Welcome back to SpazioRock David, it’s always a pleasure to have you on our pages. Let’s start immediately with the more recent news: the re-issue of your first two full-length, “Virgin Steele” and “Guardians Of The Flame”. Why did you choose to republish again those two albums, after the reprint of 2002 from Sanctuary?

Greetings Stefano! Ciao… Salute! It’s very nice for me to speak with you once again too. OK, to get right into it and answer your question: it actually was not on my radar to re-issue those first two albums. I could have waited much longer to do that. I wasn’t thinking about that at all when No Remorse Records who wanted to put them out approached me. It was their interest that got the ball rolling. We spoke several times and quickly came to an agreement. I think they did a wonderful job with these re-issues… they are really amazing! I enjoyed putting all the music and bonus material together… it brought back a whole lot of great memories.

Working again on those two albums after few decades from their releases, what kind of memories and feelings did they bring to your mind?

I recalled the earliest moments, the first rehearsals, the excitement of recording in a studio, the camaraderie, the Magick of putting down on tape something for all time… It was an amazing moment in my life and I enjoyed every second of every day and every night. The scene was exploding and we were right in the center of it all.

It’s always possible to find bonus tracks inside your albums’ reprints: demos (like in the 2002 “Virgin Steele” reissue), EPs (“Wait For The Night” inside the 2002 version of “Guardians Of The Flame”), rehearsals (“Noble Savage”) and cove songs (“Age Of Consent”). This time you chose to present the same bonus tracks from the 2002 edition of the two albums, with only some slight changes in the first CD and a little more significant ones in the second CD. Why did you not choose to completely vary the bonus section?

Because quite simply there wasn’t anything left to unleash from that earliest period. As you mentioned what I did have from the earliest days, I did use when we first re-issued the albums, so of course I wanted to include that material once again which is why it appears. Both albums especially the first one was already quite long so there wasn’t too much room to add a whole lot of extra material, but I did manage to include some very nice selections. From over 30 different possible candidates for bonus tracks I narrowed things down to what appears. It was a tough choice… because I really liked a lot of those 30 possible tracks! In going through my archives I discovered a wealth of live material from our “The House Of Atreus” Tour, and decided to use a bit of that as first off because this seemed like a good platform to introduce a bit of that and secondly because those live recordings capture the same boisterous, wild, over the top energy and exuberance that the original studio recordings possess, and third… because I think it makes it interesting to see how the band developed and where it went. From “Danger Zone” to “A Token Of My Hatred”… that is quite a journey. And as regards the extra tracks on the second album again a similar story… I had a ton of “The House Of Atreus” Live material, and all of those tracks are quite long so on an already lengthy album… I fit what I could. In going through my material I also came across all the “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” demos and thought some of that might be worth exploring and I’m glad I did that as those tracks are quite exciting! With no drums, just guitars and keyboards a bit of bass and my vocal… the songs still wail. A cool song remains a cool song even in its most raw form.

This time your fans have a wider choice of formats: CD version, vinyl version, even a box with the two versions plus some extras like a t-shirt and a patch. The haters could say that you’re trying to squeeze money from your old-school fans. What do you want to reply to that? From your artistic point of view, what was your vision when you chose the number of versions to realize?

Indeed there is quite an interesting selection! Well anyone who says and thinks like that as regards to Virgin Steele is way off base. First of all it was not my initial idea to do quite that plethora of different versions that was the label’s good and bold idea, and I think they are absolutely right on target with that, because you can’t download a t-shirt, a patch and the whole beautiful incredibly extensive packaging that they provide. They wanted to do something absolutely special for a true Fan and they have achieved that goal mightily. Second we have always gone above and beyond on every release, providing lots of extra material each time out. A lot of re-issues don’t even have any extra material… we provide an extra disc whenever possible, so if a Fan picks up the new version of any of our re-issues they are sure to get something as special as we can make it. If we were only concerned with finance we would play it really super safe and do the same type of record over and over again… but we don’t do that, we challenge ourselves and our audience by continuously pushing our boundaries and exploring new and different terrain because we are in it for the love and the Magick of the Music. And last… no one is forcing anyone to re-purchase these albums. If their original copies still work… then crank those up! If their original copies are worn down and scratched up… then Cheers Folks… here are some new versions… Enjoy! And as regards what you are referring to with haters and social media and such… that is just the current climate we live in… no matter what any artist/musician does… sure enough… there will always be some disgruntled soul with ten fingers and a typing/texting mechanism ready to dump all over it. And in doing so they manage to reveal more about themselves than about anything the artist/musician happens to be doing. These two re-issues were made with a Whole Lotta Love, good will, honor dedication and commitment.

2018 surely is a busy year for Virgin Steele, in the release department, since you also have a 4 albums box scheduled (“Hymns To Victory”, “The Book Of Burning” + 2 new CD). What do we have to expect from this new material?

Indeed it already has been an incredibly busy year! The Box Set that we are releasing with SPV is actually going to be a 5 disc Box Set… we added more new material to it so we needed to include an extra disc! That is why we now have 5 discs instead of the 4 that I originally mentioned. It is coming out in November, hot on the heels of the “Virgin Steele” and “Guardians Of The Flame” releases. And make no mistake; the Box Set that is coming out in November is not all re-issues and old bonus material. There are 3 new albums standing alongside the re-issues of “Hymns To Victory” and “The Book Of Burning”. I will reveal more about these 3 new albums in the weeks ahead.

Since “Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation” is already 3 years old, can we expect a new album from Virgin Steele not too far away, besides the new material from the 4 albums box?

I repeat as I just stated above… lots of new material is being included in the November Box Set. It is quite an Epic package. But if that isn’t enough we have already begun recording several other new albums. One is slated for release next year and will be a full on concept Work in the vein of “The House Of Atreus” or “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” perhaps, and the one that will appear directly after that is already a double disc affair, and has a kind of “Autumnal” theme. The “Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation” album was also a double Disc set with a total of 29 tracks… so as you can see we are always working.

In 3 years the band will be in the music business for 40 years. In almost 4 decades of career with the Virgin Steeele you lived the golden age of metal, the coming and the fall of MTV, the advent of grunge and the death of mainstream metal, and then a new moment of revival of this genre. How did the band has been dealing with all these changes?

The same way we always have… we don’t pay much attention to trends or what the flavor of the month or the year is… we dig deep and plumb the depths of our souls to bring forth the dark secrets of the Underworld, our psyches, our energies and then wrestle with the Universe to drag them kicking and screaming out into the Light Of Day and The Dark Of Night… This is a Way Of Life for us… not a career per se. We hold ourselves to a different standard and we are in it for the duration not the instant gratification. And I believe because of this kind of determination and dedication we bring, the interest is still there and that is why all the albums are continually getting re-issued. Every time we release something brand new or even when we release a re-issue, we attract a new audience that has never heard of the Group before and it continually grows… to me personally I find it quite amazing and beautiful, and I am eternally thankful and grateful. Hail!

Let’s finish with a question about your live performances: with these two reprints ready to see the light and the anniversary of the 30 years from the release of “Age Of Consent”, can we expect to see you guys on stage again, maybe with a setlist focused on the past?

We have always tried to perform a cross-selection of all the material from all the albums… but who knows we are still in the planning & rehearsing stage where we try all kinds of material out… whatever works best during any given year… that is what we perform. Sometimes we try something and it works like a charm… other times it doesn’t for whatever reason… but then we put that song away for a bit and try it again some other year and the Magick returns… so we never really know until we fully explore.

Have you already been considering an Italian show anytime soon?

We do hope to appear in Glorious Italia once again as soon as possible… it is always a supreme pleasure for us to be in front of the Italian Audience! By The Gods & Goddesses!

Ciao David, bentornato su SpazioRock, è sempre un piacere poterti ospitare sulle nostre pagine. Iniziamo subito con l’argomento del giorno: la ristampa dei primi vostri due lavori, “Virgin Steele” e “Guardians Of The Flame”. Come mai avete deciso di riproporre questi due album, tanto più che già nel 2002 erano stati ripubblicati dalla Sanctuary?

Saluti, Stefano! Ciao. Salute! (in italiano, ndr) Anche per me è un grande piacere poter parlare di nuovo con voi. OK, per entrare subito nel vivo e rispondere alla tua domanda: non avevo assolutamente in programma di ristampare quei primi due album. Avrei potuto aspettare anche più a lungo prima di farlo. Non ci stavo pensando affatto quando la No Remorse Records, che aveva intenzione di pubblicarli, mi ha contattato. È stato il loro interesse a mettere tutto in moto. Abbiamo parlato diverse volte e siamo giunti velocemente ad un accordo. Credo che abbiano fatto un lavoro magnifico con queste ristampe, sono davvero fantastici! Mi sono divertito a mettere insieme tutta la musica e il materiale bonus; mi ha fatto tornare in mente un sacco di bei ricordi.

Riprendendo in mano questi due album a decenni dalla loro uscita, quali ricordi e quali sensazioni vi hanno fatto tornare alla mente?

Mi sono tornati in mente i primi momenti, le prime prove, l’eccitazione di registrare in uno studio, il cameratismo, la Magia di mettere qualcosa su nastro per l’eternità. È stato un momento fantastico della mia vita e ho apprezzato ogni secondo di ogni giorno e di ogni notte. La scena musicale stava esplodendo e noi ci trovavamo al centro di tutto.

Le ristampe dei vostri album presentano quasi sempre delle tracce bonus, tra demo (come nella già citata riedizione di “Virgin Steele”), riproposizioni di EP (“Wait For The Night” nella versione di “Guardians Of The Flame” del 2002), prove in studio (“Noble Savage”) e cover (“Age Of Consent”). In questa occasione riproponete le bonus track delle versioni del 2002 con qualche lieve modifica, più significativa per quanto riguarda “Guardians Of The Flame”. Come mai non avete deciso di rivoluzionare completamente la parte bonus?

Perché, molto semplicemente, non era rimasto nulla di quel primo periodo ancora da pubblicare. Come hai detto tu, quello che avevo di quei tempi l’ho utilizzato quando abbiamo ristampato gli album la prima volta, quindi ho voluto includere quel materiale ancora una volta. È questo il motivo. Entrambi gli album, specialmente il primo, erano alquanto lunghi e quindi non vi era molto spazio per aggiungere troppo materiale extra, ma ho cercato di includere una selezione molto gustosa. Partendo da oltre 30 differenti possibili candidati in qualità di traccia bonus ho ristretto la selezione a quello che poi appare su disco. È stata una scelta dura… perché mi piacevano molte di quelle 30 possibili tracce! Spulciando nel mio archivio ho scoperto una grande quantità di materiale dal vivo proveniente dal Tour di “The House Of Atreus” e ho deciso di utilizzarne un po’ innanzitutto perché questa sembrava la giusta occasione per introdurre un po’ di quel materiale e poi perché quelle registrazioni dal vivo catturano la stessa energia ed esuberanza impetuosa, selvaggia e sopra le righe che la registrazione originale da studio possiede, ed infine… perché credo che sia interessante vedere come la band si sia trasformata e dove sia giunta. Da “Danger Zone” a “A Token Of My Hatred",  è davvero un gran viaggio. Per quanto riguarda invece le tracce extra del secondo disco, abbiamo una storia simile. Avevo una quintalata di materiale dal vivo proveniente da “The House Of Atreus” e tutte quelle tracce sono alquanto lunghe e metterle in un altro album già lungo di suo… ho inserito quello che ho potuto. Riguardando il materiale che possiedo sono anche incappato nei demo di “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” e ho pensato che alcuni di quelli sarebbero valsi un ascolto e sono contento di averlo fatto perché quelle tracce sono veramente stimolanti! Senza batteria, solo chitarre e tastiere e un poco di basso e la mia voce… le canzoni colpiscono ancora forte. Un’ottima canzone rimane grande anche nella sua forma più grezza.


Questa volta avete deciso di fare le cose in grande: versione CD, versione vinile, perfino un cofanetto che raccoglie le due versioni ed aggiunge anche extra come maglietta e toppa. Dall’esterno potrebbe sembrare che stiate cercando di spremere al massimo le finanze dei fan. Quale è stata la vostra visione da artisti al momento di decidere quali e quante edizioni realizzare?

Di certo vi è una possibilità di scelta alquanto interessante! Dunque, chiunque pensi in quel modo in merito ai Virgin Steele non ha capito nulla. Innanzitutto non è stata una mia idea realizzare quel numero di versioni differenti, è stata un’idea geniale e vincente dell’etichetta, e credo che abbiano centrato il bersaglio, perché non puoi scaricare una maglietta o una toppa o tutta la bellissima ed incredibile confezione che hanno realizzato. Hanno voluto creare qualcosa di assolutamente speciale per un vero Fan e hanno raggiunto lo scopo alla perfezione. Inoltre abbiamo sempre superato quanto fatto in passato per ogni nuova uscita, aggiungendo sempre molto materiale extra. Molte ristampe non hanno neanche tracce bonus… noi aggiungiamo un disco extra ogni volta che possiamo, così se un Fan compra la nuova versione di una qualsiasi delle nostre ristampe può stare certo di avere qualcosa di quanto più speciale noi potessimo fare. Se fossimo solo interessati all’aspetto finanziario avremmo puntato sul sicuro ed avremmo rifatto più e più volte sempre lo stesso tipo di album, ma noi non lo facciamo, sfidiamo noi stessi ed il nostro pubblico continuando a superare i nostri limiti ed esplorando territori nuovi e differenti perché noi viviamo per l’amore e la Magia della Musica. Infine, non costringiamo nessuno a ricomprare questi album. Se le loro copie originali sono ancora in buono stato, che le sparino a tutto volume! Se le loro copie originali sono consumate e tutte graffiate, allora Salute Gente, eccovi alcune nuove versioni. Buon Divertimento! In merito a quello a cui ti stai riferendo, a quelli che odiano ed ai social media e via dicendo, quello è il clima attuale in cui stiamo vivendo: non importa quello che un artista/musicista faccia, stanne certo, vi sarà sempre un’anima scontenta con dieci dita ed uno strumento per scrivere pronta a sfogarsi. E facendo così rivelano molto di più riguardo a loro stessi piuttosto che a quanto un artista/musicista stia effettivamente facendo. Queste due ristampe sono state realizzate con Tantissimo Amore, buona volontà, onore, dedicazione e impegno.

Il 2018 dei Virgin Steele è sicuramente un anno pieno, sotto l’aspetto delle uscite discografiche, visto che è in programma anche un box da 4 album (“Hymns To Victory”, “The Book Of Burning” e 2 CD inediti). Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci da questo nuovo materiale?

Finora è stato un anno davvero impegnativo! Il Cofanetto che pubblicheremo con la SPV al momento è diventato un Box Set da 5 CD… abbiamo aggiunto altro nuovo materiale così abbiamo dovuto includere un disco extra! Questo è il motivo per cui ora abbiamo 5 dischi invece dei 4 che avevo inizialmente annunciato. Uscirà a novembre, seguendo la pubblicazione di “Virgin Steele” e di “Guardians Of The Flame”. E non farti ingannare, il Conafetto che uscirà a novembre non sarà solo ristampe e vecchio materiale bonus. Vi sono anche 3 nuovi album accanto alla ristampa di “Hymns To Victory” e “The Book Of Burning”. Rivelerò più particolari riguardo a questi 3 nuovi album nelle prossime settimane.

Visto che “Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation” ha ormai tre anni, ci possiamo aspettare qualche nuovo album a nome Virgin Steele nei prossimi mesi, al di là di quanto proposto nei box set?

Ti ripeto quanto ho appena detto prima: molto materiale inedito sarà incuso nel Cofanetto di novembre. Sarà una confezione decisamente Epica. Ma se questo non ti basta abbiamo già iniziato a registrare diversi altri nuovi album. La pubblicazione di uno è prevista per il prossimo anno e sarà un Concept Album sull’idea di “The House Of Atreus” o “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell”, più o meno, e quello che verrà rilasciato dopo questo è già diventato della durata di un doppio album ed ha un sapore alla “Autumnal”. Anche “Nocturnes Of Hellfire & Damnation” era un doppio CD con un totale di 29 tracce… quindi, come puoi vedere, siamo sempre al lavoro.


Tra 3 anni la band compirà 40 anni. In poco meno di 4 decadi di carriera con i Virgin Steel avete vissuto l’epoca d’oro del metal, l’avvento di MTV e la sua caduta, l’arrivo del grunge e la morte del metal mainstream, un secondo momento di vitalità del metal. Come ha vissuto la band tutti questi cambiamenti?

Allo stesso modo in cui abbiamo sempre vissuto; non diamo molta considerazione alle tendenze od al favore del mese o dell’anno, scaviamo a fondo e sondiamo le profondità delle nostre anime per recuperare i segreti oscuri dell’Oltretomba, le nostre psichi, le nostre energie e quindi combattiamo con l’Universo per portarli scalcianti ed urlanti alla Luce Del Giorno ed al Buio Della Notte. Questo è un Modo Di Vivere per noi, non una carriera fine a sé stessa. Ci manteniamo su un differente standard e ci siamo dentro per tutta la vita e non solo per una gratificazione momentanea. Ed io credo che sia per questo tipo di determinazione e di dedicazione che noi mostriamo che vi è ancora interesse ed è questo il motivo per cui tutti i nostri album continuano ad essere ristampati. Ogni volta che pubblichiamo qualcosa di completamente inedito o anche quando ristampiamo qualcosa, attiriamo nuove fette di pubblico che non ha mai sentino nominare il nostro Gruppo ed è in continua crescita… personalmente trovo che sia alquanto incredibile e meraviglioso, e sono eternamente grato e riconoscente. Ave!

Concludiamo parlando delle esibizioni dal vivo: con le due ristampe già pronte e la ricorrenza dei 30 anni dall’uscita di “Age Of Consent” possiamo aspettarci di vedere i Virgin Steele dal vivo, magari con un set votato al passato?

Abbiamo sempre cercato di eseguire una selezione varia di tutto il nostro materiale proveniente da tutti gli album, ma chi lo sa, siamo ancora in una fase di pianificazione e di prove sul palco dove testiamo tutti i generi di materiale; quello che funziona meglio a seconda dell’anno… questo è quello che suoniamo. A volte proviamo qualcosa che funziona alla perfezione, altre volte non avviene per qualche motivo e allora mettiamo da parte quella canzone per un po’ e la proviamo di nuovo un altro anno e la Magia ritorna. Quindi non sappiamo mai cosa aspettarci finché non l’abbiamo esplorato a fondo.

Avete già preso in considerazione un’esibizione in Italia a breve?

Speriamo di ritornare ancora una volta nella Gloriosa Italia il prima possibile, è sempre un piacere supremo per noi essere di fronte al Pubblico Italiano! Per gli Dei e le Dee!
