Non temete, l'Aquila gode di ottima salute (Primal Fear)

Vent'anni e non sentirli: i Primal Fear, con la fresca uscita di "Apocalypse", confermano di essere una delle migliori espressioni dell'heavy metal europeo nonostante la lunga carriera e i numerosi album pubblicati. La band tedesca ci parla del nuovo disco, dell'imminente tour mondiale, del concerto di Milano il prossimo 3 ottobre e rassicura tutti: l'aquila non cesserà il proprio maestoso volo ancora per molto tempo...

Hi guys and welcome back to SpazioRock. So, you're out now with "Apocalypse". It seems to be a new chapter in classic heavy metal, with the ideal title for a final episode ... and your iconic eagle is burning, should we be worried?

Don't be worried, we're in a good mood and have a entire world tour lined up for 2018/2019 with approximately 100 shows. The eagle will return in a different look, stronger than ever, mean and majestic.

Talking about the Beginning and the End ... what is the album you reckon should open the all times chronology of heavy metal? Why and when did you first listen to it?

The first album of Black Sabbath: it was groundbreaking, innovative, mysterious and powerful ... when I've started to listen to music and metal, end of the seventies.

And what are the elements that would make the definitive one? Do Primal Fear have the right cards to compose it?

It would be megalomania if I thought we can come up with that album after 40 years of metal and every harmony change possible done. We can write an album to make our fans happy and we have fans all over the world and can tour in the strangest countries, it's our first target to deliver the goods for our fans and not thinking we're the greatest metal band on earth. We love our job and give our best.

Since we have been discussing classics ... Many people continue to compare Primal Fear to Judas Priest. Are you tired of this comparison? Or do you still take it as a compliment?

We don't care anymore since years. Ralf will not change his voice anyway and we will write and records the music we love. We're very thankful that we can work in a job that's our passion and lifestyle. If it sounds like Judas Priest for some people, ok, they should listen more careful, but it's anyway much better than any shitty comparison.

Which one, among the following new songs does represent what you have been experiencing in the last months best? "Hounds of Justice", "King of Madness" or "The Ritual"? Why?

"The Ritual", because it combines the roots of the band with the progress all over the years.

Over the last couple of albums, the band has really expanded in the songwriting department. You wrote 10 minute long epic tracks as "We Walk Without Fear" and "Where Angels Die": now it's the turn of "Eye Of The Storm". What is the most epic thing you would suggest your fans doing while listening to it?

Close their eyes and listen carefully to every single note, it's worth it. For us it's always a real challenge to write songs in this kind of direction and still keep it interesting, Tempo changes, harmony changes, atmosphere changes from silence to brutal. We need this music extravaganza on an album as a challenge.

It's been 20 years since the first Primal Fear self titled album was released and 29 since Wacken Open Air first edition. What can you tell us about your personal experience with this great festival, as a musician and as a metalhead?

We have a great connection to the festival and to the responsible persons. Lot of respect and always a wonderful time to play the festival and be part of this impressive festival.

On the 3rd of October, you will be back in Italy for your show in Milan. What do you remember of your very first live in our country?

I think it was a festival in 1998 in Turin, Monsters Of Rock. It was one of our first shows and it was a really cool experience to play with Deep Purple and Dream Theatre as a new band.

Il vostro nuovo album, "Apocalypse", uscito il 10 agosto, costituisce un ulteriore capitolo di classico heavy metal; il titolo sembra essere ideale per un episodio finale, mentre l'iconica aquila simbolo dei Primal Fear sta bruciando ... Dovremmo essere preoccupati?

Non preoccuparti, siamo di buon umore e saremo impegnati in un tour mondiale per il 2018/2019 con circa 100 spettacoli. L'aquila tornerà in un aspetto diverso, più forte che mai, fantastica e maestosa.

Parlando di Inizio e di Fine... qual è l'album che dal punto di vista cronologico può essere considerato il disco che ha aperto le porte dell'heavy metal? Perché e quando lo hai ascoltato per la prima volta?

Il primo album dei Black Sabbath ("Black Sabbath", ndr.): è stato rivoluzionario, innovativo, misterioso e potente. L'ho ascoltato quando iniziai a interessarmi alla musica e al metal, alla fine degli anni settanta.

E quali sono gli elementi necessari per comporre l'album metal definitivo? I Primal Fear hanno le carte giuste per realizzarlo?

Sarebbe da megalomani pensare di comporre quell'album dopo quarant'anni di metal, con tutti i cambiamenti possibili di armonia che sono stati fatti. Certo, possiamo scrivere un disco per rendere felici i nostri fan, che sono davvero tanti a livello mondiale, e girare in tour nei paesi più strani: il primo obiettivo è quello di realizzare buoni prodotti e non pensare di essere la più grande metal band del mondo. Amiamo il nostro lavoro e cerchiamo sempre di dare il massimo.

Visto che abbiamo discusso di classici... Molte persone continuano a paragonare i Primal Fear ai Judas Priest. Siete stanchi di questo confronto? O lo prendi ancora come un complimento?

Non ci importa più da anni ormai. Ralf non cambierà in ogni caso la sua voce e in futuro scriveremo e registreremo sempre la musica che amiamo. Siamo molto grati di poter lavorare in un ambito professionale che rappresenta la nostra passione e il nostro stile di vita. Se per alcune persone qualcosa suona come i Judas Priest, ebbene, dovrebbero ascoltare con più attenzione, ma è comunque molto meglio di qualsiasi altro confronto di merda.

Quale delle nuove canzoni rappresenta al meglio ciò che hai vissuto negli ultimi mesi? "Hounds of Justice", "King of Madness" o "The Ritual"? E perché?

"The Ritual", perché unisce le radici della band con i progressi fatti nel corso degli anni.

Negli ultimi due album, la band si è davvero espansa in sede di songwriting. Avete scritto brani di dieci minuti come "We Walk Without Fear" e "Where Angels Die": ora è il turno di "Eye Of The Storm". Qual è l'azione più epica che consiglieresti ai vostri fan di compiere mentre la ascoltano?

Che chiudano gli occhi e ascoltino attentamente ogni singola nota, ne vale la pena. Per noi è sempre una vera sfida scrivere canzoni di questo genere e mantenerle comunque interessanti. I cambiamenti di tempo, quelli di armonia, l'atmosfera che muta continuamente: si passa dal silenzio a un clima brutale. Abbiamo bisogno di questa stravaganza musicale su un album: ripeto, è come una sfida per noi.

Sono trascorsi vent'anni dalla pubblicazione del primo album omonimo "Primal Fear" e ventinove dalla prima edizione del Wacken Open Air. Cosa puoi dirci della tua esperienza personale con questo grande festival, sia come musicista che come metallaro?

Abbiamo un ottimo legame con il festival e con gli organizzatori. Ho grande rispetto per l'evento, è sempre un momento meraviglioso quando suoniamo lì ed è bellissimo far parte di questa kermesse impressionante.

Il 3 ottobre tornerete in Italia per il concerto di Milano. Cosa ricordi del vostro primissimo live nel nostro paese?

Penso sia stato in un festival nel 1998 a Torino, il Monsters Of Rock. Si trattava di uno dei nostri primi concerti e fu un'esperienza davvero fantastica suonare, come nuova band, con Deep Purple e Dream Theater.

Sono molto felice di poter suonare a Milano il 3 ottobre e di tornare in Italia con il nostro nuovo album "Apocalypse". I Primal Fear festeggiano vent'anni di attività e abbiamo preparato una setlist speciale per il tour che, si spera, soddisferà tutti i nostri fedeli fan con molte sorprese! Grazie.
