Dopo tre ottimi album in studio, i Seven Spires hanno pubblicato, sulla nostrana Frontiers Records, “Live At ProgPower USA XXI”, registrato durante il festival di Atlanta a giugno 2022. Ne abbiamo parlato con la cantante Adrienne Cowan.

Ciao Adrienne e benvenuta su SpazioRock. Come stai? Come sta procedendo il tour con gli Eluveitie?

Ciao Paolo, grazie mille! Bene e finora il tour è stato fantastico. Siamo sempre grati di essere in tour, non solo con grandi musicisti, ma anche con belle persone.

Dopo la pubblicazione di tre ottimi album in studio siete giunti al vostro primo live album. Era un’idea che avevate in mente da tempo o è nata all’improvviso?

È nata all’improvviso! Il giorno della nostra esibizione al ProgPower, ci hanno fatto sapere che potevamo avere le registrazioni dello show e abbiamo pensato: “Beh, se va bene, sarebbe un peccato non pubblicarlo”. È andata bene. Normalmente questo tipo di album dal vivo comporta potenzialmente giorni di preparazione, controllo dei livelli e così via, ma abbiamo avuto 20 minuti durante il soundcheck per preparare tutto al meglio.

Cosa si prova a registrare un live album? Si sentono maggiori pressioni rispetto a un normale concerto?

Non credo che sia molto diverso da un normale concerto. Cerchiamo sempre di dare il meglio di noi stessi a ogni concerto, e poi la gente riprende sempre le cose con il cellulare, quindi in un modo o nell’altro finiscono per essere registrate.

Da quello che hai fatto intuire dai social, Roy Khan è uno dei tuoi cantanti preferiti. Cosa hai provato a condividere il palco con lui in “This God Is Dead”? C’è qualche altro cantante con cui vorresti duettare nel prossimo album?

Hai ragione . È stato piuttosto intenso dal punto di vista emotivo – tra il fatto che lui è uno dei miei eroi, la canzone in sé è un grande viaggio emotivo e il mio amore per quel festival, ero piuttosto nervosa per tutto il giorno. Abbiamo provato solo brevemente nella hall dell’hotel la mattina dello spettacolo, era anche la prima volta che ci incontravamo. Sul palco e dopo lo spettacolo, ero felicissima e un po’ incredula che fosse successo davvero. E mi sono sentita sollevata dal fatto che fosse così calmo, gentile e rispettoso nei confronti di tutti noi. Per quanto riguarda il prossimo album, sto sempre sognando idee per i duetti, ma non credo sia il momento giusto per fare spoiler.

Questi ultimi mesi penso siano davvero importanti per la vostra giovane carriera, il punto più alto raggiunto da voi finora. Non solo per la pubblicazione di “Live At Progpower Usa XXI” ma soprattutto per il vostro primo tour europeo insieme ai Twilight Force e per quello americano con gli Eluveitie. Sei d’accordo con me?

Assolutamente! Nessuno sa con certezza cosa ci riservi il futuro, ma credo che tutti noi abbiamo una buona sensazione.

Parlando del tour europeo, quali sensazioni vi ha dato il pubblico europeo? C’è qualche ricordo particolare che vorresti raccontarci?

Oh, cavolo, abbiamo adorato il tour europeo. Essendo il nostro primo tour completo, c’erano persone che avevano aspettato anni, fin dal nostro primo album, per vederci. Quindi ogni serata è stata davvero speciale da quel punto di vista. Non vedo l’ora di tornarci e spero che non passi tanto tempo. Ci sono molti bei ricordi tra cui scegliere, ma uno dei miei momenti più belli è stato quando Alessandro Conti dei Twilight Force si è unito a noi sul palco per “Succumb” durante l’ultimo concerto. Non è un segreto che sia uno dei miei vocalist preferiti e, nonostante abbiamo viaggiato insieme per un mese, mi sono sentita ancora un po’ come una fan impazzita quando l’ho sentito cantare la nostra canzone.

Io ero presente alla data italiana e vi devo fare i complimenti. Mi avete veramente stupito, tecnicamente impeccabili. A tal proposito Adrienne, passi da cantare note altissime a sfogare la tua rabbia nei growl in pochissimi secondi e ciò lo fai ai limiti della perfezione, è incredibile. Come fai a mantenere sempre questo livello dopo tutti questi spettacoli?

Grazie mille! Beh, mi sono esercitata molto per molti anni, e ho anche avuto una discreta esperienza di tournée per capire come sopravvivere. Per lo più si tratta di rimanere idratati e di stare attenti a come spendo la mia voce prima dello spettacolo. Tutto ciò che viene dopo il periodo di recupero post-spettacolo è lecito, purché riesca a dormire a sufficienza.

State già lavorando al vostro quarto album in studio o vi state godendo il tour? Puoi rivelarci qualcosa?

Oh, entrambi. Abbiamo praticamente tutte le demo fatte e per ora ci stanno solo ribollendo nel cervello, mentre ci godiamo il tour. Finora è quello che sappiamo fare meglio: creare qualcosa (si spera) di bello dalla nostra oscurità. Ma io e Jack siamo anche d’accordo sul fatto che le nuove canzoni siano in un certo senso un po’ “brutte”, argomenti difficili di cui le persone non amano parlare così tanto, anche se li sentono nel profondo. Più di questo sarebbero spoiler.

Grazie mille per questa intervista! Vuoi lasciare un messaggio ai vostri fan italiani? Saranno sicuramente ansiosi di rivedervi dal vivo, magari come headliner.

Grazie mille a tutti per averci supportato! Non vediamo l’ora di tornare a suonare per voi nel vostro bellissimo paese. E spero che riusciremo anche a mangiare qualcosa di delizioso mentre siamo lì.

Hi, welcome to SpazioRock. How are you? How is the tour with Eluveitie going?

Hi Paolo, thank you so much! We are doing well, and the tour has been fantastic so far. We are always thankful to go out with not only great musicians, but also nice people.

After three great studio albums, you are going to release your first live album, “Live At ProgPower USA XXI”. Was it an idea you had in mind for some time or was it born suddenly?

It was born very suddenly! The day of our performance at ProgPower, they let us know we could have the recordings from the show, and we thought, “Well, if it goes well, it’d be a shame to not release it.” It went well. Normally these sort of live albums involve potentially days of setting up, checking levels, etc, but we had 20 minutes during our soundcheck to get everything as ready as possible. 

What does it feel like to record a live album? Do you feel more pressure than a normal concert?

I don’t think it’s that different from a normal concert. We always try to give our absolute best at every show, and besides, people always film stuff on their phones so it ends up recorded one way or another. 

Adrienne, from what you’ve suggested on social media, Roy Khan is one of your favorite singers. How did you feel sharing the stage with him in “This God Is Dead”? Is there any other singer you would like to play a duet with in the next album?

You are correct. It was quite emotionally intense – between him being one of my heroes, the song itself being a big emotional trip, and my love for that festival, I was actually pretty nervous that whole day. We only rehearsed briefly in the hotel lobby the morning of the show, which was also our first time meeting. On the stage and after the show, I was super happy and a bit in disbelief that it actually happened. And, I felt relieved that he was so calm and kind and respectful towards all of us.  About the next album, I’m always dreaming up duet ideas, but I don’t think it’s the right time for any spoilers.

I think these months are really important for your young career, the greatest point reached by you so far. Not only for the release of “Live At ProgPower Usa XXI” but especially for your first European tour together with Twilight Force and for the American tour with Eluveitie. Do you agree with me? 

Absolutely! Nobody knows for sure what the future holds, but I think we all have a good feeling.

Talking about the European tour, what feelings did the European audience give you? Is there any special memory you would like to tell us about?

Oh man, we loved the European tour. Since it was our first full-length tour over there, there were people who had waited years, since our first album even, to see us. So every night was really special in that regard. I really can’t wait for us to go back, and I hope it won’t take as long to get back over there next time. There are many beautiful memories to choose from, but one of my personal highlights was when Alessandro Conti from Twilight Force joined us onstage for “Succumb” at the last show. It’s no secret that he is one of my favourite vocalists, and despite traveling together for a month, I still felt a bit like a giddy fangirl when I heard him singing our song. 

I was at the Italian gig and I have to congratulate you. You really amazed me, you were technically flawless. By the way Adrienne, in a few seconds you go from singing high notes to venting your anger with harsh vocals and you do it perfectly, it’s incredible. How can you always keep this level after all these shows?

Thank you very much. Well, I practiced a lot for many years, and also had a fair bit of tour experience to figure out how to survive on the road. It mostly involves staying hydrated and being mindful about how I spend my voice before showtime. Anything after the post-show recovery period is fair game as long as I get enough sleep.

Are you already working on your fourth studio album or are you enjoying the tour? Can you reveal something to us?

Oh, both really. We have basically all of the demos done and they’re just stewing in our brains for now, while we enjoy the tour. So far it’s what we do best: making something (hopefully) beautiful out of our darkness. But Jack and I also agree that the new songs are in a way a bit “ugly” – difficult topics that people don’t like to talk about so much, even if they feel it deep down. More than that would be spoiler.
