Iniziamo subito presentando i Priest e il vostro disco "New Flesh". Quando è nata l'idea di questa band?
L'idea è venuta fuori a Berlino intorno alla fine del 2010 e successivamente, nel 2012 abbiamo creato la demo di quella che sarebbe poi diventata la canzone "The Pit". Poi siamo stati presi da altre avventure e il progetto Priest è stato, come dire, congelato. Nel 2015 abbiamo trovato il tempo di riprendere ciò che avevamo fatto e ricominciare a scrivere e registrare, abbiamo infatti creato nuovi demo e allo stesso tempo abbiamo iniziato a creare l'aspetto visuale e l'intera filosofia della band.
Questo è un aspetto decisamente interessante e di cui ci piacerebbe sapere di più. Parlaci della nascita della band e in particolare delle maschere, dei simboli e di tutto l'impianto visivo che avete creato.
Sapevamo dall'inizio che sarebbe stata una band con un'estetica molto teatrale ma ci è volute un bel po' di tempo prima che i costumi che vedete adesso fossero completati. È stata una combinazione, ben bilanciata, di diverse fonti di ispirazione. Possiamo dire che è un mix di Hellraiser, Terminator, Eraserhead e vari fumetti di supereroi insieme a band come i The Klinik o gli Skinny Puppy. I simboli rappresentano i tre elementi principali secondo l'alchimia (Tria Prima), in cui ciascuna delle parti è ugualmente importante per raggiungere la completezza.
Il principale compositore delle nostre canzoni ha sempre avuto una passione per gli strumenti elettronici, già da piccolo, e ha scritto canzoni su un Atari 1040 prima di essere in grado di comporre con qualsiasi altro tipo di strumento a corde. Certamente la musica che ti influenza maggiormente è quella con cui si cresce e appunto nel nostro caso si tratta delle hit anni '80 e '90 e della scena tecno/elettronica, prevalentemente britannica. Semplicemente volevamo fare un po' i nostalgici con questo disco e abbiamo cercato di registrare con le stesse tecniche di allora.
Avete lavorato con un bel team di produttori per questo album, Alpha dei Ghost, Niklas Berglöf e Magnus Lindberg. Com'è stato lavorare con loro? Come hanno contribuito al risultato finale?
Alpha è un bravissimo produttore, con la grande abilità di individuare gli elementi più importanti in una canzone. Cerca sempre di spingerci a fare meglio e ha costantemente nuove idee, a volte anche un po' strane. È stato indispensabile per le registrazioni di "New Flesh". Niklas invece è un maestro nel trovare la giusta atmosfera sonora per ogni canzone, ha aggiunto quel qualcosa in più che serviva al disco. Magnus ha portato le registrazioni davvero su un altro livello in modo che si possano apprezzare i dettagli e la ricchezza del suono del disco. Sono molto grato a tutti e tre.
Parlaci della musica che vi ha ispirato per la composizione di "New Flesh".
Per la maggior parte musica pop e tecno ma anche musica classica come Bach e Beethoven. È un mix di stili diversi ma ciò che è più importante e su cui ci piace focalizzare sono le melodie.
Leggendo i vostri testi sembra che il mondo dei Priest sia un luogo oscuro e un po' losco, dove può accadere qualsiasi cosa. Cosa vi ha ispirato per quanto riguarda i testi?
Parliamo ora dei video: avete recentemente rilasciato quello della canzone "Vaudeville" e sembra essere molto in linea con i clip precedenti, "The Cross", "History In Black" e "The Pit" e le atmosfere misteriose e dark, quasi da film dell'orrore. Come sviluppate e realizzate le idee per i video?
Abbiamo lavorato con registi diversi per ognuno dei video fatti finora, quindi il processo è stato diverso per ciascuno di essi. Devo dire che nella band abbiamo parecchia esperienza riguardo la produzione audiovisiva quindi abbiamo comunicato costantemente con i vari registi dall'inizio alla fine. Vogliamo creare un'immagine misteriosa e non mostrare troppo per lasciare che sia il pubblico a usare la propria immaginazione. Amiamo fare questi video e penso che continueremo a lavorare in questa direzione.
Avete già delle idee per quello che riguarderà l'aspetto visivo delle vostre performance dal vivo? Ci saranno degli scenari particolari sul palco insieme alla vostra presenza, già molto iconografica di suo?
All'inizio faremo molto affidamento sull'estetica stessa della band, aggiungendo luci tetre e cose così, ma abbiamo molte idee ad esempio su come integrare elementi visivi e laser, quando nel futuro avremo le risorse per farlo. Nella mia mente ci sono già delle idee che renderanno grandiose le nostre performance dal vivo.
A questo proposito, avete già in programma di fare un tour europeo nel prossimo futuro?
Ebbene si, speriamo nella prossima primavera. Ci stiamo lavorando!

Let's start by presenting your band Priest and your record "New Flesh". How long had you been considering starting a brand new project?
The idea surfaced in Berlin in the end of 2010 and we did a demo back in 2012 that would become "The Pit". Then other adventures happened and Priest was put in a cryotank. In 2015 we had the time to thaw it and started to record more demos as we developed the visual appearance and the philosophy for the band.
We are definitely curious do discover more about it. Why don't you tell us something about the birth of the band, the masks, the symbols and the visual concept in particular?
We knew from the beginning that it should be a band with theatrical esthetics, but it took a long while before the costumes you see today were finished. It was a balance act between different sources of inspiration. You can say it´s a mix of Hellraiser, The Terminator, Eraserhead and variuos superhero comics along with bands like The Klinik and Skinny Puppy. The symbols portray the three main principles in alchemy (Tria Prima), where each part is equally important to achieve wholeness.
Let's focus on the music now. In my opinion, the first element that comes up to attention is the massive use of electronic sound, something that reminds me of the '80s and the golden age of synths and keyboards. Why did you choose this kind of sound?
The main songwriter have fiddled around with electronic equipment since early age and wrote songs on an Atari 1040 before he could play any string instrument. The music that influences you the most is the music you grow up with - in our case it was '80-'90ies hits and the (mostly British) techno/electronica scene. We simply wanted to get nostalgic on this album and tried to record in the same way they did back then.
It looks like you worked with quite a team to produce this record, Alpha from Ghost, Niklas Berglöf and Magnus Lindberg. How was working with them? How did they contribute to the final result of the record?
Alpha is a great producer with an ability to find whats most important in a song. He´s always pushing it to be better and always have the pocket full of new and sometimes weird ideas. He was invaluable for the recording of New Flesh. Niklas is a master at finding the right sonic milieu for a song, he added the extra flavours and texture the album needed. Magnus really took the recordings to another level so we all can enjoy the details and richness of the album forever. Thank you guys!
What sort of music inspired you the composition of "New Flesh"?
Mostly pop music and techno but also classical music like Bach, and Beethoven. It´s a mix of different styles but we like to put good melodies in the center.
Going through the lyrics, Priest's world looks like a dark, shady place, where anything can happen. What are the sources of inspiration for your lyrics?
Correct! On the first record we wanted to start at the bottom. When you´re at the lowest point in your life, how do you gain power and inspiration to continue? It´s rooted in personal experiences and also the political climate that surrounds us today, where clowns can rise to power by handing out word-candy. "New Flesh" depicts a struggle to survive - both internally and externally. I hope people in difficult situations will gain power from the songs. In the future the lyrics will be more sci-fi oriented combined with further exploration of the human psyche.
Let's talk about videos: you recently released the video for the song "Vaudeville" and it is very much in line with your previous ones, "The Cross", "History In Black" and "The Pit": obscure and mysterious atmospheres, almost "horror movie" like. How do you develop and carry out your ideas for the videos?
We have worked with different directors on each video, so the process looks a bit different. We have a lot of knowledge on filmmaking within the band, so we communicate closely with the directors until final cut. We want to create a mysterious image and not show "too much" in order to let the audience use their imagination too. We love making these films and will continue doing so.
Do you already have any visual ideas for your live performances? Will your shows feature particular settings, together with your iconic appearance?
In the beginning we will rely heavily on the bands aesthetics itself along with gloomy lights, but we have ideas to integrate visuals and lasers in the future when we have resources to do so. In my mind everything will be rather grandiose.
Speaking of this, do you have any plans for a European tour anytime soon?
Yes, hopefully this spring! We´re working on it.
