Ciao Anders e benvenuto su SpazioRock.it! La vostra ultima release, "The Road More or Less Traveled", appena uscita, include un live album e un DVD dello show dello scorso anno al Frontiers Rock Festival. Il titolo sembra riferirsi al lungo percorso che ha segnato la vostra carriera musicale, è così?
Come hai detto tu, un lungo percorso, ma anche una sorta di considerazione umoristica, che poi è il nostro modo di vedere le cose, molto umilmente, perchè si tratta di una strada già percorsa da tanti altri prima di noi e che verrà battuta da altrettanti dopo che ce ne saremo andati.
Quel giorno, il 23 aprile 2016, avete avuto un ospite molto speciale sul palco, un grande musicista e cantante che milita nella band svedese H.E.A.T, Jona Tee. Com'è nata l'idea di questa collaborazione? Pensate sia possibile in futuro ipotizzare una ulteriore collaborazione con questa nuova promettente band?
Siamo molto amici sia di Jona sia dei ragazzi della sua band, perchè sono stati in tour in Europa con noi nel 2010 in occasione dell'uscita di "Coup De Grace". Jona è anche un bravissimo chitarrista (oltre a suonare le tastiere negli H.E.A.T aveva fatto da turnista proprio nei TREAT quando Patrick era stato costretto a cancellare la sua partecipazione ad alcune date del tour a causa di impegni lavorativi e problemi legati alla logistica degli spostamenti, ndr). Penso che gli H.E.A.T siano davvero una delle poche band di talento nella nuova generazione svedese di questo filone (rock melodico) e poi avevo già prodotto il solo album di Erik Grönwall (cantante attuale degli H.E.A.T e secondo vocalist della formazione, ndr) nel 2010.
Il 26 marzo del 1993 avete deciso di separarvi, per poi tornare alla grande nel 2010 con un album in studio dopo la breve parentesi della compilation dei vostri successi "Weapons of Choice". Nel 2016, con "Ghost Of Graceland", pare che abbiate deciso di aggiornare un po' il vostro sound. Cosa possiamo aspettarci in futuro?Se dai una scorsa al nostro catalogo, non ci sono mai stati particolari "scossoni", ma ogni singola release è sempre stata in linea coi tempi, perchè la band vuole essere così. Nella mia mente c'è una progressione naturale ben chiara, e spero che i prossimi dischi ci aiuteranno a definire il melodic rock sound del futuro, così come è successo per "Coup de Grace" e "Ghost of Graceland". Ho ben chiaro dove voglio andare col prossimo lavoro, devo solo mettere in pratica la mia visione.
Tornando al famoso show dello scorso anno: avete aperto il set parlando di promesse infrante e lo avete chiuso con "World Of Promises". Si è trattato di un messaggio di speranza o di disincanto nei confronti del tempo in cui viviamo?
Se ti riferisci alle lyrics di "Ghost of Graceland" assolutamente si. E' anche in qualche modo intrinseco alle lyrics di "World of Promises" e riassume perfettamente la delusione nei confronti del mondo di oggi. Credo fermamente che l'umanità sia sull'orlo di un passaggio cruciale verso una presa di coscienza, ma ci sono troppi giochi di potere in campo che potrebbero anche prendere il sopravvento e far crollare tutto e questo cambierebbe la situazione in negativo.
Quella canzone ("World of Promises") è contenuta in "Dreamhunter" del 1987, l'anno prima del Vostro live al "Monsters Of Rock" festival in Germania nell'agosto '88. Le aspettative che avevate allora si sono realizzate ad oggi?
Per certi versi si, in altri no, dobbiamo ancora dare un assaggio di quello che abbiamo da offrire agli USA e al Sud America! Sappiamo di avere moltissimi fan laggiù, ma non ci è mai capitata l'opportunità giusta per un tour da quelle parti.
Conosco una storia curiosa sul vostro conto e lascia che ti chieda quanto ci sia di vero...pare che poco dopo l'uscita del Vostro primo singolo "Too Wild" nel 1984, Joey Tempest (Europe) scrisse "Rock The Night" con il preciso intento di rispondere al vostro successo perchè, parole sue - "it was such a good song that it made him both angry and happy at the same time". Che mi dici, è così che andò?
Non so sinceramente se le cose andarono proprio così, ma conoscevo Joey a quei tempi, e nei club i dj suonavano spesso quella canzone, penso che questo possa averlo ispirato per scrivere la sua! (ride, ndr) Ma si, sarebbe successo comunque, e poi siamo ottimi amici e suoniamo spesso insieme, proprio come allora.
"The Pleasure Principle" venne registrato ai famosi Polar Music Studios (ABBA) nello stesso anno di "The Final Countdown"; pare proprio che ai tempi ci fosse un'aura di competizione tra di voi. Tu l'hai mai percepita?
Non proprio, ma mi rendo conto che i media l'hanno alimentata e cercano ancora di fare in modo che la gente veda rivalità tra bands. E' una cosa piuttosto stupida anche perchè entrambi siamo orgogliosamente all'apice delle nostre carriere e abbiamo perfino fatto un tour insieme in Giappone nel 2015.
Sono certa che i vostri fans italiani sentiranno la vostra mancanza al prossimo Frontiers Rock Festival, ma speriamo di potervi rivedere molto presto. Vuoi lasciare un messaggio per loro?

Your latest live release "The Road More or Less Traveled" is going to be out soon. It includes a live album and a DVD of the complete show at last year Frontiers Rock Festival. The title itself seems to refer to the long path of your career. What message did you actually want to express through those six words?
As you mention, a long career path, but also with a humorous twist, which is very much our way of seeing things and a humble way of saying, that this has been done by many before us and will be done by many after we're gone!
On that day, the 23rd of April 2016, you had a very special guest on stage, a great musician and singer who also plays in the Swedish band H.E.A.T., Jona Tee. How did it happen? Do you consider possible a further collaboration with this young and promising band?
We've been good friends with Jona and the band, since H.E.A.T toured with us as special guest on the "Coup De grace" European tour in 2010. He's a great player and have been stepping in at times when Patrick has been forced to cancel (due to other work commitments with too long travel logistics). I hold H.E.A.T as one of the few really talented new generation Swedish bands around, and I produced Erik Grönwalls solo Album from 2010.
You decided to split up on the 26th of March 1993, then you made your grand return in 2010 (after the 2006 compilation "Weapons of Choice") with the magnificent "Coup de Grace". In 2016, with "Ghost Of Graceland", you kind of updated your sound. What can your fans expect in future?
If you look at our whole album catalog, there's a slight change with every album, but they are always in tune with where we are as a band and the times we live in. That's a natural progression in my mind, and I hope that future albums will help define tomorrows melodic hard rock sound, and be as valid as our 2 latest albums, "Coup de Grace" and "Ghost of Graceland". I have ideas where to go with the next one, now I just have to make it real.
Going back to your performance in Milan last year, you opened your set singing about "the broken promises" of "Ghost of Graceland" and then you closed it with the strong feeling of hope on which is based "World Of Promises". What is your feeling about these present times?
I guess you refer to the lyric line in "Ghost of Graceland"? Yes it's somewhat intertwined in lyrics with "World of Promises" and very much summarize the disappointment with how the world is run today, I strongly believe Mankind is on the brink of breaking through to a higher knowing and consciousness, but there are strong forces in power that don't want this to happen as it will be a total game changer.
That song is included in "Dreamhunter" and it was released in 1987, one year before you managed to get the opening slot for the German "Monsters Of Rock" festival in August '88. Have the expectations you had in those days been fulfilled at this stage of your career?
In some ways yes, in some ways not, we still have to give the US and South America a good Treat! We know we have fans there, but never had a good opportunity to tour.
I know a story about you and since I got this one chance... I would like to ask you if it's true. Shortly after the first single "Too Wild" was released, back in 1984, Europe's vocalist Joey Tempest wrote "Rock The Night" as an answer to your catchy rock anthem cause "it was such a good song that it made him both angry and happy at the same time". Is it a true story? If so, how did it make you feel?
I don't know if that exactly is the way it happened though, I hung out with Joey a bit at clubs around that time and the DJs played our single "Too Wild" pretty often and I think he got a little inspired to write his own floor filler. I think it was going to happen anyway. We still good friends and do shows together now and then.
"The Pleasure Principle" was recorded in the famous Polar Music Studios (ABBA) in the same year of "The Final Countdown" and again, the silent battle against Europe seemed to be turned on again. Have you ever really felt this kind of competition with them?
Not really, but it was always the media who tried (and still are) to make the bands into rivals, nowadays it's plain silly, as both bands are proud to still be on top of our game and even did a joint Japanese tour in 2015.
I'm sure your Italian fans will be missing you at the upcoming edition of the Frontiers Rock Festival but we all hope to see you back in Italy soon. Would you like to leave a message to them in the meantime?
We'd love to come back to Italy soon, as you guys are the best sing along audience in the world. Until then, I guess you can enjoy our Live DVD/Blu-Ray/CD from last years Frontiers Rock Festival! We will return!
