Ciao (in italiano, ndr) Costanza, innanzitutto ti ringrazio per il benvenuto. Non è che mi sono svegliato una mattina e mi sono sentito di essere il prescelto per diventare il "Master of happiness"... (ride, ndr). È qualcosa che si sviluppa con gli anni. Ho sempre scritto melodie e arrangiamenti che rispecchiassero un modo di pensare positivo con parti che suonassero felici e allegre. Ma la ragione principale è che io stesso sono una persona positiva e ottimista e non voglio nasconderlo.

Durante tutti questi anni di carriera prolifica, quale è stato il migliore feedback che hai ricevuto riguardo a questa energia positiva che riuscite a trasmettere ai vostri fan?

Riceviamo molte mail e messaggi dai fan, ci scrivono che la nostra musica li ha aiutati e supportati durante periodi difficili della loro vita. Questo ci colpisce molto e al tempo stesso ci fa sentire fieri di poter offrire supporto a coloro che stanno affrontando un amaro destino o per esempio hanno perduto una persona cara durante la loro vita... Quindi puoi constatare quanto sia forte il potere della musica.

In una delle nostre precedenti interviste ci dicesti che la vita e il viaggiare sono le tue principali fonti di ispirazione. Perché non ci racconti quale è stata la destinazione che finora ti ha ispirato maggiormente e quale sarebbe la prossima se avessi un biglietto in bianco tra le mani?

Una delle cose fantastiche durante i tour è che incontro un sacco di belle persone da tutto il mondo... E a volte ho la possibilità di visitare alcune di loro durante le mie vacanze. Sicché, puoi vedere luoghi che non scoveresti mai se tu fossi un semplice turista... Non mi dimenticherò mai quanto fu bello attraversare, in moto, le vallate intorno a Los Angeles durante uno dei miei viaggi. Mi sentivo come nel film "Born to be wild" (ride, ndr). Un biglietto in bianco? Partirei col la mia moto per prenderei il prossimo traghetto per la Sardegna, è la mia isola preferita!

C'è forse una canzone che è stata ispirata da uno dei tuoi soggiorni in Italia?

Sono stato in vacanza in Sardegna nell'estate del 2014... Ho trascorso delle giornate fantastiche, la natura è bellissima, le persone sono uniche e cortesi e le spiagge sono eccezionali. Sono sicuro che ha ispirato la scrittura di alcune delle canzoni dell'album "Master of Light" il cui song-writing iniziò nell'inverno del 2015. Ad ogni modo quando tornai a Livorno col traghetto, incontrai i miei amici e compari della band italiana Vexillum e seguì una grandiosa gita di un giorno nella meravigliosa Toscana.

E che mi dici dei viaggi di fantasia? Se non sbaglio, l'idea dietro a "Land Of The Crimson Dawn" era associata al bisogno delle persone di evadere dalla realtà e anche l'artwork del vostro disco precedente, "Beyond", sembra suggerire un invito a scoprire una dimensione parallela. Sei un sognatore ad occhi aperti o la musica ti fornisce già tutta e sola la magia che ti serve nella tua vita?

Puoi chiamarlo sogno, ma puoi anche provare a realizzarlo quel sogno. Per certe persone resterà sempre il loro personale "Beyond", cioé un sogno o un desiderio per il resto delle loro vite. Altre persone riusciranno a cambiare la loro vita in una migliore. Noi siamo convinti che il potere del pensare positivo e il credere in quanto c'è di buono sia la "arma" più forte in nostro possesso. Nelle nostre liriche fantasy potete trovare elementi del reale che possono essere applicati alle vostre vite.

Qual è il disco che ascolti quando hai bisogno di farti tirare su di morale?

Quando mi sveglio la mattina, prima di tutto mi faccio un caffé e poi mi rilasso ascoltando la musica di George Winston - Summer - (che poi è quello che sto facendo proprio adesso)... per me è questo il perfetto inizio della giornata.

Ascoltando il tuo ultimo lavoro, direi che l'amtosfera della title-track non è poi così spensierata. Si tratta si una scelta che tradisce un accenno di un possibile interesse nell'allontanarvi dal vostro tradizionale happy mood e magari sperimentare il lato oscuro del metal?

I Freedom Call esprimeranno sempre il lato positivo della vita... ma per sperimentare tutta questa felicità c'è da imparare a gestire gli aspetti negativi, i momenti cupi e difficili della vita. Il nostro "Master of Light" è una persona che viveva a cavallo di entrambi i lati... ma che poi ha scelto la luce e la irradia su tutti noi. Questo personaggio del Master è presentato dalla musica e dai testi della title-track.

Un'altra canzone leggermente inusuale è la ballad acustica (e power) "A Cradle Of Angels" che sono sicura delizierà i vostri fan. A cosa ti sei ispirato per scriverla?

Solitamente non ho un gran talento nel comporre le ballad... ma in questo caso, l'idea è venuta mentre strimpellavo la mia chitarra acustica per conto mio. La musica per me è un modo molto personale e familiare di esprimere le emozioni... è qualcosa come sentirsi nudi mentre ti esibisci esprimendo le tue parole e la tua musica. Questa canzone, "Cradle of Angels" è nata durante un momento molto pensieroso e "silenzioso" che ho poi catturato con questa traccia.

Riguardo ai cori di "Master of Light" hai dichiarato che vi siete superati rispetto al passato. Perché non ci spieghi come si costruisce un capolavoro di coro? Sono sicura che la frangia più power dei tuoi fan sarebbe molto interessata da questo aspetto del making of.

Se svelassi questo segreto così ben custodito... tutte le altre band finirebbero per scrivere dei cori altrettanto catchy (ride, ndr). Non c'è formula per scrivere questo tipo di cori... Se si tratta di un capolavoro di coro o meno, sarà soltanto il gusto dell'ascoltatore a decretarlo. Quando scrivo musica, è come scrivere una storia, cresce di parola in parola e il contesto guida la melodia del coro.

Quindi è questo l'aspetto dell'ultimo album di cui sei più fiero o ce n'è un altro che vorresti svelarci?

Naturalmente, vado fiero di tutti gli album, canzoni e show che abbiamo fatto con i Freedom Call. La musica è la mia vita e la mia passione... e posso concedermi il lusso di vivere questo mio sogno. Comunque il momento più eccitante e travolgente è quando andiamo in tour e percepiamo quanto la gente del pubblico è emotivamente influenzata dalla nostra musica. È questo a renderci fieri e felici.

Secondo la vostra tabella di marcia attuale, i Freedom Call saranno molto impegnati con il tour fino alla fine di Febbraio. C'è qualche speranza che l'Italia sia la destinazione successiva?

No, no, non ci dimentichiamo della "Bella Italia" nel nostro itinerario. Il "Master of Tour" durerà per tutto il 2017 e già non vediamo l'ora di visitare diverse città italiane. Sappiamo che l'Italia ha già abbastanza "Light"... ma porteremo il nostro "Master" comunque...

Prima di salutarci (almeno fino alla nostra prossima intervista!), ti ringrazio per il tempo che ci hai dedicato. C'è un messaggio che vorresti lasciare ai nostri lettori e ai vostri fan italiani?

Ciao (in italiano, ndr) Costanza, ti ringrazio molto per questa bella intervista e il tuo supporto. Sono stato molte volte in Italia e ho visitato altrettanti luoghi del vostro paese. Ogni volta che attraverso il Brennero per scendere in Italia provo sempre questa formidabile e accogliente sensazione... tornerò, spero presto... Salute, Chris.

Hi Chris and welcome back to SpazioRock. The last time we had a chat together it was to celebrate the 15 years of Freedom Call with the release of your best of "Ages Of Light". Today you're here to promote "Master of Light". When did you feel, for the very first time, to have become a master of this unique art of yours to turn happiness and enthusiasm into a four minutes track?

Ciao Costanza, firstly, thank you for the welcome. It's not that I woke up in the morning and I felt chosen to become the Master of happiness... (he laughs, Ed.). It's a development over the years. I always wrote melodies and arrangements which were in a positive thinking way and with happy and cheerful sounding parts. But the main reason is, that I'm a positive and optimistic thinking person and I don't want to hide it.

During all these years of prolific carrier what has been the best feedback about the positive energy you guys are able to transmit to your fans?

We're getting many mails and messages of fans, they are writing, that our music helped and supported in hard times of their life. That makes us feeling amazed but proud to support people who really have a bitter fate or for example a loss of a person in life... So, we can see how strong is the force of music.

In one of our previous interviews you said life and travelling are your main sources of inspiration. Why don't you tell us what has been your most enlightening destination, so far, and what will be the next if you had a blank ticket in your hands?

One fantastic thing while touring is, that I'm meeting a lot of great people from all around the world... and sometimes I have the possibility to visit some of them again in my holidays. So, you can see places you never would find as a regular tourist... I never will miss the amazing time I had on a trip to Los Angeles, where I crossed the valleys with a motorbike, I felt bit like in the movie "Born to be wild" (he laughs, Ed.). A blank ticket? I take the next ferry to Sardegna with my motorbike, it's my favourite Island!

Is there a song which has been possibly inspired by one of your previous trips to Italy?

I have been on vacation on Sardegna in summer of 2014... I spent a fantastic time, it's such a beautiful nature, nice and unique people and amazing beaches. I'm sure, that this inspired me to write some songs for the album "Master of Light" which song writing process I started in winter to 2015. By the way, when I returned to Livorno by ferry, I met my friends and fellows of the Italian metal band Vexillum and had a great day trip in the beautiful Toscana.

And what about fantasy journeys? If I am not mistaken, the idea behind "Land Of The Crimson Dawn" was related to people's need to escape from reality and the artwork of your previous album "Beyond" seems to suggest an invitation to discover an alternative dimension as well. Are you a daydreamer or music itself already offers you all the magic you need in your life?

You can name it a dream, but you also can try to make your dream come true. For some people will remain their personal "Beyond" as a dream or desire for the rest of their life. For other people their life will change to a better one. We are convinced that the power of positive thinking and the belief in good things is the strongest "weapon" we are possessing. In all our fantasy lyrics you can find parts and elements of reality which you can devolve to your own life.

What is the album you listen to when you possibly need to be cheered a little bit up?

When I'm waking up in the morning, first of all I'm making a coffee and the chill out music of George Winston - Summer (that's what I'm doing right now)... that is for me a perfect start in the day.

Listening to your latest release, the mood of the title-track appears to be not-so-merry. Is this choice a hint betraying a possible interest in moving on from your traditionally positive vibe to experiment the dark side of metal?

Freedom Call will always express the bright side of life... but for all this happiness you have to learn to handle negative sides, dark or hard moments in life. Our "Master of Light" is a person who was living through both sides... but he decided for the bright side and is sending a shine to all of us. This personality of the Master is enunciated in the music and lyrics of this title-track.

Another slightly unusual song is the acoustic (and powerful) ballad "A Cradle Of Angels" which I am sure will delight your fans. Where did you find the inspiration for this track?

Usually I'm not very talented in writing ballads... but in this case, the idea came while strumming acoustic guitar just beside and for myself. Music is for me a very personal and familiar way to express the emotions... it feels sometimes like being naked while performing your own words and music. This song "Cradle of Angels" came up in a thoughtful and silent moment which I captured with this song.

You said that, as far as chorus parts are concerned, with "Master of Light" you have topped your previous releases. Why don't you explain how you build a proper chorus? I am sure the power metal fringe of your fans will be very interested in this aspect of the making of.

When I would disclose this well hidden secret... all bands would write such catchy chorus lines (he laughs, Ed.). There is no formula to write this kind of chorus lines... if it's a proper chorus or not, just the taste of the listener is deciding. When I'm writing music, it's like writing a story, from word to word it's growing and the content is leading to the melody of the chorus.

Is this the aspect of this album which make you the proudest or is there another one you would like to share with us?

Of course, all albums, songs or shows we did with Freedom Call are making me proud. Music is my life and passion...and I have this amazing luxury to live out my dream. But the most exciting and overwhelming moment is, if we're going on tour and we can feel the people in the audience are emotionally affected by our music. That makes us proud and happy.

According to your current tour schedule, Freedom Call will be very busy touring until the end of February. Is there any chance that Italy is going to be next?

No, no, we won't forget "Bella Italia" in our tour schedule. The "Master of Tour" will lasting the entire year 2017 and we're already looking forward to come to several cities in Italia. We know that Italia has already enough "Light"... but we'll bring our "Master" anyways...

Before saying goodbye (at least until our next interview!), I thank you for your time. Is there a message you would like leave to our readers and to your Italian fans?
