"Silence Is The Only Sound" suona un pò più rock rispetto ai tuoi dischi precedenti. Non si trova in qualche modo in conflitto positivo con il titolo?

Sì davvero (ride, ndr)! Ne abbiamo parlato molto prima di decidere il titolo. Ma poi ho sentito che l'ultimo brano dell'album, chiamato "Silence Is The Only Sound", riassume e abbraccia molti temi del disco, quindi ho deciso che doveva essere il titolo.

L'ultima volta ci hai detto che "To The North" era un tributo alla tua terra e alle tue radici. Cos'hai messo a fuoco questa volta?

Questo è verissimo e non ho ancora cambiato completamente questa prospettiva; per la creazione del nuovo album ho trascorso del tempo tra le montagne della Norvegia. Da sola nel paesaggio in inverno. Dove in realtà potevo sentire il silenzio. Quindi inizi ad ascoltare le voci nella tua testa e appare la musica. La mia attenzione si è focalizzata a livello personale: temi come la fede, la perdita, l'amore, credere in qualcosa di più grande di te, ed essere una piccola parte nel puzzle enorme e complesso che è la vita.

Il "silenzio" a cui ti riferisci è in qualche modo collegato a ciò che ti ha tenuta fuori dalle scene per quasi dieci anni?

Beh, non sono sicura di questo. Ma sono stata certamente silenziosa per molti anni in termini musicali e canori. 

Che cosa ti è mancato di più durante quel periodo?

Soprattutto mi mancava scrivere nuovi brani. Sedersi e scrivere canzoni è per me una cosa totalmente fluida. In quei momenti perdo ogni senso del tempo e dello spazio. E mi mancava cantare, usare la mia voce. Ed esibirmi dal vivo, incontrando persone che hanno assimilato nel loro cuore la musica che scrivo e che sgorga direttamente dal mio. Persone che hanno così tante storie interessanti.

... e ora, c'è qualcosa in particolare che ti manca di quella pausa?

Una bella domanda! Mi manca avere più tempo con la mia famiglia a essere onesti. Faccio fatica a trovare un buon equilibrio, a vederli abbastanza, ma continuo ad andare avanti con ciò che amo fare nel mondo della musica.

Come spieghi la scelta di rifare "Spindelsinn" in inglese ("Spellbound")? Non pensi che la traduzione possa causare la perdita di alcune delle sue sfumature originali e tipicamente nordiche?

Sì, certo che questo è un pericolo. Ma volevo onorare la canzone e il ventesimo anniversario di "Spindelsinn", il mio primo singolo da solista. Quindi ho colto l'occasione! Ho scritto nuovi testi e nuovi arrangiamenti musicali. E sono abbastanza contenta di come è venuta. Ma quando canto dal vivo, è soprattutto il testo norvegese che appare, anche quando provo a fare un mix tra il vecchio e il nuovo testo. Non è facile cambiarlo dopo tutti questi anni.

La tua musica sembra mescolare molti stili e generi diversi e ha subito molti cambiamenti nel corso degli anni. Vorresti spiegare quali sono le tue influenze più importanti?

Sì (ride, ndr). Sono forse un po' schizofrenica quando si tratta di stili musicali. Ma ho goduto di influenze da diversi punti di vista nel corso degli anni: metal, rock, musica classica, folk, e tutto ciò è stato parte di me durante la mia carriera musicale

Tra le diverse collaborazioni con musicisti internazionali molto importanti, quali sono quelli che hanno influenzato maggiormente la tua essenza di artista? 

Bene, quello che è stato davvero importante per il mio ritorno in musica è stato Tuomas Holopainen. Quando l'ho incontrato per la prima volta, ero nella mia lunga pausa, e non ero nemmeno sicura se sarei mai tornata a fare musica. Erano passati 8 anni. Collaborare con lui sulla cover dei The 3rd And the Mortal, ovvero "Why So Lonely", è stato davvero stimolante e ha segnato il mia ritorno nella musica. Gli sono davvero grata per questo.

Un paio di anni fa stavi lavorando a un progetto chiamato The Sirens con Anneke Van Giersbergen e Liv Kristine. Pensi che potrebbe esserci la possibilità di rivedere voi ragazze o la cosa si è definitivamente arenata?

Siamo stati tutte molto bene nelle The Sirens! Non ne sono sicura, non ci sono ancora piani concreti per fare di più con le The Sirens. Siamo tutte impegnate con altri progetti ora.

Quali sono i tuoi piani per il futuro? Presumo tu stia ancora uscendo nel mondo "chasing rivers"... Qual è la tua forza trainante per farlo?

La canzone "Chasing Rivers" del mio nuovo album parla di come alcune persone tendano sempre a precipitare nell'ignoto, e lo cercano anche se sanno che feriranno coloro che amano. Come gli alpinisti, per esempio. Quando sei là fuori, vuoi solo tornare sano e salvo, e una volta che sei tornato a casa, vuoi farlo di nuovo. Forse questa forza trainante è quella che ho anch'io, ma in termini di altri progetti. E forse questa forza trainante è una parte vitale di chi sei come persona. I miei piani per il futuro non sono ancora decisi. Sono in vena di pianificazione in questo momento.

Non vediamo l'ora che arrivi il tuo spettacolo a Milano. Cosa hai in serbo per i tuoi fan italiani? Il tuo approccio all'esecuzione si è in qualche modo evoluto ultimamente?

Grazie mille, anche io non vedo l'ora! Sarà uno spettacolo acustico, incentrato sulle canzoni, i testi e le melodie in un ambiente intimo. Ho messo insieme canzoni di molti dei miei album precedenti, da "Spindelsinn" in poi fino al mio nuovo album. Sì, credo che il mio modo di cantare sia migliorato nel corso degli anni, e forse la mia fiducia sul palco. Non sono così nervosa quando esco sul palco ora come nei miei primi anni. Potrei stare fuori molto tempo prima dello spettacolo. Sono sempre nervosa prima di andare sul palco adesso, ma non più malata. 

C'è un luogo insolito e significativo in cui sogni di esibirti, ma non ne hai ancora avuto la possibilità?

Mi piacerebbe molto creare una scenografia speciale per un concerto una volta. Vorrei andare su un'isola nel mare e allestire un piccolo palco lì. Tutti quelli che volessero venire allo show dovrebbero andare in barca. E quando arriva la sera, e dobbiamo tornare tutti indietro, viaggeremmo nella stessa barca e condivideremmo del buon cibo e bevande.

Hello Kari! Welcome back to SpazioRock.it! How are you?

Thank you so much, I am good: so looking forward to playing in Milan thursday the 30th of November! It is very good to be back to SpazioRock.it.

"Silence Is The Only Sound" sounds a little more rock than your previous records. Isn't this somehow in a positive conflict with the title?

Yes, indeed (laughs, ndr)! We talked about that a lot before deciding on the title. But, then I felt that the last track of the album, called "Silence Is The Only Sound", in many ways sums up and embraces many of the themes on the album, so then I decided that it should be the title.

Last time you told us that "To The North" was a tribute to your land and your roots. What did you bring into focus this time?

This is very true, and I still have not completely changed that perspective: for the making of the new album time I spent time in the mountains of Norway. Alone in the landscape in winter. Where actually I could hear silence. Then you start listening to the voices in your head and music appears. My focus has been on a personal level: themes like faith, loss, love, believing in something bigger than yourself, and being a small part in the huge and complex puzzle that life is.

Is the "silence" you're referring to somehow linked to the one that had kept you out of the scenes for almost ten years?

Well, I am not sure if I could put it down as this. But, I was certainly silent for many years in terms of music-making and singing.

What is it that you had been missing the most during that period?

Most of all, I missed writing new songs. To sit down and write songs is totally a flow thing for me. That is when I lose all sense of time and space. And I missed to sing, using my voice. And to perform live, meeting people that has taken music that I write from the heart into their heart. People that have so many interesting stories.

... and now, is there anything in particular that you miss about that break?

A very good question! I miss having more time with my family to be honest. I struggle to find the good balance, to see them enough but still go on with what I love doing in the music-world.

How do you explain the choice of remaking "Spindelsinn" in English ("Spellbound")? Don't you think the translation may result in losing some of its original, and typically nordic, sinister nuances?

Yes, of course that is a danger to that. But, I wanted to honor the song, and the 20 years anniversary of "Spindelsinn", my first single as a solo-artist. So I took the chance! I made new lyrics and new musical arrangements. And I am quite happy with how it turned out. But when I sing it live, it is mostly the Norwegian lyrics that appears, even when I try to make a mix of the old and new lyrics. Not easy to change it after all these years 

Your music seems to mash up a lot of very different styles and genres it and has been varying a lot through the years. Would you like to explain what are your most important influences?

Yes (laughs, ndr). I am maybe a bit schizophrenic when it comes to different music styles. But, I have been enjoying influences from many different angles over the years: metal, rock, classical music, folk-music, and that has been a part of me through my musical career.

Among the different collaborations you did with very important international musicians, which are the ones that influenced the most your essence as an artist?

Well, the one that was really important for my comeback in music was Tuomas Holopainen. When I first met him, I was on my long break, and I wasn't even sure if I was ever going back to doing music. It had been 8 years. Collaboration with him on "Why So Lonely", cover of The 3d And The Mortal, was really inspiring, and marked my way back to music. I am really grateful to him for that.

A couple of years ago you were working on a project called "The Sirens" with Anneke Van Giersbergen and Liv Kristine. Do you think there could be the chance to see you girls together again or is it definitively ran aground?

We all had a very good time in "The Sirens"! I am not sure, there are no concrete plans as of yet of doing more of "The Sirens". We are all busy with other projects now.

What are your plans for the future? I assume you would be still going out in the world chasing rivers... What is your driving force, to do so, in this morning you sing about?

The song "Chasing Rivers" from my new album deals with how some people always tend to rush into the unknown, and seeking out even though they know it will hurt the ones they love. Like mountaineers for instance. When you are out there, you just want to come safely home, and once you have come home you want out again. Maybe this is a driving force is what I have too, but in terms of other projects. And maybe this driving force is a vital part of who you are as a person. My plans for the future are not decided yet. I am in planning mood at the moment. 

We are so looking forward to your show in Milan. I am sure your Italian fans can't wait for it. What Kari are they going to see on stage? Has your approach to performing somehow evolved in lately?

Thank you so much, I am very much looking forward too! It will be an acoustic show, focusing on the songs, lyrics and melodies in an intimate setting. I have put together songs from many of my previous albums, from Spindelsinn and onwards to my new album. Yes, I believe that my singing has improved over the years, and my confidence on stage maybe. I am not so nervous to go out on stage now as I was in my earlier years. I could be so out of it a long time before the show. I am always nervous before I go on stage now also, but not sick anymore.

Is there a unusual and significant place where you dream of performing but you haven't had the chance yet?

I would very much like to create a special setting for a concert once. I would go to an island out in the sea and set up a little stage there. All who wanted to come to the show would have to go by boat. And when the evening came, and we all had to go back, we would travel in the same boat and share some nice food and drink.
