In occasione del loro approdo nel nostro Paese il prossimo 26 giugno a Piacenza nell’ambito del festival “Dal Mississippi al Po”, abbiamo avuto modo di scambiare quattro chiacchiere con il duo blues/soul di Nashville The War And Treaty. Tanya e Michael Trotter, una coppia nel lavoro e nella vita, ci illustrano la filosofia dietro il loro fare musica, improntata sull’amore e la libertà, con un approccio onesto che parla dritto all’animo.

Ciao Tanya, ciao Michael! Benvenuti su SpazioRock.it. Come state? Il vostro tour mondiale è appena iniziato. Come sta andando fino ad ora?

Tanya: È così bello cantare e ballare. Ci piace!

Siete un duo sposato di Nashville che crea suoni unici, mescolando blues, soul e gospel. Ma voglio che vi presentiate meglio, a chi ancora non vi conosce: come descrivereste il vostro percorso musicale?

Michael: È una domanda complessa, ma farò del mio meglio per rispondere. Tanya ed io siamo la coppia che irrita tutti dopo un po’ con la nostra sdolcinatezza dentro o fuori dal palco. Vedendoci ti chiedi se è reale e noi diciamo di sì: reale come le nostre discussioni a casa (ride, NdR) Non siamo perfetti ma siamo onesti. Otterrai quell’onestà anche ai nostri spettacoli.

Finora avete pubblicato tre album, l’ultimo si chiama “Hearts Town” (2020), che è il soprannome che i vostri fan devoti vi hanno dato. Descrive una comunità in cui tutti possono vivere come essere umani unici e amare liberamente: è quello che fa la musica, costruendo ponti, non barriere. Ed è anche il messaggio che volete diffondere. Come fate a continuare a mandare messaggi di speranza quando a volte il mondo sembra spegnere alcune delle sue luci?

Tanya: Crediamo nell’amore. Abbiamo fiducia nell’amore. Siamo la luce che non si può spegnere. Non mi interessa quello che dicono gli altri: l’amore vincerà! La nostra speranza è costruita su niente di meno.

La vostra musica viene direttamente dalla vostra anima, è profondamente emotiva. Parlando sia di musica che di testi, potete dirci qualcosa sul processo di scrittura delle canzoni? Seguite uno schema costante ma sincero, oppure il flusso?

Michael: Ho creato un sistema per me stesso. Le chiamo le 3 L del songwriting: Life, Love, Law (Vita, Amore, Legge). Ogni canzone scritta può rientrare in una di queste categorie. Quindi, a seconda di come mi sento momento per momento, la L potrebbe cambiare.

Ho detto prima che siete sposati. L’alchimia è innegabile, basta solo vedere una vostra esibizione. Ad entrambi: com’è lavorare quotidianamente con il proprio partner? Se/Quando c’è una divergenza su qualcosa come risolvete?

Tanya: Michael è l’amore della mia vita, tuttavia mi dà sui nervi davvero tanto (ride, NdR)  Se il mio caro si arrabbia con qualcuno, in qualche modo ha trovato un modo per appuntarselo con orgoglio sul petto, e ancora non riesco a staccarmi dalla presa del suo amore. Questo è il vero amore!
Michael: Mi dà fastidio tutto ciò che ha appena detto (ride, NdR) Non sono sempre proprio d’accordo con Tanya, sono piuttosto rude e Tanya è tutto ciò che non ho mai pensato di essere abbastanza degno di ricevere. È un miracolo che mi abbia permesso di legare il mio cognome al suo per così tanto tempo.

Ci sono due delle vostre canzoni che mi hanno particolarmente colpito: “Jubilee” che è stata scritta quando Michael aveva a che fare con il disturbo da stress post-traumatico dopo il servizio militare in Iraq, e “Beautiful” che ripercorre gli ultimi giorni della madre di Tanya. Vorrei chiedere a entrambi: riuscite a nominare una canzone che vi mettere in subbuglio lo stomaco, o in cui vi riflettete?

Tanya: “Take Me In”. La mia convinzione nella vita è che ogni cosa che respira vuole essere accettata. Che ogni uomo, donna, ragazzo, ragazza, cane, gatto, pianta, fiore vuole essere amato e curato. È una responsabilità che non possiamo ignorare e con questa canzone riconosciamo pienamente questo sentimento.
Michael: Facendo un po’ eco a Tanya qui direi “We Are One”. È così inverosimile credere che siamo tutti unicamente diversi ma anormalmente uguali? Penso di no. Dobbiamo cedere a questa convinzione che apparteniamo gli uni agli altri. La famiglia non può più essere limitata alle linee di sangue, ecc. Dobbiamo aumentare la nostra umanità e sentirci responsabili gli uni degli altri ora. “We Are One” è la sigla del grido di battaglia di questa idea.

In questi anni avete ricevuto molti importanti riconoscimenti, non ultimo la nomination come “Duo/Gruppo dell’anno 2022” all’”Americana Music Association”. Ce n’è uno che vi ha inaspettatamente sbalordito quando avete appreso la notizia?

Tanya: La nomination di quest’anno ci ha davvero sbalordito

Finalmente suonerete per la prima volta in Italia, il 26 giugno. Quali sono le vostre aspettative al riguardo?

Michael: Siamo nervosi come un gatto bloccato in una cuccia. Speriamo che l’Italia ci piacerà, no, speriamo che l’Italia ci amerà e che torneremo ancora e ancora.

Stiamo volgendo alla fine dell’intervista. Volete lasciare un messaggio ai vostri fan e ai nostri lettori?

Tanya: Venite a trovarci. Venite a conoscerci. Divertiamoci.

Hi Tanya, hi Michael! Welcome to SpazioRock.it. How are you? 

Your worldwide tour has just began. How is it going so far?

Tanya: It feels so good to sing and dance. We love it!

You’re a married duo from Nashville who creates unique sounds, mixing blues, soul and gospel. But I want to let you introduce yourselves better, to those who don’t know you yet: how would you describe your musical journey?

Michael: We’ll that is a complex question but I’ll try my best to answer it. Tanya and I are the couple who irritates everyone after while with our mushiness on or off stage. Seeing us you ask yourself if it’s real and we say yes as real as our arguments at home (laughs) We are not perfect but we are honest. You’ll get that honesty at our shows too.

You’ve released three albums so far, the last one is called “Hearts Town” (2020), which is the nickname your devoted fanbase gave to you. It describes a community where everyone can live as a unique human being and love freely: that’s what music does, by building up bridges, not barriers. And that’s the message that you want to spread, too. How do you keep sending vibes of hope when sometimes the world seems to turn off some of its lights?

Tanya: We believe in love. We have faith in love. We are the light that can’t be turned off. I don’t care what anyone says: love will win! Our hope is built on nothing less. 

Your music comes directly from your soul, it’s deeply emotional.

Talking about both music and lyrics, can you tell us something about the songwriting process? Do you follow a steady but heartfelt pattern, or you go with the flow?

Michael: I’ve created a system for myself. I call it the 3 Ls of songwriting. Life, Love, and Law. Every song ever written can fall under one of these categories. So depending on how I feel moment by moment the L may change. 

I mentioned before that you’re married to each other. The chemistry is undeniable, it’s sufficient just to see one of your performance.

To both of you: how is it working daily with your partner? If/when there’s a divergence about something how do you dissolve that?

Tanya: Michael is the love of my life, however he gets on my nerves so much (laughs) All if my pet peeves about a human being he has somehow found a way to wear them proudly on his chest, and still I find myself not being able to pry away from the grasp of his love. That is true love!
Michael: I resent everything she just said (laughs) Not really I actually agree with Tanya, I am so rough around the edges and Tanya is everything I never thought I was worthy enough to receive. It is a miracle she’s allowed me to fasten my last name to hers for this long.

There are two of your songs that particularly hit me: “Jubilee” that was written when Michael was dealing with PTSD after the military service in Iraq, and “Beautiful” which looks back on the final days of Tanya’s mother. I’d like to ask to both of you: could you name one song that turns your guts upside down, or which you reflect into?

Tanya: “Take Me In”. It’s my belief in life that every breathing thing wants to be accepted. That every man woman boy girl dog cat plant flower wants to be loved and cared for. It’s a responsibility that we can’t ignore and with this song we acknowledge this sentiment fully.
Michael: Echoing Tanya a bit here I’d say “We Are One”. Is it so far fetched to believe that we are all uniquely different but abnormally the same? I think not. We need to give in to this belief that we belong to one another. Family can no longer be limited to bloodlines etc. We’ve got to raise our humanity and feel responsible for one another now. “We Are One” is the theme song of the battle cry to this idea.

During these years you’ve received many important recognitions, last but not the least the “2022 Duo/Group of The Year” nomination to the “Americana Music Association”. Is there one of them which unexpectedly blew out your mind when you heard the news?

Tanya: This year’s nomination truly blew our minds.

You’re finally getting to play in Italy for the first time, on June 26th. Which are your expectations about that?

Michael: We are nervous as a cat stuck in a dog house. We hope Italy will like us, no we hope Italy will love us and we come back over and over again.
