Ciao Aldo, e ben ritrovato su SpazioRock. Sai che fu proprio grazie a una vostra intervista che scoprii l'esistenza di questo magazine, nel remotissimo 2009? È dunque un doppio piacere per me avere l'occasione di poter parlare ancora di Secret Sphere proprio su questi canali. Sette anni, e molti cambiamenti dopo, qual è l'elemento che ritieni invece invariabile per la band?

Ciao Costanza, bene che tu abbia scoperto SpazioRock.it grazie a noi, abbiamo una sorta di utilità (ride, ndr). Si, sette anni in cui sono cambiate tantissime cose e su tantissimi piani delle nostre vite. Sono nate famiglie, ci sono stati addii, abbiamo vissuto momenti belli, situazioni personali difficili e molto tristi, di tutto, ma la cosa che è rimasta lì, sempre, è la passione per la musica che dopo quasi 20 anni continua a spronarci ed è un grande aiuto per vivere, nella giusta maniera, tutto ciò che ci succede attorno, bello o brutto che sia.

Sembra ieri quando mi suggeristi di guardare il film "The Waking Life" come spunto per scrivere "Complice La Notte" (il concept alla base di "Portrait Of A Dying Heart", ndr). A posteriori, credi che il messaggio che volevi diffondere, tramite quel disco, sia arrivato a destinazione? Che cosa ti è rimasto di più di questa esperienza?

Mi ricordo bene! Sono molto appassionato di viaggi astrali e teorie che riguardano l'influenza che hanno i pensieri sulla vita delle persone, è un argomento molto ampio. Sono davvero tantissime le teorie che ruotano attorno a questo mondo. Quando ti chiesi di collaborare a "Portrait..." ti dissi che l'idea alla base era il viaggio dentro noi stessi, credo che il messaggio più forte da quel disco sia arrivato proprio a me. Dall'uscita di "Portrait.." sono accaduti una serie di eventi, alcuni, come ben sai, avrebbero potuto avere una conclusione davvero tragica. In quel percorso c'è stata una forza alla base che mi ha aiutato a mantenere equilibrio, il risultato di tutto ciò è stato un cambiamento nel modo di guardare e affrontare il mio cammino.

Parlando ancora di "Portrait Of A Dying Heart", ricordo che uno dei momenti di maggior soddisfazione per tutti gli addetti ai lavori fu quando iniziarono a uscire quelle recensioni entusiaste grazie alle quali tornarono finalmente ad accendersi i riflettori sul vostro lavoro. Sbaglio o era dai tempi del vostro debutto che non eravate così sulla cresta dell'onda?

Si assolutamente, il disco aveva di nuovo colpito come non accadeva da "A Time Never Come". Durante la composizione del disco avevo la convinzione della qualità del materiale, l'ispirazione era molto forte e questa convinzione è stata anche un po' la fonte della rottura con Roberto (Messina, ndr); il nostro modo di intendere la musica di quel nuovo disco era totalmente divergente e nessuno dei due voleva scendere a compromessi. Da lì nacque la divisione in maniera amichevole, Roberto è tuttora un mio grande amico, ci sentiamo spesso e sono convinto che sia uno dei cantanti italiani con la voce più personale. Michele (Luppi, ndr) è arrivato al momento giusto, anche lui aveva molto da dire sul mood del disco, se ci aggiungi che ha una valenza artistica di rilievo questa unione ha dato i frutti sperati.

Per quanto dispiaccia che una band nostrana sia "costretta" a registrare un live album in Giappone, è certo che una location come Tokyo non possa che contribuire al prestigio del progetto. Immagino fosse il sogno di ciascun membro della band. Perché non ci racconti come siete riusciti nell'impresa?

Guarda, come ho già detto in altre interviste il live non era assolutamente in programma, non reputavo la band ancora pronta ad una simile impresa. I Secret Sphere hanno indubbiamente costruito qualcosa e detto la loro, ma se pensi che ci sono band che hanno ottenuto risultati ben più elevati dei nostri e ancora non hanno un live nella loro discografia, capisci quel che intendo. Sia chiaro: non è uno sminuire il lavoro fatto negli anni. Anzi sono molto orgoglioso di quello che abbiamo costruito, è semplicemente esprimere l'idea che le cose si ottengono con i giusti step, in un epoca dove ci sono abbagli di successi da "social". Questo è il mio pensiero, la realtà delle cose è spesso parecchio sfalsata. A Tokyo è nato tutto perchè il promoter e la label hanno suggerito l'idea di sfruttare il concerto per registrare e riprendere tutto, visto che il concerto era tanto atteso. I Secret sono infatti una delle band italiane più seguite in Giappone e loro avrebbero potuto organizzare il tutto. Io, da buon fan dei Dokken mi sono immaginato (con i dovuti paragoni) "Beast From The East" e ho accettato!Nella fattispecie abbiamo solo suonato (ride, ndr)! Il risultato è decisamente ottimo a livello di esecuzione e sonorità, la parte video risulta parecchio selvaggia, non è patinata, ma non me ne frega molto, è vera, alcuni camera-men erano direttamente in mezzo al pubblico e venivano continuamente sballottati dai fan che hanno sostenuto la band tutto il tempo con molto coinvolgimento. Ringrazio molto le persone che lavorano con noi in Giappone per il loro lavoro!

Quale è il tuo ricordo migliore della tua night in Tokyo?

Tutti gli artisti che visitano il Giappone se ne innamorano e io mi associo al coro, ci sono stato due volte e torneremo tra due mesi. Il Giappone è una terra che insegna il rispetto per le cose e per le persone. Ricordo che nel 2012, durante il viaggio promozionale di "Portrait.." fummo trattati alla stregua di Rockstar e non sono parole al vento, ma verità: conferenze stampa, traduttori, abbiamo fatto interviste negli uffici della Warner Japan, seduti sulle poltrone che la settimana prima avevano ospitato Jimmy Page. E nel tour il trattamento è stato ugualmente di altissimo livello.

Riguardo alla tracklist, la prima metà è dedicata alle tracce di maggior rilievo di "Portrait Of A Dying Heart" mentre la seconda propone alcuni dei vostri maggiori successi del passato reinterpretati da Michele. Quanto è stato difficile selezionare soltanto sette brani a riassumere quasi vent'anni di carriera? In previsione di questo anniversario... avete già iniziato a pensare a come festeggiarlo a dovere?

La scaletta è stata molto incentrata su "Portrait..." ovviamente perché è la prima opera con Michele alla voce e poi, riallacciandomi al discorso precedente, il disco è entrato subito nel cuore dei fan anche dei più conservatori. Il resto dei pezzi sono quelli che la gente chiedeva maggiormente a ridosso del tour e comunque tra i più conosciuti della nostra discografia, forse manca qualche puntata nel debut album.

Nel pacchetto "One Night In Tokyo", composto da 2CD e un DVD, abbiamo, come bonus track, una nuova versione del singolo "Lie To Me". Ci racconti come siete finiti a collaborare con Annette Olzon (nota ai più come ex-cantante dei Nightwish, ndr)? C'erano anche altre cantanti in lizza per questo duetto o vi siete indirizzati fin da subito verso la vocalist svedese?

L'idea è nata dai ragazzi della Frontiers! Apprezzano molto "Lie To Me" è in assoluto uno dei nostri pezzi più riusciti, visto il successo del brano hanno avuto l'idea di sfruttare ancora questo brano per dare ulteriore lustro a questa release e per promuovere al meglio la band anche attraverso le radio. Le proposte erano molte al riguardo, ma ti dirò, non sono un grande fan delle voci femminili per puro e semplice gusto, Annette la trovo parecchio differente dal classico standard "female metal band", ha una voce molto riconducibile al Pop, nel mio immaginario sarebbe stato meraviglioso anche avere Anneke van Giersbergen o Lizzy Hale perché sono uniche.

Prima di tornare nel paese del Sol Levante, a Dicembre, per due date con i Trick Or Treat, il 30 Ottobre farete la gioia dei vostri fan italiani sul palco del Frontiers Metal Festival, in quel del Live Club. Credi che riuscirete a fare qualche altra data in Italia prima di fine anno?

A parte il Frontiers Metal Fest, al momento, nel 2017 faremo una sola data in Italia.

Parlando di festival, non possiamo non citare il tuo fondamentale contributo alla realizzazione della prima edizione del Festival di SpazioRock in quanto membro dell'agenzia Truck Me Hard. Come hai vissuto il 24 Settembre, dopo tutti quei mesi di lavoro?

Il 24 settembre ero molto rilassato in realtà (ride, ndr). Per lo SpazioRock.it Festival abbiamo lavorato con una perizia tale da lasciare davvero poco al caso, se non i classici imprevisti, che per fortuna sono stati abbastanza semplici da gestire. Facendo parte della redazione sai bene che con i tuoi boss abbiamo deciso di creare un evento attorno ad un genere a cui non si dedicava più molta attenzione e abbiamo fatto un festival pensando da fan, il risultato è stato grandioso, una dimostrazione siamo ancora in tanti!

Non possiamo salutarci prima di porti almeno una domanda su quando so già essere in cantiere, ovvero il vostro prossimo album in studio. A che punto sono i lavori? C'è qualcosa che puoi già anticiparci della vostra ultima fatica?

A questo punto posso dire che a livello compositivo siamo in stato avanzato, musicalmente i brani ci sono tutti. Ho avuto una sorta di blocco compositivo per parecchio tempo, inizialmente perché non avevo materiale all'altezza di "Portrait..", poi un anno intero è stato davvero difficile da gestire a causa di una brutta situazione, come dicevo prima... infine da inizio 2016 tutto ha ripreso la piega giusta, le cose si sono sistemate, è arrivata anche la proposta Frontiers che ha definitivamente riacceso i motori. Sono molto contento di lavorare con loro, hanno trasmesso molta energia e adesso posso dire che si va a gonfie vele, il materiale è ottimo, un inno alla vita!

Hi Aldo, and welcome back on SpazioRock. Do you know that, in 2009, it was thanks to one of your interviews that I found out about the existence of this magazine? So it is a double pleasure for me to have the chance to talk with you about Secret Sphere. Seven years, and many changes later, what is the the invariable element for the band?

Hi Costanza, it's nice that you discovered SpazioRock.it thanks to us, we have a sort of utility then (he laughs). Yes, seven years in which a lot has changed under many different aspects of our lives. Families were born, he had to say some goodbyes, we had great moments, very difficult and sad personal situations, everything you may think of, but the one think it has always remained is the passion for music. After almost 20 years it still drives us and it is a great help in dealing with life, in the right way, whatever happens, good and evil.

It feels like yesterday to me when you recommended me to watch the movie "The Waking Life" before writing "She Complies With The Night" (the concept on which "Portrait Of A Dying Heart" is based). Now, do you think the message you wanted to deliver, by means of that album, has reached the target? What is the aspect of this experience which was most important for you?

I remember very well! I'm really passionate about astral journeys and theories about how thoughts can influence people life. There are really so many theories behind this topic. When I asked you to collaborate to "Portrait..." I told you the core idea for it was a journey inside ourselves. I believe the strongest message the album delivered was actually to myself. From the release of "Portrait.." a series of events have occurred, some, as you well know, may have had a tragic ending. During this path, at the bottom of it, there was a strength which helped me in keeping my balance. All this period resulted in a change in the way I see life and I deal with it.

Referring again to "Portrait Of A Dying Heart", I remember that one of the most satisfactory moments, for all the people involved in the project, was the day all those positive reviews arrived. Thanks to this, Secret Sphere were, finally, in the spotlight once again. Am I wrong or it had been since your debut album that this wasn't happening?

Yes, absolutely. The album caught the attention like it hadn't happened since "A Time Never Come". During its composition I was confident of the quality of the material. The inspiration was very strong and this certainty of mine was somehow the reason behind the split with (Messina); our approach to the music, for that new album, was totally diverging and none of us wanted to settle for a compromise. This was the origin of the split, which happened in a friendly manner. Roberto is still a dear friend of mine. We are often in touch and I consider him as one of the vocalist with the most personal approach to singing on the Italian scene. Michele (Luppi) arrived at the right time, he had a lot to offer for the mood of that album too. Thanks to his talent, and remarkable artistic skills, our union gave the good results we were expecting.

Despite it is a little bit sad that an Italian band has to go to Japan to record a live album, we can't deny that a location like Tokyo offers an additional prestige to the project. I am sure everyone in the band had been dreaming about this for a while. Why don't you tell us how did you manage to do that?

Well, as I have already said in other interviews, a live album was not on our schedule. I didn't believe the band was ready for it. Secret Sphere has definitely built something and made the difference somehow but, if you think about other bands, which have achieved much more than us and still don't have a live album, you will get what I mean. Don't take me wrong: I am not undermining the work done during the years, I am very proud of what we have build, I just want to express the idea that each step takes its own time, especially in an era when having success on social media is often mistaken with a real achievement. This is my opinion on this matter, reality is often misinterpreted.

As far as Tokyo is concerned, based on the interest shown by our fans for that event, our promoter and label suggested to make the most of the show by recording it. Secret Sphere are in fact one of the most followed Italian bands in Japan and they were able to realize it. Me being a Dokken fan, I imagined (with the due comparison) "Beast From The East" and I accepted! We just had to play! (he laughs).

The result is definitely great as far as performance and sound are concerned. Unfortunately the video is a little bit too wild, but I am not too concerned, it is authentic. Some of the cameramen were in the middle of the public and were constantly agitated by fans who supported us so enthusiastic. I really want to thank all the people working for us in Japan for their good job!

What is your best memory of your night in Tokyo?

All artist visiting Japan literally fall in love with it and the same happened to me. I have already been there twice and we are going back there in two months time. Japan is a land where there is a deep respect for things and people. I remember, in 2012, during the promotional visit for "Portrait.." they treated us as Rockstars. I am not joking, it is true: press conferences, translators, we were interviewed in the offices of Warner Japan, sitting on the same sofas where Jimmy Page was sitting only one week before. We had the very same excellent level of service during the tour as well.

As far as the track-list of your live album is concerned, the first half is focused on the most successful tracks of "Portrait Of A Dying Heart" whereas the second is dedicated to your classics, this time reinterpreted by Michele. Was it difficult to select only seven tracks to represent almost 20 years of career?

The track-list is obviously focused on "Portrait..." because it is the first album with Michele as our vocalist. Nevertheless the album managed to conquer the heart of even the most conservative fans. The rest of the tracks are those the people requested the most before the tour. They are also among the most known of our discography, perhaps only something from our debut album is missing.

In "One Night In Tokyo", made of two CDs an one DVD, there is, as bonus track, a new version of the single "Lie To Me". Why don't you tell us how you ended up working with Annette Olzon (former singer of Nightwish)? Did you consider other names or you went for her since the very beginning?

The idea came from Frontiers! They really appreciate "Lie To Me". It is absolutely one of our best songs ever and so, given its success, they came with this idea of making the most of it to better advertise this release and to promote the band also on the radio. We considered were many names but I have to admit I am not a huge fan of female vocalists per se. Conversely, I find Annette very different from the typical voice for a "female metal band". Her voice is close to pop. In my mind, I would have loved to work with Anneke van Giersbergen or Lizzy Hale as well, they are unique.

Before a new trip to Japan in December, for two shows with Trick Or Treat, you are going to amaze your Italian fans at Frontiers Metal Festival, on the 30th of October at the Live Club. Can you anticipate any additional show?

Following the Frontiers Metal Fest, for the time being, we have scheduled only one show in 2017 in Italy.

Since we are talking of festivals, we have to mention your fundamental contribution to the first edition of the SpazioRock Festival as a member of the agency Truck Me Hard. How was the 24th of September for you, after all those months of work and commitment?

On the 24th of September I was very relaxed to be honest (he laughs). We had been working so hard, and in a such professional way, for the SpazioRock.it Festival that there was not room left for concerns. We had of course a few typical unexpected events that, luckily enough, were rather easy to sort out. Being you part of the magazine, you know very well already how the whole team decided to dedicate an event to a music category which had been a little bit neglected lately. We created this festival thinking as fans and the result was extraordinary, a real demonstration of how many people are still interested in this kind of music and event.

We can't say goodbye without a question on Secret Sphere new studio album which I know it is already a work in progress. At which stage of the composition are you at the moment? What can you reveal of this new project of yours?

What I can say is that the composition is at an advanced stage: musically speaking, all the tracks are ready. I had a sort of creative block for a long time, at first because I had no material which could match the quality of the one in "Portrait..", and then I had a very difficult year for a serious situation I mentioned before. Luckily, since the beginning of 2016, everything started working again and Frontiers offer made the difference as well. I am very happy to work with them, they transmitted me lots of energy and I must say the new material is great, a real hymn to life!
