Ciao Marcus e benvenuto su SpazioRock.it! Questa è la prima volta che avete la possibilità di parlare ai nostri lettori, vuoi presentarci la band ed il progetto?
Abbiamo appena pubblicato il nostro quarto album,
"Mesmer" per la gioia dei nostri fan. Lo abbiamo registrato alla fine dello scorso anno al Barber Shop Studios, New Jersey, con David Bendeth. Con "Mesmer" abbiamo avuto molto più tempo rispetto ai lavori precedenti per preparare e curare le incisioni, il che ha contribuito a far si che questi pezzi scorrano in maniera più naturale.
"Mesmer" è il vostro quarto album, che cosa significa questo titolo?
Il titolo si ispira al personaggio di Franz Mesmer, il fisico tedesco noto per la teoria del magnetismo animale. Questa teoria sostiene che tutti gli oggetti animati ed inanimati siano collegati e si trasferiscano energia fra loro. La sua teoria con il tempo si è dimostrata falsa, ma questo concetto per noi rimane interessante e così lo abbiamo scelto per il titolo.
Siete una band con un autentica forza emotiva e questo si riflette nei vostri testi articolati. Qual è la fonte di questa forza?
Crediamo che quando si utilizza una piattaforma comunicativa come la musica, è importante diffondere qualcosa di positivo nel mondo. Che si comunichi spinti da rabbia o positività, nella nostra musica c'è spesso un tema di fondo comune, ovvero la speranza.
"Citizen" è il primo singolo del nuovo album. E' una canzone forte, convincente e onesta, qual è il messaggio che volete trasmettere con questo pezzo?
"Citizen" parla della corruzione proveniente da diversi gruppi che violano della privacy delle persone. Ma quando questi gruppi vengono denunciati, sono gli informatori a venire puniti. Vogliamo che la gente sappia cosa si nasconde dietro alle porte chiuse, in modo che anche loro possano esprimersi sentendosi al sicuro in questo mondo digitale.
"Solar" è una canzone molto energica. Cosa ci puoi raccontare della genesi di questo brano?
"Solar" è un pezzo strumentale ed è stato uno dei primissimi demo che ricordo di aver sentito per "Mesmer". Non appena lo abbiamo ascoltato, ci siamo trovati tutti d'accordo. Josh era ispirato al punto da aver scritto i testi per questo album in circa trenta minuti. I testi trattano di come la specie umana stia esaurendo le risorse naturali della terra con l'aspettativa di un altro luogo dove andare quando tutto questo sarà esaurito. L'uomo spesso vede se stesso come il centro dell'universo, quando in realtà è solo un granello di sabbia nel tempo.
"Colourwave" è una canzone che parla di creazione. Qual è il colore che rappresenta al meglio il vostro sound inimitabile?
Per quanto mi riguarda credo che siano il colore rosso e viola. Non mi ero soffermato su questo punto prima d'ora, ma penso ci sia un forte contrasto tra i due colori. Il rosso è forte e brillante, mentre il viola è profondo e un minaccioso.
Parlando di "Paragon": è un pezzo molto intenso, ma sofferto; infatti sembra che la morte sia un tema ricorrente in questo album, perché?
Durante tutto il processo di scrittura di Mesmer, alcuni di noi hanno attraversato momenti molto difficili, tra cui la morte della bisnonna di Josh e naturalmente di Tom Searle (membro della band metalcore inglese Architects). Con le relazioni andate in frantumi, temi come perdita e la morte hanno trovato inevitabilmente spazio nel percorso del nuovo l'album. E' stato terapeutico scrivere di questi episodi, di queste tematiche, ma spero che la gente possa, attraverso questo, riflettere riguardo questi argomenti estremamente personali e vedere che non sono soli.
Il mese di Maggio sarete impegnati nell"Intuition Tour". Quali sono le canzoni del vostro ultimo album, che preferite suonare dal vivo e perchè?
Ci sono tante canzoni estremamente differenti fra loro. Sono elettrizzato all'idea di suonare. Suonare nuovi pezzi è un brivido. Abbiamo suonato "Intuition" per la prima volta al Unify Gathering e la cosa mi ha dato una grande sferzata di energia. Sono esaltato quando suono "Zero-One", perché sprigiona energia, ma anche canzoni come "Solar" saranno eccezionali perché daranno un bel contrasto ai brani più pesanti.
Inizierete presto il tour europeo, il 2 luglio, sarete headliner al Dissonance Festival 2017, a Milano. Come ti senti ad esibirti in Italia? Quali sono le tue aspettative?
Sono molto felice all'idea di suonare in Italia ancora una volta! La prima volta che ho suonato in Italia è stato folle, gli italiani sono davvero appassionati di musica! Essere headliner al Dissonance Festival è estremamente eccitante, daremo il 110% e quindi ci aspettiamo lo stesso da voi a Milano!

Hi Marcus and welcome to SpazioRock.it! This is the very first time you have the chance to speak to our readers, how would you better introduce them this project of yours?
We just released our fourth album, "Mesmer" as a surprise to our fans. It was recorded at the end of last year at Barber Shop Studios in New Jersey with David Bendeth. We had a lot more time to prepare and grow into the recording of "Mesmer" compared to previous records which helped these songs flow naturally.
"Mesmer" is your fourth album, how did you end up chosing this title? And what does the album's cover represent?
The title came from the name Franz Mesmer. He was a German physicist who had came up with the theory of Animal Magnetism. It claimed that all animated and inanimate objects were connected and transferred energy between each other. It was later proven to be false but this was just an interesting concept to us so we chose it for the title.
You're a band with an authentic emotional strength and this reflects in your sophisticated lyrics. What is the source of it all?
We believe that when given a platform to speak such as music, it's important to spread something positive into the world. Whether it be through anger or positivity, there is often an underlying theme of hope in our music.
"Citizen" is the first single of your new album. It's a strong song, compelling and honest, what is the message you want to transmit with it?
"Citizen" speaks of the corruption coming from different groups who prey on the privacy of the people. But when these groups are found out, it's the whistle-blowers who are punished. We want people to be aware of the things that go on behind closed doors so that they too can speak out and feel safe in this digital world.
"Solar" is a very energetic tune. What can you tell us about the genesis of this song?
The instrumental for "Solar" was one of the very first demos I remember hearing for "Mesmer". As soon as we heard it, we all loved it. Josh was inspired so much, he wrote the lyrics for this one in about thirty minutes. The lyrics touch on man-kinds will to drain the earth of its natural resources with some expectation that there will be somewhere else to go when it's all gone. Man often see's itself as the centre of the universe when in reality we are just a speck in time.
"Colourwave" is a song about creation. Which colour is the most representative of your inimitable sound?
For me I guess it would be red and purple. I haven't given it a whole lot of though before but there's a strong contrast between the two. Red is harsh and bright whilst purple is deep and somewhat brooding.
Talking about "Paragon": it's very intense but heartbreaking! It seems to me death is a recurring theme in this album, why is that?
Throughout the process of writing Mesmer, a few us went through many difficult things including the passing of Josh's great-grandmother and of course Tom Searle. With relationships falling apart on top of this, themes of loss and death were inevitably going to find their way onto the album. It was therapeutic to write about these things but hopefully people going through similar things can connect to these more personal subjects and see they're not alone.
In May you will be very busy with "The Intuition Tour". What are the songs, from your latest release, that you will prefer to play live? Why?
There are so many different songs I'm excited to play. Playing new songs is always such a rush. We played "Intuition" for the very first time at Unify Gathering back home and it gave me a huge burst of energy. I'm very excited to play "Zero-One" as it has so much energy but songs like "Solar" will be a nice contrast to the heavier stuff.
Then you will leave for the European leg of the tour and, on the 2nd of July, you will headline the Dissonance Festival 2017, in Milan. How do you feel about performing in Italy? What are your expectations?
I'm so keen to play in Italy again! The first time I played there was insane, people are very passionate about music in Italy! To be headlining Dissonance Festival is extremely exciting, we're going to give 110% so we expect the same from Milan!
