Gli In Flames sono tornati col nuovo album "Battles" a novembre. Ora che è passato un pò di tempo dalla sua pubblicazione, siete soddisfatti del lavoro fatto? Il responso ricevuto ha rispettato le tue aspettative?
Sono davvero molto contento, è così con ogni nostro album non appena lo diamo alla nostra etichetta discografica. Da qual momento in poi non si può più cambiare nulla quindi non ha alcun senso guardare indietro e desiderare di farlo diversamente. Ogni album degli In Flames è una fotografia di chi siamo ad un certo punto delle nostre vite. E se c'è qualcosa che ho bisogno di cambiare lo farò nel prossimo, altrimenti non lo avrei pubblicato. "Battles" è venuto fuori esattamente come desideravamo, devi essere soddisfatto al 100%. Sono stato in studio dal primo all'ultimo giorno ascoltando i mix tantissime volte. Per quanto riguarda le aspettative in realtà non ne ho perchè se mi ritengo soddisfatto per me è sufficiente.
Mixare questo disco è stato semplice o ne avete fatti diversi prima di trovare il definitivo?
E' stato ragionevolmente semplice perchè non registriamo solo un pò di parti strumentali e vocali che poi mixiamo. Costruiamo musica, per dire, in blocchi che partono da batteria, chitarre, basso e mettiamo su il materiale finché non sviluppiamo il totale in tutti i modi possibili. Il risultato finale non è una grossa sorpresa, si presume che tutti questi suoni devono lavorare armonicamente. Registrare un disco è un'evoluzione continua, e così è per noi. Sostanzialmente è un momento in cui devi sistemare le cose tipo "questa chitarra deve andare su, questa parte vocale ha bisogno di brillare un pochino qui, le tastiere andare giù" o qualsiasi cosa. E' più una cosa del genere, nessun grande accorgimento.
Il nuovo album è stato prodotto per la prima volta in California, pensi che un luogo possa influenzare il modo in cui si scrivono le canzoni o un disco suoni?
Penso di si, l'ambiente ha un ruolo fondamentale. Siamo esseri umani e non robot quindi se fuori c'è una bella giornata di sole tu sei felice e scrive in un certo modo, se fa freddo e piove lo fai in modo diverso. Ci siamo divertiti tantissimo a scrivere questo disco, abbiamo affittato una casa molto grande dove abbiamo costruito uno studio e dove passavamo del tempo a fare barbecue e bere buona birra mentre fuori c'era il sole...è stato perfetto!
Avete scritto le canzoni lì o nel corso degli ultimi due anni?
Non scriviamo nulla mentre siamo in tour. Ci siamo portati un pò di materiale dietro da casa, ma abbiamo scritto sostanzialmente tutto subito in California.
Per il nuovo disco vi siete affidati al produttore Howard Benson. Che ruolo ha avuto in studio? Il suo supporto è stato più tecnico o anche creativo?
Penso che un buon produttore debba avere una visione complessiva su tutto. Ha avuto entrambi i ruoli ma non ci ha mai detto cosa fare, diciamo che si è assicurato maggiormente di metterci a fare del nostro meglio. Ha voluto ascoltare le demo di tutte le canzoni chiedendoci cosa volevamo dire con la musica, cosa significassero per noi queste canzoni e cosa volessimo far arrivare ai nostri fan. Questo è il lavoro in cui è stato coinvolto, non ha mai detto come dovessimo suonare.
Il modo di fare e registrare musica è cambiato molto da quando avete iniziato. Cosa è mutato maggiormente e come la tecnologia ha influenzato la vostra musica?
Sentiamo di avere la stessa mentalità quando è il momento di scrivere e quale sia l'essenza degli In Flames. Bene, è la melodia, è sempre questa la chiave. Siamo ancora un'arma di metallo melodica e suona solo diversa dai primi tempi, ma è così che deve essere. Abbiamo fatto dodici dischi e non vogliamo che suonino tutti uguali. Siamo più grandi e persone differenti ora, nel corso della vita succedono delle cose che ti portano verso determinate direzioni. E questo si riflette nella musica. Non penso che gli In Flames sarebbero ancora in giro se avessimo replicato
"Lunar Strain" per dodici album. Come artista vuoi cambiare, essere creativo. La tecnologia è cambiata molto dagli inizi, registravano su nastro senza la possibilità di tornare indietro su queste macchine. Oggi puoi tenere tutto centinaia di volte per ottenere la perfezione. Puoi vedere la differenza tra una band e l'altra da come suonano dal vivo perchè tutti possono registrare un disco. Questo è ciò che conta maggiormente.
Parte dei vostri fan vorrebbero che voi tornaste alle radici con un disco simile ai primi.
Perchè dovremmo registrare qualcosa che abbiamo già fatto? A me sta bene se ti piace una sola canzone, un album o tutto quanto. Sono felice se le persone ascoltano la nostra musica e vengono ai nostri concerti. Io amo i primi dischi degli In Flames ma non c'è nessun motivo per fare musica che già abbiamo fatto in passato, non siamo le stesse persone. Non possiamo fare nuovamente album così e credo che se lo facessimo i risultati sarebbero disastrosi.
La vostra lunga carriera dimostra come siete stati capaci di rimanere sempre attuali, i vostri dischi suonano sempre differenti ma contemporanei. Qual è l'aspetto più importante per rimanere al top?
Amare quello che fai. Questo è un sogno, riesco a suonare la mia musica, la mia interpretazione di heavy metal, il modo in cui penso debba essere e posso viaggiare il mondo incontrando i fan di ogni continente. Possiamo connetterci anche se non ci conosciamo personalmente. E' meraviglioso!
Pensi che dipenda dalla vostra abilità nel cambiare suono in studio o piuttosto nel modo di scrivere le canzoni?
Non ci siamo mai riuniti per dire "ok, adesso cambiamo" per essere attuali, scriviamo semplicemente quello che sentiamo giusto per noi e tutto il resto di quello che succede, se il tour non è attuale o sei fuori dai trend, non importa così tanto. Dipende tutto dalle tue convinzioni. Se dovessimo ascoltare tutti quelli che ci dicono cosa fare, che sia la scienza, i media o le etichette discografiche, non penso saremmo ancora qui.
La vostra formazione è cambiata un pò, recentemente Daniel e Peter hanno lasciato la band. Al di là di quello che abbiamo letto sui giornali, cosa è successo o cosa sta succedendo all'interno della band?
Sono stati entrambi parte della band per molto tempo, volevano fare altro e non puoi farci niente. Hanno dedicato vent'anni della loro vita alla band, sono successe molte cose nella vita personale. Tutti e due hanno famiglia e vogliono stare a casa a fare cose differenti, non sta succedendo nulla nella band. Se vuoi essere parte di una band come la nostra o qualsiasi altra di livello alto devi dedicarci la tua vita al 100%.
Il premio Nobel assegnato a Bob Dylan ha in qualche modo certificato l'importanza anche dei testi delle canzoni. A partire da oggi pensi che possiamo aspettarci altri autori premiati?
Il fatto che un musicista possa vincere un Nobel per i suoi testi ha fatto discutere la comunità letteraria. Tuttavia penso sia bello che qualcuno riesca a vedere la bellezza anche nelle cose piccole, non deve essere necessariamente un libro, può essere solo una persona che scrive canzoni dopo canzoni cercando di descrivere una situazione, un mondo, un relazione o qualsiasi cosa essa sia. Non so se qualcuno del genere meriti o no questo premio, ma è bello che si guardi ad un quadro più ampio.
Vi vedremo a marzo in Italia per un tour speciale nei teatri. Puoi anticiparci qualcosa?
Sarà un set diverso, con alcune canzoni che avete ascoltato di recente ed altre che non si sentivano da un pò. Andremo molto indietro nel nostro catalogo e avremo anche un quartetto d'archi al nostro fianco. E' un tour che andrà nei posti più piccoli dove non suoniamo abitualmente e dove proporremo un mix tra ciò che facciamo di solito e altro. Sarà una bella serata senza alcun dubbio, se siete fan degli In Flames non dovete perdervela perchè non penso ce ne saranno altre così in futuro.
Avete mai pensato all'idea di fare un Big 4 con le più importanti band scandinave? In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates e Soilwork insieme sullo stesso palco...
(Ride NdR) Sì, ne abbiamo parlato qualche volta scherzando ma non è detto che non possa accadere. In passato abbiamo fatto alcuni tour con gli Arch Enemy, i Dark Tranquillity o i Soilwork... Non direi di aspettarvelo, è una possibilità... ok fammi cambiare frase, non mi dispiacerebbe farlo perchè sono tutti ottimi amici e mi piacciono le loro band. Perciò chi lo sa, non è una cattiva idea...

In Flames has returned with the new record "Battles" last november. Now that some time has passed since its release, are you satisfied with what you have done and did the response meet your expectations?
I'm very happy, it's the same with every single album as soon as I give it away to the record company. I can't change anything from that time so there is no point in looking back and wishing you did it differently. Every In Flames album is a photograph of who we are at that point in our lives, you know. And if there is something I need to change I will do it on our next not the previous, otherwise I wouldn't have released it. "Battles" sounds exactly like we wanted it to be, you should be 100% satisfied with it. I've been in the studio from the first to last day listening to the mix over again and again. And when it comes to expectations, I don't really have because if I'm really satisfied with my music that's 100% for me.
Mixing the album has been a simple process? How many mix have been made before the definitive?
I think it was fairly simple process because we don't just record a bunch of instrumental or vocal parts and then mixing. We build music, we can say, in blocks that starts with drums, guitars, bass and put the stuff on top on top on top until develop total mix all the way through. It's not like a big surprise at the end, you're supposed to put all these sounds so they work in harmony. It's a constant evolution recording an album, so it is for us. Fairly it's a process where you have to fix things like ‘this guitar needs to go up, this vocal part need to shine a little bit here, keyboards to go down or whatever. It's more stuff like that, no any big fix.
The new album has been produced in California for the first time, do you think that a place can affect the way you write songs or a record sounds?
I think the environment plays a big role. I mean, we're humans and not robots so if there is a good sunny day outside you feel happy and write in a certain way, if it's cold and rainy you write in a different way. So I definitely think yes. We had a super good time writing this album, we rented a big house, built a small studio and we were barbeque and drinking good beer and it was sunny outside...it was perfect!
Did you write the songs in California or in the past two years?
We don't write anything in between. Had some material from back home but we wrote this pretty much right there and then in California.
For "Battles" you teamed up with the producer Howard Benson. Which was his role in the studio? His support has been only technical or creative in some way?
I think a good producer should have an overall view on everything. He had both role here but didn't tell us what to do, it was more like trying to make sure that we were doing the best we possibly could when he was trying to record. He wanted to hear demo of all the songs telling us what we wanna say or feel with the music, what that song means to you as an artist and what you want the fan to get from these songs. So that's all the stuff he was involved in, never said you should sound like this or do this.
Making and recording music process has changed a lot since you started. What has changed more and how did technology influence your music?
We feel to have the same mentality when it comes to write music and what is the essence of In Flames. Well that's the melody, it is always the key. We are still a melodic metal gun and it just sounds different from the early days, but it's the way it should be. You know, we have twelve albums and don't want they sound the same. We're older, we're different people, things happen in life spinning you in a certain directions. That should reflect in music, I don't think In Flames would be around if we did Lunar Strain for twelve albums. As an artist you wanna move, be creative. Well technology changed much from our early days. We recorded on tape without any recoil on the box like this consoles. Today you can collect everything hundred times like into perfection basically, I would say you can see which band difference from each other playing live because everyone could record an album. That's what really counts.
Part of your fanbase would like you to put out a record similar to the first albums.
Why should we re-record something we think is already perfect? I mean, it's fine with me if you like one song , just one album or everything. I'm happy if people listen to our music or come to our shows. I love our first records so there is no reason to make music we have already done and we are not the same people. We can't do these albums again and it would be a disaster achievement tried.
Your long career proves how you have been able to keep the band current with the trends, your albums always sound different but contemporary. What is the most important aspect to stay on top?
To love what you do. This is a dream, and I get to play my music, my interpretation of heavy metal, the way I think it should be and I'm able to travel the world and meet fans in all the continents. We can connect even though I don't know you personally. It's fantastic.
Do you think it depends on your ability to change sound in studio or rather a different way of writing songs?
We never had a meeting where we said "let's change" to stay current, we just write what it feels right for us and whatever else is going on, if you current tour is not current at all, you are outside of the trend that doesn't really matter. It's all about your own believes. If we would listen to everyone that told us what to do, science or media or record companies or whoever I don't think we would be here.
The line up of In Flames has changed a lot, lately also Daniel and Peter left the band. Beyond what we read through magazines, what happened or what is going on within the band?
Well they were both part of the band for a long time, they want to do something else and that's nothing you can argue with. They devoted 20 years of their lives to the band, a lot of things happened as persons. They both have family and wanna stay at home doing different things in life, it's nothing going on with the band. it's more like if you wanna be part of this a band like ours or any band on high level you have to devote your life 100% on it.
The Nobel prize assigned to Bob Dylan has somehow certified the importance of lyrics also in music. So starting from today should we expect any other songwriter to be awarded?
I think this whole thing stirred things up pretty much in literature community that recording artist can win a Nobel prize because of his lyrics. At the same time I think it's pretty cool that someone can see the beauty in the small pieces, it doesn't have to be a book, exalt some pages, it can still someone who writes songs after songs and try to describe a situation, a world, a relationship or whatever it might be. I don't know if someone like that is worth or not of this prize but it's cool that we look into the wider picture.
We will see you performing in Italy in March for a very special tour in theaters. Can you anticipate something about it?
It's gonna be a different set, I mean some songs that you heard recently but a lot of stuff that you haven't heard in a while. We're gonna go back very far in the catalogue and we'll have a string quartet coming with us. This tour is meant to be in smaller venues where we don't normally play and it's gonna be a mix between what we usually do and something else. It would be a good night for sure, if you are a fan of In Flames you shouldn't miss it cause I don't think we will do this again any time soon.
Have you ever thought of the idea of making a Big 4 with the most important Scandinavian bands? In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates and Soilwork on the same stage together...
(Laughs NdR) Yeah we have talked about those things sometimes, we just joked around with it but it might happen. I mean in the past we have done tours with Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork... I wouldn't say to expect it at all, it's a possibility... ok let me change, I wouldn't mind doing it because they are all good friends of us and I like their individual bands and the people behind them. So who knows, it's not a bad idea...
