Il countdown è iniziato. Il nuovo album dei Port Noir è in uscita questo venerdì. Come ti senti?
Mi sento semplicemente alla grande, ad essere sincero. E' davvero entusiasmante pubblicare l'intero album, fino ad ora siamo usciti con quattro canzoni, e c'è ancora un sacco di roba che vogliamo far vedere a tutti! Già, quattro giorni da oggi, è fantastico!
Questo album è davvero particolare se consideriamo il sound. In una singola canzone puoi sentire allo stesso tempo parti hard rock, sfumature pop, riff heavy metal, momenti hip-hop. In questo disco avete creato uno stile davvero eclettico. Come pensi siate cresciuti, considerando tutta la vostra carriera, sotto questo punto di vista?
Non ne sono sicuro, a dire la verità. Questo è una specie di ritorno alle nostre radici ma sempre cercando di essere... contemporanei, attuali. Noi tutti suoniamo da tempo e per diverse ragioni. Abbiamo iniziato con la musica rock naturalmente. Ci abbiamo messo tanto tempo prima di partire con le registrazioni di questo album, abbiamo impiegato tanto tempo ad ascoltare musica, a mostrarci vicendevolmente della musica, mettendo in risalto cosa ci piaceva di ogni singola canzone, poteva essere qualsiasi cosa, o una piccola parte della canzone, o tutta la canzone, o il suono della chitarra o della batteria. Abbiamo provato tante strade ascoltando tanta musica diversa prima di iniziare a costruire questo nuovo sound e abbiamo provato tante diverse canzoni nuove per trovare il giusto e totale concept a livello di sound. Quindi penso che... abbiamo fatto un importante pre-lavoro.
E' stato difficile mettere insieme tutte queste influenze quando eravate nel processo creativo di una canzone?
Vorrei dire che non lo è stato ma... sì, è difficile trovare una giusta combinazione quando ci sono in gioco così tante diverse influenze. Ma quando ci siamo riusciti, penso che abbiamo subito capito che quello era il sound che volevavo e che cercavano. E quel momento è stato quando abbiamo finito la canzone "Young Bloods". E' stata la prima canzone che abbiamo completato e ci siamo sentiti tipo 'Questo è l'inizio di qualcosa di nuovo, di qualcosa di grande nella nostra carriera". Sì, è stato difficile, ma quando è successo è stato naturale.
Quali sono le maggiori differenze tra questo album e quelli precedenti? E, al contrario, quali sono i punti in comune?
Penso che la differenza adesso è che qui non usiamo più le chitarre a 7 corde. Abbiamo due chitarre adesso, una chitarra e un basso. Questo penso sia probabilmente la differenza più grande quando parliamo di sound. Poi anche in termini di influenze... volevamo ridimensionare tutto il carattere metal del nostro sound e, soprattutto, mettere in chiaro che non ci siamo mai proposti dicendo di essere una band che suona musica prog. Questa è una cosa che pensa la gente e come ci etichetta, ma abbiamo cercato di minimizzare tutti questi elementi progressive, abbiamo cercato di creare qualcosa di bello. Non voglio dire progressivo, ma sì è progressivo nel senso originale del termine. Abbiamo cercato di accantonare tutti questi elementi musicali tecnici...
Elementi musicali alla Dream Theater!
Esatto, non abbiamo mai lontanamente somigliato ai Dream Theater. Vogliamo stare lontano da quel genere di musica. Non siamo una band progressive, e non lo siamo mai stati. La gente ci ha etichettato in quel genere perchè credo non riesca ad etichettarci diversamente...
"The New Routine" sembra il titolo di un nuovo inizio. Cosa volevate dire con questo titolo?
Sì, è l'inizio di qualcosa di nuovo per noi, totalmente. Una nuova direzione. E in più speriamo che possa diventare una nuova routine anche per chi ascolta la nostra musica. Vogliamo che questa musica si infili nella loro testa e ogni volta che si svegliano, pensino subito ad ascoltare "The New Routine", sarà una nuova routine nelle loro vite.
Un pelino esagerato, ma ok. Ad ogni modo, c'è qualche relazione tra il titolo e l'artwork dell'album? Mi sembra carta stracciata, o cosa?
Si, è un foglio di alluminio. No, in realtà non c'è alcuna relazione con il titolo. Volevamo solo continuare a proporre qualcosa di pulito e quando è arrivato il momento dell'artwork... questa è una cosa che abbiamo fatto fin dall'inizio, cercare qualcosa di semplice e pulito.
So che voi avevate in mente di fare quest'album da tempo. Per l'occasione avete lavorato con tre grandi nomi Daniel Bergstrand, David Castillo and Lawrence McRory. Come avete diviso il lavoro sotto questo punto di vista?
Sì, questa volta abbiamo lavorato anche con un altro produttore con cui non avevamo mai lavorato prima, David Castillo, che ha lavorato con...
Opeth!
Hobbit?
No Opeth! Mikael Akerfeldt... Non è un hobbit, o almeno credo.
Oh sì, Opeth! Certo. Niente hobbit. In realtà siamo entrati in contatto nel 2013 credo, quando abbiamo pubblicato il nostro prima album "Puls". E' venuto a trovarci dopo uno show chiedendoci se eravamo intenzionati a fare il nostro prossimo album con lui, cosa che non abbiamo fatto. Abbiamo continuato con Daniel in quella occasione. Adesso, con questo album, volevamo provare qualcosa di nuovo, e abbiamo deciso di far riferimento a lui. L'abbiamo chiamato e gli abbiamo chiesto se potesse essere interessato a lavorare con noi sul nostro nuovo album. Gli abbiamo mostrato alcune demo, lui si aspettava sicuramente un album diverso, qualcosa di alternative metal o progressive metal, cosa che non era, o comunque qualcosa di vicino a quello che avevamo proposto in passato. E' stato doppiamente sorpreso, sicuramente sorpreso in positivo dal fatto che non fosse quello che stesse aspettando. Ha trovato qualcosa di diverso da quello che avevamo fatto in passato e ci ha detto "Ok, ci sta, facciamolo". Ci siamo presi del tempo in studio con lui, abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sulla batteria per una settimana e poi, un paio di mesi dopo, siamo tornati in studio per le parti di basso e di chitarra. Abbiamo poi registrato le parti vocali senza di lui. A quel punto, gli abbiamo portato l'album finito per il mixaggio perchè abbiamo davvero apprezzato quello che aveva fatto. Pensiamo lui abbia fatto davvero un lavoro magnifico aiutandoci nel creare il sound che stavamo cercando E... Lawrence McRory si è occupato del mastering. Lui lavora con Daniel.
Avete detto che quest'album è un ritorno alla musica con cui siete cresciuti unita alla musica che vi ispira maggiormente oggi. E' stato difficile trovare il giusto modo per combinare la musica del passato con quella odierna?
Beh, si è difficile perchè siamo tre persone diverse alla ricerca di un terreno comune. Ed è sempre quasi, non dico una lotta, ma comunque dobbiamo mettere in campo diverse opinioni per cercare un cammino da intraprendere. Ascoltiamo cose davvero diverse.
Qual è la tua band o il tuo musicista preferito?
Personalmente ascolto molte cose della Electric Light Orchestra, o anche di una band chiamata Mae o dei Mew. Mi piace ascoltare tanto musica dei vecchi tempi, dal pop degli anni 60' al progressive rock degli anni 70'. Sì, ascolto qualsiasi cosa mi piace. The Reign of Kindo è un'altra band sensazionale, uno stile jaz pop music. Mi piaceva ascoltare dell'hardcore quando avevo 14 anni...
"Old Fashioned" è statoil primo singolo che avete pubblicato per anticipare questo nuovo album. C'è qualche ragione particolare dietro questa scelta?
Sì. E' sempre difficile scegliere la prima canzone che andrai a mostrare a tutti. Sapevamo che l'album sarebbe uscito dopo un paio di mesi, che poi si sono rivelati essere sei in realtà. Ma volevamo pubblicare qualcosa e abbiamo pensato che "Old Fashion" era la giusta combinazione tra il nuovo sound che stavamo proponendo e il vecchio, visto che comunque ci sono elementi "vecchi". E' nel nostro stile classico, anche se alcune persone potrebbero non essere d'accordo con me.
Dimmi la tua canzone preferita dell'album!
Uh. Cambia tutte le volte. Attualmente direi "Young Bloods".
Come vi vedete tra 5 anni?
Sui palchi, non c'è altra storia (ride, NdR). Davvero, vogliamo che questo diventi il nostro lavoro principale. Non è così adesso, ma davvero vogliamo che lo diventi. Faremo di tutto per andare là fuori con il nostro stile e la nostra musica. E se non saremo sul palco per tutto il tempo, almeno spero di vederci in più parti del mondo oltre all'Europa, Stati Uniti o Asia...
L'ultima volta che vi abbiamo visto in Italia è stato due anni fa con i Pain Of Salvation. Quanto dobbiamo aspettare per vedervi di nuovo in Italia? Avete in programma un tour per promuovere questo disco?
Uhm, un po' ma non troppo. Ci sarà un annuncio tra qualche settimana. E c'è uno show in Italia, non a Milano...

Hi Andreas, how are you?
Hello! I'm great, actually!
The countdown has started. Port Noir new album is going to be release this friday! What are your feelings about that?
I'm just feeling great about it, actually. It's so excited to release the whole album, we released four songs so far and there's still so much more on there we want to show to everyone! Yes, four days from now, it's great.
This album is pretty particular in terms of sound. You can hear in the same moment in one single song hard rock parts, pop shades, heavy metal riffs, hip-hop moments. What you have created in this record is a truly eclectic style. How do you think you guys grew up during your career considering this matter?
I'm not sure, to be honest. This is kind a going back to the roots but still trying to be like... comtemporary, to be like in the now. We all have played music for so long and for different reasons. We started play music, rock music in particular of course. I mean we've spent so much time before the recording of this album, we've spent so much time just listening to music, showing music to each other, selling each other what we like in every song... it could be anything, just a small part of a song, the whole song, just a sound, the guitar sound or the drumming sound. We tried many different ways listening diffent music before we started building a new sound and tried with so many different new songs like... finding the whole concept to the sound. So I guess that is... we did a pre-work or whatever very well.
Was it hard to mix all those influences when you built the song?
I would like to say it was not, but... because it's hard to find a good combination of so many different influences but... Once we got there, I think we knew very well that this is the sound we wanted, this is the sound we looked for, and that was when we finished the song "Young Bloods". It was like the first song that we finished and we felt like 'This is the start of something new, of something cool in our career'. Yes it was hard, but when we got there it just felt natural.
What are the main differences between this record and the previous one? On the contrary, what are the similarities?
I guess that the difference is that we are not using no more 7-string guitars now. And also we have two guitars back then, now we have one guitar and one bass player. That's probably the main difference when it comes to the sound but also like influences. We wanted to offset all the metal in the sound and also we have never sell outselves saying that we play progressive music. That is only what people call us but we tried to minimize all these progressive elements from our music, we tried to create something cool... I don't wanna say progressive, but progressive in the way that is original, but tried to play down all these technical and musical elements that...
Like Dream Theater elements!
Yes, we have never sounded like Dream Theater. We want to be as far away as possible to that kind of music. We are not a progressive band, we have never been a progressive band. People just put us in that genre because they can't place us anywhere I guess... or whatever.
"The New Routine" seems the title of a new beginning. What do you mean with this title?
Yes, it is a start of something new for us. Totally. A new direction. Also we hope that it can be a common new routine for our listeners. We want this music to be stuck in their head so...every time they wake up they just hear the new routine, it is going to be a new routine in their lives.
It's a little bit too much. Anyway, i s there any relation with the album cover? It seems to me crumpled up papers...or whatever?
Yeah, it is steam foil, aluminum. There is not a relation with the title. We just wanted to keep on doing something clean when it comes to the artwork, that is a thing that we are doing since the beginnins I guess, try to be simple and clean. There is no an actual relation with the title.
I know you guys had in mind to create this album for a while. You worked with 3 great names Daniel Bergstrand , David Castillo and Lawrence McRory . How you managed to split the work among themselves?
Yes, this time we worked with another producer who we haven't worked before, David Castillo, who have worked with...
Opeth!
Hobbit?
No Opeth! Like Mikael Akerfeldt... he's not an hobbit...maybe!
Oh yes, Opeth! Sure. No hobbit then. He actually came in contact with us in 2013 I guess, when we released our first album "Puls". He came to us after a show, ask us if we wanted to record our next album with him, but we did not. We kept on with Daniel but... with this album we wanted to try something new, so we decided to give him a shot. We called David and ask him if he wanted to record a new album with us. We showed him some demos, he was kind of expecting to record a more alternative metal or progressive metal album, or something close to what we have done before. He was both surprised, surely positively surprised that it wasn't something like he expected. He found something different to what we done before, so he said "Yes, that's cool, this sounds cool, let's do it". So we booked time in the studio with him, we started with the drums for a week and then a couple of months later we want back to the studio again to record the bass and the guitars with him. Then we recored the vocals with by ourselves in the same studio but without him. We took the finished album to Daniel for mixing because we really liked what he is doing with the whole thing so we wanted to take back to him. We think he did a great job finding the sound that we were looking for. And... Lawrence McRory did the mastering. He worked with Daniel, they sited in the same studio.
You said this album is a went back to the music you grew up mixed with the music that ispires you today. Was it hard to properly combine music from the past with current music?
Well, it's hard since we are three people trying to find a common ground. There is always something like... not a fight, but there are something different opinions regards the path we should go. We are listening to very different music today.
So what is your favorite band or musician?
Personally I listen to a lot of Electric Light Orchestra, or a band called Mae or Mew. I mostly listen to old music, everything from 60' pop to 70' progressive rock. Yes, everything that I enjoy listening to. The Reign of Kindo is an amazing band as well, jazzy pop music. I used to listen to a lot of hardcore bands when I was 14...
"Old Fashioned" was the first single you released to anticipate this new album. Is there any particular reason why you have chosen this song?
Yes. It's always hard to choose the first song that you are going to show everyone. We knew that the album is going to come out to a couple of months later.. almost six months later actually. But we wanted to release something and we thought that "Old Fashion" was like a very good combination between our new sound and the old sound since has some of old elements as well. It has a pretty classic, even if some people might not agree with me... but it has some classic Port Noir chorus, even compared with old music.

5 years from now where do you see yourself?
On the stages, there is nothing else (laugh). Seriuosly, we want to do it fulltime. We are not doing it full time at the moment but we really want to. We are going to try everything to get out there with our own style and our own music. If we don't get the stage all the time, at least I hope we can be in more parts of the world apart from Europe like United States or Asia...
Last time we saw you in Italy was about 2 years ago when you played with Pain Of Salvation. How long do we have to keep waiting for you to come again? Are you planning a tour in support of this new record?
Uhm, a bit more but not for too long. There are going to be a tour announcement in few weeks. And there is a show in Italy, not in Milan.
