big question is: what will happen with guitars? Guitars are probably not worth now as they were two years ago or four years ago. We are in a pretty bad time for guitars, but I don't think they're going to go away. I think people still like hearing them, there's just an important change that needs to happen where we figure out a way to incorporate guitars into some of the other top sounds that people are really excited about right now. And we've tried to do that with songs like "One In One Out" on this record, but I think there is a lot of figuring out that needs to happen. Nobody has really quite nailed it. Hip-Hop is incorporating more guitars than ever, but it still feels like Hip-Hop and not Rock 'n Roll, so... I don't know what the future is for Rock 'n Roll, I think there is one and hopefully we will be a part of it.

I hope so! Still talking about Natural Selection, what are the top 3 tracks on your ideal playlist and why?

From "We Are Scientists": "Lethal Enforcer", "Heart is a Weapon" and "Now or Never" - I think they just represent a good span of our Pop-y yet guitar-inclusive tunes. Top 3 tracks from any artist... that's a much more difficult question. "Keep on Loving You" by Reo Speedwagon, "Rape Me" by Nirvana and "Man is not Hot" by Big Shaq. Those represent everything that's good about music.

Despite your academic rigour, the one of a proper scientist as you are, you seem to have a great time on stage. On the 27th of May, you will have the chance to share this method of yours with your Italian fans, in Milan. What are you going to teach them this time?

We will teach them how to extract the maximum amount of joy in about 90 minutes of their lives. If they listen carefully and take notes, they'll be able to apply this everyday from that concert to the day they die. This could be a real shift in perspective for every fan at that show.

If you were given the funds to set up an R&D project aimed to win a Noble Prize, in what discipline would that be? Why?

This is a far-fetched project, but since you allowed for that with your question, I would say dumping a lot of R&D money into a linguistics project, the goal of which was to develop a new rhetorical style that would apply to any language. A new style of discussion and argument that would prevent and eliminate any room for counterfeit or non-factual claims and would destroy the ability of an arguer to lie. I think that would be an incredibly useful and productive medicine right now, that the world would be very benefited by.

Your website features a blog which offers you the chance to be in touch with your fellow scientists and students. Can't avoid asking you about the post on the "7 Need-to-Know Facts About Star Wars"...

(Laughs, Ed.). Well, a lot of that stuff is new even to Star Wars fans and a lot of it it's sort of an important introduction to Star Wars, for people who have never heard of it. So when you are creating a 7-point Star Wars-related Q&A, in order to include everyone, from people who haven't heard of it to people who have studied the movies, you're really gonna have to go to the most basic stuff to the most interesting and detailed. And I think that's what we tried to do with that, and we received a lot of great feedback. Even big Star Wars fans were shocked by some of the revelations in that piece.

Before leaving your creative and colourful lab, is there a wise message you would like to send our readers and your Italian fans?

My most sincere message to Italian fans would be that we love coming to Italy, absolutely love the Italian culture and people we have encountered in our brief few shows and we would love to have a reason to come more often. But unfortunately our music doesn't seem to be too popular in Italy and if you are a fan of We Are Scientists, please tell your friends and family and try to get them interested, try to get them to come out to the shows. It would be our deepest fantasy if we could spend, the amount of time that we spend in the UK, if we could spend that in Italy instead, that would be an absolute dream. But it does require more Italian fans (laughs, Ed). That's my message!

Ciao Chris e benvenuto sulla nostra webzine, SpazioRock. Dato il vostro interesse evidente per la scienza, volevamo proporvi un esperimento per oggi. Iniziamo dalla chimica della vostra band. Come sicuramente già saprete, molte reazioni chimiche hanno un reagente limitante - ovvero un ingrediente sul quale dipende la quantità di prodotto della vostra reazione. Qual è il vostro?

Vediamo... il nostro probabilmente è la vergogna. Molto spesso ci troviamo nella stanza di composizione a scrivere una canzone che potrebbe diventare una gigantesca hit pop, ma non sembra essere roba per noi. Ci vergogniamo dell'idea di copiare lo stile di qualcun altro e quella vergogna ci impedisce di rilasciare un pezzo, impedendoci di diventare delle Pop star sensazionali.

Essere una band di 3 elementi è limitante per il vostro sound e per i vostri elementi artistici?

Nel secondo album abbiamo deciso di ignorare le limitazioni che derivavano dall'incidere musica come un trio. Quando incidiamo le nostre canzoni ci concediamo di immaginarci come un gruppo di 15 membri - qualsiasi cosa pur di garantire un sound eccezionale al pezzo. Solo che poi dobbiamo fare I conti con le performance dal vivo e dobbiamo capire come rendere il pezzo interessante con solo 3 persone. Dobbiamo cercare di rappresentare la canzone in un modo che spesso differisce dalla registrazione del disco, ma cercando di renderla ugualmente emozionante. E per alcuni che hanno sentito le musiche del disco, potrebbe sembrare divertente ascoltarle in una nuova interpretazione.

Essendo scienziati, qual è stata per voi una scoperta inaspettata?

Hmm... ottima domanda. Penso sia stata quella di capire quante canzoni diverse riuscivamo a scrivere e quante nuove idee riuscivamo ad avere. Capire che riuscivamo a creare qualcosa di nuovo, senza esaurire mai la benzina. Avevamo sempre qualcosa da dire. Ogni volta che finisci un album pensi che hai dato tutto quello che avevi e il solo pensiero di rimetterti a scrivere 40 minuti di musica, ti spaventa. Ma è fantastico quando ti siedi a scrivere e scopri che c'è ancora qualcosa di nuovo ed emozionante da poter incidere.

Passando alla fisica, più specificatamente all'ottica, ascoltando "Megaplex" si percepisce un'esperienza tridimensionale rispetto alla più planare e allegra "Helter Seltzer". Cosa vi ha spinto fuori il mondo bidimensionale, verso un altro tipo di dimensione?

Volevamo che "Megaplex" fosse più eterogeneo rispetto a "Helter Seltzer" che era più armoniosa. Parte del motivo per cui abbiamo pensato fosse una buona idea deriva dal fatto che oggi si ascolta musica in modo più sparpagliato. Vai su Deezer o Spotify e ascolti i singoli che vuoi ascoltare, la gente non è più dipendente da album di 10 canzoni. Volevamo che il nostro album fosse variegato, tridimensionale - come dici tu. Le aspettative e i desideri di chi ascolta sono cambiati negli ultimi anni, quindi volevamo adeguarci. È anche divertente per la nostra band giocare con diversi suoni, un po' di rock, un po' di elettronica, un po' di altre cose strane, è divertente poter mettere tutto questo insieme in un disco.

Charles Darwin potrebbe non averlo predetto ma... anche la musica Indie sta vivendo una sua evoluzione. Hai una tua teoria su ciò?

Per me la vera domanda è: cosa ne sarà delle chitarre? Le chitarre non hanno più lo stesso valore come due o quattro anni fa. È un brutto periodo per le chitare, ma non credo svaniranno. Credo che alle persone piaccia ancora sentirle, ma penso ci sia il bisogno di incorporarle nei nuovi sound che fanno emozionare la gente oggi. E noi abbiamo tentato di farlo con canzoni tipo "One In One Out" in questo album, ma c'è ancora tanto su cui lavorare. Nessuno ci è ancora mai riuscito. L'Hip-Hop sta utilizzando moltissime chitarre, riuscendo ad essere ancora Hip-Hop piuttosto che Rock 'n Roll... No so quale sia però il futuro del Rock 'n Roll. So che ne avrà uno e spero che riusciremo a farne parte.

Lo spero! Parlando sempre di selezione naturale, quali tracce fanno parte della top 3 della tua playlist ideale e perché?

Le top tre delle nostre sono: "Lethal Enforcer", "Heart Is A Weapon" e "Now Or Never" - credo rappresentino la vastità di quelle nostre melodie Pop con appunto la chitarra. Le top 3 di altri artisti... è molto più difficile.. "Keep on Loving You" di Reo Speedwagon, "Rape Me" dei Nirvana e "Man Is Not Hot" di Big Shaq. Queste rappresentano tutto ciò che c'è di buono nella musica.

Nonostante il vostro rigore accademico, quello di veri scienziati, sembra che vi piaccia davvero scatenarvi sul palco. Il 27 maggio avrete modo di condividere questo vostro approccio con i vostri fan italiani a Milano. Che cosa gli insegnerete stavolta?

Gli insegneremo come estrarre la quantità massima di gioia in 90 minuti della loro vita. Se ascolteranno attentamente e prenderanno appunti, riusciranno ad applicare questo insegnamento ogni giorno per il resto della loro vita. Potrebbe davvero cambiare prospettiva a tutti i fan che verranno a quello spettacolo.

Se ti venissero dati dei fondi per un progetto di Ricerca e Sviluppo, con l'obiettivo di vincere un Premio Nobel, in quale disciplina lo svolgeresti? Perché?

Questo sarà sicuramente un progetto inverosimile, ma dato che me lo chiedi... io investirei in un progetto di linguistica, con lo scopo di creare una nuova retorica che si possa applicare a qualsiasi lingua. Un nuovo stile discorsivo e di discussione che preverrebbe e eliminerebbe ogni affermazione contraffatta, distruggendo ad un oratore l'abilità di mentire. Credo sarebbe un medicinale incredibilmente importante per questi tempi, che potrebbe portare diversi benefici al nostro mondo.

Il vostro sito ha un blog che permette di entrare in contatto con i vostri colleghi scienziati e altri studenti. Ma non posso non chiederti dell'articolo sui "7 fatti da sapere su Star Wars".

(Ride NdR) Be', molta roba è nuova anche per i fan accaniti di Star Wars e molta è utile per introdurre Star Wars a chi non lo conosce. Quindi quando prepari 7 punti di domanda e risposta su Star Wars e vuoi includere il maggior numero di persone possibile, devi parlare sia delle cose più basilari che di quelle più interessanti e dettagliate. E questo è quello che abbiamo cercato di fare con questo post, ottenendo anche un buon feedback. Anche i fan più sfegatati di Star Wars sono rimasti sorpresi da alcuni fatti rivelati in questo pezzo.

Prima di lasciarti, c'è un saggio messaggio che vorresti mandare ai nostri lettori e ai tuoi fan italiani?

Il messaggio più sincero che posso condividere con i fan italiani è che noi adoriamo venire in Italia. Adoriamo la cultura e la gente che abbiamo conosciuto brevemente nei nostri pochi show qui. Ci piacerebbe avere una ragione per tornare più spesso! Sfortunatamente la nostra musica non è molto popolare in Italia, quindi se siete dei fan dei "We Are Scientists", per favore ditelo in giro ai vostri amici e parenti. Fate in modo che si interessino e vengano agli spettacoli. Sarebbe un sogno poter spendere la quantità di tempo che spendiamo in Inghilterra, in Italia. Ma per farlo abbiamo bisogno di più fan italiani (ride NdR). Questo è il mio messaggio!
