Credo che non esiterei a non fare nulla diversamente... davvero. Credo che tutto ciò che abbiamo fatto fosse necessario. Lo stile musicale degli Amberian Dawn cambia continuamente ed è bello guardare al passato e vedere quanto la nostra musica fosse differente allora. È pur sempre vero che gli Amberian Dawn sono una band alquanto diversa oggi rispetto a quella del 2010. Ma è necessario che una band debba cambiare nel corso degli anni? Questa è una domanda importante e credo che non vi sia nessuna risposta giusta.

In questi sette anni sono capitate molte cose, non mi riferisco solo al cambiamento di etichetta e di cantante... Ti posso chiedere come questi cambiamenti abbiano influenzato l'evoluzione degli Amberian Dawn in questo lasso di tempo e perché?

Ci sono stati molti cambiamenti in formazione ma ora la situazione è stabile da un bel po'. Sono convinto che abbiamo raggiunto la formazione che durerà a lungo. Finora abbiamo pubblicato quattro album con Capri e sembra che questa unione durerà. Il mio stile musicale per quanto riguarda il comporre la musica cambia continuamente. Appare chiaro che ultimamente ho avuto una tendenza verso un metal più leggero. È per questo motivo che ho portato Capri nella formazione degli Amberian Dawn dato che lei è capace di cantare secondo diversi stili con un'eccellente qualità.

Personalmente trovo che "Maybe" sia uno dei brani più orecchiabili dell'intero album. Cosa ci puoi raccontare riguardo alla sua scrittura?

Quella canzone ha una storia interessante. Ho composto il riff principale di tastiere su cui si regge tutto il brano molto tempo fa. Credo che avessi 15 anni o qualcosa del genere quando ho scritto quei riff nel mio studio a casa. Allora (oltre 25 anni fa) ero solito realizzare la musica strumentale tutta da me. Inizialmente con le tastiere e successivamente anche con la chitarra. Quindi l'essenza più profonda di quella canzone è molto vecchia. È buffo quanto facilmente sia stato possibile trasformarla secondo l'attuale stile musicale degli Amberian Dawn.

Non posso fare a meno di pensare agli ABBA mentre ascolto "Sky Is Falling". L'ultima volta avevi ammesso che i membri di quella famosa band svedese erano nella top 5 della tua lista dei desideri per le collaborazioni... vi è una qualche connessione tra le due cose?

"Sky Is Falling", così come "Maybe", sono canzoni molto in stile ABBA. Non posso negare di ammirare tantissimo Benny Andersson degli ABBA e ultimamente ho ascoltato molto le sue produzioni. Il suo musical Chess è stato uno dei miei favoriti degli ultimi tempi. Lo scorso autunno mi è venuta questa idea di provare a trovare un modo per contattare Benny e alla fine ho scoperto che ha uno studio a Stoccolma. Mi è capitato di avere l'opportunità di visitare il suo studio un paio di volte e ho registrato molti pezzi di tastiere con i suoi sintetizzatori ancora del periodo degli ABBA. È stato fantastico, Benny ha utilizzato quelle stesse tastiere negli ultimi album degli ABBA ed anche nel suo musical Chess. Lì ho anche incontrato Benny brevemente.

Continuando a parlare di collaborazioni... sappiamo che quella con Jens Johansonn è stata molto importante nell'ottica di migliorare le tue parti di tastiere e il suono e quindi mi chiedo se vi siano altri artisti, finlandesi o meno, che sono stati un modello fondamentale per la tua carriera?

Jens ha avuto una grande influenza per il mio modo di suonare le tastiere, soprattutto per gli assoli. Un paio di anni fa ho preso il suo settaggio del suono per gli assoli e da quel momento è stato veramente fantastico poter suonare con quella magnifica tonalità di tastiere. Quando ero un ragazzo ed ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra seguivo diversi grandi chitarristi come Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore and Vinnie Moore... giusto per nominarne alcuni.

Attualmente la scena sinfonica finlandese è alquanto saturata da band. Quale credi che sia l'elemento differenziante che la musica degli Amberian Dawn ha da offrire ai propri fan?

Voglio solo creare il mio genere di musica e non seguo più tanto la scena metal. È per questo che non ti posso dire cosa differenzi gli Amberian Dawn... alcune persone ho sentito che dicono che noi stiamo facendo qualcosa di differente, credo che abbia a che fare col fatto che stiamo cambiando lo stile in qualcosa più pop-metal.

"End Of Eden", "Black Circus" e "Darkness Of Eternity"... tutti e tre hanno in comune un profondo contrasto, come se ci fosse un'ombra che aleggia sulla vitalità e positività della tua musica. Per quale motivo è così? Si tratta di un qualcosa intenzionale oppure è una reazione istintiva ai tempi che stiamo vivendo?

Se ti stai riferendo ai testi non ho nulla a che vedere con essi quindi non posso dirne molto. Neanche riguardo alla musica... Faccio sempre quello che mi sembra giusto al momento. Queste sensazioni cambiano spesso. Inoltre ho molti "periodi" per i diversi tipi di musica... un paio di mesi di power metal... poi un paio di mesi di pop-metal... e forse 6 mesi pieni unicamente di splendore sinfonico... è questo il modo che ho sempre seguito. Scrivo molta musica e gli stili cambiamo ogni volta.

Avete appena annunciato il vostro tour europeo ma sfortunatamente non è previsto alcun concerto in Italia nel breve periodo... posso chiederti se avete intenzione di aggiungere prossimamente qualche altra data?

Attualmente ci stiamo concentrando sull'Europa centrale. È possibile che aggiungeremo altri concerti al di fuori di quest'area più avanti nel 2018. Dipende molto anche dai promoter locali, lo sai... non possiamo semplicemente andare in un posto o in un altro e fare un concerto. Abbiamo bisogno di promoter locali che lavorino con noi. Con un po' di fortuna saremo in grado di fare qualche spettacolo anche in Italia. Sarebbe favoloso. Siamo già stati in Italia diverse volte durante i nostri precedenti tour, a supporto di band più grosse.

Avete in programma di suonare anche in qualche festival estivo, forse?

Sì, parteciperemo a qualche festival il prossimo anno. Nessuno di questi spettacoli è già stato annunciato, per ora. Avete un qualche bel festival in Italia? Ci piacerebbe partecipare se fossimo invitati.

Hi Tuomas and welcome back to SpazioRock.it. Our last chat dates back to 2010 for the release of "End Of Eden" which you considered your best work at that stage of your career. What would you like to suggest to your band mates back then, if you had a time machine and the chance to go back in time?

I would not hesitate to do anything differently... really. I think everything we have done is needed to be done. AD's musical style changes all the time and it's nice to look back and see how different our music was back then. It's still true that AD is quite much different bands nowadays as it was in 2010. But should a band change at all during all the years? That's a big question and I think there's just no "right" answer to that.

In these seven years a lot has happen, I mean not only the change of label and singer... May I ask you how these changes have influenced Amberian Dawn evolution in this period of time and why?

There's been a lot of line-up changes but the situation has been very stable for a long time now. I feel like we have achieved the line-up which will last in the future too. We've released 4 albums now with Capri and it seems like this match will last. My musical style of composing music changes all the time. It's still clear that there's been a trend into softer metal recently. That's why I took Capri on AD's line-up because she's able to sing all kinds of styles with excellent quality.

I personally find "Maybe" one of the most catchy tracks of the whole new album. What would you like to tell us regarding its composition?

That song has an interesting history. I composed the main keyboard riff on which the whole song is relying, a long time ago. I think I was 15 years old or something when I wrote those riffs at my home studio. Back then (over 25 years ago) I used to make instrumental music by myself. First with just keyboards and later also with guitar. So, the very essence of that song is really old. It's funny how easily it converted into AD's current musical style.

I can't help thinking about ABBA while listening to "Sky Is Falling". Last time you admitted the members of the famous Swedish band to be in the top 5 names in your "collaboration wishlist"... is this somehow related?

"Sky Is Falling", just like "Maybe" are really ABBA-like songs. I can't deny that I admire Benny Andersson of ABBA very much and have been listening to his productions quite much lately. His musical "Chess" has been one of my latest favourites. Last fall I got this idea to start finding way to contact Benny and finally I found out that he has a studio in Stockholm. So I got a chance to visit his studio a couple of times and recorded a lot of keyboards with his very old ABBA-era synthesizers. It was awesome, Benny used those exact same keyboard sounds on his latest ABBA-records and in Chess-musical too. I also met Benny shortly there.

Still talking about collaborations... we know the one with Jens Johansonn has been important to improve your keyboards parts and sound and I am wondering if there is any other artist, Finnish or not, who has been a fundamental role model for your career?

Jens has been a big influence for my keyboard playing, especially solo playing. I've got his solo sound preset a couple years ago and it's been really great to able to play with that awesome keyboard tone since then. When I was a teenager and started to play guitar, I looked up to several guitar heros like Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore and Vinnie Moore..to name just a few.

Nowadays, the Finnish symphonic scene is kind of saturated. What do you think is the unique element that Amberian Dawn music has to offer to their fans?

I just want to make my own thing and I don't follow the metal scene so much anymore. That's why I really cannot say anything special about AD... I've heard from some people that we're making something differently nowadays, I think it has something to do with changing the style into more "pop-metal" style.

"End Of Eden", "Black Circus" and "Darkness Of Eternity"... they all share a deep contrast, like a shadow hanging on your music vitality and positivity. Why is that? Is this intentional or an instinctive reaction to the times we are living?

I think you're referring to the lyrics? I don't have anything to do our lyrics so I cannot say so much about those. Also about the music... I just do anything that feels right at that moment. And those feelings change a lot. Also, I have a lot of a kind of "seasons" for different kinds of music... A couple of months full of power metal... then a couple of months just pop-metal... and maybe a full 6 six months with full symphonic glory... that's the way it's always been. I make a lot of music and the style changes all the time.

You have just announced your European Tour but unfortunately there is no Italian show on the horizon... May I ask you if you are going to add any other date soon?

We're now concentrating on Central Europe. It's possible that we'll make more shows outside this area later in 2018. It's also about the local promoters, you know... We just cannot go there and there and do shows. We need local promoters which are willing to work with us. Hopefully we're able to do some Italian shows too. Would be great. We've been in Italy several times on our previous tours (while supporting some bigger bands).

Are you going to perform at any summer festival as well, perhaps?

Yes, we're going to be on some festivals next year. Any of those shows aren't announced yet though. Do you have any good festivals there in Italy? We would like to participate if we're invited.
