Credo che la band rappresenti effettivamente un esempio eccellente della combinazione di progressive rock e rock melodico. Penso che questo ci renda abbastanza unici e giustifichi gran parte del nostro successo iniziale.
Successo che in larga parte è scaturito dallla bellezza dei testi di "Heat Of The Moment" e "Only Time Will Tell". Secondo voi, quanto è importante avere delle lyrics di un certo spessore?
John era un maestro nel produrre testi intelligenti e questa divenne una caratteristica molto importante della nostra musica. Non si trattava delle solite storie "ragazzo/ragazza" o di fatine nascoste in un giardino. Quelle che raccontavamo noi erano storie profonde, significative e molto studiate. La maggior parte del credito deve andare a John per aver dato questa impronta ai nostri testi.
La nuova release è dedicata al bellissimo special show del 21 settembre 2013, in occasione del "The Sounds of the Ages festival" nella cornice del magnifico IInd Century Roman Theater di Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In alcuni memorabili momenti siete stati accompagnati dalla Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. Questa registrazione è una potente testimonianza e un bellissimo ricordo della line-up con tutti i membri originali (John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes insieme a Sam Coulson alla chitarra). Qual è stata la tua parte preferita di questo particolare evento?
E' stato meraviglioso avere l'opportunità di suonare con un'orchestra e ascoltare le nostre canzoni tradotte su strumenti orchestrali. L'ambientazione dell'Anfiteatro è stata la parte più magica, si può quasi percepire la massiccia quantità di storia che quel luogo detiene.
Voi della band avete un legame molto solido, siete grandi amici oltre ad essere colleghi, Sul Vostro sito web si legge un messaggio molto toccante sulla scomparsa di John. "It is the end of an era for all of us. But we will soldier on - the music of John Wetton needs to be heard loud and clear from the rooftops." Molti fans sperano che vi mettiate alla ricerca di una nuova voce per continuare l'eredità di Wetton in futuro.
John ed io eravamo come fratelli, e non solo sul palco, e siamo sempre rimasti uniti. Perderlo per me è stato un durissimo colpo, avevamo una sintonia musicale pazzesca. Mentre John era malato, Billy Sherwood era stato incaricato di sostituirlo in sua assenza. Sfortunatamente John non è mai tornato, e grazie a Billy cercheremo di tenere viva la sua splendida eredità musicale.
Il classico degli ASIA "Heat of the Moment" è stato utilizzato per uno spot del Super Bowl 2017 per pubblicizzare la serie TV "Lethal Weapon." Qual è stato il più bel tributo dei fans in onore di John?
Le emozioni sono state straripanti, immense... moltissimi fans hanno tributato John anche in maniera molto commovente... quando ascolti la sua musica, e parliamo di un catalogo sconfinato, è impossibile non sentirsi coinvolti.
Negli anni '80 ci fu un periodo davvero d'oro per il Vostro genere musicale. Com'è cambiata la scena e cosa diresti a un giovane musicista che vuole creare oggi qualcosa di immortale?
Putroppo non ci sono scorciatoie per l'originalità o la longevità nella musica. E' essenziale una dedizione assoluta, e un talento che deve spiccare ed essere consolidato nel modo giusto... ma badate bene, ci saranno moltissimi ostacoli lungo la strada. Più sforzo e fatica investite, maggiore sarà la possibilità di avere successo... semplicemente: non mollate mai!
Qual è il più bel ricordo che hai legato alla band e quale consideri l'esempio del vostro più grande traguardo?
Condividere il palco con alcuni dei più grandi artisti del Regno Unito è stato e sarà sempre un vanto. Tutti quei concerti sono ricordi inedelebili.
Prima di salutarci, ti andrebbe di lasciare un messaggio per i vostri fans italiani e per i lettori di SpazioRock?
So per certo che abbiamo dei fans molto affezionati in Italia, quindi vorrei ringraziarli per il sostegno che ci hanno sempre dato. Vi prometto che terremo viva la musica degli ASIA e speriamo che continuerete ad amarla tanto quanto noi amiamo suonarla.

ASIA not only embodies very well a fairly large concept of "classic rock" but also falls under the category of progressive rock. I think this approach allows you the freedom to do anything you prefer with your music and music has to strike a chord somewhere. What was your biggest hope when you started delivering your message to the world?
I believe ASIA is a great example of combining Progressive musicianship with accessible and melodic rock songs. I think we are fairly unique in this respect and it accounts largely for our initial success.
You wouldn't have been successful in the first place if people hadn't listened to what was being said in "Heat Of The Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell". In your opinion, how important is to have good lyrics?
John was a master of intelligent lyrics and it became a very important feature of ASIA's music. These were not just boy-girl stuff, or even about fairies in the bottom of the garden. Our lyrics are deep, meaningful and very well thought out. The majority of credit must go to John for steering all these through.

What was your favorite part of this particular event?
It was great playing with an orchestra, and hearing our songs translated onto orchestral instruments. The setting of the Amphitheatre was very beautiful, and you could sense the massive amount of history that that place holds.
You surely have a solid foundation, you are good personal friends as well as colleagues. On your website there is a very touching statement about John's death. "It is the end of an era for all of us. But we will soldier on - the music of John Wetton needs to be heard loud and clear from the rooftops." So let me ask you: do you plan to find a new voice to continue his heritage in the future?
John and I were like brothers. We hit it off straight away, and remained close friends throughout. It has saddened me a great deal to lose him, as we had such a great friendship and musical understanding. Whilst John was sick, he appointed Billy Sherwood to take over his role in his absence. Sadly, his return was not to be, but Billy has stepped in and as we all are, paying our respects to John's wonderful legacy of music.
ASIA's classic hit "Heat of the Moment" was immortalized in a 2017 Super Bowl commercial for the new TV series "Lethal Weapon." What is the most beautiful tribute made by fans to your lost friend John Wetton?
The outpouring of emotions has been immense, and many of the fans have made their own tributes, many of which are very moving. When you hear the music of John, and look at his enormous catalogue of great music, it is impossible not to be touched by all that.
In the 1980s, everything went global and everything went mega. How has the rock scene been changing and what would you say to a very young and talented musician who wants to create something immortal?
There is no quick fix to achieve longevity or originality in music. It requires total dedication and a talent that needs to be harnessed in the right way, but, you have to be prepared to hit some problems along the way. Input is output. The more effort you put in, the more likely the chance of success. Simply - never give up!
What's the most beautiful memory related to ASIA you will bring with you forever and what you consider to be the band greatest achievement?
Being on stage with some of the greatest rock musicians the UK has ever produced was and is always a great buzz - all those shows and memories that cannot be taken away from you.
