Ciao Alex, e benvenuto su SpazioRock. Stiamo attraversando un momento molto difficile, quindi prima di tutto come stai?
Grazie per l'intervista e per il vostro sostegno. Stiamo bene e parliamo regolarmente tra di noi. La situazione è ovviamente difficile e insolita per tutti noi, ma la cosa più importante è che siamo tutti in salute, così come le nostre famiglie e i nostri cari.
Ci sono molte ragioni per cui i supergruppi nascono: perché hai formato i Voodoo Gods? Ti piace l'etichetta di "all star band"? Pensi che questa definizione sia calzante?
I Voodoo Gods sono nati nel 2001 e allora era solo una band composta da amici. La vedo ancora così, non siamo un supergruppo: siamo solo amici che suonano musica insieme.
È passato circa mezzo decennio da quando è stato pubblicato "Anticipation For Blood Leveled In Darkness". Quanto tempo è occorso per preparare il nuovo album e com'è stato il processo di scrittura?
Mi ci sono voluti più di due anni per completare le nuove canzoni. La maggior parte sono state scritte nel 2016, ho riorganizzato alcune parti e ci piacevano tre diversi mix per questo album. Ci sono stati anche alcuni problemi legali, non abbiamo avuto un contratto discografico per due anni. La melodia è sempre presente, è la base di tutto. Non ho mai una visione reale dell'insieme, la musica è un'emozione, qualcosa che sento e di cui mi nutro. Cerco sempre di realizzare ciò che sento nella mia testa, questo è il mio approccio. Di solito registro una versione demo di tutti i brani con batteria e chitarre. Poi chiamo Jacek Hiro e buttiamo giù tutte le parti di chitarra fino a quando non mi sento soddisfatto. Tutto questo accade nei miei Voodoo Gates Studios. Hiro poi vola a casa in Polonia e ritorna dopo aver memorizzato ogni singolo arrangiamento. A questo punto registriamo le chitarre ritmiche e poi Jean Baudin e
Victor Smolski incidono rispettivamente le linee di basso e gli assoli. Jean normalmente ha totale libertà perché non voglio limitare le sue fonti di suono. Almeno fintanto che c'è abbastanza spazio per il basso e nessuna perdita di aggressività.
Definire "The Divinity Of Blood" soltanto come un LP death metal potrebbe risultare riduttivo. Possiamo affermare che questo disco riesce a fondere in modo omogeneo le diverse anime dei musicisti coinvolti?
Forse lo fa, ma per una band come i Voodoo Gods è di vitale importanza saper suonare qualsiasi cosa. Con questa formazione non ci sono più limiti né confini al nostro approccio musicale: siamo fortunati ad avere musicisti che possono suonare praticamente di tutto.
Ogni canzone ha una sua peculiarità, ma in alcune tracce la classica patina heavy metal è molto più importante ("Isa", "Ritual Of Thron"). In che misura la presenza di Andy LaRocque dietro la console è collegata a tale scelta stilistica?
Andy LaRocque è il nostro produttore e mentore dal 2014 e siamo diventati davvero buoni amici proprio sei anni fa. Lui sa esattamente come vogliamo suonare e cosa è importante per la nostra musica. Supporta le nostre idee e cerca di realizzare tutto ciò che vogliamo integrare nel nostro sound. L'heavy metal classico ci ha influenzato tutti ovviamente. Andy LaRoque è per me un membro a pieno titolo dei VoodooGods e non lavorerei mai con nessun altro.
Forse in omaggio al moniker, si percepisce una componente tribale nel vostro sound. Sei d'accordo?
Sì, adoro alcuni elementi di batteria nella musica africana e nella World Music. Elaboro alcune di queste influenze nelle mie composizioni.
Il full length inizia con l'imponente "Rise Of The Antichrist", un mid-tempo davvero sulfureo. Nel mondo di oggi, chi l'Anticristo spazzerebbe via con la sua furia rigeneratrice?
Forse la razza umana o la comunità dei fedeli e la confessione della Chiesa.
In altri passaggi, invece, possiamo ascoltare intermezzi acustici e scale orientali: penso a canzoni come "From Necromancy To Paraphilia" e "Menace To God". È solo un modo di sperimentare? O piuttosto il desiderio di emancipare il metal estremo da alcuni stereotipi?
No, ma adoro le scale classiche (come quelle di
Yngwie Malmsteen) e le chitarre acustiche. Il tocco orientale è influenzato anche dal nostro bassista e da Victor. Amano le scale e i toni "antichi".
I temi lirici sono legati a una visione del mondo anticristiana, ma "Forever!" è diversa dalle altre canzoni. Puoi parlarcene?
È un omaggio a coloro che amiamo e onoriamo, anche a quelli che hanno perso qualcosa e risorgono dalle proprie ceneri.
Nella band ci sono due grandi cantanti, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher e Seth Van De Loo, ciascuno con il proprio stile. Quali sono i vantaggi e gli svantaggi, se ce ne sono, di una tale convivenza?
Nel metal estremo non puoi imbrogliare; se provi a fare qualcosa in tal senso, la gente lo noterà. Questo è il motivo per cui usiamo due cantanti: possiamo combinare growl e pesantezza melodica.
Nel corso degli anni, molti grandi artisti hanno fatto parte dei Voodoo Gods: Nergal, Mike Browning, Tony Norman. Chi vorresti avere di nuovo? E perché?
Presto saremo sette membri, ma non cambieremo nulla. Questa è la migliore formazione possibile per i Voodoo Gods. Forse qualche apparizione come ospite in un festival con degli ex membri sarebbe divertente. Celebreremo il nostro ventesimo anniversario l'anno prossimo.
Indipendentemente dall'attuale emergenza sanitaria, sarà difficile portare i Voodoo Gods in tour considerando gli impegni dei membri con le loro altre band?
Facciamo del nostro meglio, dal momento che tutti noi siamo amici è molto più facile organizzarsi e adattarsi agli impegni altrui. Ho elaborato un nuovo concetto per i nostri spettacoli dal vivo e, come ho detto, saremo presto in sette. L'idea è quella di suonare più show e avere una presenza dal vivo costante, per cui recentemente abbiamo concordato una collaborazione con un'agenzia. Avevamo già in programma alcuni spettacoli per luglio 2020. Ora dobbiamo aspettare e vedere. Una cosa che faremo non appena questo brutto periodo finirà, sarà quella di registrare il nostro primo live europeo su DVD e Blu Ray.
In un possibile tour futuro, l'Italia sarà nella vostra agenda?
Certo, adoriamo l'Italia. La città natale di mia madre è molto vicina a Sondrio.

Hi guys, and welcome to SpazioRock. We're going through such a difficult time, so first of all how are you doing?
Thanks for the interview and your support. The guys in Voodoo Gods are ok; we talk regular and the situation is of course hard and unusual for all of us. Most important for us; we are all healthy as well as our families and loved ones.
There are many reasons why superbands usually come into existence: why did you start Voodoo Gods? How do you like the "all star band" label and do you feel you fit in this definition?
We started Voodoo Gods in 2001; back then it was just a band made of friends. I still see it that way, we are not a superband; we are just friends playing music together.
It's been about half a decade since "Anticipation For Blood Leveled In Darkness" was released. How long has been the new album in the works and how was the writing process like?
Well, it took me more than two years to complete the new songs; most of these songs were written in 2016, I rearranged few parts and we did like 3 different mixes for this album. There were also few legal issues, we had no record deal for 2 years. There is always the melody; the melody is the base for everything. I never have a real vision, the music is an emotion, something I feel and feed on. I always try to realize what I hear in my head; that is my approach. Well, I usually record a demo version of all songs with just drums and guitars. Then I get together with Hiro and we arrange all guitar parts until I am happy. All this happens in my Voodoo Gates Studios. Hiro flies back to Poland and returns, after he memorized all arrangements. That is when we record all rhythm guitars. Once this is done, Jean and Victor get the music to record solos and bass lines. Jean normally has total freedom with the bass lines, because I do not want to limit all his sound sources; as long there is enough space for it and no loss of aggression and heavyness !!
Defining "The Divinity Of Blood" just a death metal LP could be an understatement. Can we assert that this record manages to merge in a homogeneous way the different souls of the musicians involved?
Maybe it does; but for a band like Voodoo Gods it is vital, that we are able to play anything. With this line-up, there are no more limits , no more boundaries to our musical approach; now we are blessed with musicians, who can play pretty much everything.
Each song has its own peculiarity, but in some of the tracks the classic heavy metal coat is much more prominent ("Isa", "Ritual Of Thron"). In what measure is Andy LaRocque's presence behind the console related to this?
Andy LaRocque has been our producer and mentor since 2014 and we became really good friends in early 2014. Andy knows exactly how we wanna sound and what is important for our music. He supports our ideas and tries to realize everything we wanna integrate in our music. Classic heavy Metal influenced us all!!! Andy LaRocque is for me a full member of Voodoo Gods and I would never work with anybody else.
Perhaps in tribute to your moniker, there is a tribal component in your sound. Do you agree with this?
Yes, I love certain drum elements in African and World music; I process some of those influences in my compositions.
The full length begins with the massive "Rise Of The Antichrist", a truly sulphureous mid-tempo. In nowadays world, who would the Antichrist wipe out with his regenerative fury?
Maybe the human race or the faith community and confession of the church.
In other passages, on the other hand, we can hear acoustic interludes and oriental scales: I think of songs like "From Necromancy To Paraphilia" and "Menace To God". Is it just a way to experiment? Or rather the desire to remove extreme metal from certain stereotypes?
No, but I love classic scales like in Malmsteen and acoustic guitars. The oriental touch is also influenced by our bass player and Victor. They love the "Ancient" scales and tones.
The lyrical themes are linked to an anti-Christian worldview, but "Forever!" is different from the other songs. Can you tell us about it?
A tribute to the ones we love and honor; also to the ones who lost something and rise from their ashes!!
In the band features two great singers, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher and Seth Van De Loo, each of them with his own style. What are the advantages and disadvantages, if there are any, of such a coexistence?
In extreme metal you can't cheat; people will notice, if you try to do something, which is not in your comfort zone; that is the reason why we use two vocalists. In this constellation, we can cover extreme growls as well as melodic heavyness.
Through the years, many great artists have been part of this band: Nergal, Mike Browning, Tony Norman. Who would you like to line up again? And why?
We will be soon seven members, but we will change nothing. This is the best lineup possible for Voodoo Gods. Maybe some guest appearance on some festival with ex-members would be fun. We celebrate our 20th anniversary next year.
Regardless of the current health emergency, is it going to be difficult to take Voodoo Gods on the road, considering the members' touring commitments with their other bands?
We just do our best, since all of us are friends, it is much easier to organize and adjust to each others schedule. I worked out a new concept for our live shows and we will be soon seven members. We plan to play more shows and have a constant live presence, therefore we recently agreed on a collaboration with a tour agency. We had already few shows scheduled for July 2020. Now we have to wait and see. One thing we will do as soon as this shit is over; we will record our first European live show on DVD and Blu Ray.
In a possible future tour, will Italy be on your agenda? And from the musical point of view, which are the Italian bands that you appreciate the most?
Of course, we love Italy!! My Mum's hometown is very close to Sondrio.
