Ho sempre avuto la sensazione che Ralf potesse regalarci una performance eccezionale su questo brano; era in cantiere da tre anni, finché abbiamo trovato il posto giusto per presentare la nostra versione. È ancora vicina all'originale, ma con il marchio Primal Fear e trasformata in una traccia di metal melodico.

L'album inizia con una traccia strumentale, "Area 16", che suona come un'introduzione a un film o a un videogioco apocalittico e poi continua con l'attacco esplosivo di riff di "Predator". Entrambe queste tracce e "Thrill Of Speed" condividono gli elementi che mi aspetterei da voi: fraseggi energici e linee vocali inconfondibili. Come sono nate queste canzoni, così fresche e potenti? Pensi che possano essere un buon passo avanti per un prossimo album?

Sia io che Magnus siamo davvero molto coinvolti in colonne sonore e tracce sinfoniche e amiamo esplorare varie possibilità. "Area 16" ne è un ottimo esempio: una traccia molto atmosferica per iniziare il disco. "Predator" e "Thrill Of Speed" sono due brani nuovissimi che abbiamo composto particolarmente per questo platter. Beh, a essere onesti, abbiamo scritto 25 canzoni per il prossimo LP dei Primal Fear e siamo ancora impegnati nei cambiamenti e nella creazione di ulteriori parti. Continueremo seguendo esattamente il percorso di "Rulebreaker", forse un po' più oscuro e leggermente più rabbioso. Queste due canzoni potrebbero essere parte del nuovo album dei Primal Fear, ma siccome siamo molto onesti, sono state scritte per "Best Of Fear".

Gran parte del secondo disco è sicuramente epico. Inizia con lo slancio vocale di Simone Simons che aggiunge un livello alla brillante "Everytime It Rains". Cosa puoi dirci riguardo a questa collaborazione?

Beh, questo è molto importante per noi, perché siamo ambiziosi e il lato maggiormente prog dei Primal Fear è essenziale per noi e continueremo a scrivere questo tipo di canzoni. È sempre una grande sfida e ne necessitiamo soprattutto per restare musicisti felici. Simone vive nei pressi della nostra città natale ed è per noi una delle migliori tre cantanti di oggi. È stato un assoluto piacere realizzare questa traccia con lei e ne siamo tutti molto orgogliosi. Peccato non aver potuto realizzare un video per il pezzo.

Un'altra ospite è Liv Kristine per l'eccellente "Born With A Broken Heart": la sua interpretazione conferisce alla pista una diversa sfumatura. Possiamo forse considerarla una delle cantanti più eclettiche dell'attuale scena metal? Come è ricaduta la scelta su di lei?

Liv vive vicino Stoccarda e ci vediamo di tanto in tanto solo nei festival, sebbene si voli dallo stesso aeroporto. E' stato veramente un piacere aggiungere il suo colore vocale pulito e acuto a questa canzone, davvero magnifico.

La band è composta da sei musicisti: un imponente muro di suoni grazie alla presenza di tre chitarre. Perché ne avete aggiunto un'altra ora in modo costante?

Magnus non è in grado di essere in tour a lungo per questioni private. Siamo un gruppo dalle date numerose e abbiamo suonato in più di cento spettacoli nel 2016. Con Tom (Naumann, ndr) e Alex (Beyrodt, ndr) abbiamo due delle migliori squadre di chitarra del mondo. Il nostro punto di vista sociale non ci permette di licenziare nessuno di tali grandi ragazzi perché siamo una famiglia e nessuno di loro tre merita un cattivo trattamento. Così abbiamo deciso di procedere in questo modo, ovvero che Magnus sarà comunque parte della band e apparirà di tanto in tanto sul palco con noi, come  quest'anno nello Sweden Rock Festival.

Judas Priest, Helloween e Accept sono state band di grande ispirazione per voi, ma siete stati capaci di trovare un suono originale e riconoscibile. Qual è l'aspetto della loro musica che vi ha più attratto?

Abbiamo imparato dai Judas Priest l'uso della chitarra, i riff e alcune performance vocali veramente potenti dal 1978 al 1991, dagli Helloween la velocità unita alla melodia e dagli Accept l'attitudine a dare ogni sera il 200% sul palco.

Negli ultimi due anni siete stati piuttosto occupati in giro per il mondo. Avete già iniziato a pianificare eventuali spettacoli futuri per il 2018, magari in Italia?

Ritorneremo a far parte del bill della crociera 70.000 Tons Of Metal nel febbraio del 2018, poi faremo il fantastico tour annuale Rock Meets Classic in aprile. Abbiamo già confermato otto festival open air per l'estate e abbiamo intenzione di girare il mondo in settembre con il nuovo album già pubblicato e sarebbe un piacere suonare ancora una volta in Italia, anche perché abbiamo un batterista italiano!

In 2006, you published your first best of compilation “Metal Is Forever - The Very Best Of Primal Fear”, containing a bunch of songs from the Nuclear Blast era, precisely from your first album up to “Seven Seals”. Now, you're releasing “Best Of Fear”, including also the  material from the Frontiers years, from “New Religion” to your latest record “Rulebreaker”. What were the most significant moments of your career so far? And what have you learnt from them?

The most significant moment is just the subject, that 3 guys started this band 20 years ago and these three guys are still in the band. This is for us the nicest aspect of all. The next very important fact is that the band really improved on stage during the last 4 years. I can’t remember one bad show, but a lot of very strong shows. The attitude to give every show 200% is the right one and we can deliver. I won’t pick up single moments now, just the fact I’m feeling great with the current status satisfies.

This double album demonstrates, once again, how the band is diverse lyrically and musically. Although science fiction and fantasy flow through this release, the lyrics are rooted in some concerns related to modern life. How important has been the heterogeneity of the songwriting in Primal Fear success? And how do you usually deal with this aspect of your work?

Our main target for new lyrics are to catch the atmosphere and content of the music. It's important that the lyrics match to the song. As two guys mainly write the lyrics in the band it could of course drive into two directions, even you two very different characters as myself and Ralf (Scheepers, Ed.). The music is mostly written by myself and Magnus (Karlsson, Ed.) and is really an equal match and still very creative all over the years. 

The first disc consists of sixteen power/speed metal songs including three brand new tracks and an amazing version of Heart's "If Looks Could Kill". What drove you to chose this song?

I always had the vision that Ralf could give us all a killer performance on this song and it was in making since three years, since we've found the right spot to present our version. It's still close to the original, but with the Primal Fear trademarks and transformed into a melodic metal track. 

The album starts off with an instrumental track, "Area 16", that sounds like the intro to an apocalyptic movie or video game and then leads into the explosive riff attack of "Predator". Both these tracks and "Thrill Of Speed" share the elements that I would expect from you: strong riffs and unmistakable vocals. How did these songs, so fresh and powerful, were born? Do you think they can be a good step forward for a new album?

Both Magnus and I are very much into these soundtrack and symphonic and we love to fool around with possibilities. "Area 16" is a nice example for this and a very atmospheric track to start the album. "Predator" and "Thrill Of Speed" are two brand new tracks we wrote especially for this album. Well to be honest, we've written 25 songs for the new forthcoming Primal Fear studio album and still into changes and writing new parts. We will continue exactly in the path of "Rulebreaker", maybe a little bit darker and a slice more angry. But these two songs could be a part of the new PF album, but as we are very straight were written for the "Best Of Fear" album. 

Much of the second disc is definitely epic. It begins with Simone Simons soaring vocals adding an extra layer to the brilliant "Everytime It Rains". What can you tell us regarding this collaboration?

Well this is very important for us, because we're ambitioned musicians and the more prog side of the Primal Fear songs are essential for us and we will continue to write these songs. It's always a big challenge and we need especially this challenge to stay happy musicians. Simone is living close to our hometown and she is for our taste one of the top 3 female singers today. It was an absolutely pleasure to realize this song with her and we're all very proud of the song. Shame we couldn't realize a video clip for the song. 

Another guest of yours is Liv Kristine for the excellent "Born With A Broken Heart": her interpretation gives the track a different shade. Can we perhaps consider her one of the most eclectic singers of the current metal scene? How did you get to chose her?

Liv lives close to Stuttgart too and we usually see each other from time to time on festivals. Even if you fly from the same airport. It was really nice to add her clean and very high vocal color to this song, just beautiful. 

The band is made up of six musicians: a really impressive wall of sound thanks to the presence of three guitars. Why did you add another guitar now steadily?

Magnus is not able to go on longer tours regarding his family status. We are a busy touring band and played more than a hundred shows in 2016. With Tom (Naumann, Ed.) and Alex (Betroydt, Ed,) we have two of the best guitar teams in the world. Our social point of view doesn't allow us to fire any of these great guys because we are a family and not one of these three guys deserve a bad treatment. So we've decided to go this way, that Magnus is in the band and will appear from time to time on stage with the band, like we practiced on this years Sweden Rock Festival. 

Judas Priest, Helloween and Accept have been bands of great inspiration to you but you were able to find an original and recognizable sound. What aspect of their music has attracted you the most?

We've learnt from Judas Priest about the guitar the riffs and some really strong vocal performances from 1978 to 1991, from Helloween the speed with melody and from Accept the attitude to give every night 200% on stage. 

In the last couple of years you have been quite busy touring around the world. Have you already started planning any future show for 2018, perhaps in Italy as well?

We will be back on the 70.000 Tons Of Metal cruise in Feb. 2018, then we will do the yearly fantastic Rock Meets Classic tour in April. We've already confirmed 8 open air festivals for the summer and plan to tour the world in september with the new album already released and it would be a please to play shows in Italy again, even more as we have a drummer from Italy!
