È passato solo un anno dalla sua prima scoppiettante data in Italia da headliner, ma evidentemente non è bastata. Morgan Parriott, in arte Call Me Karizma, tornerà infatti al Legend Club di Milano il 13 marzo (biglietti qui), per travolgerci con il suo mix letale di generi. Per l’occasione abbiamo raccolto le sue aspettative su questo ritorno, oltre a parlare del suo ultimo album “Francis” e di cosa possiamo aspettarci da lui in futuro.

Ciao Morgan, bentornato su Spaziorock! Come va?

Alla grande! Sono stato molto impegnato fra il nuovo album, la preparazione del tour e l’arrivo di mia figlia a maggio!

Un anno fa ci avevi detto che eri molto soddisfatto di come fosse stato accolto il tuo ultimo album “Francis”, ma anche che, come artista, si aspira sempre a volere di più. Ora, a distanza di un anno, quanto sei soddisfatto di “Francis” e di tutto quello che è successo in questi ultimi mesi?

Come la maggior parte degli album, il lavoro non viene subito apprezzato nel suo complesso. Ci vuole del tempo per far sì che gli ascoltatori trovino le proprie perle nascoste preferite e ascoltino l’intero album da cima a fondo. Penso che “Francis” verrà ricordato come uno dei miei dischi più personali e allo stesso tempo diventerà lentamente uno dei miei album più popolari.

Recentemente hai pubblicato “War” con Phix. Cosa puoi dirci di questa canzone e di questa collaborazione? Come è nata l’idea?

Ho avuto la mia prima sessione in assoluto con due produttori, Curt Martin e Matty Beats. Mi hanno mandato il beat di “War” e l’ho scritta mentre andavo a questa sessione. Mi è venuta in circa 15 minuti e appena sono arrivato in studio l’ho registrata e abbiamo utilizzato questi demo vocali. Dato che questi produttori, lavoravano anche con Phix, gli abbiamo mandato la canzone per aggiungere la sua strofa e abbiamo completato il singolo. Ora ha raggiunto più di 1 milione di stream in meno di 4 settimane, tra le mie canzoni è stata la prima a raggiungere questo risultato in così poco tempo!

Se dovessi scegliere un altro artista con cui collaborare, chi sarebbe e perché?

Mi piacerebbe lavorare con Yungblud, Frank Ocean, Eminem, Poppy, Bring Me The Horizon… e, a dire il vero, molti altri. Penso che ognuno di questi artisti abbia avuto il proprio personale percorso musicale che nessun altro, a parte loro, è riuscito ancora a padroneggiare appieno. Sono anche autentici e apprezzano veramente l’arte della musica.

Un anno dopo il tuo ultimo concerto in Italia, tornerai a Milano il 13 marzo. Qual è il ricordo più bello di quello show e cosa possiamo aspettarci da questo? Adesso sappiamo che le tue performance sono pazzesche, quindi ci dovrai sorprendere di nuovo in qualche modo…

Tecnicamente è stato lo spettacolo con la location più ristretta del tour dell’anno scorso, ma onestamente uno dei migliori. L’energia era impareggiabile e, per quanto ridotto fosse il pubblico, sembrava che tutti conoscessero ogni canzone a memoria. Io e la mia band abbiamo lavorato molto duramente su questa nuova scaletta e sullo spettacolo, siamo davvero entusiasti di farvi vedere come torneremo quest’anno!

Quando hai iniziato a viaggiare in vari Paesi, hai notato qualche differenza nell’atmosfera o nell’approccio del pubblico alla tua musica?

Ho notato che l’Europa, in particolare l’Europa dell’Est, ha un particolare attaccamento per la mia musica e gli spettacoli sono pazzeschi. Meno parlano inglese, più conoscono le mie canzoni parola per parola e penso che questa sia la bellezza della mia musica (e della musica in generale). La musica abbatte tutte le barriere demografiche, linguistiche, politiche…

La tua musica è un mix letale di tanti generi diversi. Hai in mente qualcosa che non hai ancora provato e vorresti sperimentare?

In realtà ho pensato di provare la musica country. Sono molto in sintonia con i testi e il senso di unione della musica country, fin da quando sono cresciuto (e vivo ancora) in una piccola città di poche migliaia di persone nel Midwest americano. Sarebbe una sfida, ma penso che potrebbe rivelarsi grandioso.

Si può trasmettere molto tramite la musica. Quale messaggio vorresti far passare alle persone attraverso la tua musica?

Ogni canzone che creo è specifica e significa qualcosa di diverso, ma direi che il messaggio che voglio esprimere è quello di essere fedeli a se stessi. Non devi essere il migliore in qualcosa, ma puoi tenere sotto controllo quanto duramente lavori e quanto sei onesto con te stesso. Penso che la crudezza/schiettezza della mia musica sia la testimonianza di questo modo di pensare.

Hai suonato diverse volte con Yungblud. Cosa ne pensi di questa esperienza? Cosa potresti imparare da lui?

È una vera rockstar. Che tu lo ami o lo odi, è davvero un artista che ha passione per la sua musica e i suoi fan. Fa la musica che gli piace ed esprime se stesso attraverso di essa. Questo è qualcosa che tutti gli artisti possono e dovrebbero emulare.

Hai qualche progetto per il futuro? Stai scrivendo qualcosa di nuovo?

Dunque, a maggio avrò la mia prima bambina. Quindi, tra il cambio dei pannolini e la fine del mio prossimo album, manterrò un profilo basso. Penso che potrei sparire dai social per un po’ e tornare con il miglior album del 2024. Vedremo!

Hello Morgan, welcome back to Spaziorock! How are you doing?

I’m great! Been busy working on my album, preparing for tour and getting ready for my daughter to come in May!

A year ago you told us that you were very satisfied with how your last album “Francis” had been received, but that as an artist you always want more. Now, after a year, how satisfied are you with “Francis” and everything that has happened in recent months?

Like most albums, it doesn’t get fully appreciated as a body of work instantly. It takes time for listeners to find their favorite hidden gems and to hear the whole album from front to back. I think Francis will go down as one of my more personal records and it slowly becomes one of my most popular albums.

You recently released “War” featuring Phix. What can you tell us about this song and this collaboration? How did the idea come out?

I had my first session ever with 2 producers named Curt Martin and Matty Beats. They sent me the beat for “War” and I wrote it while walking to the session. It came to me in like 15 minutes and as soon as I got to the studio I recorded it and we used those original demo vocals. They also work with Phix, so we sent it to him for his verse, and we finished the song. Now it has over 1 million streams in less than 4 weeks, which is faster than any song of mine to do that!

If you had to choose another artist to collaborate with, who would it be and why?

I’d love to work with Yungblud, Frank Ocean, Eminem, Poppy, Bring Me The Horizon.. and honest so many more. I think they all have their own lane of music that no one else has quite mastered yet, besides them. They also are genuine and truly appreciate the art of music.

One year after your last show in Italy, you’re coming back to Milan on 13th March. What’s the best memory about the 2023 show and what can we expect from this one? Now we know that your performances are crazy, so you will have to surprise us again somehow…

It was technically the smallest show of tour last year, but honestly one of the best. The energy was unmatched, and for how small the crowd was, they seemed to know every song by heart. Me and my band have worked super hard on this new setlist and show and we’re super excited for you to see what we are back with this year!

As you started traveling through various countries, have you noticed any difference in the atmosphere or in the approach of the audience to your music?

I’ve noticed that Europe, particularly Eastern Europe goes incredible hardcore for my music, and the shows are insane. The less English they speak, the more they know my songs word for word, and I think that is the beauty of my music, and music in general. Music breaks down all barriers of demographic, language, politics, etc. 

Your music is a lethal mix of many different genres. Do you have something in mind that you haven’t tried yet and would like to experiment?

I actually have thought about trying country music. I resonate a lot with the lyrics and camaraderie of country music, since I grew up (and still live) in a tiny town of few thousand people in the Midwest of America. It would be a challenge, but I think it could turn out great.

Music is about sending a message. What message would you like to send to people through your music?

Each song I make is specific and means something different, but I would say being true to yourself is the message my music conveys. You don’t have to be the greatest at something, but you can control how hard you work and how honest you are with yourself. I think the rawness in my music is my testament to that way of thinking. 

You played several times with Yungblud. What do you think about this experience? What could you learn from him?

He is a genuine rockstar. Whether you love him or hate him, he truly is a rockstar who has passion for his music and his fans. He makes the music he likes and he expresses himself through it. That’s something all artists can and should emulate.

Do you have any plans for the future? Are you writing something new?

Well, in May I am having my first child. So between changing diapers and finishing my next album, I’ll be laying low. I think I might disappear from social media for a bit and come back with the best album of 2024. We will see!
