Quando a rispondere alle nostre domande c'è una leggenda del calibro di Jim Peterik (co-fondatore dei Survivor e co-autore di un pezzo che nemmeno le pietre possono dire di non aver mai sentito come "The Eye of the Tiger") l'emozione è davvero tanta. Lui e Toby Hitchcok sono alle prese con la nuova release di quello che sembrava essere nato come "side-project" e che si è rivelato un fenomeno di grande successo. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato sul nuovo album dei Pride of Lions, "Fearless", in uscita per Frontiers Music, e sui segreti del suo successo!

I Pride of Lions sono la combinazione perfetta di passato e futuro: tu e Toby da soli siete un incredibile cocktail di talento e gusto Hard Rock/A.O.R. Sono curiosa di sapere se le nuove canzoni sono in qualche modo autobiografiche.

Ciao Marilena! Per prima cosa ti ringrazio per le belle parole. Siamo molto orgogliosi di "Fearless". A dirla tutta la maggior parte delle mie canzoni riflettono la mia vita e le mie esperienze nel momento in cui mi metto a scriverle... penso che le canzoni abbiano un'anima più vera quando le vivi in questo modo. Altre invece, sono una sorta di riflessione sul passato. Per esempio "All I See Is You" racconta della prima volta in cui vidi la mia futura moglie Karen. Era il 1968, e lei se ne stava lì, in fila, aspettando di vedere la nostra band preferita (The Turtles) con alcune amiche davvero carine... ma lei in particolare catturò la mia attenzione come un magnete; le altre parvero svanire nel nulla, perché tutto ciò che riuscivo a vedere era lei.

Oggi ci troviamo a vivere in un mondo digitalizzato, dove sembra che il distacco tra le persone smorzi un po' anche la capacità di esprimere emozioni che ha sempre caratterizzato autori come te. Come pensi che reagiscano i più giovani al tipo di musica che proponi?

Credo fermamente che dei buoni testi e dei messaggi positivi possano raggiungere le persone di qualsiasi età. Me ne accorgo di continuo quando vedo come reagiscono le persone ascoltando pezzi che ho scritto in passato, e succede anche con le nuove generazioni! Penso ad "Eye Of The Tiger", "The Search Is Over", "Hold On Loosely", "Vehicle", perfino "Even Ever Since the World Began"... tutte risuonano con la stessa intensità, che si tratti di ragazzi o persone anziane, e spero di cuore che il mio messaggio di positività continui a raggiungere più persone possibili.

Secondo te, quali sono gli ingredienti magici per un album A.O.R. di successo nel 2017?

Penso che tutto parta da un'eccellente melodia; poi direi dei testi con un significato profondo, passaggi spettacolari e una produzione importante. I pezzi dovrebbero legarsi tra loro sull'album! Vedi, io vengo da un'epoca in cui l'abitudine era quella di ascoltare interi album tutti d'un fiato: prendi per esempio "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", o "Love" dei Pet Sounds o "In the Court of the Crimson King", "Vital Signs" (Survivor)... in questi album tutti i pezzi sembrano legati a doppio filo.

Anche i pezzi del nuovo album sono davvero molto belli. Ci racconti la storia dietro "Silent Music"?

Ti ringrazio. Questa canzone piace molto anche a me e a Toby. Tra l'altro l'abbiamo suonata insieme a "All I See Is You" al mio World Stage show proprio la scorsa settimana. La canzone parla di qualcosa che ho vissuto di recente. Avevo appena scoperto che mio figlio Colin e sua moglie Meredith aspettavano il loro primo bambino, così io e Karen (la moglie, ndr.) siamo usciti in veranda, con un bicchiere di vino, e abbiamo iniziato a ballare... ma non c'era nessuna musica. Solo quella nella nostra mente.

Nel nuovo video che sta girando su YouTube, "All I See Is You", abbiamo il piacere di ammirare la tua sempre maravigliosa collezione di chitarre. Toglimi una curiosità: le disegni tu?

Ebbene sì. Sono un grande collezionista non solo di chitarre vintage ma anche di chitarre "artistiche" che do una mano a realizzare. Con Cat Clausen abbiamo creato I modelli Bad Ass Bee e la Pin-up Les Paul. Con Marty Bell abbiamo creato la Tiger Les Paul e la Tiger J200.

Pride of Lions era nato come un side-project, ma a quanto pare state continuando a produrre materiale eccellente e a suonare live... forse è il caso di non chiamarlo più "side project", che dici?

La gente probabilmente non gli aveva dato credito quando abbiamo pubblicato il disco d'esordio nel 2003... ma dopo 6 album, e una serie incalcolabile di date live, penso che gli abbiamo dimostrato ampiamente quanto avessero torto! (ride, ndr.)

"Freedom Of The Night" è stata scritta in collaborazione con Hal Butler, tastierista e collega di Jimi Jamison. Possiamo considerarla una dedica a Jimi?

Assolutamente. Questo è un tribute allo spirito del grande Jimi Jamison. La melodia di questa canzone è stata l'ultima cosa che Hal ha suonato per lui prima che scomparisse tragicamente.

Hitchcock ha dichiarato il suo entusiasmo nel registrare le 12 canzoni dell'album, tanto che gli ci sono voluti solo due giorni a finire le sue parti in studio! Con quale di queste ha avuto un vero e proprio colpo di fulmine?

Fortunatamente - grazie a Dio - gli sono piaciute tutte! Ma quando ha cominciato a cantare "Fearless" ha davvero preso il volo. Si capiva che la stava sentendo proprio sua. Lo stesso è successo con "Everlasting love"... avevo le lacrime agli occhi quando ha finito.

Sul Vostro sito si legge "New show dates coming soon". Ma in Italia, lo farete un passaggio?

Abbiate fede, ancora un po' di pazienza! (ride, ndr.)

Questa era l'ultima domanda Jim. Grazie per il tuo tempo, vuoi lasciare un messaggio ai lettori di SpazioRock a ai tuoi fans italiani?

Io e l'Italia abbiamo una bellissima storia d'amore. Adoro la passione nella vostra gente e la bellezza della vostra terra. Sono sempre molto ispirato a scrivere cose nuove quando mi capita di essere in tour dalle vostre parti. Grazie ITALIA per il tuo supporto e ispirazione!

When a huge rockstar, a true legend, is about to answer our questions, a lot of pressure and excitement comes in... Please welcome Mr. Jim Peterik, (co-founder of Survivor and co-author of one of the most known songs in rock history - "The Eye of the Tiger"). He and Toby Hitchcock are promoting the new release of what appeared to be born as a "side project" and that turned out to be a very successful phenomenon. Here's what he told us about the new album of Pride of Lions, "Fearless", out for Frontiers Music, and about the secrets of his success!

Pride Of Lions is the perfect combination of history and future. You and Toby Hitchcock alone guarantee an unbelievable mixture of talent and Hard Rock/A.O.R taste. Are the songs on this new album autobiographical, somehow?

Hi Marilena! Thank you for the kind words. We are very proud of how this album "Fearless" turned out. Actually most of my songs reflect my life and what I may be going through at the time I write them. Songs are much more real when you have lived them. Some of them are just reflections of the past. "All I See Is You" is about the first time I met my future wife, Karen, as she stood in line to see our favorite band back in 1968, The Turtles. She was standing there with 3 ultra cute girl friends but she drew me in like a magnet. All the other girls seemed to disappear. Then all I could see was her!

We are living in a digital world where it's sad to aknowledge how feelings are hard to come by. How do you think young people react to your kind of music?

I am of the belief that a good lyric and message seeps into people of any age. I get feedback all of the time at how a lyric I wrote, or co-wrote, affects even the brand new generation. "Eye Of The Tiger", "The Search Is Over", "Hold On Loosely", "Vehicle", even "Ever Since The World Began" all resonate with young and old. I keep writing in the hopes that my message of positivity gets through.

According to you, which are the main and successful components for a good A.O.R. album in 2017?

I believe it starts with a good song to me - that means a memorable melody - meaningful lyrics, great chord changes and powerful production. Also, the songs should hand together on the album, not sound like piecemeal. I come from an age when we listened to entire albums in one sitting, like a play. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", o "Love" dei Pet Sounds o "In the Court of the Crimson King", "Vital Signs" all hang together like one piece.

I love the amazing songs on this album: can you give us some kind of backstory on how "Silent Music" was born?

Thank You! It is one of me and Toby's favorites as well. In fact we just performed that song and "All I See Is You" at my big World Stage show last week. It's something I lived recently where I was dancing with Karen in an unusually good mood after we heard that my son Colin and his wife Meredith were expecting their first child. We were out on the deck of our house, had little wine and just started dancing. There was no music playing, just the song in our head.

The video of "All I See Is You" is out on YouTube and, as always, we can see Jim has an amazing collection of guitars. Does he design them personally?

I am a big collector of not only vintage guitars but also "art guitars" which I do have a hand in designing. With fine artist Cat Clausen we have created the Bad Ass Bee and the Pin-up Les Paul. With Marty Bell we have created the Tiger Les Paul and the Tiger J200.

Pride of Lions was born as a side project but you keep touring and writing... it seems to me you reached a point where we cannot consider this a "side-project" anymore. Do you agree with me?

People thought this would be a project band when we put out our debut disk on 2003. After 6 albums and countless tour dates, I guess we proved them wrong! (he laughs, Ed.)

"Freedom Of The Night" was written with Hal Butler, who used to play the keyboards with Jimi Jamison. Is there some kind of dedication in that song?

We have dedicate this song to the spirit of the great Jimi Jamison. The seed of this song was the last thing Hal played for him before he tragically passed away.

Hitchcock said he was excited by the ease with which the songs took shape singing 12 vocal parts in two days. Which was his "love at first sight song"?

He loved them all - thank God - but when he started singing the song "Fearless" he went into overdrive, I could tell he was totally feeling it. Same with "Everlasting" alove. I had tears in my eyes when he finished.

Hold on... loosely! (he laughs, Ed.)

This was the last question. Would you like to leave a message to your Italian fans and to SpazioRock readers?

Italy and I have a kind of love affair. I love the passion of the people and the beauty of the country. I am always inspired to write when i tour there. And they seem to love what I do... what's not to love about that. Thank you ITALY for your support and inspiration!
