La nuova era degli Stratovarius che inizia con Polaris e va fino a Eternal, per ora, vi sta dando grandi soddisfazioni, la band sembra davvero affiatata in questo momento. È così?

Sì, è assolutamente così. È un po' diverso da molto tempo fa. Il nostro pubblico è diverso, la scena rock è diversa. Quindi, ovviamente, anche qualcosa in noi è diverso. Ma in generale, anche se alcune cose sono diverse c'è una bella atmosfera nella band. A volte, quando ci sono dei cambiamenti drastici di line up è possibile che succedano cose spiacevoli, ma siamo soddisfatti in questo momento, così come lo eravamo con la line up precedente. È una bella atmosfera e ce la stiamo cavando bene. Siamo pronti per un nuovo disco, abbiamo tutto ciò che ci serve, come l'ispirazione e tutte quelle cose che servono per scrivere un nuovo album.

A proposito di nuovi album, state già lavorando sul successore di Eternal? Puoi rivelare qualcosa in anteprima ai lettori di SpazioRock?

Sì, siamo ancora alla prima fase di scrittura. Tutti stanno cercando di scrivere qualcosa. Io ho anche altri progetti in questo momento, come i Rainbow. Siamo tutti un po' concentrati anche su progetti al di fuori della band. Magari per l'anno prossimo riusciremo a mettere insieme qualcosa. È questo il piano.

SpazioRock.it è uno dei magazine di più grande successo in Italia e quest'anno sta ricevendo molto consenso. Si terrà quest'anno la prima edizione del festival di SpazioRock.it (QUI IL SITO UFFICIALE DEL FESTIVAL), di cui voi sarete gli headliner e durante il quale condividerete il palco con grandi band come i Powerwolf, i Rhapsody e tante altre. Cosa pensate di questo festival? Ti va di invitare i vostri fan italiani e i tuoi amici a questo evento?

Sì, certamente! Ogni volta suonare in Italia è bellissimo. Non vedo l'ora di tornare, sarà davvero divertente. Spero che ci sia tanta gente, ovviamente. Più gente ce n'è, più è bella la festa!

In tanti si chiedono se il concerto sarà basato sul Best Of. Puoi confermarlo? Suonerete anche il brano inedito?

No, credo che sarà basato più sugli ultimi lavori in generale che sul Best Of. Penso che uno dei motivi per cui abbiamo fatto questo Best Of è che la nostra vecchia etichetta Noise Records era stata venduta alla Sanctuary e la Sanctuary a sua volta alla Universal. Ci è voluto molto, ma alla fine tutti i nostri dischi sono della nostra attuale etichetta tedesca, la Edel. Abbiamo fatto questo Best Of per celebrare il fatto che ora tutte le nostre canzoni sono sotto lo stesso ombrello. Non pensiamo a questo Best Of come "Ehi, abbiamo fatto un Best Of!". Ovviamente essendo una band siamo molto più concentrati su un prossimo disco. Al momento non siamo così presi dalla scrittura, sai io ho quelle date con i Rainbow a cui devo stare dietro. Saranno a giugno. E poi ci sono altri problemi in questo momento. Per esempio, lo studio del nostro chitarrista Mathias si trasferisce, e questo sarà un po' un problema. Ci sono tanti piccoli fattori in gioco, ma penso che questo Best Of non sarà il tema centrale dei nostri prossimi show. Saranno show abbastanza classici ed essenziali. È Timo a scegliere la scaletta. Tutto qui.

È di pochi mesi fa la notizia della tua collaborazione con i nuovi Rainbow di Blackmore, parteciperai come musicista a dei concerti storici prossimamente. Come vi siete messi in contatto tu e Ritchie?

Questa nuova collaborazione nasce dal fatto che io ho suonato nei Blackmore's Night, anche se è stato tantissimo tempo fa, tipo 20 anni fa. Credo che semplicemente Ritchie e Candice si ricordassero di me, quindi mi hanno chiamato. In realtà mi ha chiamato il loro manager. Ero contentissimo di quello che mi stava chiedendo. So già tutte le canzoni ed era stato molto bello suonare con Ritchie, quindi ho detto sì immediatamente.

Sono possibili un album e un tour con i Rainbow?

Oh no, non credo, anche se dipende da Ritchie. Se si trova di nuovo bene a suonare con me, penso che faremo altre date, altrimenti ci saranno solo queste due. Dipende anche da quanto saremo validi come band, quindi se saremo una buona band, oppure no.

Abbiamo in serbo per te alcune domande dei lettori che saranno presenti al Festival il 24 settembre:

Massimo: Hai mai pensato, durante la tua carriera, di cimentarti con il canto? Magari un duetto con Timo o una canzone da solista. Suonerete dal vivo 'We Hold The Key' e 'Glory Of the World' nel prossimo tour?

Abbiamo già suonato 'We Hold The Key' qualche volta. 'Glory Of The World' invece no, forse, ma non saprei dirti esattamente, non posso dirti né sì né no. È più probabile che si suoni 'Glory Of The World'. Per quanto riguarda il canto, no... non c'è spazio per questo nella mia carriera.

Edoardo: Ti piacerebbe fare parte di una band composta da membri di band power metal storiche (oltre agli Stratovarius) come Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray?

Penso che a volte possa essere divertente, magari solo per un disco. Ma se per esempio hai un progetto parallelo, questo non dura più di un disco o al massimo due. Per quanto riguarda le band, be', non ho nessun progetto oltre agli Stratovarius in mente. Sai, i nostri impegni diventano sempre di più. Sarebbe davvero difficile organizzarsi con un'altra band. Non so come potrebbe funzionare, sarebbe molto difficile.

Andrea: Quanto ti manca il contributo di Timo Tolkki al processo creativo?

Se penso al passato, mi manca molto ovviamente. Ha lasciato la band nel 2008, ma suoniamo ancora alcune canzoni scritte da lui durante i concerti. È ancora una parte molto importante della band grazie ad alcune delle canzoni grandiose che ha scritto prima di lasciare la band. Al momento non è parte del processo creativo ovviamente.

Francesca: Dovremmo aspettarci altre sorprese oltre alla traccia inedita per settembre?

Altre sorprese? Penso che ci saranno altre sorprese. Stiamo lavorando con Edel per pubblicare qualcosa a breve. Vogliamo ristampare dei vecchi lavori con Edel, che sono ormai esauriti in alcune zone. Stiamo pensando di lavorare su vecchie bonus track e b-side da aggiungere ai dischi che pubblicheremo. Vogliamo fare qualcosa a riguardo ora che abbiamo tutto il nostro materiale sotto uno stesso gruppo. C'è dell'ottimo materiale nella nostra discografia prima di Polaris. Scrivevamo molto e davvero velocemente ai tempo. Siamo un po' spaventati dal fatto che alcune vecchie canzoni tendano ad essere dimenticate. Vediamo cosa può saltare fuori con queste nuove edizioni. Magari pubblicheremo due dischi insieme, non so, non so bene come funzionerà. Abbiamo anche pensato di riregistrare qualcosa, magari solo io e Timo, piano e voce. Ci saranno delle belle sorprese.

Stratovarius new era, which starts with Polaris and ends, at least so far, with Eternal is giving you a lot of success. You bandmates look closer now. Is it as it seems?

Yes, it actually is. It is different form the old days. I think that our audience is different, and I think that the rock scene in different. So, of course, something of us is different. But in general, even if some things are different there's a very good mood in the band. Sometimes bad things happen when a line up changes, but in general we're all happy, and it was the same thing with the previous line up. It's a good mood and we're doing quite ok. Records sales down. We are now able to make a new album, we still have all we need to make a new album, like inspiration and all the things we need.

Talking about recors, are you already working on Eternal successor? Can you anticipate anything to SR readers?

It's only still in the writing stage. I think everyone of us is trying to write some stuff. I also have some work to do with Rainbow. We are all focused on other projects outside of the band at the same time. Maybe next year we'll be able to put together a new album, that's the plan.

SpazioRock is one of the most successfull magazines in Italy, and it's acheiving a great deal this year: we're going to have the first edition of our festival (FESTIVAL OFFICIAL SITE). As you already know, Stratovarius will be our headliner, and then Powerwolf, Rhapsody and many more successfull band are going to be on stage. What do you think about it? Would you like to invite your Italian fans and friends to the festival?

Yes of course. Every time playing in Italy is a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it, it will be fun. I'm hoping that a lot of people show up of course. The more people show up, the better the party is.

Many people are wandering whether the concert setlist will be based on the Best Of. Can you confirm this? Are you going to play the unedited song?

No, I think it's gonna be based a little bit more on the most recent albums, than on the Best Of. I think that the Best Of that we have made now is due to the fact that Noise Records got sold to Sanctuary and Sanctuary got sold to Universal. It took us a long time but in the end we gave our old records to our current label in Germany which is called Edel. The reason why we are doing now this Best Of is celebrating that we have all our songs under the same umbrella. It's not like we're taking this Best Of like "Oh man! We're doing a Best Of". We're obviously, as a band, focusing on a new album. We're not like super busy writing at the moment, of course. I'm having those gigs with Rainbow to take care of. It's gonna be in June, and we have some other issues too. Our guitar player Mathias studio is moving to a different location, so we're gonna have some trouble with it. There are many little things coming into play. But I think that this Best Of is not the main theme for our fourthcoming live shows. I think it's gonna be more like a classic essential show. It's Timo's responsibility to make the setlist. And that's it.

A few months ago, the news about your collaboration with Blackmore's new Rainbow was spread and in a month you'll be playing a lot of historical concerts. How did you get in touch with him?

I think that this collaboration is due to the fact that I played with Blackmore's Night, even if it was like 20 years ago. I think that they just remembered me, you know, Ritchie and Candice, so they just called me. Actually their manager called me, in fact. It was great to hear that, I know all the songs already. It was great to play with them, so I immediately said yes.

Is it likely that you'll be releasing an album and then touring with Rainbow?

Oh no, I don't really think so, even if it is up to Ritchie. If he thinks it's fun to play with me, maybe there are going to be other gigs, otherwise we're having just these two gigs. It also depends on how good the band is. If we're a good band, or maybe if we're not.

Readers' questions:

Massimo: Have you ever thought - during your whole career - about dealing with the singing? Maybe a duet song with Timo or a song in which you sing solo? Are you going to play 'We hold the key' and 'Glory of the world' in the upcoming tour?

'We hold the key' is something that we've played a few times. 'Glory of the world' maybe not, but of course I don't know exactely, I can't tell you yes or no. It is more likely that we play 'We hold the key'. As for the singing... no. There will be no singing in my career.

Edoardo: Would you enjoy being part of a band whose members are from memorable power metal bands in addition to Strato like: Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray?

I think that sometimes is fun, maybe just for one record. But if, for example, you have a side project band it doesn't last for more that one or two records. As for the bands, I don't have any plan outside Stratovarius. You know, our schedule becomes more and more busy. It would be too hard to coordinate to be in another band. I don't know where it would end up. It would be very difficult.

Andrea: How much do you miss Timo Tolkki contribution to the creative process?

Back in old days very much, of course. He left the band in 2008. We still play some of his songs during our live shows. He's still somehow a big part of the band for some of the great songs he wrote before leaving. At the moment he's not part of the creative process, of course.

Francesca: Should we expect more surprises apart from the original track for September? Why did you decide to release a Best Of?

More surprises? I think there are gonna be some other surprises. I think we're working with Edel to release something. We're trying to print some old work with Edel, that run out of print in some territories. We're working on some old bonus tracks to inglobe with this releases. We want to do something about this now that all our material is under one group. There's a lot of good material in the albums we published before Polaris. We used to write a lot and fast back then. We were afraid of the fact that some of the old songs tend to be forgotten. So we will see what we come up with with the new editions. Maybe we'll publish two records in one package, I don't know, I'm not sure how this will work. We thought about re recording something, maybe just me and Timo on piano and vocals. I think there might be some surprises.
