Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su SpazioRock.it! Innanzitutto come state ultimamente?

Cenk: Ciao!

Nell’album compaiono molti ospiti speciali, come Pat Mastelotto, Ray Coburn, Reb Beach e altri.

“Never Again”, “100 Thousand Years”, “Crash & Burn”, “Time”: tutto magico!

– ENGLISH VERSION –

Hi guys! Welcome to SpazioRock.it! First of all, how are you doing lately?

Cenk: Hey, I am writing this to you from my holiday house in Mediterranean 2 days left and I’ll be back home. So its great , rested well and cant wait to start working!

John: Doing great! Our album is out – and it’s getting great reviews! It’s a solid album – and we are hoping it reaches many out in the various parts of the world!

You are both definitely not new to the hard/melodic rock scene, but your collaboration on the project Crossing Rubicon haven’t started long ago. Can you briefly tell us how did you gather up together and then decided to start making songs together?

Cenk: I got in touch with Serafino & Mario with the hope of finding the right singer for the songs I wrote in many years. There were many names in the list, some were really big names. I was more into less known names with the right motivation and hunger. Mario came up with John Bisaha and sent me a couple of tunes of his previous works. On our first Facetime call with John, I knew he was the singer of Crossing Rubicon. His tone, his style, talent, friendship and his passion made this album possible.

John: I was contacted by Mario de Riso from Frontiers Records, who told me about this killer songwriter/producer out of Turkey who they wished to become one of their writing team. He presented me with several demos of Cenk’s, which I loved. It didn’t take long for us to get acquainted, strike up a relationship and begin to work on ‘Perfect Storm’.

The moniker “Crossing Rubicon” is pretty incisive, historically speaking. Can we describe your music like that, too?

Cenk: We called our band Crossing Rubicon because without the right voice it just didn’t feel right to do that album. Felt like I was on the edge of that river for many years alone with all the songs in my vault. I needed someone with stars in his eyes , a powerhouse vocal. When I first heard John I knew he was the one, the wait was over. So that’s when those songs “crossed the rubicon”. This album is just the beginning , I have 5-6 more albums in me.

John: Absolutely! We are very much in your face with this album! To me – it’s no holds barred, we put all we had into this album!

Let’s talk now about your biggest news: you’ve just released your debut album, called “Perfect Storm”, so big kudos to you! Are you satisfied with the reaction of the fans?

Cenk: Yes , since I am a fan of this music too, my goal as a producer was to create a classic , old school AOR album. Just like the ones we all enjoyed in the mid & late 80’s. I wanted a clean , crisp sound with real melodies, songs with soul . I didn’t try to invent the wheel again, and I feel really happy with the amazing feedback from our fans and critics. Almost all reviews we got so far are brilliant. This is real classic AOR and it’s back!

John: The fan reaction has been great! All has been well received – with many killer reviews! We can’t thank those who have purchased, listened enough!

Could you talk about the composition process? How did everything proceed?

Cenk: I chose 9 songs from my vault with John (out of hundreds of songs) and added 2 new compositions. One called “Scar” which is written by me during the album process and Efe Eroglu my elder son composed “100 Thousand Years”. I sent backing tracks to John in ProTools session format. With pilot melodies , some songs were already ready for him to sing , like “ Perfect Storm” “Scar” “Crash & Burn”. The others had the melody and song names etc but needed better lyrics. Those were all re-written or written by John Bisaha. He also added great melodic hooks.

John: All or most of these tunes have come from Cenk’s archives – dating back to the 1980’s. That’s what makes this a Classic/AOR/Melodic style of music. Nothing has been ‘fabricated’ to make it so – it’s all very organic. Only a few of the tunes had all or most of the lyrics written, so I had a GRAND time adding my touch to the songs that needed lyrics. The tunes I was able to write on – Cenk actually had working titles and melodies, and I went from there!

Many special guests appear on the album, like Pat Mastelotto, Ray Coburn, Reb Beach among others. What was it like working with them?

Cenk: Pat Mastelotto is a mentor and a great friend , we met in the 90’s and we did a lot of work together for many projects. He was so kind as always and played on my song Crash & Burn, Ray Coburn , I was and I’m still a big fan of his music. I always thought he was the soul of the Canadian Band Honeymoon Suite we also met around the late 90’s and he used his magical touch on Crash & Burn and Get Away. Reb Beach , I was willing to have him as a guest too since he is my band pal from Winger and also my hero.. unfortunatly we couldn’t do it because of our schedules.. he is not in the album but in my heart!

The new album is the “perfect storm” of powerful hard rock rides and classic melodic ballads. Would you pick a pair of tracks that you consider the most representative and explain why?

Cenk: I think one of them is “Too Late” it’s a real classic Aor with soul and It is a very sincere song. I remember writing it in the studio around early 90’s I recorded it to a tape just before my client arrived , played all the major parts In 10 mins.. with my old Sampler and Roland JD.800, that cassette tape was lost until 2020. I found it and sent it with my scat melody & the name Too Late to John. He took it to the stars with his lyrics and performance (he also changed some melodies and made it perfect). The other one is “Scar”: It’s a very personal song to me. Normally most of the lyrics on this album are written by John. But this one.. I wrote the lyrics as well. Also this song is the youngest song on the album other than 100 Thousand Years. It shows my current state of heart and more mature than others in many ways.

John: It’s very hard for me to choose only two. You know when you’re creating – and you get that ‘chill’? I got that chill on several songs through every process of the song creation and finalization. And still today – every time I hear it. ‘Scar’ holds a very special place for me – for a myriad of reasons. I knew ‘Too Late’ was magic the moment I heard the music. ‘Never Again’, ‘100 Thousand Years’, ‘Crash & Burn’, ‘Time’ – all magical! I can keep going if you’ll allow…

Cenk, you come from Turkey, a country which has a peculiar musical tradition. What do you think you bring with you about your culture and put in your musical creations?

Cenk: Not for Crossing Rubicon or for this album.. I did all those in my Xcarnation – Grounded album back in 2005 which was a very heavy Industrial rock album with ethnic touch…and also for Kip Winger’s From The Moon To The Sun album which I produced many tracks for him. This album Perfect Storm is pure west coast Melodic Rock .

John, I read that, when you were in your teens, you used to lock up in your room just trying to listen and study and reproduce as many different kind of vocal styles as possible. What would you suggest to a nowadays teenager that would like to pursue a music career, which is often not so easy?

John: I did! Every day you would hear Smokey, 4 Tops, EWF, The Spinners, Frankie Valli, MJ, Jackson Brown, ELO, Chicago, Elton, Zep, Bee Gees and a TON of others – coming out of my room. I sang them all. I wanted to have my voice blend into what they were singing as close to theirs as I could get. That trained me to have a wide range of styles, which makes me able to blend in to any genre I may be singing. As far as what I tell the young ones – if music is your passion – practice, practice, PRACTICE as often as you can and immerse yourself into what makes you YOU in that space. You need to have a foundation that is solid – and grow from there. I’ll tell you this – Cenk is one of THE best musicians I have ever encountered. I’m sure he will tell you he absorbed all he could from wherever he could – whenever he could – to make himself into what he is today. And that’s one BADASS Dude!

Are you planning to do some shows in order to promote the album?

Cenk: Yes, we are really looking forward to do it. We started as a duo with John but in the process of making the album , my sons brought a great quality and energy to our music and they earned their places in this team. Now we are a real band! With my elder son Efe Eroglu (2nd Lead Gtrs & Keyz) and younger Reis Ali Eroglu (Who is a killer musician ) on drums. We can now play it even better than the album on stage!

John: That would be an awesome thing! Hoping for something in ’23!

We’re getting to the end of the interview.Would you like to leave a message to your fans?

Cenk: After all we are fans of this music too! and I am sure who hears this album will feel it too! The Real AOR is Back! Thank You !

John: Appreciate you taking the time to read this interview – AND – listening to our music! Pass the word around please! Love to All!
