Ciao Jens e bentornato sulle pagine di SpazioRock! L'ultima volta che abbiamo avuto modo di chiacchierare è stato nel backstage del Wacken Open Air nel 2011. Se tu potessi tornare a quel momento, con quale versione della band preferiresti suonare, gli Edguy attuali o quelli di sei anni fa? E perché?

Mi piacciono entrambe le versioni, ed entrambe hanno il diritto di esistere. Ovviamente nel frattempo siamo cresciuti un po'. Allora eravamo più giovani ma non sono il tipo di persona che cerca di far tornare indietro il tempo. Tutto ciò che è accaduto è successo per un motivo e tutto questo ci ha portato dove ci troviamo ora, e devo dire che sono alquanto felice. Due o tre cose ci devono essere andate per il verso giusto! Sostanzialmente siamo ancora le stesse persone che eravamo sei anni fa. Certo, chiunque cresce, come persona, come essere umano; noi stessi siamo maturati, ora ognuno ha una famiglia e credo che questi siano i cambiamenti più evidenti nella vita di tutti noi. A parte questo non molto è cambiato nella band.

Torniamo al presente. Stiamo celebrando i vostri venticinque anni di carriera come band. Quali erano le tue speranze personali quando hai iniziato a suonare con gli Edguy? Si sono avverate?

Dunque, quando abbiamo iniziato non avevamo alcuna aspettativa. Onestamente, abbiamo messo insieme la band quando avevamo quattordici anni e tutto ciò a cui aspiravamo era riuscire a suonare qualche canzone senza commettere troppi errori. Quindi, se qualcuno mi avesse detto il successo che avremmo ottenuto come band nel corso di venticinque anni, non gli avrei affatto creduto. Non cambierei alcuna decisione di quelle che abbiamo preso. Tutto ciò che abbiamo fatto è stato appagante ed è un vero privilegio fare parte di questa band ed essere in grado di suonare di fronte a migliaia di persone in tutto il mondo e sono veramente grato per questo.

Il quattrodici di luglio celebrerete questo grande traguardo con la pubblicazione di "Monuments". La cover art ha tanti rimandi al passato. Chi ha avuto l'idea e come è stata sviluppata? Hai avuto modo di partecipare a questo processo di creazione?

L'idea è venuta da Toby (Sammet, ndr.) insieme al tizio che di solito realizza le immagini delle nostre copertine. Successivamente ha cercato di realizzarla visivamente ed è veramente interessante vedere come l'immagine di copertina prende vita, sviluppandosi da un primo bozzetto che ancora non ti permette di capire come sarà una volta finita e devo dire che è venuta fuori una immagine veramente accattivante.

Riguardo al titolo, possiamo considerare questi brani una sorta di monumento alla vostra carriera? È una scelta estremamente seria, se pensiamo che ad averla fatta è la band che ha scritto "Lavatory Love Machine"...

Vero! (Ride, ndr.) Almeno una volta nella vita abbiamo scelto un titolo serio. Un titolo che dà una giusta idea della nostra musica, di tutti gli album che abbiamo pubblicato. Abbiamo pensato fin da subito ad una sola parola, Monuments.

"Monuments" può essere considerato una sorta di Greatest Hits, quindi perché avete deciso di inserire cinque inediti? Sono quasi mezzo album...

È vero anche questo, ma è successo tutto per puro caso. Onestamente, quando abbiamo iniziato a parlare tra noi di questa compilation avevamo in mente di aggiungere una o due canzoni nuove, ma poi ci siamo trovati con tutte queste canzoni quasi finite... Personalmente credo che cinque canzoni nuove siano meglio di due!

Vuoi parlarci di qualcuna di queste nuove canzoni?

Ma certo, sono tutte molto accattivanti e mi piace molto soprattutto "Wrestle With The Devil". Questa canzone per me suona veramente fresca, in un certo senso è un tipo di canzone che non avevamo ancora proposto.

A nome dei vostri fan di vecchia data vorrei chiederti perché avete deciso di pubblicare solo ora "Reborn In The Waste", proveniente dalla sessione di registrazione di "Savage Poetry"? Forse il genere umano nel 1995 non era ancora pronto per questa canzone?

In tutta onestà questa compilation è l'unica possibilità che questa canzone abbia mai avuto di essere pubblicata. Non l'avremmo mai rilasciata come un normale B-Side. Vi deve essere stato di sicuro un qualche motivo per cui non l'abbiamo mai pubblicata prima. (Ride, ndr.)

Siamo più che mai curiosi di sapere quale sia stato questo motivo!

Non è nulla di più che una semplice curiosità (questa canzone, ndr.), qualcosa che può interessare solo ad un vero fan. Probabilmente le persone normali non l'ascolteranno neppure. Questa canzone è parte della nostra storia e non avevamo alcuna intenzione di tenerla in un cassetto. Per i fan sarà invece un qualcosa di curioso, mentre l'ascoltatore casuale la salterà! (Ride, ndr.) Nel corso degli anni avevamo perfino dimenticato che vi era ancora una traccia mai pubblicata proveniente dalle registrazioni di "Savage Poetry" ma naturalmente durante il lavoro preparatorio per l'uscita di "Monuments" abbiamo passato in rassegna tutto il materiale che avremmo potuto includere e questa canzone è saltata fuori. Può sembrare buffo, ma è quasi come se ci fosse un B-Side della compilation! (Ride, ndr.)

Non avete inserito nessun brano da "Kingdom Of Madness". Non avete buoni ricordi di quell'album?

Al contrario, sono molto orgoglioso di quell'album, ma abbiamo tante altre canzoni migliori! (Ride, ndr.) "Kingdom..." aveva tante idee interessanti, belle canzoni, come "Deadmaker" e "The Kingdom". Non è stata una decisione contro quell'album quanto un favorire altre canzoni che sono nettamente migliori.

Perché non ci racconti qualcosa riguardo alla realizzazione della tracklist?

Potrai ben capire che con dieci album a disposizione, è sempre difficile effettuare una selezione... sai bene di avere dei limiti, non puoi inserire tutto quello che vorresti. Vi sono alcune canzoni che avrebbero potuto fare parte di questa release ma abbiamo preferito inserire brani che non sono apparsi sugli album regolari. Per esempio "Spooks In The Attic" che io adoro. O "Judas In The Opera" con Michael Kiske. Questo è anche un modo per mostrare come eravamo e come siamo ora.

Un'altra scelta interessante è quella di aver incluso il concerto di San Paolo dal tour del 2004 come DVD. Cosa vi ha fatto sceglierlo rispetto ad altri concerti degli ultimi tredici anni?

Non ricordo esattamente, ma quando abbiamo registrato quel concerto avevamo programmato di pubblicarlo in DVD ma qualcosa era andato storto, c'era decisamente qualcosa che non funzionava, quindi abbiamo deciso di rimandare la pubblicazione fin quando non avessimo potuto pubblicare tutto quanto il materiale. Due o tre canzoni erano già state inserite nell'EP "Superheroes". È stato un ottimo concerto, divertente da guardare ed ha un'ottima scaletta. Un bel tuffo nel passato.

Avete preparato anche un libro da 160 pagine, pieno di foto d'epoca per la limited edition. Come è stato rivedervi in questi scatti dal passato? Immagino ve ne siano diversi estremamente divertenti...

Dipende dalla singola foto di cui stiamo parlando! (Ride, ndr.) Il processo di selezione ha riportato in mente diversi bei ricordi ma anche diversi ricordi non proprio piacevoli. Puoi vedere venticinque anni racchiusi insieme in 160 pagine. Devi sapere che quando prepariamo un disco, non lo facciamo solo per i fan, ma lo facciamo anche e soprattutto per noi stessi. È per questo che passiamo molto tempo a registrare o a scegliere le foto. È per cercare di creare qualcosa di bello da poter tenere tra le nostre mani ed essere orgogliosi di quello che abbiamo fatto. Nonché, in tutta onestà, un qualcosa che possiamo vendere alla gente perché realmente prezioso e ben fatto.

Ne hai incorniciata qualcuna di queste foto sui tuoi muri di casa?

Assolutamente sì, alcune sono presenti. In verità, ciò che fa bella mostra di sé sui miei muri sono per lo più i pass del backstage di alcune esibizioni speciali e cose di questo genere.

Fulda è una città di medie dimensioni (67.000 abitanti, ndr.). Quanto è cambiata la scena musicale negli ultimi venticinque anni, grazie anche alla presenza degli Edguy?

Non ti so dire. Di certo molte più persone conoscono la nostra città. In un'ottica economica, abbiamo avuto un piccolo ritorno, perché molte persone vengono a visitarla, prenotano alberghi e ristoranti, ma musicalmente non molto. Non penso che abbiamo avuto un grosso effetto sulla nostra città natale.

Passando a qualcosa di bizzarro: dando un'occhiata alla pagina di Wikipedia dedicata alle persone importanti di Fulda ci si accorge che in quella tedesca viene segnalato solo Tobias, mentre in quella in inglese c'è anche Dirk. Cosa ne pensi del fatto di essere il meno importante del trio di Fulda degli Edguy?

Credo che siamo decisamente meno importanti, a volte devi accettare la verità! (Ride, ndr.) Credo che qualcuno dovrebbe sistemare quelle pagine! Onestamente, io non saprei nemmeno metterci le mani...

Forse uno dei vostri fan, dopo aver letto questa intervista, le sistemerà per voi!

Se dovessi scegliere tre parole che danno una giusta rappresentazione di cosa sono stati gli ultimi venticinque anni per gli Edguy, cosa sceglieresti?

La prima sarebbe sicuramente divertimento...

Sì, me lo aspettavo...

Riconoscenza e ottimismo.

Siete soliti inserire brani di altri musicisti durante i vostri live show. È un qualcosa che i fan si aspettano o ha ancora una sua spontaneità?

È un qualcosa che facciamo per nostro divertimento, così come ho già avuto modo di dire riguardo ad altri aspetti. Principalmente lo facciamo per noi stessi, si tratta di musica che ci piacerebbe ascoltare e che abbiamo piacere di suonare.

Credi che questo sia il segreto della longevità della vostra carriera come band? Non vi sono molti gruppi che sono durati per più di venti anni...

In verità, credo che sia solo fortuna! (Ride, ndr.) No, va bene, in verità non vi è alcuna formula da seguire per rimanere insieme come band. Siamo cinque persone, ognuno con la propria indole e dobbiamo farle coesistere. Ovviamente, se hai qualcuno come Tobias Sammet che è il prototipo del frontman ed attira la maggior parte delle attenzioni, allora devi avere delle persone nella band che non abbiano problemi a restare in secondo piano, altrimenti vi saranno degli scontri di personalità e questo è il motivo per cui la maggior parte delle band si divide: non riescono a tenere sotto controllo l'ego dei singoli musicisti. Siamo una band ben assortita, siamo riusciti ad avere la stessa formazione per venti anni che è un qualcosa di cui sono molto orgoglioso ed è molto raro in questo tipo di lavoro.

Deve essere estremamente difficile riuscire a scegliere le singole canzoni per un concerto quando hai un ampio repertorio come il vostro. Come riuscite a farlo?

È un processo molto difficile perché devi pensare come quel brano influirà sullo spettacolo. Vi saranno sempre persone che si lamenteranno perché avrebbero voluto ascoltare un'altra canzone. Ma una volta che sai quale sarà l'effetto, diventa decisamente più facile.

Vi è una traccia che ti piacerebbe suonare dal vivo che secondo te non è stata suonata abbastanza?

Sì, vi sono diverse canzoni che avrei voluto suonare ma che non abbiamo mai usato. La verità è che vogliamo far passare una bella serata alla gente. Il pubblico viene ai concerti aspettandosi di sentire determinate canzoni e rimarrebbe deluso se non facessimo, che ne so, "Superheroes". Sentirebbe che qualcosa di molto importante manca dalla scaletta. Questa è la realtà dei fatti. Cerchiamo sempre di suonare quante più canzoni possibili e fintanto che il pubblico è ricettivo anche noi sul palco riusciamo a divertirci.

Dopo aver girato il mondo più e più volte, vi è ancora un luogo dove non siete stati e che vi piacerebbe poter raggiungere con un vostro concerto?

Certo, sulla Luna, probabilmente! (Ride, ndr.) Quello sarebbe molto interessante. Mi piacerebbe suonare dove hai un palco sulla spiaggia... delle palme... Questo tipo di cose che ti permettono di avere una vita comoda vicino al palco.

Purtroppo è già ora di salutarci...

Vorrei ringraziare tutti voi (fan, ndr.) per il vostro supporto. Sappiamo bene che non saremmo riusciti a fare quello che abbiamo fatto negli ultimi venticinque anni senza di voi!

Hi Jens and welcome back to SpazioRock! Last time we had a chat it was in the Wacken Open Air backstage, in 2011. If you were back in that backstage, which band would you prefer to play with on stage, the current Edguy or the band from 6 years ago? Why?

I like both versions, both have their right of existence. Obviously, we have grown up a little bit more. We were younger but I am not the kind of person that tries to turn back the time. Everything that happened has happened for a reason and led us where we are right now, actually I am quite happy. A few things must have been done right! Basically, we are still the same guys we were 6 years ago. Of course, everybody developed as a person, as a human being and we moved forward, everybody has a family and I think these are the biggest changes in everybody's life but not that much has changed with the band.

Going back to the present times, we are today to celebrate your 25th anniversary as a band.
May I ask you what were your personal expectations when you started playing with Edguy? Have they been fulfilled?

Well, when we started we didn't have any expectations at all. Seriously, we started the band when we were 14 years old and all we wanted was playing a couple of songs without so many mistakes as we did. So, if anybody would have told me what a huge band we would have become in 25 years I wouldn't believe him. I would not change any decision we made. Everything we did it's all worth, it's a gift being part of this band and being able to play in front of thousands of people all over the world and I am really thankful for this.

On the 14th of July you will celebrate this great achievement with the release of "Monuments". The artwork itself has many elements referring to your past. Who had this idea and how was it developed? Have you been involved with their selection?

The idea come from Toby (Sammet, Ed.) with the guy that usually makes our artworks. Then he tried to make it visual and it's all very interesting to see how a cover artwork develops from the first sketch where it is still hard to guess hot is will be at the end and it turned out to be a very cool artwork.

And what about the title? Are these tracks some sort of monuments to your career? It is quite a serious choice for the same band that wrote "Lavatory Love Machine"...

Yes! (laugh, Ed.) At least once in the lifetime we went for a serious title. A title that speaks for the music, for every album we released. No other word came to our minds but Monuments.

"Monuments" may be considered a sort of Greatest Hits, so why have you chosen to include 5 brand new tracks in it? It's almost half of a new album...

I know but that just happened by accident. Seriously, at the beginning, when we started talking about this compilation and we had this idea of doing one or two new songs but then we had those almost finished songs... I personally think five new songs are better than just two!

Is there one of these new track you really would like to introduce us to?

Of course, they are very cool, I think especially of "Wrestle With The Devil". That song to me sounds very fresh, I mean... in a way it's a song we didn't have before.

Now I am going to ask you something on behalf of your old school fans: why have you decided to release "Reborn In The Waste", from "Savage Poetry" recordings only now? Perhaps human kind wasn't ready for it in 1995?

Well, I think honestly this compilation was the only chance to release that song. We wouldn't release it as a regular B-side. There must have been a reason why this song didn't make it before (laugh, Ed.).

But I think we are all curious to know what this reason is!

It's a curiosity... I mean something for a real fan. Perhaps normal people won't ever listen to it. That song is part of our history and we didn't want to hide it. For the fans might be a curiosity but normal people may just skip it! (laugh, Ed.) All over the years, honestly, we had kind of forgot there was still an unreleased track from "Savage Poetry" session but of course while preparing the "Monuments" release we went through all our material we could present to the people and this song popped up. It may be a funny idea to have a sort of side B of the album (laugh, Ed.).

Also, there is not even one song from "Kingdom Of Madness". Aren't you proud enough of that release?

Yes, I am proud of it but we have many other better songs (laugh, Ed.). "Kingdom..." had really great ideas, great songs, like "Deadmaker" and "The Kingdom". It hasn't been a decision against that album but a decision for other songs which are much better.

Why don't you tell us something more regarding the tracklist selection?

Of course, with 10 studio albums, it is always hard to choose... you know you have limits, you can't put everything in it. There were songs that could have been on this compilation but we preferred to include songs which are not on regular albums. For instance, "Spooks In The Attic", which I love. Or "Judas In The Opera" with Michael Kiske. This is also a way to show who we were and who we are now.

Another interesting choice is to include the San Paolo live from 2004 in the DVD. What happened to all your other shows of the last 13 years?

I don't remember exactly but when we recorded the show, the plan was to release the DVD and I remember there was something wrong with it, something that didn't fit, so we made the decision to postpone it until we could release the material completely. Two-three songs were included in the "Superheroes" EP. It is a good show, it's fun to watch it, it has a good setlist. A very nice time document.

There is also a 160 pages book including some pictures from your past... what were your feelings while looking through them? I am sure there must be some very funny ones...

Well, it depends on the pictures we are talking about (laugh, Ed.). No, of course the whole process brought up some very good memories and some bad memories as well. You can see 25 years put together in 160 pages. You know, when you lay out a record, we are not just doing it for the fans, we do it very much for ourselves as well. That's why we spend so much time recording or choosing pictures. It is to make something beautiful to hold in our hands and be proud of what we have done. And, in a good conscience, something that we can sell to the people because it is really valuable and really worthy.

Do you have any of these pictures framed on your wall?

Definitely, some are. Actually, what I have framed on my wall are not pictures but backstage pass of some special shows and stuff like that.

Do you think Edguy has affected the live scene in Fulda since you started performing? If so, how?

I don't know. Well, many more people know about our town. Economically-wise it has a little side effect because many people are travelling to it, they book hotels and restaurant but don't really musically. I don't think we had a huge effect on our hometown.

Now a bizarre question: if you look on Wikipedia for famous people from Fulda, on the German version, only Tobias is mentioned whereas on the English version there is Dirk as well. What do you think about being the least important Edguy member from Fulda?

No, I think we are just less important, sometimes you have to face the truth! (laugh, Ed.) I think somebody should fix that! Honestly, I wouldn't know how to do that...

Let's talk about your live shows, how do you pick the covers you are going to play? Is this something you think fans are still expecting from you or is it something you do for fun?

It is something we do for fun, as I've mentioned many things in the first place we do them for ourselves, we play music we would like to hear ad we will enjoy playing.

Do you think this is the secret of your long lasting career as a band? There are not may line-ups that have lasted for more than 20 years.

Actually, I think it's just luck (laugh, Ed.). No, well, really there is no recipe for which you can stay together as a band. We are 5 characters in the band that have to stick together. Obviously if you have somebody in the band like Tobias Sammet, who is the prototype of the frontman and draws most of the attention, you need to have people in the band that are comfortable to stay in the background, otherwise there will be ego fights and this is why most of the bands split up, they can't keep their ego under control. We are a band that match together, we made possible to have the same line up for 20 years which is something I am very proud of and it is very rare in this kind of business.

It must be difficult to choose your own track as well with such a wide repertoire. How do you do that?

It is very difficult because you have to think how that song will affect the show. There will be always people complaining because they would have liked to hear another song. But once you have learnt the effect... it becomes easier.

Is there a song you really would like to play on stage which has not been played enough in your opinion?

Yes, there are many songs that I'd like to play but we never played. The thing is that we want to give to the people a good time. They are coming to the show expecting certain songs and they would be disappointed if we remove, for instance, "Superheroes". They would feel something very important is missing in the setlist. It is the way it is. We try to play as many songs as we can and as long as the reception of the people is good we are going to have a great time on stage.

You have already been touring all around the world but... is there a place where you really would like to perform and you haven't yet?

Yes, the Moon probably! (laugh, Ed.) That would be interesting! I'd like to perform where you have a beach by the stage.... palms... those kind of things that make your life by the stage comfortable.
